ALCO Street Running: If At First You Don’t Succeed, Split the Train in Half and Try Again!

- Middletown & Hummelstown Railroad's ALCO S-6 tries to take a big train up Brown Street but problems ensue. This is the largest train I've seen here to date, but it had to be doubled to the interchange. This is part two of our day out on the M&H, watch part one here:

Interesting problem. Slight incline, too much load, but creativity prevailed. I wish I lived in a small town like this. The street running would get my attention all the time, especially with a ALCO S-6.
I love seeing non-EMD, first-generation diesels still working today. Thanks for the video!
That was a nice treat seeing a Alco still in service. Not many left. Steven Sipes
What a great old switcher. Love it. My father-in-law, now long passed, drove these old Alcos for years as an engineer on the Terminal Rail Road Association in St. Louis. Thanks for a great video.
Smart move with a single engine. Alco's always great to see hard working.
Amazing video! Great images with train on street! Good work! Thumbs Up
Greetings from Dublin

Beautiful scenery❤
great train video
A fun and interesting video of something most of us don't see every day. Thanks!
Nattingham has a steep grade too for which you can see it from the miss oxford diner
Great video, and narration! Enjoy watching these old workhorses doing what they do best! BE SAFE!
nice locomotive
Outstanding video of the street running train... Great information in your commentary during the video.
Nice job on this one and thumbs up for sure !!!
Fun fact...that's me in the white van at 11:38. I was working in Harrisburg and stopped at Karns on the way home...was surprised to see the train!
Excellent video.
I enjoy seeing anything related to the Western Maryland.
Thanks for sharing!
What a great video bud thanks a bunch and see you in the next one
Great video! Looking forward to the next one!😊👍👍👍👍👍👍
Amazing video as usual
Amazing catch. I'm definitely a bit jealous.
Fantastic Video and great to see the street running!
Nice!! Great documentation on small town railroading 😀😀😀
Very nice video!
A great series. Thankyou.
I'm getting the urge to go shop at Karns...........
Awesome 😊
Great video. Enjoyed it thoroughly and inspiration on my HO Southern layout.
Looks like they definitely should've teamed their T6 up with her for the extra horses
Awesome Video !
Excellent video!!!
Nice!! You never get to see that kind of switching anymore. Also, while you were in the area, did you see anything on the Royalton branch?
Using the locomotive sandbox does help with traction on the track .
That old engine struggling but still got the job done, and the postal truck straight coasted past the stop sign didn't !!!
I mainly know the Roaring Camp’s Santa Cruz Big Trees & Pacific Railway has a street running part of the line between Felton and Santa Cruz, California.
I can only imagine the struggle the crew must've been put through to get that old hunk of Schenectady steel to pull up such an insane grade! Couple that with an old loco problem with electrics, I assume they weren't too happy with that unit that day. Makes me wonder if mechnically-driven diesel locos could ever make a comeback here in the US for smaller operations dealing with steep inclines like this.
It's a flat street.
You can't have a comeback for something that never existed.... Diesel mechanical locomotives of more than 300 HP have never been used successfully.
Awesome video
Great video
Good video I like 👍🏾
FYI: The old ALCO factory in PROVIDENCE RI was converted into a restaurant and small business Park.
Wondering what sort of stuff is in those tankers...
Fun! ❤
No one mentioned that poor conductor hustling his ass off? Steel toes, bit of stress, and it's friggen cold air going into his lungs. Not to mention the idea of a motorist hitting him. He earned his pay that day!
1:12I didn't see any smoke, but I'd have thought it'd most likely be sand being put down
Are you planning to upload some Old NS and Conrail Quality diesels for H31 and H33 or others sometime in 2023 or next year?
Did anyone else see the mail van run the stop sign?
Definitely!
maybe one day you guys/girls would do french link RR?
12 years later he is still a railfan
goodいいね👍😊
You mentioned the possibility of oil from motor vehicles, but not the fine ground rubber from their tires. That stuff can be as slippery as glass.
Who owns the loco ? Was it stolen from a museum ?
We have street rails here in downtown Olympia wa sadly they are not used.
How often do they cross 322 to go to interchange?
A little sand on the rails may help.

The DOT 1017 placard on the last tanker indicates chlorine. But you said it was empty, so no hazard I suppose. It's easy enough to look up the placard numbers, why guess what's being hauled?
It can be empty residue and still needs a placard.
How does the conductor get ahead of the train to save off cars when he's hopped on the trail end?
Is this broad gauge or metre gauge? Why are there bells on locomotives in US?
Mechanically driven?
Not reakize it was MD. Wow.
That's why ALCO Switcher doesn't have the power on slight steep grades. Prime Mover (engine) is a 90 horsepower unit, would still do the job but not enough HP. that would need assistance from a DPU ( foreign. power) especially climbing hills like this and other hills on the other videos where trains going thru back roads may travel on tracks going up hills .
What?! Lol take a look at my video of DL 1044 on a steep grade that curves into its interchange yard with no trouble with a sizeable train attached. On a shove, no slack advantage. I'd wager that that S6 needs a bit of a tune up. czcams.com/video/T0aki0_U0dA/video.html
900 ?
You mean, 900 H.P.,and this RR does not use D.P.
Is Philly to Harrisburg CSX or NS ?
Passenger or freight?
@@koenthomas7966 are there separate lines ?
Is there an Amtrak only track ?
Is the freight line separate ?
Is there both CSX and NS track from Harrisburg to Philadelphia ?
@ocsrc Philly to Harrisburg is on NS, which is the Harrisburg Line. CSX used to run on the HARL as only intermodals before they left.
And yes there are separate lines.
Amtrak has their own Harrisburg Line. NS does have a separate track for the Royalton Branch between Harrisburg & Royalton along the Keystone.
@@MSRTA_Productions I bet there is ATCS over the air for that line. If you check 897.9375 MHz and 936.9375 MHz with the squelch open you should hear a digital packet burst every 60 seconds from each control point near you.

This locomotive is crap and so are the crew. They are not using inertia to their advantage. On the contrary, they are stalling, so now the locomotive has to deal with static friction.
