I love how every time the video links back to the US. 'Most powerful/most advance submarine in operation...outside the US' must be said at least 10 times. It's just like in the film Team America, whenever there is a change in geographic location, it gives the name of the place, followed by how many miles away it is from the US. To be honest I don't know what else I expected when I go on a channel called 'Military TV'.

HMS Astute (first in the class) went to wargame with US Naval assets around 2015 and gave the USN a bit of an unwelcome shock with its ability to hold US submarines (mostly ageing LA 688 boats) with targetting solutions using its Thales 2076 sonar while surface and air assets couldn't find it or track it. One comment from a US Naval officer, uncredited, was that the LA boats kicked back a dolphin-sized sonar image while the Astute's image size was that of a baby dolphin.
The more modern Virginias did better than the LA-class boats but the Block V Virginias being built right now are cruise-missile land-attack subs, not pure hunter-killers like the Astutes.

Virginia class: These submarines use a nuclear reactor (S9G reactor) for propulsion, generating around 40,000 shaft horsepower, which drives a pump-jet propulsor.
Astute class: The Astute class also relies on a nuclear reactor (Rolls-Royce PWR2) for propulsion, providing approximately 43,000 shaft horsepower to a pump-jet propulsor.
The Royal Navy’s Astute class has a top speed of 30kn (56km/h; 35m/h) when fully submerged. The Virginia class is slower, reaching speeds of around 25kn (46km/h; 29m/h).
Virginia class: The Virginia class utilizes the advanced AN/BQQ-10 sonar suite, including bow, flank, and towed array sonars. It also features photonics masts with high-resolution cameras instead of traditional periscopes.
Astute class: The Astute class is equipped with the Thales 2076 sonar suite, featuring bow, flank, and towed array sonars. It also has optronic masts with high-resolution cameras.
It is understood that the Royal Navy's sesnors are far superior to that of the US. In 2012, during the joint exercise Fellowship, Astute performed simulated battles with the latest United States Navy Virginia-class submarine, USS New Mexico. Royal Navy Commander Iain Breckenridge was quoted, "Our sonar is fantastic and I have never before experienced holding a submarine at the range we were holding USS New Mexico. The Americans were utterly taken aback, blown away with what they were seeing".
The astute class are also equipped with a unique coating that absorbs sound (anechoic tiles) and a propulsion system that generates less noise to diminish their acoustic signature.
The only real advantage that Virginia has is that is carries a slightly bigger payload, making it more of a carrier type vessel than a true silent hunter-killer like the astute, which also happens to be smaller and can dive deeper.

@user-nu6bl4ru2q I am not just talking about submarine technology and you're right, we've pioneered pump jets and 'stealth technology' too, but we could not have afforded to have developed reactors with natural circulation (ie no pumps at patrol speeds) which makes a huge difference. We rely perhaps too heavily on the USN for many things other than kit, such as access to their intelligence.
But in our favour, I also think we have a different culture which is more aggressive and less constrained by orthodoxy. In the past ,US submarines were given so many equipment upgrades, they didn't have time to learn to use all the capability.
I was always confident of our ability to hold our own with any opponent and the Spearfish gave us a huge advantage when it was introduced. But we 're not spending much on missiles !

@@carryfreak5059

No party, bar the Greens, the SNP in Scotland and Plaid Cymru in Wales, is going to come out against Trident before next year's general election (though whoever wins will have to decide what would be sacrificed to pay for it).
Tuesday's report rejects Labour's traditional line that Trident should be kept as a "general insurance against an uncertain future" (to quote Tony Blair) or to maintain the UK's status, or that it is needed to preserve a valuable pool of skilled naval engineers. No, the commission's members were too clever to justify Trident on those grounds alone.
Instead, they argue this: "If there is more than a negligible chance that the possession of nuclear weapons might play a decisive future role in the defence of the United Kingdom and its allies, in preventing nuclear blackmail, or in affecting the wider security context within which the UK sits, then they should be retained".
Even if the chances of "strategic blackmail or nuclear attack" appear slim today, there is "insufficient certainty surrounding the prospect that it would be imprudent" to abandon Trident, argue the authors of the report.
Potential future threats are listed as: the re-emergence of a nuclear threat from a large nuclear arsenal (the only current example of such a possibilty is Russia, says the report); "an existing or emerging nuclear-armed threat" that "attains global reach"; and "the emergence of a future massive overwhelming threat involving bio-weapons or other comparable mass destruction technologies still unknown..."
Yet all this seems to amount to a "general insurance against an uncertain future" in all but name.
The members of the commission include professor Alison Bailes, former head of the FO's security policy department, Sir Jeremy Greenstock, UK ambassador to the UN at the time of the invasion of Iraq, Lord Guthrie, former chief of defence staff, professor Lord Hennessy, the historian, and Lord Rees, Astronomer Royal and recent president of the Royal Society, .
They say that the UK should step up efforts to promote multilateral nuclear disarmament, and consider further steps to reduce Britain's operational stockpile of nuclear warheads to below 120.
They make clear they are divided over whether or not the UK should abandon its continuous at sea deterrence (CASD as it is known) with one Trident submarines always on patrol, and whether the new Trident fleet should consist of three rather than four submarines, and over whether a decision to replace the existing fleet could be postponed.
The cost of building four new Trident submarines alone is officially estimated to be £20bn (£4bn a year in the mid 2020s). The capital cost of a new system - minus running costs and (the often forgotten) decommissioning costs - is estimated by Paul Ingram, BASIC's executive director, to total £50.6bn between 2012 and 2062.
"No-one should suffer any illusion that this capability is cheap, and that there will be few opportunity costs", says the report. "Retaining the deterrent could negatively impact on other valuable security and defence capabilities."
Unanswered questions remain, notably those surrounding the entire credibility of the deterrent. Would a British prime minister ever credibily threaten to use, ever need to use, let alone actually give the order to fire, nuclear weapons against any country.
The report even goes far as to say "there could be future circumstances in which we face a strategic threat...in which the United States would not obstruct the UK exercising its independent operation".
That is surely stretching credibility way too far.
These issues need to be aired, and MPs and prospective MPs, confronted with them.

      @@Sergecalifornia You high?! 😂
      1. 80%?
The purchase of 48 F-35B combat planes and the Trident II-D missile system we buy/use from the USA isn't 80% British weaponry that we have in are arsenal. Also guns, artillery, tanks, warships, submarines, other planes are mostly British made 'OR' are designed and used cooperation with other NATO allies.
      2. Permission?
So you saying that in the case of the F35-B that we can only use them when we get permission really?
'OR' that we can only launch are nukes just because the Trident II-D missile payload system is USA made?
*If you buy a TV from me, do you need my permission on what channels you can watch after purchase? lol
Only deal is that the shared or used technology will not be shared or sold without permission of said developer/country.*
      3. Nuclear Warheads used in the Trident II-D SLBM's are British made by The Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) in the UK. USA does have not have any military power on the launch of UK Nuclear Arms and vice versa.

Doesn't matter, its common logic ...
Why would any country buy arms from the US just to have the US have military control their use, that is retarded.
Only arms contract in place is 'Globally Standard' that the technology is not shared to a third party nation without consent, nor can they be sold to a third party without consent.
Hence why the UK does not share/sell 'advanced' weaponry to India due to the friendly relationship with Russia.
      FACT:
US holds legal rights to Nuclear Submarine Reactor development that is sold rights to the UK.
UK holds legal rights to Pump-jet Propulsion development that is sold the right to the US.
      It works both ways ...

I love my country and I love and respect my heroes armed forces. But we the UK is a joke. Don't get me wrong the armed forces will have a go. But due to government cuts we don't have enough ships, troops, weapons etc. We spend more out side of the UK then we should inside. Even then we still spending on those who shouldn't be here.
