2017 Toyota Hilux SR5 review | CarAdvice

  • We know the 2016 Toyota HiLux SR5 isn’t the best dual cab in the class, because we’ve tested it against the competition not long after its initial release.
    We know the styling of the all-new model polarises people - even strident Toyota fans most of whom reckon the front end especially has been beaten with the ugly stick.
    We also know that the unladen ride leaves a lot to be desired - and keeps chiropractors around the country as busy as a one-legged man in an arse-kicking competition.

    i'm not buying a pickup to win a race, i'm not buying a pickup to go on a road trip, i don't need entertainment systems and gucci bling bling interior. i need a reliable working machine that brings me money instead of costing me money, and that's where the hilux is the best.

    The biggest thing they never talk about on any of these reviews is residual value. The Hilux may not be the best, but you know when you come to sell it it will be worth twice what any other Ute in the segment is worth. That alone makes a huge difference on why you’d pick this over a Ranger!

    Mate , I've got a hilux twin cab 2007 bottom of the range with 276 000 on clock , original motor , never a problem , goes day in day out, runs as smooth as the day it was made . Toyota's , ya gotta love em !

    Reliability end of story. We buy the Hilux due to its long term Reliability and cheap operational cost. The Ford Ranger is a beautiful machine but not a reliable one. ...Respect the Customers Money...

    I really like the Hilux, but they are a bit out of my price range for a work vehicle. I ended up going for a Isuzu D-Max. Its not as flash as the Rangers or Hilux etc, but it is a work horse, and Im pretty happy with it!

    The reason I subscribed to Caradvice, was because I wanted modest, independent, unprejudiced reviews, BUT nowadays its all about Ford Ford Ford Ranger, Ford Ranger and guess what Ford Ranger - I know its build in Australia, and that is why CarAdvice being patriotic treys to sold it to the public. Such strategy is used by the german car magazines that say that their brands are always the best. This review was pointless with all the Ford Ranger references. People buy Hilux because its reliable and you can use it for work, real work..

    • @LuffyBG
      @LuffyBG Před 7 lety +2

      I am just saying what Caradvice says in its reviews, I agree with you about the Ford, but in almost every review they compare something with the Ranger.. its annoying, and it really makes me consider the unprejudiced reviews

    • @gde1989
      @gde1989 Před 7 lety +6

      Its because the Ranger is the benchmark ute in Australia at the moment, and that is unanimous across all media outlets. The Hilux used to be the benchmark and a few years ago all reviews would be Hilux, Hilux, Hilux... but that's just not the case anymore. Anyways, apparently the Ranger might be really good but has very poor reliability and Ford in general has a very poor reputation in Australia at the moment as well, even though most of their cars are highly regarded.

    I would have brought one of these in an heartbeat but when I went to test drive it at 6foot 4 inches(in metric thats f ing tall) couldn't get comfortable my legs were up against the steering wheel and i'm not fat, also here in the UK we get a smaller engine, ended up with a Navara of which I must say i'm very pleased with two years in to ownership, really theres no such thing has a bad pickup anymore just that some are a little bit better than others.

    My 2006 Toyota Tacoma, the American equivalent of Hilux, has now 187,000 miles on the odometer, and still works great. Got a 2.7 L gasoline engine under the hood. The bed is 6 feet long, while the Hilux in the video looks like 5 ft.
    Here in US Ford Ranger comes with a 10 speed automatic gearbox, I'm really curious how long will they last...

    Funny thing about 4wd utes is that is not all about power, or looks, it's part of it but the Hilux overall does everything well and has the reputation and backup service and reliability that people love. Ford and VW etc dont. I reckon it was a bit rough on the road too when new, but it softens over time. Overall i like the Hilux as an all rounder and at about 52k nowadays (SR5) its a good buy .

    The cynicism is laid on thick in this so called review. People aren't as stupid as you make them out to be, people can buy an vehicle they like, but in many cases especially in light commercials people just want it to work. You car journos can swan around in other peoples stuff as much as you like, but when it comes to an ownership proposition people tend to go for a safe prospect.

    • @mattheginger
      @mattheginger Před 7 lety +2

      Exactly. Buying an 50-60K vehicle is a very involved decision. The reviewers only ever seem to mention long term reliability and ownership costs in passing. Not to mention the Ranger has multiple well known faults for years that ford has refused to iron out. At least VW has rectified most of the issues they had initially with the Amarok. My old man has had an 07 sr5 for 10 years, over 300K kms and only now has he had to do anything (replace a seal on the front diff), everything else is original. So he'll probably buy another Toyota to replace it (eventually) and who would blame him?

    • @rsoul7282
      @rsoul7282 Před 7 lety +2

      mattheginger the journalists often are hypnotised by the latest and greatest, the spec sheet, and to be honest it isn't that surprising as they jump in and out of other people's vehicle constantly, even their long term test vehicles only stay for a few months at most, so it's totally different to actually buying and owning something. I have a hilux as a work vehicle and it gets a very hard time carrying near its capacity constantly, towing, driving off road, it has had a few repairs but nothing major, but I struggle to think of another vehicle that could do the job it has done.

    Is this bloke for real?? Not sure where he is based but down here in Tassie where the roads are tough going at the best of times, owning a Toyota is a sensible choice.
    Why spend practically the same money on a competitors vehicle when you can have peace of mind that only Toyota owners have?!
    He also forgot to mention resale value, let’s wait 15-20 years and see if these ford rangers and Volkswagen’s are still on the road let alone selling for decent money.
    There’s good reason that a 1999 Toyota HiLux with low kms will sell for $15k.
    Car Advice please give us relevant car advice.
    Yours Truly, a Volkswagen owner that has replaced parts and repaired his 2010 year vehicle far too many times.....

    I once took my Ford to the dealership to have a few minor things fixed, one of which were broken clips holding up the rear bumper, another was a faulty brake light sensor, and some other minor thing. They charged $70 'diagnostic fee' for each problem.... all of which are were intuitively obvious.. what a rip off, would struggle to justify a Ranger because of that alone

    is it an "embarrassment" if you everday drive the Hilux? and use it normally not only for "real" work?

    Really you have a problem with the drivers who in your opinion don't use it as it should be their choice how they use it seeing it's their money but in a nut shell it's good just the drivers who cause you the problem weird

    To answer your question in the beginning about who takes their $56,000 Hilux and bashes it off road i would say many people in 3rd world countries who can afford them like most south and central American countries

      bebo 138 I own a 2016 3.0 srv in Nicaragua it cost me $41k, over here there's no option but to take it through rivers, mud trails and over trees, to name a few things. I've added a bull bar with a winch, a roll bar, and a snorkel, I'm from San Francisco California and a lot of people on CZcams complain about how this truck is not available in the states, this truck is slow, I couldn't imagine driving around California freeways in the hilux

      Arnaldo gonzalez yea i understand what you mean. My uncle from Honduras owns one and yea its slow but its not the old Hilux slow. Also when im in Nicaragua i see people all the time blaze right past me in the carretera norte in them (even though they are not supposed to be passing most of the time)

    I bought one used a few months back, a work mate had a dig at me for paying so much for a bush basher. Yes that's right a bush basher, I cut my own firewood with forestry permits to keep the family warm. He said I was stupid. I simply said as stupid as the bloke thats got one to crawl through the mall?. I bought it to work, simple.

    Toyota are dinosaurs. Great buisness model. Also getting 600km off a 80 ltr tank is embarrassing in 2018 when the Amarok gets 1000k on highway driving. Also forking out 63k for a rugged x and reverse sensors lol

    It shouldn't be considered offensive but I have observed that the national of any English Speaking Country will appreciate FORD vehicles and declare them comparably the best vehicle in the world.
    The judgement should not be baized. It is deception. I have seen so many Vauxhalls and FORDs catching fires on the road due to electric problems and I have also seen a Toyota Corolla starts and move after rolling five times down a hill.
