Growing up in Sri Lanka, these are what got me to school and back. Even to this day, Sri Lankans still buy these types of Vans due to how affordable, reliable and well equipped it is
👌👏 always wondered why this was popular as the Dolphin
Same in Jamaica. These are pretty much the go to vehicle for busses on the island.
Water fights
Jamaica also
Yes, these are common school vans in Malaysia too. but its usually lower trim level Hiace with diesel engines, no fancy features such as this
I hope that "RCR hierarchy of needs" gets adopted because that's 100% true!
mike it a system to evaluate the car they reviewed
Mr. Regular just solved the age old question of "what car should I buy?"
And no, Miata isnt always the answer

As a Japanese kid born in early 90s these vans reminds me of the memories of ski trip and fairground.
I'm a European kid born in the 90s, but when I became an adult, I moved to Japan and bought a Hiace as my first car. I converted it to an RV so that I can live in it. Best car ever.
I was stationed in Japan in the 90’s. Owned an early 90’s manual Delica AWD van. Had a blast driving it all over. Great times camping and running with the crew to Roppongi, Mt Fuji, Nagano, and every other touristy site. Grate play on Maslow’s hierarchy. Thanks for featuring the van. It brought back awesome memories. These vans, although +25 years old still look so cool. 👍
that sounds awesome and I wish I was born 20 years earlier...
@@echodelta2172 they still make these, and the military is still stationing people in Japan. I almost lived this man’s exact experience just 3 three years ago, and I have to say the new Hiaces are just as cool as these old ones
Forget JDM sports cars, embrace VAN. Happy Monday y'all.
Reject VSU, return to VEN.
JDM kei cars and some subcompact MPVs like Toyota bB
if some dude rolled up in this thing to an illegal street race meetup, i'd honestly forget about the R34 revving on the launch line.
@@oldfrend previa tho...
@@joshuahoggard583 it's a piece of shit from my childhood that i'd prefer not to relive. what about it?
I remember being part of a tourist group that ran the length of Kashmir upto the highest point where a vehicle could go. We were in a HiAce with a high roof trim and let me tell you, when we reached the highest point the people there came to see this van and were astonished at this city comuter box reaching a point where military land rovers defenders would struggle.
One of my fondest memories.
they use the base model of these in Jamaica as taxis and they are doing 500k miles easily.
I read that as terrorist grouping not tourist 😭😭😂😂

Mr. Regular’s constant flirting with teaching us literature and philosophy by wrapping it in the disguise of reviewing cars is one of my favorite things about being a millennial.
Trying to utilize degrees the authority figures in your life pushed you to get?
The PT Cruiser review remains one of my go-to examples for modernism/postmodernism, lol
@@JohnSmith-wx9wj learning from someone that’s studied in an area different than I am. Peer To Peer education. Like the Napster of undergrad studies, and there’s few things more millennial than that.

Ah yes, the Toyota Hiace.
I've worked off one, I've taken one to school and work, I've gone to countless vacations on one, and I brought grandpa to the morgue on one. It's as utilitarian as it is ubiquitous, and it plays host to so many varied life experiences and memories for me. I love this airy tube of happiness in all its incarnations.
I used to work at an outpatient hospital and we sometimes used our ambulance to carry supplies from place to place.
The mortuary van just also happened to be a Hiace, as are a lot of other utility vehicles here.
@@00Revell Well you ruined it with that explanation. lol. I was envisioning that you did all those things with the same one. That would be kind of cool to have the same one with all that history
Making monday sting less: It's Mr.Regular.
So god damned true!!!! Mr Regular, you’re the patron Saint of making Monday suck a little bit less.
100%!!!
Amen, sir(s).
Big fuckin facts here
Fun fact the 100 series hiace came with the 1UZ V8 when configured as an ambulance in Japan
That is a lot of torque for a van.. Although I imagine the Ambulance conversions would have added a lot of weight in equipment to them.
Whoa, I would have expected the diesel

Oof actually believeing a claim by a car maker
Enjoyed the Seamen sign, brought back memories of Sega Dreamcast. Everything 90's JDM is absolute perfection.
The first time I watch RCR I was like "what in the hell kind of car review is this?" Now I don't miss an episode. Fantastic stuff.
Ya know, Good for Ben. Its hard to find "the right car" that would fit all those categories that you actually want to *care* about and take care of so it will last. Most just use cars until they fall apart or get bored of them and move on to the next.... like automakers WANT people to do.
Reminds me of every away school rugby trip in New Zealand. "Cuzzy, can we stop for pies and a V in Kaitarawa petrol station?" 😅
LMFAOOOOO exact same vibe here in the shittier new Zealand
Ay NZ gang. Remember being in the back of my mates dad’s super custom
The "RCR Pyramid of Automotive Needs" is a brilliant conceptualization, ripe for general adoption!
Almost like the "Swanson Pyramid of Greatness"
"Your ex and her new boyfriends NPC face." Too perfectly savage!
"Hey kid, where were you born?"
"In my parent's Toyota HiAce Super Custom"
That 'Calvinball' reference was glorious, shot me back to being 12 yrs old and reading the comics for the first time.
"Sooner or later, all our games turn into Calvinball."
Don't you know those window rain deflectors are just so you can smoke in the rain. You open the window about 2-3 inches and it will suck all the smoke right out of the car all while keeping your ciggy dry!
That’s why they are a red flag when buying a used car.
True.
I don't smoke and I love them. If your AC is broken or it's raining and you need to drive at highway speeds they're great. Or park you truck on a hot summer day and leave the windows cracked and it's only like 100 degrees inside when other people's cars are like 120 degrees
I roll down my windows a bit when parking and the deflectors help cover the gap you passerbys can't really see the gap unless they looke closely
@@ExperiencesAndEquipment Or when you own a Honda and you have to dedicate half of your engine's output to running the aircon to keep the fog out
It's a nice alternative just cracking the window
Nice HiAce I use to always see. I bought a 1995 HiAce Southern Sports model I had never seen living in Japan for over 25 years. ETD around X-mas which has a high ceiling and stretched model. Has stove, fridge, sink, cross vented windows, ceiling fan and can sleep 4 plus. Perfect for here in Oahu 🌈
That heierarchy is so spot on with my car. It’s a Subaru Legacy/ Liberty Spec B wagon with a manual, first 6 months into owning it a piston cracked and it was over, but I stood by it and rebuilt it with forged internals and all sorts of other go fast bits. Now I own a car which doesn’t impress others but when driven impresses me so much, sure it drinks a lot and lacks a lot of modern conveniences but to me this car is so good that I legitimately don’t know what could possibly replace it as it’s simply just such a great car to me
I love Legacy wagons. Especially spec B’s
I have a JDM, manual BH5 legacy wagon. I’ve had it 2 years now and I can’t imagine ever replacing it. It’s everything I want and need in a car.
As you said, it doesn’t stand out or impress strangers.. but it makes me smile every time I drive it.
@@Treenote they’re such a great car! I know one day it will have to be replaced but what can possibly replace it that’s a million dollar question
The Calvinball reference hit me right in the nostalgia balls.

I can’t wait until they get a Mazda Bongo on here… Then they will have the Japanese Van Holy Trinity.
Needs the Nissan homy as well
Oh no, you don't want one of these - they are old enough, but they were so badly bulit the older ones do not exist. I had one for 8 months, broke down (as in need tools and time to move again) 23 times, only dealer bought car I ever owned, sold it back at a £1000 loss having put £1000 into it keep it running. Makes a Delica feel like a sportscar
@@idrisddraig2 that’s interesting… they’re the van of choice for backpackers here in Australia, and I’ve owned an ‘85 for years with nothing more than routine maintenance. Can’t speak for later years or the Euro spec Friendee as we never got those.
The Holy Trinity for those stuck in the 90s. Japan and the countries who don't have a 15 or 25 year import rule have moved on.
@@HazeyAuto Not the same van, its the Bongo Friendee that was nasty, built in a van shape on car components - ok in 60/80kph (speed limits at the time) Japan not fit anywhere else. The cargo van we got as Izuzu and was crude but effective

This is... this... this is the Best RCR review I think I've ever seen. It's a thing of beauty. Only Mr. Regular can reference Calvin & Hobbes, Battlestar Galactica, AND Maslow's hierarchy of needs and make it all work, within a review of a JDM imported car.
ever since seeing these in initial D and in other countries I've ALWAYS wanted a hiace. nice review as always
90s Hiace Vans was at some point a status symbol in the Philippines 😂✋

Man you beat me to it! Race motorcycles? You want one of these.
Same across the Ditch. My aunt had a Hiace for her mowing business with wheels from an XR6 Falcon. The AU model.
The 90s keeps giving...I feel blessed. Thanks RCR
I remember this van! My uncle gave me his last summer. It was really useful to go grab parts for my Datsun 100A
Love the "RCR hierarchy of needs" - I will definitely adopt it additionally to the "Age - Interesstingness - curve" to tell me if I really like that car.
It also made me realize that I am lucky enough to score all five levels of need on my first car, which I didn't really consider when buying it and after four years I'd definitely do anything to keep it good shape.
We'll probably have to do revisions to the hierarchy over time, like a textbook you get assigned for a 300 level course that's the same as the 100 level course but somehow still $250. Except our revisions will be free, because I can't imagine anyone paying for an RCR University Course Book. Most people would scan the pages about bowel movements and the enduring relevance of automotive weeb culture and share them around. And everyone would pass.

As a brass player back in school, I feel the phantom back pains at the rant.
For the nearly decade that I have lived here in Japan, Hi-Aces are mostly used by construction workers and maybe those that take snowboarding/skiing very seriously - or both.
When I worked in construction in this country at one point in time, nearly every single van that came to a construction site was a Hi-Ace with a sparse smattering of Chamonix Delicas and then the rare "Highway STAR" minvans for those that wanted style over functionality - and these were the guys and girls that had custom designer construction worker wear.
The RCR hierarchy of needs helped to centralize a lot of different thoughts I’ve had about people’s thought processes behind owning the cars they do. It’s something that I’ve thought a lot about recently and the way RCR put it makes a lot of sense.
Saw a lifted one of these with a totally 70s looking paint job just a few days ago! Crazy you make the vid now, very cool! Haha
RCR mondays:
Come for the unusual cars
Stay for the psychoanalysis and existential dread.
Asian viewers are feeling an unprecedented amount of nostalgia and PTSD watching this video.
I’m not sober enough for your Philosophy lesson today. Cool van makes me nostalgic for my moms van in the 90ies.
An extremely well thought out automotive hierarchy of needs. Well done.
Hiaces used to be pretty common in Norway too, and a lot didn't get scrapped either. they were just deregistered, and then ended up in Africa eventually.
I love how these website intros are getting increasingly more and more reminiscent of a CZcams Poop.
My grandfather used to have the same gen Hiace, but it was dark blue with 4x4 and diesel. Reliable, practical, simple and comfortable.
I love this thing, my friends mom had one, we rode home from middle school in it and when we were in tenth grade we started hauling band equipment in it.
I remember driving my Mitsubishi Express work van and being super jealous of the fancy Toyota rear mirror. How awesome was that in the 90’s?
the Dangos on the rearview mirror are a cute touch.
Oh yeah, what a throwback! This one's a favorite commuter vehicle of Asia, especially this generation; whether it be for school or work. I remember hopping into these to get around the campuses back in high school, fun times.
I love my current car but still kept shopping the market, convinced there was something better for me. Never knew why until now, when I realized I have a step 4 car. Love the hierarchy, and thank you for breaking it down so effectively.

Same.
What's wrong with that? Trains are cool.
@@thestarlightalchemist7333 trains are hella cool. the job is pain though. think corporate bullshit on a whole different level. the industry has succumb to statistics rather than hauling freight which is dumb. Not how a railroad is supposed to function.
Yeah… sounds exactly like the aviation industry. Or any large industry whatsoever.
The sooner you realize that it’s just a job, and get your head out of the corporate politics, the better your life will be.
Heck, I won’t join the airlines because of it. I work for a small company where management leaves us alone to do what we want. Pay is lower, but piece of mind is so so much better.
I heard rumours of one large railroad here who pays cab companies to report on employees who are using their smartphones on company time-even for the ride to the hotel.
Meanwhile… I save up all of my banking and paperwork and taxes and even bring personal projects in and run personal errands on company time. As long as I’m available without delay, I’m doing my job.
The dividends it pays in mental health and lifestyle are immeasurable.
