1:50 "[James] was the first person to win a Mystery Booster 2 draft and, as such, retired champion."
I don't know how I didn't see that bit coming. Cannot wait for new Friday Nights
He lost the 1 of 1 grand champion match against the winner of the other pod, however.
Fun fact about white borders: because the overall (barely enforced) rule about them was "First printing of the card has to be in black border", sets that are printed in some language for the first time had black borders no matter how it's printed in English. Since Ninth Edition was the first set printed in Russian, it had black borders over here, but in the Tenth Edition, they printed all languages in black border to celebrate the milestone, and then realized cards just look better that way and retired white borders altogether. And that's how Russian became one of the few languages (the only one?) to not have any white-bordered cards at all.
Foils being relatively new also had a lot to do with it.
my biggest takeaway from this is: Graham uses discord in light mode. Savage!!!
That's Slack, and I changed it to Light mode for the screenshot.
@@LRRMTG light mode is basically like white bordered magic cards
@@LRRMTG so if it's all part of a script, how much of that is actually true? Did James really won his pod 🤔
Every time I have to change Slack to light mode for screenshots, the entire process is done while in a full-body wince.
I actually like light mode for many things. I remember on my laptop Twitter defaulted to dark mode, and it just made me... tired? Like, the text was hard to focus on.
“And retired champion” talk about a callback right before the return of Friday Nights. :)
That is the brightest card I have ever seen. Dear lord, i unironically really want that, especially in foil lol.
That might be difficult, because IIRC, even in white border sets the foils were black border.
You might get them whitened though. I played against a guy who had a competitive deck (modern IIRC) with whitened borders and it was downright distressing to see.
The timeliest episode of Crack-a-Pack! And yeah that Serra is visually aggressive.
Interestingly, there has been ONE other white-bordered card in recent years: a April Fools Secret Lair printing of little Tibbers (Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded).
The pause in "It's Questing Beast straight from..." Tells me he wasn't thinking of Eldraine.
I had to remind myself it was “Throne of” not “Wild of” cause I didn’t want to just say “Eldraine” 😅
I love Ghost Town in commander decks with landfall synergies especially if you can put lands into play at instant speed like with Zimone & Dina
ghost town + burgeoning trigger + any landfall = valueeeeeeeeeee
Ya know, any bounce does the sa.e thing
@@PopoTCG No, most bounce can't bounce lands (most bounce cards say "target nonland permanent", if it even lets you target noncreatures and your own stuff) and require additional cards. Having the land be able to do it by itself while also being free is a huge advantage. Needing additional cards leaves less space for actual permanents with landfall.
The people at work stood up and applauded my synchronization with the words on Questing Beast.
jk everyone looked at me like I was crazy.
The Serra card kinda makes me want to see other planeswalkers printed with coloured borders that match their mana cost. Like a Chandra with a red border, Jace with a blue border, nissa with a green border, and then I guess Lilli with a purple-black border. Now THAT would be horrendous! Or maybe it'd be sweet? Who knows?
Silver-bordered Karn
that's what i was thinking! feels thematic, albeit a bit weird with the frame
holy that Serra is a straight up flashbang
Me, about to slap down a white border Sara at my Mystery Pod: "Think fast, chucklenuts!"
3:38 Planar Chaos, Planeshift came after Invasion
The last white border edition was 19 years ago? Thanks Graham... Hadn't felt old yet today.
Planar Chaos, not Planeshift. That specific border was also referred to as Color-Shifted, as they were (near) exact reprints of old cards. Merfolk Thaumaturgist is just Dwarven Thaumaturgist from Weatherlight, except Blue and Merfolk instead of a Red Dwarf.
Yes! I freaking LOVE mystery booster! As someone who spent a lot of time just hitting "Random" on Gatherer and Scryfall, I love the eclectic nature of Mystery Boosters.
I hope you can get some buddy cause as of right now they are secret lair or convention only
That's a reaction I only get when I forget my phone's camera is in selfie mode. 🙃
Yay Grahamcrackers!
Woo, it's the next best thing you'll never have a reasonable shot at getting.
i really hope they do a retail edition, just having access to them from my LGS the first time around was fantastic
Where are all my Shivam and Wheeler Love Magic heads pointing at the halberd and saying "Nemesis!" because they just finished up Masques block?
Meeeeeee
I hate it that this won't be sold at gamestores
That Serra is unironically the most beautiful magic card I've ever seen. I'm so excited for the white border cards, they look so clean.
I had never seen a person jumpscare themselves 😂😂😂
I have seen cats jumpscare themselves with mirrors.
Not Planeshift, but Planar Chaos, on the merfolk
Also, the frame is colourshifted and not Planeshifted. :P
Peak Graham reactions in this episode
if they started a yearly or even bi-yearly printing of the mystery booster series i would play mtg again. I am absolutely in love with the concept of the set list being so damn expansive! 1700+ card from the history of mtg. its a drafters dream, and a nostalgia hunters fix.
Passing Questing Beast for a ghastly planeswalker is definitely in the spirit of Mystery Booster drafting.
I love how the most people will never be able to crash a pack of this.
Thank you for participating in this successful test of the emergency opening system.
I am so excited for this set! I'm gonna be spending way too much money on future shifted foils 😂
I am *SO* glad they actually had the white border go all the way around on these.
The way they did it the last time they used silver borders (mostly silver, but then the part at the bottom is... still black just like a regular ol' black-bordered card?) looked absolutely horrible.
Black border looks the best of course, but if you're going to use a different border color you've got to make the *entire* border that color!
I will also note that in-spite of Graham opening the booster, it was still James' booster pack so in a way he still has "the luck of the Golden Gods" to pull two mythics in one pack :P
I always use white bordered cards when I can, because of the incidental psychic damage.
White bordered cards are great in the sideboard, helps find them quicker after the match, and to make sure you de-sideboarded before your next.
@@chazzanschutz6096 I've heard that before its pretty smart
Sorry but that printing of Serra is GORGEOUS
We used to think Questing Beast was a meme for the amount of text in it's box. Then it was eclipsed by any random uncommon from Lost Caverns of Ixalan.
If it’s a draft the pack here has to be Questing Beast, but the white bordered planeswalker or future sight grinding station would be the one to nab for collecting/investing. The Serra has the best mix of all, but Questing Beast is a limited all timer.
Beautiful white border. The planeswalkers look so good and the Kenrith is just perfection
I feel special because I actually do know questing beast by heart
It’s really not that hard. The meme is extremely tired.
Thanks for this.
I have a soft spot for Changeling Titan: _Champion_ wasn't the best protection, but at 7/7, they were one of the better ultimatums.
I played a lot of mystery booster sealed in MagicCON Amsterdam, and it's so nostalgic! It's like what masters sets should have been.
It’s just a shame I can’t buy this great product at my LGS
They had to rush so fast to make this video that Graham didn’t even have time to take off his coat.
We want a retail release
Recently bought a bunch of Unlimited basic, 20 years without white borders has me craving them in a way I never imagined.
Ghost Town is amazing in Landfall decks. Guaranteed Landfall even if you don't have any land in your hand. You just puck it up on the previous players end step and play it again on your turn.
Mystery booster 2 : Electric Boogaloo
Man, Ghost Town will win you a Commander game on another player's turn. Love that card and it's combos.
These need to be available in a retail setting.
Oooo another card for the list of "Graham has strong reaction to the art of" Sad to have missed Gencon and a chance to see James play.
All MB reprints with the planeswalker symbol are direct rips of the original cards. No alterations aside from the planeswalker stamp in the corner.
2:56 Thank you for saying frame, and not border.
edit: 7:52 I spoke too soon, shame on you. Thank you editor for correcting him.
I was also the editor, but yeah, I goofed
I love the white borders
And hot damn that grinding station was gorgeous too!!! Great pack!!
Wasn't there a white-border Tybalt in a Secret Lair? I want that Serra.
yeah, bonus card in an April Fools secret lair.
Oooh, Mystery Booster 2. You have my curiosity.
[the cold open plays]
Now you have my attention.
I'm an actual white border enjoyer and I think that Serra looks fantastic.
Wow I have always loved white border. And this looks very good to me
I do love how white borders on the modern frame make the bottom of the card go into Light Mode.
Ghost Town is a staple of landfall strategy commander decks. Very good in Titania for example
As a Serra/Angel fangirl, I am 5000% here for that blinding radiance Serra card.
New white bordered cards? Heck yeah, let's go!
Love crack a pack love yall, but screw wizards and MB2 for making it convention only.
Finally! More cards for my white border commander deck that I never really finished
honestly that big white card looks great.
I think the whiteboard on plainswalker looks cool
I'm so stoked to draft this set!!
The white bordered Serra is BEAUTIFUL. I must have one
I think questing beast is probably the better first pick, imo, but it's really close.
Just pick Questing Beast to shoot down Serra when you have to play against her, it's that easy.
Love that they revealed some Arena and MTGO only cards will be in the packs.
I greatly appreciate this emergency recording
3:45: TImeshifted Frame from Planar Chaos.
Y'know what goes GREAT with white border cards? White sleeves. I love you my Library of Leng and Teferi's Puzzlebox in white sleeves.
Oh, new futuresight frame cards? I do genuinely like that frame. I get why it doesn't get a lot of love and why the regular frame is better for conveying information, but I do like the design of that frame, so that's nice to see.
White border Serra is actually pretty gorgeous in my opinion.
I saw the Grinding Station in the Future Sight frame and my first thought was that they had thrown a Contraption from Unstable into the set.
I first thought it was the Grinding Station art applied to Whetwheel, another Millstone variant that was from Futuresight in the future-shifted border.
Ghost Town is the MVP of my Angry Omnath landfall EDH deck
Ghost Town is great in my landfall deck to always guarantee a landfall trigger
this was such a joy to watch
That Serra is *beautiful*.
I love that white border Serra. So excited to get my hands on this set.
That jacket is amazing
gavin knew what he did
Ghost Town could be good in a landfall deck or also against a land destruction deck. Other players turn, they try to destroy Ghost Town, you pay 0 and return it to your hand. Put it back in play next turn.
What a delightful surprise!
I say we call them Mystery Twosters
The last set with a white border was, indeed, 9th edition. However, the last card to have an official white border was tibakt the fiend-blooded from the April fools secret lair
So funny I knew I recognized you I walked past you this morning on my way to work
Holy moly that white bordered Serra ❤❤❤
God the festival in a box is gonna sell out in 30 seconds
Grinding station seems crazy in limited if you can build around it
I honestly never understood people's objection to white borders, the only difference to me is that they show dust faster but you're still gonna sleeve it so that's not a problem
welp James's questing beast is in near mint condition now.
6:30 friend of mine has an Uro deck with ghost town and constant mists. my go wide tokens deck was very unhappy
I'd also act like a product is way cooler than it actually was if it was given to me early for free to review
I love white border Serra actually. Like a lot.
God, I’m such a sucker for Serra, though. May have to pursue getting a copy of that white-boardered Serra 👀
Blurry Visionary is the kind of playtest card I’m deeply entranced with, because it lives in the intersection of “horribly breaks the rules” and “depending on the judge, horribly breaks the game”
Like. Imagine for a moment that I end up combining a Phage and a Delver of Secrets. I play the Delver side, and on my next turn I reveal a Brainstorm. What happens? The Delver COULD just transform into its usual backface, making this a 3-sided card. OR it could transform into Phage, because she’s the other face of the card. OR it could be rendered incapable of transforming, because it’s now an MDFC and NOT a TDFC. And in the “transforms into Phage” case, imagine instead that my other card was Brainstorm. Does the transform happen, putting an instant on the battlefield and immediately killing it due to state-based actions? Or does it fail to transform because that’s not a permanent?
All that to say nothing of the possible interactions with Daybound/Nightbound cards! It’s a delicious bit of chaos that refuses to make sense, and I love it for that
That white framed Serra looks awesome!
i may need to collect street wraith in all frames
I am going to be really forward to watching the drafts and maybe (pre)release events that LRR will do.
Congratulations James and tha k you lrr for another great video
OMG White border is back?! I love white border!
