If you enjoyed this look at the past, I think you'll enjoy my video about if Masticore was the best creature in Magic: czcams.com/video/YBo-bSA2zDo/video.html
So glad this concept came back. Magic cards made by people outside WOTC have always fascinated me. Now if only they could do this with a whole set, similar to what they did in M15
As somebody who was loosely involved with the M15 promotion, I'll say that I think it is SO COOL and also a ton of work. Maybe we'll see it again someday. :)
@@GoodMorningMagic How about for a Commander-specific set, you have everyone vote on designs for 32 new cards, one for each color identity?
@@GoodMorningMagic would it be any easier to do as a secret lair rather than part of a set, since those designs can be more one-off?
Did they have a lot of outside consultation for m15?
@@thanhavictus There were 14 cards designed by people outside of Wizards. They're credited at the bottom of the card. For example, Shield of the Avatar was designed by Richard Garriott. There was also a 15th card designed by people outside of Wizards - Waste Not, which was designed by the Magic community as part of You Make the Card.
This is the kind of content someone with deep love for the history of the game makes. We are lucky to have you making videos about magic. More please
Really glad you enjoyed it :)
Please ensure when reprinting these, that the flavour text still mentions the champs. This will keep the "Bob" legacy alive
Always loved Sylvan Safekeeper. Didn’t know there was a story behind it, let alone one THAT cool. Amazing content Gavin!
Definitely one of the least known ones! Glad you enjoyed that story. :)
The fact that his second submission was Memory Lapse (which already existed) for an additional U still baffles me.
@@CB-ke7eq i’m a month late but the card he submitted was a counter that puts itself on top of your library. so you draw it every turn, extremely unfun
It needs a new foil printing!
Glad this thing came back! I'm wondering if champions that "skipped" this kind of opportunity could do their card too in the future.
As an old timer, I am very excited for all of the history videos - some because I shared parts of them, and some because they surprise even me.
Wow! I'm amazed that I can surprise even you. Glad you enjoyed it :)
This video was a DELIGHT Gavin. Keep this up. Loving these slightly deeper looks into traditional, "inside info", and mtg shorthand. I'm going to sleeve up four YUTAs for sure to try them out.
I love that you called it Yuta, that's awesome. :) Thanks for the kind comment!
I enjoyed this nice review of the “good old days” as it helps people like me who have been lapsed from the game for a while recap the history of MTGs iconic players. Thank you Gavin!
You're welcome and glad you enjoyed it!
Monetary prizing is good and improtant. But man, getting your own card is something truly exciting.
This series really is wonderful. And this is a great episode in the series.
Shadowmage infiltrator was only very briefly a chase card. Then people figured out that it wasn't even the best card at its mana cost in that set and it didn't see much play until the time spiral reprint.
I knew someone who played back then and, after using Psychatog as a proxy in testing for a bit, cause like you said, same cost, was like "can I just use this instead?"
The problem to the Infiltrator's success was Wild Mongrel, and more particularly its often overlooked colour changing ability. Changing te Wil Mongrel's colour to black meant it could block Shadowmage Infiltrator all day long. Also, Psychatog didn't help.
Nobody ever gave a shit about it.
Thank you for this video, Gavin. Please keep up the good work and consider making more historical looks back such as this!
My favorite Invitational card has to be Snapcaster Mage, but I've enjoyed playing with nearly all of them, including Rootwater Thief and Voidmage Prodigy
yes please more like this
This was a great video! Loved the respect for all the champions and getting to see the early drafts of their designs! Always love to hear about when R&D has to trial things with different casting costs or abilities, makes me feel more connected to all the cards and why the are what they are!
I have collected every Invitational card and I was so excited when Javier got his card in Eldraine, and Paulo's made me so happy, because he is one of my favourite pro's and I love Spellbinder's effect.
Being relative new to the game is so cool to see this cards make a comeback. Its so fun and you learn the history of the game and its players.
Back into magic after 20 years or so, new to your channel, love the video format. Thank you
That's awesome! Welcome back and glad you're enjoying them. :)
I knew about Dark Confidant, but...wow, this was such a cool story for me to see. Now that I know the original idea (which was an awesome one from a fan's perspective), and the new idea (which is still awesome but now takes the administrative R&D resources into account), I cannot wait to see more of this in the future.
Love that this is a part of the living legacy of my favorite game, thanks for the spotlight.
I have always been a fan of Snapcaster Mage. Love to see these player legacy cards coming back into the game.
I really wish this card profitably blocked Ragavan like Takahashi wanted.
And Thalia aswell
“Last word on a land, too powerful. Let’s make it Snapcaster Mage instead.” Cool video even though I knew most of this it’s nice to remember the history.
I'm sure that Snapcaster Mage won't cause any problems... 👀
It’s cool to learn some history as a new magic player. I’m a fan of Darwin as a game designer because of star realms, I knew he was a high level mtg player once upon a time but didn’t know details. Great video!
This made me smile in a heartwarming way. Thank you for making my day. Can't wait to cast Paulo. 😍
This history was great. Loved it. More like this! "Legendary History" seems like a great name for the playlist!
A big thank you for the very colorful history of MtG!
Really loving these deep dives on magic's history. Keep it up!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. :)
u really have a voice that i can listen to for hours ^^ very appealing :) works perfectly for youtube videos .)
This was AWESOME. On par with Rhystic Studies. Great work!!!!!
Love getting a look at what was going on in magic when the information was confined to magazines I could only occasionally afford, and then how it continued through the time I wasn't p laying, and how it's showing up in contemporary magic. I'll happily watch your videos where you tell the stories of the older gamer at the lgs.
Bonus - someone told me Bout my root water thief being designed as such, but no one ever told me avalanche riders, a fav of mine, was also champion-designed - so cool!
I love your call back "the place... the time" of the first tournament. Thankyou for your goose bump inducing word use.
Thanks to 2000s eras documentaries for training me to do that :p Glad you dug it!
10:15 You didn’t even mention the funniest part of that format: Kai Budde’s match-winning play was “Tinker for Jeweled Bird, concede”.
(Ante cards were legal in that format, and matches were decided not by win/loss record, but by total amount won via ante. He’s the only player ever to win a major tournament by losing.)
I enjoyed this in depth look into the past and would like to see more like it.
Really cool video! Love the behind the scenes history.
Great episode, very cool to hear the full story!
I like videos like this going over the history of MtG. Keep them coming!
awesome video! love the deep dive histories
Loved seeing all these!
I'm so excited for Nathan Steuer's card. I knew about Snapcaster Mage and Dark Confidant, but I had no idea that Sylvan Safekeeper and Meddling Mage were invitational cards!
It's kinda funny, Rakdos Augermage was an allstar in my kitchen table magic deck when I was young. Yeah sure it isn't strong competitively, but we didn't know that at the time. In most cases I'd use it to get into Hellbent and dumpster anything they were saving to deal with my agro, then he could also fight well if I wasn't ready to do that. I get everything you said about it and it makes sense, but I for one am glad it got printed, it was one of my favourite cards when I started getting back into magic as a teen and I still use it in my Anje commander deck to this day.
pretty awesome vid. Keep it up!
What a video! Thank you Gavin!
Absolutely incredible. Great vid
If ever bring back From The Vaults, including next World Champion card, this will be it!
FTV: Champions
Love the video thank you. More please!
Phenomenal video and thanks Yuta. Faeries need more of this type of card printed.
This is an amazing video!! Snap caster is still a favorite of mine to jam into any modern deck with blue, even as it is being power crept out.
Love these history lessons! More more more!
I'm curious what "provide some thoughts" for the player spotlight means? How much creative control do the Champs get on the final iteration fo the card?
I remember Yuta saying he asked for his card to be a Faerie, something they could do, and to be a 1/3 with Flash so it could block Thalia. The second one was a no on the stats, he didn't say if the original card had flash.
Really nice video. Enjoyed it a lot
This was a great overview, and I'm glad the idea survived! Seeing Paulo's face on a card was awesome, and I'm glad it was a good one too. Can't ever beat Snappy though, I can't wait to play it in Historic with the original art.
I wish you could give more details on what the world champions were able to do with their cards and what changes they made. You said they gave some thoughts on the card, so I assume they had some ability to affect the cards themselves. It's be nice to know what parts of the cards we really have to thank the pros for, and I enjoyed hearing the specifics of the design process for the invitational cards.
The invitational is such a cool idea, I’m really happy it got brought back with the player spotlight. Personally I think they should reprint the older invitational cards with the modern frame and the players name in the flavor text to cement the legacy of those players even for the cards that don’t see too much play. Plus the fact that several of these have gotten reprints without the players likeness feels like we need to bring them back.
Super cool video!
Time to win a dozen championships to get all my custom cards in haha, jokes aside what a neat concept honouring people this way, it’s so cool to see it back and learn more about it!
What's really fun is to find a bonus bulk common from 10 years ago that's useless in draft or constructed, a 3/3 for 5 mana, and worth less than when it 1st came out! Or What's super exciting is to pay more for a box of set boosters only to discover most of the packs gave one bulk rare, because the other rare slots were taken up by alternate art uncommon, or better yet commons -- which is especially great since you don't draft set boosters, so they're doubly useless! And don't forget the art card! Who doesn't want a non - playable piece of cardboard with zero value ... but maybe it'll be a gold signature card *wow*...and it'll be all the previous plus worth an extra shiny nickel! Then don't forget Collector boosters, with their contents being mostly Pringled commons & uncommon, which every collector loves taking up space in their trash bins -- that premium quadruple price per pack really helps settle that delicious regret in your stomach -- especially when it's a masters set with double the price that's already quadrupled but the number of packs has been cut from 12 to 4!!! Ooooh, the excitement of gambling when the stakes are even higher, but that's the only way to get a "chance" at those super ultra duper mega meyah special treatment rarer than rare cards, which you have a better "chance" in he'll of getting a drop of Satan's piss in your mouth than ever finding! But,hey!!! - have more FUN & buy more!!! You are soooo right, fun, fun, fn FUN!!!
Great video!
The Invitational was my dream when I was younger. Well, it still technically is, I just know that it won't ever be reality, for a bunch of reasons. But HECK, to be there, what a crazy dream °_°
The highest honour, truly.
Very cool and well made episode. Snapcaster mage is one of my all time favorites! Yuuta Takahashi is my favorite pro player and faeries is my favorite tribe, so this new card has me so hyped! This may just be my new favorite! Love seeing more tribe support for faeries!! Now we just need a payoff faerie commander!
Absolutely loved this video. Keep up the great work
Glad you enjoyed it!! :)
Fantastic video, I actually teared up a little…#%! your perfect music choices and pacing 😉
Wow! Hey, I'm glad you enjoyed it so much that it made your a lil' emotional, because I definitely was when working on this! Thanks for the kind note. :)
Love these videos on magic history
I completely forgot about Rakdos Augermage. Pretty sure I even have one.
I remember reading a story once about Jon Finkel and someone he knew being surprised to discover that he had his face on a Magic card. The person asked if his card was any good, and he had to say that it would have been--if they hadn't also made Psychatog, which turned out to be a far more powerful card, at the exact same mana cost in the exact same set.
I love this kind of video!
That was Fire!! Please for the love of Magic!
Can we please bring back faeries and get some busted fun back!
I've got some thoughts
Force of fae,
3UU - legendary
2/4 flying flash
Exile a faerie from your hand
Cast this card from your (hand)
To play it without paying its mana cost
When etb counter target creature with mana 5 or less
Oh something else
(Tall tales)
May only have one of this type in your deck
One for each color and a artifact
So red could be a lightning bolt
For 4 damage
Black can be a dark ritual one black add 3 B mana, you loose 3 life
Blue U
Each player draws 3 cards
White exile target creature and target creature gains invincible until end of turn
Green
Add a creature and land from your deck to your hand opponent gains 5 life
Artifact
Blooming lotus
Sacrifice it to add 2 mana of any color this turn
Opponent adds 1 mana during their main phase 1
Exile this card
I have an idea- let each HoF player select their favorite card, maybe from their winning deck or notable card, and make art with them on it for a series of Secret Lairs! Would be an extremely cool Secret Lair series to celebrate the return of paper magic events! Also include the casters!
Great content.
I play Rakdos Augermage in my Hellbent Madness Commander deck with Malfegor as the commander. It lives on through me.
I really love that it was decided to keep doing player cards, but I would love if the invitationals themselves came back WEIRD FORMATS AND ALL. My favorite part of magic is weird formats!
So glad it's back!
Good video. I would like to see another talking about people on cards, like Elves of Deep Shadow and Autumn Willow.
Rootwater Thief also lets you exile target card from your deck onto your lap. You may put that card into your hand.
the story of the ruel brothers wanting a flip card so they both appear on it is wholesome af
The submitted Penguin cards in almost all other invitationals because the really wanted there to be a penguin card in magic
How do you feel about the player no longer appearing on modern reprints of the card anymore, Like Solemn Simulacrum
Wisedrafter's Will in a commander precon this year, im calling it
VERY cool!!!!
It's interesting to see that knowing how to play the game well does not easily mean being able to design the game well. Goes to show that people are smart in many different ways.
John Finkels Invitational win was the most iconic IMHO. I believe that years weird format was Torunament of Champions, where the format was to bid starting hand size and life reduction to win the use of a formers championship deck. That year, Finkels had won Worlds, and had then went on to win the Invitational using Zak Dolan’s aka the first MTG world championship deck. So cool.
Oh man, that takes me back. So cool indeed!
@@GoodMorningMagic videos like this are so good! IMHO it’s important to remember how far we’ve come and how “darker” times were. I literally got back into MTG after a 15(?) year gap by looking at videos like this while pondering to myself “I wonder if Savannah Lions is still the best one drop” and “did Erhnam and Juzam Djinn ever find successors?” only to find myself exclaiming “2/2s and 2/3s for 2!? WITH UPSIDE!?!?!””.
I am very excited to add Yuta to my cube, what a fantastic card!
Love this
I always loved Rootwater Thief. I still use it in my Edh decks to pick combo pieces from my opponents decks
I think I have to say that meddling mage is my favorite. blind names are always so interesting and I feel like modern humans would not have been as big of a deck for as long as it was without it
Is there any discussion about going back and granting other recent world champions like Jensen, Manfield, Shenhar, etc... their own cards?
While I always found the art funny looking on these cards, most of them were pretty important at some point, many still see play, I think lots of good ended up coming out of their creation. Nice to see the new variation of the program, it sounds a lot more streamlined.
The invitational cards are some of my absolute favorites. It would be great to see Dark Confidant and Snapcaster Mage reprinted into Pioneer to breathe some new life into them after their departure from Modern.
I love that the cards for world champions are actually great cards, seeing them cast from time to time is a lovely reminder of the great players of our game.
Wow this card will be so cool to play on MTGO in Planeschase with my friends, once they fix planeschase on MTGO of course
For most my magic career, I always correct people who say Sad Robot, his name is Jens. I love invitational cards and love telling these stories
I think back draft is a really fun idea lol we should bring it back
Backdraft is a good way to play Magic... exactly one time. Haha
I've thought long and hard about what I'd do if I got to design an invitational card, and the thing I'd want to pressure R&D about is that I'd want write the art brief or be allowed to do the art for a booster fun variant. I'd also do it as a favor to a community I love and for corporate synergy that I imagine Hasbro would greatly approve of. That being said, it'd be a little something like this design wise.
Pinkie Pie, Ravnican Tourist 2R(W/B)
Legendary Planeswalker - Pinkie
+0 Create a legendary 3/1 Pegasus creature token named "Rainbow Dash" that has flying, is all colors, and has "When this creature leaves the battlefield, proliferate."
-1 Choose 7 cards from outside the game and reveal them. an opponent chooses one at random. Exile that card. you may cast it until the end of your next turn. Put the rest of the chosen cards back outside the game.
-7 You get an emblem with, "At the beginning of each of your opponent's upkeeps, Exile your Graveyard and exile the top 3 cards of your library. At the beginning of Your upkeep, discard your hand, then put all cards you own in exile into your hand.
(3)
17:10 "tiago's chan that he submitted"
So cool but wish there was a dedicated invitational still separate from organized play.
I honestly did not know SadRobot was an invitational card, mostly because all te Solemn Simulacrums I own have different art and don't even have faces. Kind of an oops there, come to think of it.
I hope you can make up for the World Champions who never got their card and print something with their likness even if they are as reprints in a secret lair ;)
Bob and shadowmage infiltrator were my favorites.
Ok ok. You convinced me to subscribe this time.
Awesome!! Thank you for subscribing. :)
You should do a quick video about 1996 World Champion and the story behind that one.
Oooh fun idea. Thanks for this one!
Thanks, now I know why we call bob to dark confident 🎉
I srsly want to pursue Magic at the highest level now. I must become a magic card
