I put my foot through my kick drum head and needed a new one.. figured it'd be fun to record before and after samples... and play around with a couple microphones (and pillow/no pillow in the kick drum). It WAS fun.

Cool to quickly peer over your shoulder for different ideas of what can work. I've always used a pillow for the kick, I might try removing it and see how that sits in a mix. Love the format, thanks for making time for us

lately, I've been having fun trying to get the main tone of the kick from a condenser mic low out in front of the kick about 4 feet... and fill in the thump/and punch with an inside mic.
It sounds cool both with and without a pillow but I find the pillow dries out the ring in a way that helps in a busier, more dense arrangement.
I'm hoping to put a video together with an example of kick mic pairs soon!
