For those who would rather get a text description: Input dry goes out to your regular L/R channels Bus/copy the input to a highly, extremely compressed (low threshold, high ratio) compressor. Set the compressed channel's volume to 0 and slowly raise its level up, mixed against the dry signal, so the wall of sound compression serves as a raised noise floor for the whole drum mix. This will preserve the peaks of the dry signal, and introduce a raised valley of the quieter details you wouldn't normally hear. So it 'limits the dynamic range' by raising the floor without compromising the original signal.
+slytown Stage mics, probably about 6 just for the drums. 4 vocal mics on stage. the multiple guitars. producer mics probably about 5. and multiple back ups, and guitar techs. Just a guess.
+Shane Battersby I'd say they're closer to 16 mics on drums. Then you'd be looking at 2-4ch of bass, 2ch for each guitar amp/cab, 2ch for each keyboard, 3ch for Hammond+Leslie, 1ch for each vocal mic. I guess the small console in the back (Venice) is for submixing FX returns.
The dips in the mids and highs can have to do with guitar levels or vocal brilliance. The dip in the very low end carves out the typical dead flat EQ at around I dunno 80Hz? And you can see he raised up the left-most, bassy (40hz?) tip to accentuate that very low-end which crowds can feel when speakers are large enough to propagate those frequencies... like at a venue or with a PA system. I do the same stuff, attenuate the critical band (1000hz area) for the human voice so I can hear my own voice in my head and the low-end thing is to remove the immediate smack of a bassdrum, lifted up by say 40hz, to give it a more rounded resonant thump. For Windows, you can use EqualizerAPO for system-wide EQ'ing (netflix, gaming, etc.) It also makes headphones sound like a club or venue.
Id have an XL4 on my wall as art if I could sell my Wife to finance it and pay for the wall strengthening needed too! Was looking to buy an XL8 as they are now obsolete too, I got 3 kids,... do a 3 for 1 deal if anyone's Keen ??
@@camtheham13 That's mad I blame the enablers like this Engineer. Jack white needs to pull his head out of his arse along with the myriad of people who claim he's a 'genius'
Tone Ranger hes being paid very well in all likelihood to do so, and considering brad maddix's resume, I doubt he would have stuck with the gig if there was not an upside, I'm not sure I'd want to be given those requirements either but ultimately employers are within reason to ask a dress code be followed, and if the engineer does not like it, they can turn down the gig, ultimately it's a conversation between the artist and the engineer, amd if both are happy, all the power to them
That dude refuses to upgrade his stuff. He's using a tablet PC for EQ just like he did in the Rush video. What was that, like 15 years ago? It's not 1985 anymore man.
AND he's able to choose his desk. How often there's stupid no money and truckspace for analog. Have you seen, that with digital boards the FOH-spaces didn't decreased?! Now light and video get more space for their desks. Oh, and digital boards in the sun..? It's more than annoying
Best dressed sound engineer I've ever seen.
Anthony Bowe a requirement of jack white haha
yeah that's a requirement by Jack White. His roadies are dressed the same.
It's good to see Robert California now doing what he truly loves...
Awesome, Brad's the man. Folks, I have tried the parallel compression on drums and vocals. It works wonders.
I see Jack stole RUSH's sound guys. :D
Love your "White Stripes" band!
Just blew my mind with parallel bus compression trick..

this is pretty fascinating
Excellent video!
I put a little verb on my kick as well. Other audio people look at me like im crazy until they here how much better it sits in the mix.
Ahhh the Midas xl 4 nothing better ....
hahahahah Brent and Brad are always together.
Rush crew is dope
Only dopes use that word as hoodslang while trying too hard to be cool.
Nice 420 shot at 9:00
Nice trick paralel compresion
Pd: Is part of blues brothers band
nice hat Brad
nice sound engineer
What exactly is on those 48 channels?

wait, are they still touring with RUSH?
Why is he not mixing at foh?
Why did he equalize that way? PA system..some reason?

Oh brother, I know what you mean!
I'm currently looking to get either the XL4 or Heritage 3000/4000 for my new studio.
I'm uncomfortable just looking at him in that suit and tie, an eccentric character knows his stuff but relax with the dress code
apparently its a requirement from jack white along with the analog console

+slaction Who exactly are you on tour with, Slaction? Dont knock what works for the successful pro, dude.
I've seen Brad use just about every console under the sun. If he's running a XL4 for this particular gig you can bet he has a damn good reason for it.

How did she just say theatre at 2:15. She needs to go back to school.
She is French, and has an accent.
