to be fair, john had no right to refuse. if he had just done it, he would only have to deal with cassian.
That's not true? Santino always planned to kill John after the job was done. He was a loose end.
John had finished his part of the deal, and what Antonio said is he's gonna avenge his sister's death, otherwise.. What would people think of him?
He forcibly brought back John into killing while he didn't want that, he simply wanted to honor the agreement.

Charon really is the best character in all this franchise
It also subtlely points out that (as is common in many areas) that the dog was solely being terminated because of its "breed" being seen as dangerous and threatening.

I love how gentle the way Winston called John as "Jonathan". Its like you're trying to calm your child. While Santino's "Jonathan" sounds like you're mocking your sibling
After the ending of John Wick 4, we now know why it sounded so fatherly...
Something I love about this scene, John knows Santino is here, he knows where he will be, but he'll still come in and be polite and acknowledge Charon as always rather than just brush past to complete his mission.

Charon's eyes from 0:11 to 0:14 express everything he feels and knows about what is going to happen. He knows that killing is illegal on hotel grounds, and he also knows that Wick knows. And he also knows that despite all that, he understands that what John is about to do is inevitable nonetheless, and that it will be a shame, because it means John will no longer be welcome at the hotel, and will eventually be persona-non-grata.

You gotta realize that within a VERY short time span, John has lost his wife, was assaulted in his own house, watched his dog killed before his eyes, had his car stolen and THEN had his entire house blown up. There’s only so far you can push a man... John had simply had enough, rules didn’t matter to him anymore.

I think my favorite part about this scene is that no one reacts. They're surprised a little bit, but no one flinched. Truly, a room of people who work in the underground.

The unfortunate part is if Santino had just kept his mouth shut and not provoked John by echoing Winston’s warning about walking away, word for word, he probably might’ve lived.
Santino thinks that he is untouchable as long as he is within the walls of the Continental Hotel. He thinks that no one will not dare to break the rules or risk hunted down by the High Table. I think John Wick will kill him regardless as Santino can still ordering hits on John Wick within the confines of the Continental Hotel. So he decides to break the rule and risk being hunted down.
The entire point is that Santino is a sleazy little worm with absolutely no honor compared to his sister and her crowd. Gianna knew why John had come and chose to go out on her own terms. Cassian understood why John did what he did and held his own code of honor too. Santino was a man greedy for power and really thought he understood John. He failed.
You know the line "Don't bite the hand that feeds you?" He should have heeded the opposite. "Don't strike the hound that hunts for you."

Plus Santino would've found himself with the liberty to double the bounty repeatedly on John's head if he stayed in the Continental.
John was gonna kill him no matter what santino had said something or kept his mouth shut. Santino was gonna do either way
Important lesson for life in this scene. Rules work only so long as people are willing to obey them. Push someone hard enough and there's absolutely nothing stopping them from turning your skull into a soup bowl.
But then the rules will be enforced after, punishing the perpetrator and discouraging others from breaking them. Like civilized society should be. So I don’t recommend breaking them

No, I think it was pretty clear at 0:37 that Santino knew he was dead. His expression changes from nonchalant to fear. And then as another comment pointed out, his hand was starting to tremble when he ate his last bite.

I love how Santino’s hubris was his downfall. Getting John to honor the Marker even though he knew John wanted nothing less gave him a false sense of confidence that John would also never break the Continental’s rule as well. He failed to understand that there is one thing John cares even more about at this point in his life than honoring the code of the assassin, and that’s payback. The Continental was never a refuge for Santino: it was a trap created by his own misplaced confidence, a trap John gladly took advantage of like the calculated killer he is. Seeing John cut off that snarky comment of someone hiding in their supposed privilege made for a very satisfying conclusion.
Hubris is the downfall of every single boss that John kills in this series. They always think that their accumulated power and the rules will protect them, and John comes in showing them that they are all still men who are just as easily killed by lead as anyone else. Viggo's son thought that his father's power made him invincible. John quickly shows up that he's wrong. Viggo knows John's reputation and capabilities, but still thinks that his gang gives him power over him. John proves him otherwise. Santino thinks that the rules of the Underworld and the Continental protect him. They don't, not when John doesn't care about the rules anymore.
Only thing is, I wish the Adjudicator and the High Table got their comeuppance as well. I wish John could have shown them that despite how high and might and even godlike they appear to be to the Underworld players, that they are also just men. They may all appear to be gods of this world, but they are still just men who follow rules.

@@Richard-Espanol yep, saw it on release day. It was fantastic. And it's just another example of a man with hubris who thought that the rules made him a God. I also love the character of Mr. Nobody. He was just great. He acts as a sort of outsider to the underworld, and that's something that this series needed. I'm glad we got it.
Lesson of the series for me: leave John wick alone.

It was so satisfying seeing that arrogant a-hole being be killed thinking he never had to get in his hands dirty. He only talked big when he thought had all the cards.
Mr. Nobody was a very awesome addition to the JW universe! I'd love to see the new characters get some more spotlight in spin offs. Mr. Nobody got to see the last moments of a legend. Not to mention he took John on and lost but was spared. He definitely has his own motivations and kind of like you said made a very fun and interesting addition to the story.

I love the little detail of showing John Wick abandoning trigger discipline, holding the pistol with finger on trigger while he waddles towards Santino in disgust. Just shows how over it he is in the moment.
You don’t put your finger on the trigger unless you fully intend to kill someone. It just shows he had no plans not to discharge that weapon.
He also does this in the first movie when he picks up his HK as Viggo’s kill squad breaks into his house
there was only one round and he planned to use it... winston saw him and noticed it.

The guy burnt John's house, most importantly photos of John and Helen down to ashes, made John killed his friend, dare to call John by Jonathan and really, really got the nerve to tell the world's greatest assassin to walk away. That shot was terrifying and satisfying at the same time.

I love how they deliberately made this the loudest gunshot in the whole series. It startles you. Makes you flinch. It is meant to shock you. And then he voices the same words echoing through your mind. "What have you done?"

I love how John Wick's expression is always angry or only slightly relieved when he kills the main enemy. Shows he doesn't find enjoyment, but he still believes in vengeance

The thing about John Wick is because he’s a retired professional assassin. Professional assassins just do their job and then just leave. No monologue, no taunting, no torturing. Just do the job, and leave.
It think it’s a mix of him being a retired professional assassin, and him just wanting to retire and leave it behind.

Notice how the gun John uses to kill him was Ares's gun, but Ares had a suppressor on her gun. He deliberately took it off because there was literally no point in silencing the shot, it served more as a message that John didn't care anymore.
I’ll never forget that moment in the theatre watching it..we went nuts and lost our minds in cheer and applause. What a moment.. Was the best scene in the whole series (imo).

I'll always remember Lance Reddick first for his most famous line from this character. He has such a distinctive voice. RIP LEGEND!
Fun Fact: The director actually said that the real cast of John Wick is Liam Neeson, but then on Liam went missing and Keanu Reeves just arrived on set and start shooting everyone. The director caught the massacre and made it the movie somehow.

It's like Charon knew what he was going to do. Even told him where Santino was without questioning. Didn't bother to stop him for a couple of reasons. Clearly, there's no stopping John at this point. And, Charon is a real homie. Always had his back, even in the final moments of Chapter 3 where they both destroyed those armored dudes together
He is the concierge.
His job is to get the guests what they want.

Keanu's acting is so great in this movie. You just can't help but feel sorry for John despite who he is. This scene is perfect example, John is so sick of this, he just can't handle anymore and kills him out of pure rage. He doesn't care if he dies, he just says - "Finished it".

Honestly, this is one of my favorite scenes in the entire series of films, because it really honors the hype of who John is. They all say “he’s a man of focus, commitment, sheer will.” And I find so often in film that characters are hyped up, but in actuality they don’t have any follow through or deeds to give them credibility. John does. Absolutely love that.

In the first Movie, Perkins willing to break Continental Rules over 4 Million USD to kill John Wick. Now John has 7 Million Bounty because of Santino, John is forced to break the rules because not even in Continental can guarantee his safety at this point.

i love that during the whole scene, Winston was trying to stop John from killing him, because i think he really apreciated John, at least enough to not want to have to excommunicad him. If it were anyone else, i don't thing he'll have acted the way he did, more like warning that person in a more professional way, and then acting accodingly insted of looking shocked and say "...what have you done?".
I mean... in the first movie, he killed that women who broke the rules like it was nothing, while with John all was shock and regret.

You can tell he respects John considering that he didn't revoke his membership to the Continental and have killed immediately unlike Miss Perkins.
Well, yeah. It was clear from the previous movie that they have a much deeper history than many of the other assassins, and Winston knows that John has never really been the "bad guy" in these conflicts. He sees John as just a guy who's been fighting for his freedom, yet keeps getting pulled back into the darkness unwillingly.
To put it simply, they're actually friends, beyond the business relationship. He seems almost like a father figure to John.

That there wasn't a tone of surprise that he broke continental rule. Everyone knowns at what length John will take things. That was a note of dread. It was knowing John had just forsaken all that he had built for them and that he has the sheer will power to tear it all down.....and there isnt a soul alive that can stop him.
With that 1 shot John re-wrote everyones fate.

He knew that John was gonna either kill Santino on company grounds and risk his life down the road or respect company grounds to the point where he let Santino live and wait until he leaves the hotel. What a genius.
