We sure do. Saving countless of human lives in the process. It's cruel, but it's one the best ways we've got to conduct large scale research.

Thank you for this. All my life I've been a chronic sleep avoider, seeing it as wasted time. My loved ones will be happy to hear that you have managed to convince me that sleep really is necessary and mandatory. Cheers! 🙂
Try sleeping with a dim blue colored light it’s supposed to help u sleep longer
Hahahahahaha hhgggggi
After 6 yrs how is it going??
@@chloegao2188.... NO!!!!!!!! Blue light is the worse!!!!!!
Don't use a blue light. It is the worse.
"Sleep solidifies memory", So school should give us nap time after class
BaconCheezeBurgerz So should employer's. Bring back the naps!
That is why some teachers are so boring. They try to get you to nap during class for better results ;)
YES! Nap-time for everyone!
When I go to high school in August, I'm gonna try and see if I can make a nap club!
I know this is a joke but it would actually be really effective if we got like a 20 minute nap after class
Who else needs to go to sleep but is watching this video
Animating Wolf just commented something similar, dude xD
Animating Wolf me
Every night....
Its 5:34 PM right now in Ohio, USA
EYYY Ohio!
Every time I’ve been in the hospital, the nurses and other staff seemed determined to keep me from getting any sleep. All times of the day and night, they kept coming into the room to check my temperature, pulse, blood pressure and other things they would wake me up to do. It’s no wonder I was in such pain!
But u know they gotta do their job. Clear u n kick u out... then u can sleep
Yup. But if they didn’t do that, there’s a chance you’d be dead. Healing isn’t fun from serious conditions.
Mom told me how when she was in the hospital recovering from having my older sis, c - section. they would wake her to give her a sleeping pill...
It's better to have your sleep disturbed than letting you sleep forever..
While hospitalized, I demanded that the staff would not awaken me at night. I was hooked up to monitors. I demanded that if I was breathing and the heart was beating, do not bother. Half of them honored my request. The others thought me cranky and rude, too bad for them.
Poor mice, I feel so bad for the torture they have to go threw.
I know, it makes me sad too
Through*
Ms.Poseiden I was just gonna day that😂
I understand how important the research is but i wish they would do more to protect the animals during research programs like these. I think at the very least they should be required to pay a tax for each lab animal they use with a second tax applied to each animal crippled or killed and then that money goes towards animal welfare programs, and any animals that aren't infectious or crippled to the point they need to be put down be sent to either an adoption center or some sort of refuge (both of which be funded through that tax). Vivisection and surgery without anesthesia should have a complete ban with violators losing not just their business license but also any researchers involved lose their licenses/diplomas.
Arthas Menethil yes and then smaller companies wont do it at all and then we can all complain that big corporations run all of new medicine, when our regulation made it so. I feel remorse for the animals, I have 6 dogs, basically have had them my whole life, I understand it but we're calculating that an animal life will save a human life, and that is almost always a worthy trade or at least should be.
So that means studying all night would be contradictory to itself
Senpai better to study the day before and sleep that night. you'll do better ❤
Dear Rats,
Thank you for going through all the horrible shit so humans don't have to.
We are indeed a terrible species. Another thing to consider is how truly representative these mice studies are of humans. For example, most new drugs that appear promising in animal studies fail when they're tested in humans.
seymour engelbert why don't we just kill everyone?
So should we start with humans instead?
Yup, the thought of scientists keeping rats awake for weeks and then burning them makes me feel ill.

@@hakan7324 I don’t know if the ‘chapters’ feature was available back in 2020. I’ve only began to see ‘chapters’ regularly in the last 6 mos or so. hoping folks might find my ‘time’ comment helpful without having to ‘scroll’ through the visual chapter tiles, unwieldy on a large-screen tv.

As a fibromyalgia sufferer for the past 23 years, I c an definitely attest to sleep deprivation and how badly it affects my body. Pain is always so much worse 😞
Do you think you could do a video on cerebral aneurysms? I had one rupture at 19 and I think it would be great for people to know about them!
Hi, Yes a good subject to cover. I've had two TIA's (mini-strokes) in the last couple of years and those could've been prevented if I had known more about the early indicators. The more we know! Thanks.

Vibe Sensational NASA parties are a blast, they have the biggest fireworks!
Master Therion Knapping some sleep into existence
I was in a terrorist organization looking to weaponize insomnia. we never made any progress, being a sleeper cell.
My theory is that sleeping evolved as a way the body can conserve more energy during the time when it was harder to see and do things. It eventually started using extra some of that extra energy to do stuff like healing. Eventually animals started needing sleep so much they couldn't live without it.
That actually sounds like a really good theory.
@@virglibrsaglove Thank you
Now come up with a way to test this theory!
@@trangium ah beans
Almost all animals sleep, for example the hydra which is 1cm in size also sleeps.
Now our common ancestor is more than 500 million years ago with this animal and have common genetic protein processes; the idea that sleep is to conserve energy is perfectly reasonable but looking at the extremeties of life that share similar biological sleep adaptations I would have to say that, that hypothesis is not fully developed/encompassing to explain a predictive biological model of sleep in different animals to test out the idea across the panoply of examples in nature. A predictive model that can show results across a multivariate amount of examples would give if not a conclusive understanding but a better perspective on the way sleep function encompasses Terran life.
I noticed a lot of examples of the ill effects of sleep deprivation, but what about oversleeping? I know most doctors will get concerned or at least look at you weird if you regularly get 11 or 12 hours of sleep a night, but I wonder exactly what the effects of too much sleep on the body are
I'm curious too. I could EASILY sleep 10-12 a night if allowed.
Do you also fall asleep quickly, dream vividly nightly and are hard to wake up?
Scrb from my experience fatigue which makes you want to sleep more, and if you end up sleeping more because you’re fatigued, when you wake up, you’re fatigued which makes you want to sleep even more… just a very awful vicious cycle.
Scrb I sleep 9-10 hours at night and nap for 1-2 hours in the afternoon. Perfectly healthy and do amazing at information consolidation (A’s in tests with fewer than average study hours). Probably genetics since I have been sleeping a lot since birth and my mom also sleeps more than the average person.
Blah Smith I sleep 9-10 hours aswell. If I sleep less, then I can not concentrate or have my full power to do things. I guess it depends.

as a teenager i had a really bad autoimmune disease that almost killed me. i also had really extreme insomnia, like getting less than an hour of sleep at night was normal for me. i had no idea that those two things were connected. maybe my insomnia actually caused my autoimmune disease. Wow!
Please sleep okay? :)
I pray for you my friend
Aww I hope u r doing ok❣️❣️ try sleeping with a rlly dim blue light it’s supposed to help u sleep longer ❣️❣️I hope it works!!
You say this is how you used to be. How did you cure it? If you don't mind my asking. I am very similar to that. I can't lead a normal life because of it.
@@virglibrsagloveif you're still struggling with this and have access to medical help, maybe talk to your doctor about meds that can help with sleep? i know a lot of people are hesitant about them (i was too) but ever since starting hydroxyzine i'm actually able to fall asleep. i still have a hard time getting the right amount of sleep but at least i'm not lying in bed for hours trying to fall asleep anymore
I'd be really interested to see a video about sleep disorders, like delayed sleep cycles. There's been studies recently that show that delayed sleep cycles might have been an evolutionary advantage, because it meant that there was always someone awake.
Or REM sleep behavioral disorder and Hypnagogic hallucinations. Thought I was going crazy until I went over my CNP Sleep Doc and went with a Neurologist specializing in Sleep Disorders. Thanks to my hunch I’m not crazy, but me and the shadow figure that sits in my bed staring at me between me and my husband, will always be a third wheel 🤪

Not needing to sleep would be amazing! But you know what bodily function I could reeeally do without? *Bowel Movements*. It just takes up sooo much of my time! I take 2-3 shits a day, which is very healthy sure, but it's so time consuming and messy. If there were a way to never shit again(but still be perfectly healthy) I'd jump on that in a second.
Nanites.
2-3 a day? wew. Once every few days, here.
Hi John-Michael, WoW! 2-3 per day! You're my Hero! I have to struggle to go twice a week and that's with laxatives. I've considered just drinking protein drinks to make things easier but my doctors don't like that idea.
As they say "The Grass is Always Greener":) Thanks.
Michael Pesavento Have you tried metamucil and/or a yoghurt like Activia?
For those of u that struggle to go for days at a time, my g.f. had the same issue. Sometimes laxatives help, sometimes not. Sometimes we think they aren't working, then one day she just can't leave the bathroom for more than a few minutes. Lately something that has helped her be a little more regular is *Chia Seeds*. Idk how, or if at all, but she seems to think there's a change.
Discovery about sleep: I should be doing it now.
Why did you put a blue background when you know 90% of viewers will be watching this in the middle of the night?
Smollync CZcams ???
Smollync CZcams Ik im late but you’re basically saying “put a green background so we wont get any blue light”
1:34am for me... I think I'll go fall asleep now. Nighty night
Yeah, tech experts, why blue light?
It's not blue. It's greenish.
at 4:20 that guy looks baked.
You are everywhere.
Didn't expect you here haha
Medicine🤓
It's possibly due to the photograph technique at the time. Very early photographs were sketched, by hand, onto a photosensitive plate, and then later improved similar to a painting. So, you'd still have to stand perfectly still for up to a few minutes while the "photographer" did a quick sketch. There are clues in the photo at 4:20 that lend to this. Notice how his shirt collar and tie seem impossibly smooth.
It's easier to hold a pose on the face when it's completely relaxed. One way people managed this was to pull the type of face you've highlighted.
Also, if those people had been alive since before photographs became prevalent, they would have already learnt this relaxed face method when posing for paintings. There would have been an association between posing for a painting and posing for a photograph.
There would also have been a culture around how you're supposed to look when posing for your picture (whether a painting or new tech). People not used to having their picture taken would have deferred to the cultural norm (encouraged by the painter/photographer in a similar way we're asked to "say cheese").
That's a bit of a stretch. That's just how his eyelids normally looks. I'm not saying your facts are wrong (considering old illustrations generally have the same pose), but the OP is just talking about how is eyelids makes this guy look stoned. LOL it's amazing how much cognitive bias(illusory correlation) was formed for that explanation though.
I go to sleep at 6 am and wake up at 3 pm every day. That's probably unhealthy especially since most of the time I'm up during the night, it's spent playing video games or watching CZcams videos. Oh well. I wasn't planning on living that long anyways.
Some people have a junked up circadian rhythm.
Angelina Black I don't think being awake partially at night and day is unhealthy as long as you sleep enough. I work night shift, so I wake up at 12pm every day and don't fall asleep until 3am. I feel fine for the most part. Definitely far more healthy than when I was in college sleeping 2-3 hours between morning and night classes.
I don't plan on living long either.
+Joshy - While that's partially true, it is worth mentioning that sleeping from 05:00 to 14:00 may not necessarily be that far off +Angelina Black's inbuilt circadian rhythm anyway. I personally find that when I don't set any alarm clocks and just let my body dictate when I sleep, I am in bed from 3:00 to 11:00, so sleeping from 05:00 to 14:00 would be less of a disruption of my sleep pattern than sleeping from 23:00 to 07:00, or whatever passes for "normal" sleep times.
Angelina Black - Sounds perfect. What do you do for a job!? I want that job!
How can I sleep if the ground keeps on breaking?

TFW you watched 10.5 as a child and now have a chronic fear of sinkholes and toxic gas coming out of the ground...
you guus have great writers, everything soundes so entwined and continuous. Love what you do!
Can you make a video about Lucid Dreaming?
literally staying up to watch this
I feel like I'm not the only one who's watching this instead of sleeping.. 🤔
Hank hank hank, those hands are MOVING today lol
Thanks for making these phenomenal videos. I've read an article or two suggesting that in past eras (Medieval, etc) humans had "two sleeps:" they went to sleep with the sun, woke in the middle of the night and went about their business, and then slept again until sunrise. Could you research this and make a video?
I'm listening to this right before sleep ... goodnight everyone... 😴
How many rats had to die of sleep deprivation to know we need to sleep?
Yas Mahn How else where we to find out? I despise animal testing in cosmetics and what not but I think it's necessary in medicine. Animals have done so much for science and humans, and with technology advancing as far as it is we probably won't need them anymore
I know it was just a joke! Everytime he mentionned a fact in the video it was followed by rats died after weeks of sleep deprivation lol
+Hannah Lawrencium
Considering the literal shit and heavy metals they used to use in cosmetics, and the things that are in them now (that you wouldn't think are safe), I'm quite sure that animal testing in the cosmetic industry is necessary.
Still don't understand why people use them all the time, though.
Yas Mahn not nearly enough.
We should poke some more to see if repeated poking of the eyes leads to blindness.
Yas Mahn who cares thier like chickens and rabbits they breed like crazy. if your not careful they will over run a whole town in a short time. that's why they are used in controlled experiments and their DNA is somehow similar to ours
I have a feeling that Foam and memory foam beds are causing a lot of sleep problems, rather than some type of spring system lifting us up. I think that the compression, and not being able to move around at night make our bodies less able to work properly.
could you do a video on whether sleeping early - wake up early is more beneficial compared to sleeping late - wake up late? assuming you get enough sleep in both case
"Scientists don't understand WHY we need sleep..."
*then explains how sleep deprivation destroys internal organs and kills us*
This channel often gets things wrong, and also misleads. I don't trust anything they spew.
@@harley-cq6de Which videos are misleading? The reason we don't really know why we need to sleep isn't because we don't know sleep isn't important. However, it is because of how we evolved into needing sleep. If that has been answered already then it is just misinformation in a single video not really anything to worry about.
I have seen some articles having theories of why we had evolved to start sleeping but it hasn't been close to being solved yet.
@@harley-cq6de Yes, but WHY does the lack of sleep cause health problems?
But like, why does sleep do that to us? It’s just closing your eyes and slowing your brain for a bit. Why does not doing lead to such dramatic things?
After all this i have realized, humans are bullies to rats. :(
Why we can't remember our dreams after waking up ?
@philos4r i hate your pfp
Why do you get tired after sleeping too much?
Klmp13 Is it possible you're dehydrated? Before having a kid, I could sleep 10 hours through, no problem. I could even take smaller "naps" after that time, up to 11-12 hours. The only times I felt shifty afterwards, a big glass of water fixed it.
Sleep inertia
you have to wake up at a right moment
Upsetting your regular sleep cycles can cause daytime fatigue. This can be avoided by sleeping in a consistent routine.

Poor mickey mouse!
Hank: Sleep!
Me: I'm trying!
I am an insomniac and today is my birthday. Watching this video before going to bed wraps up my day. Thank you, SciShow!!
This is one of the videos I was watching while procrastinating going to sleep.
All deprevation of sleep causes hallucinations, found out my self when I've slept only six hours in five days.
Do a Tesla mini-series covering all his inventions and discoveries.
this post will be posted on all future videos until we get the mini-series.
The brain is such an amazing miracle! Movement, processing visuals, words, and memories. It's amazing!
Interesting. Sleep has always facinated me. Number 8, the one about cleaning the brain, I have always called that "rebooting". I call it rebooting because like a computer issue that's solved by rebooting the system sleep does the same thing for me. It doesn't need to be a full nights sleep (although that's the best), a nap will work too. If I'm in a bad mood, really emotional or feeling really negative I can take a nap and wake up "rebooted". It works most of the time.
I need to go to sleep but I can't leave my god damn phone! I hope this video gonna help.
Edit: First fact- not sleeping can kill you, okay I'm good now bye. I'm going to end the video tomorrow.
I'm watching this as I'm about to go to sleep lol
Thank God for this channel wherein the references are mostly published journals and not some random internet websites
Hank, you're a legend, keep making those videos because you & Micheal are great presenters.

Is it bad I was about to comment about the spelling error and your choice of job? The answer is probably yes, especially since i just did
rcwhite18
To answer the comments that were deleted, if was just me being a smarmy prick about a misspelling and acting as if that were somehow a measure of one' intelligence, when in fact that would imply that I, being the one who was desperate enough to point that out, was in fact the one lacking intelligence, and perhaps either taking it out on another individual, or maybe I'm somehow just more insane than even I previously thought, as this post is growing in overwordedness every second
My apologies for deleting my comment replies. The CZcams comment format has changed since the last time I have commented and for some reason they were showing up before your comment and it didn't make sense.

Watching videos helps me fall asleep it doesn’t prevent me from falling asleep
I have seen studies indicating that in times past, at least in the West, it was normal to go to bed soon after sundown but then wake up around midnight and "hang out" for an hour or so and then return to bed and sleep until dawn. It is possible that six hours of sleep with a "half time" is better than eight hours of solid sleep. I cannot control it, but when this happens to me, those next days tend to be more productive.
Bottom line, if you find yourself wide awake at 2a, get up and go and do something. Sleepiness will return and you will return to your bed. In the meantime, you got something done and you didn't waste the time staring at the ceiling or watching the clock.
Works for me.
You didn't teach me anything new, but you presented it very well and very clearly! Great job!
just found this out. if you are on your phone you can double tap the video on the left side to make the video go back 10 seconds and tap the right to go forward 10 seconds.
MrWowh found that out about a week ago
I was so surprised, and I found it out by accident
outsight same here lol. you can tap more than 2 times as well to go like 20 30 40. it's gonna help me a lot when I watch a movie or something.
Whooow, thanks!!
You can adjust it in the settings to be 5secs, 20secs, or even 1 or 2mins. I chose 5secs as 10secs is too long for me.
Another thing, if you tap the video as if you're going to pause it those forward and back arrows will take you to the previous or next video. If you didn't push the arrow to go back a video and click the forward one it will take you to the next video in the autoplay section
Wow thanks so much for teaching me this. I just tried it with my phone and it actually worked

About sleep solidifying memory, has anyone else who plays an instrument had this happen? When you are learning some new notes or learning something unfamiliar and it feels unnatural and there's zero muscle memory, you spend ages at it, but then you have a good sleep and try again the next day and while you're by no means perfect, it feels NO WHERE NEAR as unnatural or unfamiliar as the day before.
This has happened to me so many times, like playing the flute or piano, or cello - but especially the flute for me because of all the weird combinations you press just to produce one note. It feels like my muscle memory drastically improves overnight after sleeping and it's not this whole big conscious mental exercise so much as the day before. And it's SO noticeable to me.

We sleep so that we can discover our dreams fam
But what if our dreams are reality. Reality being this ever changing and warping existence and that our "real life" is actually a dream forcing the illusion of a stable reality to keep us from going insane.....

This is just affirming that I need to fix my sleeping habits.
I had to reschedule a back tattoo I had going once, because I didn't get any sleep the night before. It was ten times more painful than usual. After an hour, I just couldn't take it anymore. I was shocked how much of a difference that made.

It does when you regularly don't get enough sleep. Growth hormone gets released primarily when you are sleeping.
Most of your growth happens when you sleep
I did that (3-6hrs) when I was 13 and 14 and I ended up having a poor memory (e.g. once my friend told me that she went to the city I was born only 2 years ago and I guided her.... i couldn't remember that at all) as well as thinking speed (doing questions, reaction speed, speech, etc.) .... so.... unless you don't want to live long, I don't suggest you do that
"We still don't know why we sleep" proceeds to give pretty darn critical roles sleep has for the body. We already know why, it's important!
1:43 - "Studies done on rats in the 1980s confirmed that sleep deprivation on it's own is fatal."
Professor: "So what field do you want to do research in? Climate change? Medicine?"
Scientist: "I want to see if we can kill rats through sleep deprivation".
Professor: "Dude... is everything ok at home?"
So, why do I start to "hear" loud music when I'm really tied?
My ears feel plugged when I’m really tired so I can’t hear what’s actually happening but I sometimes think I hear music or voices that are pitched too low to understand
When you're really tied? You sleep tied like with your hands tied behind your back, haha just kidding fred
i feel like that was a lot more questions than answers god damnit lol
When I get into high school, I'm going try to make a nap club! And if they don't let me I'm gonna show them this video!
I really had no idea that fibromyalgia was worsened by lack of sleep. It really does correspond to my pain levels when I cannot sleep and I cannot do much the next day due to pain and fuzzy brain and lack of motivation. This pain builds up if I do exercise during a bad a day and then keeps me awake the next night because I cannot find a comfortable position. So...if I can somehow sleep then I can feel better and break the cycle! Thanks for the info! I am going to have to stop looking at my phone in bed and just listen to audible or white noise and maybe magazines, catalogues or crossword puzzles, even though that means I leave a light while I am fall asleep. Ok, giving this a try. Amazing!
Hello fellow no lifers
Im A Pug hello buddy
I need a girlfriend :,(
Swendeezy you sound so bored
And procrastinators!
hello fella
Yeah everybody knows that sleep helps you heal so if you need that heal up make sure you get plenty of sleep damn it
1. Not sleeping will kill you
-Damage to thalamus, organs dont get rest
2. Sleep solidifies memory
-Declarative memories in hippocampus, non-rem sleep
3. Active brain during sleep
-EEG-Delta waves
4. Sleep and wake signals
-Brain stem- center of arousal system
5.Pain is worse when sleep deprived
-No rem sleep=sensitive to pain, muscle soreness=insomnia, Sleep and lain systems linked
6. Sleep deprivation deprives healing
-Inflammation, autoimmune disorders
7. Blue light is bad for sleep
-hurts melatonin, circadian rhythm, electronics = no bueno
8. Sleep cleans your brain
-Astrocytes,CSF, Chemical balance, clear out amyloid beta, prevent alsheimers
9. Early human sleep habits
-Ancestors had worse sleep than us
Well, now some of my sleep problems make sense. Sleep studies suck, but are so worth it to find out why you don’t sleep or feel exhausted all day, or have lots of pain and inflammation.
I've just watched this video and now I'm going to sleep. Screw you, Blue Light!
Lmao, when I first clicked on this video, I thought it said "9 Groundbreaking Discoveries About SHEEP" Counting sheep lol?
Good video. Thanks for presenting sleep facts, especially that piece from 2013 about the brain cell distances expanding by 60% and more CSF flowing in the brain, which was new to me (I gave up trying to pursue medical solutions to my chronic sleep issues, and therefore stopped doing much reading about the subject).
Some notes about #3: “[the brain is] Active During Sleep”:
Yes, the brain is active during sleep, especially stage one (the ‘light nap’, just fell asleep/just waking up sleep stage) and stage two (REM/dream sleep), but there are also sleep periods with much lower amounts of activity. This is when you get literal brain rest. This is sleep stage 3 (merged from stages 3 & 4 in the old model). It is a non-REM period. It is also referred to as delta sleep, delta-wave sleep (what your brain activity looks like on an EEG; I’ve slow-wave), or just plain “deep sleep”. This is the stage that it sucks the most to be woken during... and the stage that it sucks the most to not get enough of.
Deep sleep/delta-wave sleep is the part of sleep that is most important when talking about “quality of sleep”. Talking about number of hours is much less meaningful than talking about sleep quality. If you sleep for 7 hours and have lots of dreams, but NO deep sleep, your brain has not actually rested. A lack of deep sleep is closely correlated to disorders like chronic fatigue and narcolepsy.
If you’ve seen commercials for numerous “sleep aids”, you may have been presented with FALSE information about sleep and the REM stage of sleep. One commercial actually declared that REM was the most restful stage of sleep. This is absolutely FALSE! NEVER trust the “facts” provided by a commercial! As a side note, almost no sleep aid can assist in acquiring delta sleep. In fact, most sleep aids (and many other chemicals we ingest for various reasons, over the counter and prescription) are harmful to the acquisition and maintenance of deep sleep; this includes every antidepressant and most other psychiatric drugs. The worse your sleep quality, the more mood problems you will have. This is one of many reasons that long-term usage of antidepressant drugs is more likley to be problematic than short-term usage. The only compounds known to have some positive, if limited, impact on deep sleep are GABAs and sodium oxybate (the sodium salt of GHB), with both having considerable adverse effects of their own and being heavily regulated.
I have a neurological movement disorder which causes painful muscle spasms and if i don't sleep i am physically unable to get out of bed for the next few days, i am in so much pain on a daily basis and one bad night of sleep can ruin my entire week. i am on quite a cocktail of medication and most of them have a sedative component to them which makes me almost constantly exhausted but fortunately makes falling asleep relatively easy, although i do go through phases of insomnia due to my pain but i have sleeping pills i can take when that happens.
When is the new scishow channel coming out?
