Why the USS Zumwalt Seems To Be Such a Dangerous Ship

  • In today’s session, we will discuss why the USS Zumwalt seems to be such a dangerous ship? If you are curious on the answer, stay tuned and watch this video till the end!
With the ship's operation costs almost 7.5 billion dollars, and each missile it shoots costs more than $800,000 per round, it can be guessed that this is not ordinary ship isn’t it? indeed, it is the guided-missile destroyers currently classified as Zumwalt-Class. Each of these ships is designed to carry out stealth missions, with a focus on land strikes. The ship may also undertake anti-air warfare, surface-level combat, and naval support missions.

The advanced gun system has ammunition too expensive to use! I suspect the rail gun will also be another impractical concept for years to come. Unfortunately, with the procurement contract cut to three ships, the economies of scale won't benefit these future warfare demonstrators.

Looking back on the history of destroyers, they used to be called torpedo boat destroyers. Which is exact what their function was. Then they eventually took on rule of torpedo boats by being equipped with torpedoes. Then they became fleet screens and anti-air defense. Now destroyers are jack of all traits. With the Zumwalt class Destroyers, seeing it capabilities. I have a feeling they will be living up to their names as Destroyers. Emphasis on the word destroy.

That was decided years ago because of cost. The AGS is getting replaced with hypersonic missiles. Going from planned 32 (I think?) to 3 ships made each ship very expensive with lack of economy of scale. This destroyer is pretty darn sweet and just needs a few tweaks. The AGS guns were just stupid idea. Replace with vls or hypersonic cells, add 5” gun, laser weapons and improved spy-6 radar and you have an incredible ship.
