  • The Vikings of Odin's Island were asked to represent the Viking Age at a local country fair here in Norway. We set up our Viking camp the night before. As usual, I took an early morning walk. This time I brought my bow and arrows down into the manor's gardens.

    You and I as well a some others I know of are born into the wrong century , we would feel more at ease and at home in an earlier time period , 12 century or so

    Cows are quit trainable in a sense. They will arrive to specific feeding area each day at the same time and for milk cows they will arrive at the barn to be milked in the morning and afternoon depending on your milking schedule.. Its a routine that needs to be established then becomes well routine. As someone mentioned the term Herd mentality is a social behavior based on survival in numbers. I was never a Farmer/Rancher myself but grew up among them and know enough to be dangerous ;)

    It is impossible to put into words the feeling I get when watching your videos. From the history, to the nature it brings a swell to my life. Continue to post, I will continue to watch. Skal.

    James Mowat - you're correct. The leader is usually the alpha female, with the alpha bull having breeding rights, but not lead rights among milk and beef herds. The cows will also follow single file down a cow track to get to the pastures for grazing or the best water source. I used to work at an animal park and watched this behavior among the bison, watusi and long horn cows.
    This is one of the reasons that early European societies recognized the wisdom of their women, and respected it. The women used to lead the village to health and prosperity, while the men defended, or went raiding and trading as a way to bring in trade goods and knowledge.

    Great video! The cows walk in straight lines because like all convicts, their spirit has been domesticated.

    That is a huge tent, having put up smaller versions I can only imagine how much practice that one must take to put up and get right in a timely fashion. Nice video. :)

      rhialobran It's actually quite simple to put up, but it weighs a ton. I have even done it alone, though that takes a bit of effort.

    It must be there herd instinct. They usually follow each other. That would be good to do that.

  • @jams854
    @jams854 Před 7 lety +3

    Awesome video, as for the cows as a child my step father told me most herds have a leader and where they go the others will follow, sometimes its them that decide where to graze or where to sleep, I could be wrong but that explanation always made sense to me as for why the move in a line rather than a group I have no idea.

    You got a local cow commute on your hands... Obviously they are walking from the stable (and/or the place they are getting milked) to there day jobs, which is eating grass, relaxing in the pasture/re-chewing the grass and digesting it to produce milk... That's what cows do best...

    Hello from New Zealand Bjorn. If the farm you are on has a dairy they may be on the way to be milked. I grew up on a farm and the cows learn and will bring themselves to the dairy to milked at same time of day, twice a day everyday.

    Pretty sure there is zero evidence of anyone using stone age flat bows in the viking period. The bow on this video is clearly a stone age flat bow. Only bows I am aware of that have been found during the viking period are either Yew longbows or Elm long bows with deflex tips. Happy to be corrected of flat bow finds from the period...

    That is one big tree you're leaning against at 4:00. And, it looks like your new backrest is comfortable. :-)
    Marching band? :-/ ... not my kind of music either, and doesn't really fit the Viking environment. I can only imagine what the Vikings would have thought if one of those bands marched into camp. haha Fun to imagine, maybe not for the band though. ;-)
    Thanks for sharing Bjorn, was really nice to be a part of.

      I just ordered a few yards of 80% linen "fustian" fabric, to make myself a new tunic. Been a viking in the Society for Creative Anachronisms for about 43 years. Made(or modified) nearly all my clothes and gear myself. I suppose I might style myself a "jarl", as I possess sword, axe, chainmaille, and helmet, as well as bow/arrows, seax and shield
