this guy has taught me more then school taught me in 12 years wow.
haha that's awesome, thanks man :)
Ironic comment
School taught you how to learn this
School isn't a place for smart people
@@Fuzzled369 "...Then the bell rings and they give you a carton of milk and a piece of paper that says you can go take a dump or somethin...I know that's not a popular opinion, but that's my two cents on the issue."
I'm a musician/songwriter for decades, but I've never gotten into the tech/gear side of things. I decided to learn to record at home. Starting small, using GB. I'm less afraid of the technology thanks to your quick 10 minute GB overview. Definitely going to watch the full length version and subscribe. Thanks!

As someone who recently switched to apple already has years of prod on a windows software, this tutorial was INCREDIBLY helpful as I was able to quickly understand terms and methods you touched on. Thank you
A crisp and clean intro to Gband. I've watched quite a few tutorials for Gband and this is the one with the most information in the least time. Thanks.
thanks a lot Johnny :)
Dude, this is the best tutorial ever! So fast, on point and clever. Thanks!
As someone with lots of experience with DAWs and just now taking a serious look at using Garageband for future projects - this tutorial was fantastic. Lots of information delivered quickly and directly. Thanks so much for your effort and your time!
💯
Thank you!!! I’ve been using the older version of gb for years (so long that Bowie heard my tracks before he passed - that’s how old) and the new version has lost me. You are helping.
obviously no-one can learn GarageBand in 10 minutes but this gives a good perspective of what GarageBand can equip you to do and what all things need to be learnt and practiced...thanks for sharing
Hi, I found this 10-minute video super helpful!
Thank you so much, this was an awesome, digestible video. I really want to get better at producing but I don't want to spend too much yet on an expensive DAW, I'm just getting comfortable with garage band before leveling up to something else. This was very helpful! Thanks :)
I can’t thank you enough for this video! I am a singer-songwriter. I play guitar, but never really play to a click track and every time I open GarageBand I get completely overwhelmed. Decided it’s finally time to face my fears and learn how to use it! Your video was incredibly helpful. I watched it, and immediately went to my computer and made my first electronic song. I appreciate how much you included in such a short video, and I look forward to learning more!

Why are there so many professional song-writers in this GB beginner video. Is it actually possible to write songs without computer these days?
@@typingcat I can only speak for myself. I started writing songs in high school (2005). I would strum a few basic chords, sing my lyrics over them, and record the whole process on a one-track cassette tape recorder, so that I wouldn't forget. Even though technology has advanced a lot since then, my song-writing technique remains essentially the same. Most of the time I write lyrics first, then try to find a melody on guitar or vocals and sing the lyrics in a way that will convey the most emotion. I use a notes app for lyrics, and a one-track voice recorder app on my phone for audio, so that when I have an idea on the go I won't lose it. Singing/writing songs is mostly an emotional outlet for me. Once in a while I play for a live audience, but it is not a career path I am seeking. It's great to write for voice and guitar because then I can actually play my songs for a live audience/unplugged without relying on a track or band. But I have a lot to learn if I am ever going to compose for more instruments/communicate with a band. Learning basic piano now in hopes that it will make it easier to play digital instruments. We shall see! Always interesting to hear about other people's creative process. If you are interested to hear my songs, check out Abbey Hoffman on Spotify or any music platform of your choice.

I gotta say this gave me the exact information I was looking for. I looked at a few of the comments saying it wasn't helpful to them but here's why It was helpful to me. I have been using Pro Tools for 12 years, Ableton for 2 years and I wanted to help a friend with starting to music with Garageband but I was unfamiliar with the interface. I agree the information is given quickly but it is a well put together tutorial.
Thanks very much!
In their defense you did have experience with production and DAWs, however as someone who is slowly learning the ropes i see where your coming from
As someone with experience with Pro Tools and Ableton, what software would you recommend for beginners like me who want to get into mixing tracks? For me it's not about just putting a track together. I want to be able to creatively deside how I use my EQ, compressor, effects, etc.
@@juriaan6064 that’s a great questions and there’s many good options out there. Years ago when I was first learning, Sonar by Cakewalk is what I used and it’s solid software. Many of my peers used FL Studio at that time but i’d almost recommend you start off on Ableton if you can, they do have a light version which is cheaper and you can always upgrade it later. good luck to you! take advantage of as many tutorials as you can before buying and good luck to you!
@@sammah Thanks for the reply! I could really use this information
Thanks a lot! Recently downloaded GarageBand and this video was so clear and efficient. I could really see you enjoyed what you were doing and making and that bought a smile to my face. Have a nice day
Thanks Jake! Glad it was helpful to you :)
Thank you!!! I have had GarageBand for years, but never used it to record anything. Your Video makes me believe that I can. Thank you!!!!
I do appreciate the simple explanation of how simple Apple GarageBand is. It gives me more confidence in a good way to record what I love to take my time with when possible for me. Thank you so much!
I had a Roland 900 recording deck (lost it in a fire, I lost my Shure mics, too. Bummer) so learned quite a bit but I am really wanting to have a recording device on my computer. A local recording studio suggested Garage Band so I am excited to learn. There's always a bright side to everything. Thanks for the great tutorial(s).
This is what I've been searching for. Under 10 minutes. Then after this I can go to more details. But first I want the basic or learn something first. Thank you so much.
I had a go at recording a song using my iPhone and Garageband. The desktop version is definitely easier to get your head around but once you've got the hang of it, it's surprisingly good. I'm kinda shocked at how good songs can turn out using it tbh. This tutorial definitely would have been useful when I first started though!
Thank you so much this is so useful. I’m going to write these commands on a piece of paper so it’s in front of me when I need it.
ive been wanting to get into music production for years now, but every tutorial ive watched just leaves me more confused and discouraged. now, ive never even LOOKED at garageband in my life and already i feel like i understand something. so thanks mate
Thank you so much dude , I really wanted to be a song artist myself so this tutorial has really helped me !
he sounds like Jake Gyllenhaal and now I can't unhear it
Got that once before
EXACTLY
OH MY GOD
he does!
Let me know if you have any GarageBand questions, I'd be happy to help 🎵
On my iiPad I recently downloaded the midi file for a song. When I imported it into GarageBand the tracks were allocated to the wrong instruments. The drums midi information is on a synth track. I tried to create a drum track and drag the midi information (in the track.it says drums) into my newly created drum track and it says Drums Track. Drag drum region here. It has a circle with a line through it. How do I change the instrument on an imported midi file or how do I copy the midi information so I can paste it a drum track. Also, it’s not just drums. The bass midi file is on the “drum” track. I have also disables automation on the tracks.
Thanks
Hi Dennis, have you tried creating a fresh drum track and then copy and paste the midi notes to that track?
Heyyy. Love the video btw. I hope all of u guys are doing good. I have been using garageband for a while and only recently started a channel where I have made some songs. Unfortunately my version is very old but I have tried my best. Hopefully if I keep at it I can be as good as you and others. Tell me what u guys think honestly idm.

Is there a Garbageband app or equivalent for Android phones?
If you have a melody in your head, is there a way to match chords or a way to make a chordal arrangement for it if you don’t play instruments? Is there an app for that or do any DAW’s help with the process?
Wow this was so helpful I always wondered how to slowly bring out the music and at 7:10 you pretty much show it awesome
Hey Guys, thanks for watching. I've been using garageband for a while and yet still think that I have problems with using it, sometimes I also use soundtrap DAW and today I think it's far as cheap I can go to using a online music software, I now know a little more about GarageBand from this helpful video.
Thank you for giving me the courage to try GarageBand again. After 2 hours I lay down the instrumentals to a song I wrote (4 tracks). Is there a way to add a bar in the middle of a song? If so, Do you have a tutorial for that?

Thanks for making this vid. Im new with recording and just ordered all my hardware. Starting to get familiarized with garagband app while waiting. Keep creating music! God bless
I found this really helpful. I can only learn in small steps. This helped me a lot. Looking forward to more videos. ❤
New to GarageBand on the Mac Pro. Have 7 years of simply using the iPhone. Still getting used to all the extra features.
This was helpful thanks!
Excellent video. for the past 3 years, have recorded using my iPhone and now that I have a Mac Pro, it's more difficult for me to learn GarageBand and seems overwhelming with all the features. Will use your tutorials as a basis for learning. Thanks for sharing.
WOW THIS IS EVERYTHING IVE WANTED TO LEARN FOR YEARS THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!
Thank you! I probably took a good 30 mins to watch this all and take notes, cheers! 😃🙏🏽 I want to make theme music for videos showcasing my SciFi books! 📚
as a 5+ year user of FL, coming back to a beginner video when trying out garageband is refreshing!
Hey there! I got to about 2:20, then quickly realized that I’m probably going to need the long version. Thanks for this!! 🙂
Yea, this is cool. I know the basic buzzwords of audio and recording, and this was super helpful, even to just get me started. Keep doing you. Thank you.
Brooo thank you so much for this well thought out GB tutorial. I just upgraded to using GB Mac from the iOS version and this tutorial has helped save so much time and confusion. I checked out your music also and its dope. You've gained a new CZcams and Spotify follower. lol
thank you for checking me out on Spotify!! means a lot. And I’m glad the video was helpful. Come back if you have any questions!
Great information in this. Not exactly what I was looking for (iPad only) but spot on for Mac users and anyone curious about this software in general. Thanks for the vid.

Love 💗 and Thank you from India dear. This is my initial time in digital side of music. Helped me a lot. Subscribed and pressed the bell icon as well.
Fantastic Stuff, Thank you very Much this helped a lot with the learning process and the Doing Process.
That was a fantastic overview in no time. Thank you for saving me hours of unnecessary blabla!
Thankyou for this video, I learnt how to operate the app and create a song!
So now you talk at what I consider normal speed. Thank god!!!!!!!!!!! On the complete course (which is great) between each word, I wait for the next one. IT TURNED ME CRAZY.
Hello Charles. I am going to use garageband to create background music for a short animated video I'm doing. Opening this powerful app, I didn't know what to do or where to begin! You answered that call because you are a good teacher. Thank you.
Thanks Jack! I appreciate the supportive and kind words. I’m really glad that it was helpful to you.
The most useful 10-min-Tutorial I have seen so far ... loving it, thanks! :)
Great tutorial! Just what I was looking for
Awesome. Great to hear Stephen!
I started playing the garage band app during the pandemic I had piano lessons many years ago but wasn’t interested in them so I forgot everything , but I started to play by ear on the app and I don’t read music I just listen to what sounds are good together and I have composed a small tune but when I try to record that’s when all the mistakes happen, I may never go on stage because of stage fright lol 😅 it’s very fun to create your own music, I got to add here that I have found out that after awhile you start to feel the music , this is how to create memory
Thanks. I could use all the help I could get. Hopefully I'll have a track in which I'm using more than an Ipad mic real soon
Ok this is a great video. Thank you for the inspiration. And insight.
I loved your video! Thank you so much , best vibes for you and your work☄🥰

What a pleasure to to get profound knowledge in an unexcited way
Bro i have some garageband drill tutorials and beats on my channel. They will surely help
so basically, to use GarageBand i need to know how to play a keyboard or other instruments....
it would help a lot but it’s not necessary as you can draw notes in
@@CharlesCleyn That is what I need. Drawing notes you say.
@Crytonic how
it’s requirement that you do not
So I need to know how to make music to make music? That’s wack.
I'm not sure who this video is aimed at.
It's way too advanced for beginners and presumably those familiar with GB won't need it.
Even at 1:39 in Charles (who seems like a lovely guy by the way!) says he is using a drum track. Well that's awesome. but....
- is it a stock track stored in the program?
- did you record it yourself?
- did you use a proper drum kit?
- did you use an electric kit?
- did you use a drum machine?
- did you use an interface to connect it to your computer/laptop?
- or did you use a multi track mixer with a USB port?
- if you used a proper drum kit, how many mics did you use?
- once you'd set up your drums/drum machine, how did you actually begin recording?
- how do you use the program to record tracks? (which bits do you "click" on?)
From a novice perspective, all these things need to be addressed before you even begin talking about the things you cover in this tutorial.
Also, there's an awful lot of jargon. A lot of terminology that a novice wouldn't be familiar with.
The tutorial moves along way too fast and I'm not sure it's helpful. It may even be counter-productive as it may make a novice feel stupid.
Agreed, not for a beginner, way to fast and skips alot of steps.
It looks like it’s chopped and edited from a longer video
Thank you so much!
Great job, thanks!
Really useful. Thanks so much. The journey has started.....
Thanks bro for a great video. Which version of Garageband do you recommend in 2023? The latest which is 10.4.8?

What is the name of the track in the background? I really love it. As well as your intro video. I appreciate the effort, great guide!
thanks chuck, good job
omg thank you sooo much for that video!!!!
Thanks this is perfect. I didn't know Garageband but I do know the Mac computer very well.
that will help you a ton, half the battle of producing and making music nowadays is knowing how to work a computer well!
That was helpful
Thank you
Ive been using GarageBand to make music, using only my phone, I can definitely see it being a lot easier if I were using a Pc or Laptop which I don’t have, I usually I make music for fun but this is definitely helpful for me to improve and understand how the stuff works and how to actually use them
It’s definitely much more flexible if you can manage to get a computer
As a new and frequently bewildered user of Garageband, this has been very helpful. Thanks :)
thanks Mark, if you're just starting out with GB then this video might also be helpful to you as it is SUPER beginner friendly: czcams.com/video/RpOfou3K-L8/video.html

Thank you so much 😀😀😀😀
Hey man, this a great tutorial, thank you. I have a Scarlett Solo and tried using Protools but it's way too processor heavy for my old Macbook. I tried switching to GB which is version 5 (because the Macbook is so old it won't support the updates). I have set the Scarlett as the audio input and output. I can hear my guitar through the headphones but it won't register the EQ on the guitar track and won't record it. It does work with the Microphone but does this sound like something you could advise ,me with please?
Hey Bad Hammer, do you have any monitoring on? It should be like an orange/yellow color on the track? This shouldn't affect the recording but it might help you hear the eq in real time. Does it start recording but you don't see any signal coming through?
this is the best video on youtube tks
Great information, Just Got a NEW Mac so Excited to Dive in ! Very Informative , I'm already Breezing through. I'll be in LOGIC sooner than Expected lol

Thank you for this very informative video! I noticed your slider to set rec levels in GragaBand is NOT greyed out. I have 3 different recording interfaces, one of them (Line6) can be adjusted, as far as rec levels, in GarageBand, the other two (Yamaha, Helix) cannot - the slider is also greyed out. Not sure if this is an issue with my setup, MacOS, drivers etc, or it is just interface-dependent.
Thank you
