In his newly released memoir "The Storyteller," the 16-time Grammy winner relates his story of growing up in Washington, D.C., touring as a teenager, and his friendship with the late Kurt Cobain. Grohl speaks with Hari Sreenivasan about grief -- and finding rhythm in unusual places.

Love Dave, not a fan of the Foo Fighters. I tried, but it wasn't for me. My Jamaican Granny taught me a long time ago (the 70s) that everything is not for everybody. Still, I was a Nirvana fan, and I still send prayers to Dave and Krist for the loss of their brother Kurt.

I stopped and went back to re hear it.. it's that good. If you've ever met him, you know he's the real deal. Grabbed a barbeque, some utensils, a sh*t-ton of beef and pulled to a firefighter base camp during our wildfires two years ago and just started making burger and cooking steaks... unannounced. 🤘🎸🤘

@@matthewchunk3689 no one knows exactly what was in his system - all that was said was 10 substances... We don't know if they were prescribed by a Dr. Also, having worked in a Drs office, I know different things as simple as aspirin can cause false positives for other things. The man was a phenomenal drummer; a very physically demanding job - I'm sure his body - all elements were sore and he hurt. I do understand your thoughts though. ✌🏼

A lot of greats did not mesh with school, it's not for everyone.
Ironically, when becoming a teacher and adopting into an education system you realise that the problem isn't with the children, but with the system itself not accommodating the many aspects of human behaviour. So in order to be a great teacher you must forget the system and focus on the children. In many ways it's tragic that we're so far behind in our educational systems considering the vast knowledge we have on behavioral and developmental phycology.
Most children aren’t. Best way to learn is experience, they just don’t know what to do with us but stick us in a classroom

This is going to take a while to process…..I see a second volume of his book ………Storyteller Part 2….I’m sure he will make music again, but whether the Foo Fighters will ever play together again is debatable.
I can't get enough of Dave's optimism and energy. Whenever I see an interview with him, I feel hopeful, excited and happy. I hope to convey the same kind of emotions to people around me. Thanks.
It's so wonderful that his mother, "got it" with him, instead of trying to fix him and insisting he finish school and go to college. Children learn in different modalities. As a retired teacher myself, I know that we need to teach children in all the different modalities, so we can find and teach to their strengths. This really needs to start in preschool and elementary. He was a lucky kid to have her as his mother. Thank God he didn't get lost in drugs.
Well said! Have met a handful of retired middle school teachers late in life & doubt any would hold your perspective. Instead, it seems like they stayed in middle school too long & interact with peers as if they were still the ‘authority’.
So true, I'm like Dave & it took a long time to figure out that ART & the right brained world suited me better than my parent's ideas (more about WWII fears & Great Depression insecurity than reality) I'm glad he made the best of the "children are to be seen & not heard" era with a compassionate mom. So many (like Kurt & my brother) didn't make it out alive....the angst consumed them.

This is a wonderful message. I hope he doesn't give up too. I'm so broken hearted to know Taylor is no longer with the world and we cannot see him play drums again like the god he was. I do feel their last few albums had lost their magic and didn't sound like them, and I wonder if the loss of Taylor will make him write some incredible songs ... sadly most great songs come from pain.

@@matthewchunk3689 trust me, these things can be complicated-- you can't get somebody clean if they don't want to be, and obviously Taylor was a functioning addict, as many people are today (pills)-- I can step outside my door, blindfold myself, spin around and throw a rock and I'll hit a house where someone pops pills, that's how common it is.
And then he was supposedly Dave's best friend, they were really close, so Dave probably couldn't just fire the dude.
Then again all we can do is speculate, maybe he didn't know dude was eating pills-- maybe Dave secretly eats pills himself?

He is the best, truly. How many rock stars checked in with their fans, personally, and not through a publicist, during the pandemic? I have saved two DMs from the man himself. No joke, not a scam, it was him inquiring about my family’s wellbeing and thanking me for following his career for decades and enjoying his music. He’s the real deal, the Elvis of my generation!
He’s an amazing guy ! It’s so easy to love him. He will always be one of my GOATS. Love Dave on a level I can’t relate to most musicians I grew up with.

Dave Grohl has to be one of the most genuine people in music. No facade, no attitude, just a man with a story who happens to be famous. I adore his stories and his love of Kurt. He has never tried to capitalize on Kurts death nor has Krist. They have always had my respect. Such an AMAZING musician but an even more AMAZING human. Dave, you were so loved in the 90's as a drummer but continued on to be loved as a songwriter, guitarist and creator.

Yes, I totally agree with everything you say. I’ve seen Foo Fighters twice now and what amazes me, that you rarely see in other bands, is that Dave and his band mates perform because they love to and that shows in the smiles on their faces! So much expression! Listening to The Storyteller now and it’s an absolutely awesome book! I highly recommend it!
It's funny to hear Dave Grohl talk about being star struck. I got to meet him briefly when I was 13 and I was in such awe standing in front of a guy that I basically idolized that there is absolutely no way he didn't see it written on my face. He was super cool about it, asked if I was having fun, and went on his merry way. A humble and good dude.
I just listened to Dave narrating his book. Excellent read. His goodness, gratitude, and class shines through. Amazing human being.
With the 1000 employees he hires everyday.
Gotta admit, I'm not a Fooies devotee, but I'm completely enthralled by Dave, he's utterly charming, especially when he's being a massive music geek.

He always shoots down his singing ability saying he’s just screaming, but there’s tons of soft melodies he sings to and he’s got a great voice

The first time me hearing his singing was "Walking After You". This song (thankfully) has no screaming involved and boy, was I floored by the tenderness and romantic mood Dave had in that piece. I remember hearing it on the radio and writing down the lines I heard on paper, so that I could try to find it online somewhere (it was before Shazam)

I mean, February Stars, is so filled with emotions. His voice and the guitar carry that song.
I would not say his voice is "great" but... it is sincere, well rehearsed, and strong enough to keep going (even after touring and "screaming for 3 hours").
I think Dave's ability to channel emotions through his voice is the gift, not any technique or natural uniqueness. It is his Heart that comes through, and I think that's where his humility and vulnerability causes him to bat away compliments.
As a drummer myself, "I feel like I'm dancing when I'm drumming" was a great description.

I agree with this. Even I remember a jazz drummer who I got lessons from, advised me to get dancing lessons to improve the awareness of my body and how that would improve my drumming skills.
Freddy Gruber suggested to Neil Peart that he wear dancing shoes when playing.

its the only way i can play drums....
I feel encouraged after watching this, that Dave will be back. Obviously he has alot of heavy grieving to do. But, music keeps this guy alive. Whether or not it is with the Foos, we'll have to wait and see.

He’s obviously not only extremely talented, but very grounded. Despite such human tragedy he prevails and continues to be grateful.
You can see how much pain he is still going through with Kurt's passing. Can't imagine what Dave must be going through right now. May Taylor rest in peace knowing how much joy, inspiration and love he brought to the world.

This guy was a great interviewer, his questions seemed like an actual flow to the conversation as opposed to some interviewers who just try and get down their bullet point list of questions.

As someone who was on the other side of the equation I'm sorry for the pain you and your daughter were caused. I nearly caused that hurt to my family but I'm really thankful the Old Man in the fancy hat decided I wasn't done here.
I can't take away your pain or any one elses, I wish I could but I genuinely understand your pain and hope you're doing okay.
If it's any consolation it turned out for me that although he was a bit of an asshole, there was a good reason for it and when you see it, you never see anything else again. You know true from that point onwards and utterly at peace. There is no hell, no heaven, once you experience it you'll know there's really no need for them either. It's always in us, it just takes death for most of us to see.
I really believe your daughter, if she's gotten over his really annoying fascination with fancy beards and hats yet, is being prepared for the next round but is at peace no matter where her seed currently is.

The nice thing is the interviewer seems genuinely enthralled listening to Dave.
As much as I love music I usually skip rock star interviews when I see them in my recommended videos, but I saw this one was PBS so I clicked anyway. Wasn't disappointed. He didn't as a bunch of BS questions. He asked some questions and got out of the way like a pro.

I was the drummer in a band called "The Lovehandles" in the late eighties. We went down to play the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville and were booked with an opener from D.C., "The Scream". We had a great time with those guys. Dave was just another long haired partier like me. He played my drums and we danced to each other's music. And we drank a lot of beer. I don't think I got paid for the gig but priceless memories from when the music business existed and before punk (grunge) became pop. Thanks for the memories, Dave!
Scream opened for YOU? The "Lovehandles"? A band I never heard of in the 1980's and a 1980's band I can find no record of online??? Meanwhile Scream had been an international touring act since 1981 with classic releases on one of the most well known American indie labels, Dischord. But THEY opened for your band? Riiiiiight. I'm guessing the Lovehandles - with a name like that - were a party/cover band? Scream - like a lot of the DC bands had strong musical ethics and in a million years I can't see them accepting an opening slot for a university/frat/party act 7 or 8 years into their career. That was SO NOT their scene. I can accept that YOUR band was the opener and not the other way around. But I'll have to ask Pete or Franz Stahl from Scream when I get a chance. Pete and Franz changed the band's name essentially to Wool and got a major label deal, Dave joined what became the biggest band in the World. What did the famous Lovehandles get up to in the early 90's?
@@misterslats Well, I don't know why I'd lie about it. Yes, it was a small gig and we were booked to travel to Fayetteville to be the headliner. We didn't know who the opener was going to be. And I'm sure you never heard of the Luvhandles because we never got a record deal or became "big". You might be surprised at all the stories of the scene back then. It was completely different and so much fun!

When you are a true musician you can't separate the music from your soul. You will play music in a dump or in a palace, it will always be the music..first. Everything else is secondary. Thanks Dave for being a true musician.
30 years ago and the 15 year old misfit in me that hated everyone and everything is forever grateful for Nirvana. These guys got me when no one else did and made me feel less alone.
Me too. We were so angry back then. The music matched the times. Still miss the 90s. Best time of my life! Eventhough we were angry, maybe that expression helped us live our best lives. System of the down was my angry expression band... total mash pit and then a break. Love it.

Dave Grohl is a pretty deep guy. I love to listen to his stories and analogy for some pretty wild experiences. He’s also very down to earth which makes him so incredibly relatable to so many people. He’s super cool in my opinion.

As a lyricist myself, I think the biggest thing for being a good songwriter is being a good storyteller. And Kurt knew how to tell stories. The way he blended lyrics, rhythms, tones, and pitch was just masterful.
Dave Grohl is such a talented man. Yet he's so humble. I have lost count of the times I've seen Foo Fighters live, he's really compassionate and generous with his fans. Especially youngsters or fans with disabilities. He appreciates each member of the band too. They're more appreciative of each other than most families are. God Bless the Foo Fighters family, my thoughts and prayers are with them all and their loved ones with the recent tragic loss of Taylor Hawkins x
His mom substituted at the high school where I taught. When the kids knew she would be at the school, they’d ask her to get her son to sign their cassette tapes. She did. ❤️
By the way, his mother was right. Sitting in a classroom is not a healthy way for some kids to learn. It’s expedient, but not organic. I’d say 30% of students benefit from traditional classroom learning.

From a journalism background I'll say one of the best interviews I've ever seen!! I was in SEA during the grunge era and the beginning and end were sad. SO glad David has lived loving music and not gone down the horrible road that many have including my favorites Laynne Staley and Chris Cornell. God bless from Colorado.
I’m a year and a half older than Dave, but I can honestly say he is the top living musician of my generation. What he has accomplished and continues to do is absolutely awesome.
Grohl is probably successful and has a positive attitude, despite the tragedy of Nirvana, because he had such a supportive family. Other musicians from his era didn't have a mom like Dave's perhaps, and didn't have healthy coping mechanisms. I think about all the bands I liked in high school, and they're all dead from drugs/suicide: Blind Melon, Joy Division, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Jeff Buckley, Elliot Smith and there are probably many more. We need more happy families and good parents in this world, and in arts in particular.
Why are you including Soundgarden in this concept? Chris passed as a Grown Man in his early 50s. He was extremely gifted, respected and successful. Yes, he struggled with depression and self medicated at times but excess and stupidity or an accident is not what killed him. He just felt things too intensely. The same goes for Kurt. I'm sorry but, you are way off base IMO. BTW, How old are you? I grew up between Seattle and Hoquiam, which is where Kurt and Christ are from. I just feel very strongly about the Seattle Music Scene because I lived it. I was there.
Nel Hoon was a great mother and supported Shannon Hoon through all his endeavors. He grew up loved and in a positive household. I don't think that is what makes people make it and still be humble. I think it is the experiences that people go through and the direction their moral compass takes them, that truly makes a person.

Paul McCartney fans might have something to say about that, granted "Wings" only had a couple of songs I would listen to, but should that matter? ACDC went on without Bon Scott, very successfully. Plus, Queens of the stone age had some good tunes. You may not like his music, and that's no big deal, but surely you must give some respect for a band who's been performing for 20+ years now? Same. Kurt died on this day. I have been building up watching all the footage and interviews for days for at least a week now and I remembered way in the back that this was the day Kurt died but I didn’t realize it until today 100% until I realized this was the day Kurt died and so my prehistoric brain or whatever they call it knew this day was coming up about a week ago and I started watching footage and interviews and everything and a lot of Foo Fighters stuff and a lot of Nirvana stuff my instinct told me to watch and today thank heaven I had the day off I have been binge watching all of this I mean as we should… it’s a memorial
He seems like an everyday person living a different life. He’s got certain skills like all over us .
So Happy this man is helping our younger generation appreciate Rock N Roll along with being a humble human being. What a Man!
Dave talking about his interesting experiences in music and struggle in school, immediately I thought the guy *must* be neurodiverse. Googled it and he came out in 2020 in one of his documentaries about how ADHD most likely influenced his early exit from school. So glad he's come forward about this stuff and still floored that he can't read music... same with when I found out Paul McCartney is similar. It's amazing finding out more and more famous people fall in the neurodiverse category and it gives me hope, being autistic myself.

My mottos in life are, ‘dare to be different’, step out of your comfort zone and ‘don’t just think outside of the box, throw the box away’.
There are a considerably large number of famous (and unknown talented) musicians who cannot read music. Thank goodness that did not stop them from creating the many musical masterpieces we know and love.
Music notation is just a way for one person to communicate to another how a song goes. It's not the only way to understand music and it definitely wasn't the first way, for sure. It's like, you don't need the periodical table of elements to cook dinner. Obviously Dave and Paul understand a LOT about music.

@@helenmccool7547 I love Foo Fighters almost as much as Nirvana, but I kind of feel that while yeah Dave's skill is above '95 Kurt's. Had they remained, Kurt would have also grown that experience. Grown his skills. And, who knows maybe his singing style would have written him off while Dave still relevant lol. *Sigh, wish I could see that alternate universe though.
I'm still affected by Kurt's departure. Was like a close family member died. I remember going through all the denial, anger, sadness feeling in the few days after.

I saw the headline on the front page of the newspaper in a newspaper box and bought the paper in sadness. (Pre-internet ways. 😉) His music and persona has definitely and rightfully stood the test of time...if he only knew.

Dude, you are on point! I can relate to the level of grieving where you can’t even listen to music because it takes you back to certain points in your life. My brother’s favorite band was Nirvana and when he passed it took me like a year to even want to listen again. But even when we’re running away, our feet somehow keep time… and now listening brings me some degree of joy with the pain. Thanks for all of the memories.

Destroyed me cause even though I liked the party hearty glam bands music it was about fun etc…I really didn’t fit in with that and nirvana I definitely fit in with-as I suspect many other misfit kids did too- so when we heard he died , it was like the bully in gym class won…it really messed me up for along time…I hardly listen to any of the big 4 from Seattle anymore because, it is,complaint rock and it is negative…I Remember Vince Neil saying when grunge hit big…we all have bad days why sing and complain about it,,sing about joyful things like getting laid , partying with friends etc something to that effect and he was right..grunge was cool when it came out and us gen x were pissed off, about the world etc..but that shit got old fast….R.I.P. Kurt,hope your happy elsewhere.

I grew up listening to Nirvana and The Foo Fighters. Its almost a part of my DNA at this point. Growing up in the SFV (where Dave lives) you see a lot of Dave around which is pretty cool since he's such an amazing superstar. It's so cool to see how he remains humble and one of the nicest people on this planet. I can't even imagine what he is going through right now. I hope he is ok.

As someone who has spatial sequence synesthesia, Dave definitely has it based on his description of how he “sees” music. Very similar to how I “see” dates and the passage of time. Incidentally, this type of synesthesia has been shown to exist in conjunction with a weirdly vivid memory, which I also have, so when he talked about being able to remember things so well, those things are actually tied together. The brain is pretty freaking fascinating, And Dave Grohl is awesome.
Yep. One cannot "learn" to write songs like Lennon/McCartney. A person can improve on certain skills if they possess the basic talent but without the intrinsic ability I don't think you can. Dave is one of those with innate talent as well as a complete lack of hubris which makes him an awesome dude in my book!

Even the most common type of synesthesia where letters and numbers register as having innate colors benefits memory. It helps me remember birthdays, hotel room numbers, names, spelling, etc because I often remember the color pattern associated with them.

Great interview! It's always fascinating to me when I watch things like this to see the person behind the persona. I mean, this guy is a madman on the stage and pours out his entire being, blood, sweat, energy and emotion during a performance. He gives his fans way more that they paid for. Then, to see a video like this where all the powerful energy is stripped away and the more introspective part of him is opened up, it just seems like a rare privilege that he would share himself so honestly with the world who loves him so much.
My heart breaks having this video come across my feed today, and knowing that the pain of losing a band brother has been revisited on Dave. Nobody deserves to have to go through that loss. Twice.

Dave Grohl is musical and definitely has synaesthesia, but hasn't totally changed our understanding of music. Jacob Collier, on the other hand, is a musical genius living in our time. (And also has synaesthesia). It's not about personal preference, it's about redefining our understanding of the field. Like Einstein, and Issac Newton.
What a real and authentic human being Dave Grohl is. His spirit takes me right back to being a 15 yr old around 1994 -1995. You can tell that time in his life, the early 90's was formative, as it was for so many of us. The last generation of humans to grow up without the world wide web. I really appreciate Dave Grohl, his humility and honesty is always refreshing. Great interview.

We were so lucky to have the music we did in those pre-teen / teen years. I can tell you exactly where I was the first time I heard the Nevermind album. As a teen who was struggling with home life, Kurt's death shook me to my very core. It did for a lot of us. There is something to be said about a 30 year old song that gets you blood moving the same way it did when you first heard it.
