    Always good to reintroduce another generation to this glorious music. These performers in this video are, as others have said here, OK, but not great. They are pretty and graceful, but rather nasal and offers the usual "stage singing" necessary for Broadway. NOTHING will match the 1968 Don Francks and Petula Clark rendition of this song--fortunately captured on film for us to enjoy and here easily found on YOUTube. When I saw "Finian's Rainbow" in Santa Barbara at the State Theater in 1968, I was in junior high school and the Old Devil Moon song blew me out of my seat. Still does. The steamy, yet restrained passion and ability to "pause" at just the right moment in the song is what makes Francks' and Clark's performances so good. Don Francks has never been given appropriate credit for the excellent performance he gave in that movie. His utter focus on Petula Clark's character as "Woody" and the manner in which he played a difficult role is so memorable and professional.

      You are OUT of your mind -- the Petula Clark duet in the movie STUNK to high heaven -- gave it no justice -- they were talk-singing, stalling and way off pitch and totally out of rhythym -- their version should be IL-LEGAL ...!!

      You are all wrong, obviously. Even a deaf person could tell the BEST version of this song is Frank Sinatra's, nothing like the old devil to sing this song. I heard him live at the age of -25 at a small New York bar.

      People obviously have their favourite version of this song. I absolutely love the Don Francks-Petula Clarke version. Coppola shot it in a very intimate manner - quiet but powerful. The way Don looks at Petula made me feel like a voyeur!

    Sadly, I doubt they will ever do another Broadway revival of Finian's Rainbow, as it's not considered "politically correct", with the blackface etc., despite having an anti-bigotry message which will no doubt get lost. Surprisingly, the best versions and orchestrations of the songs are on the movie soundtrack with Petula Clark.

    • @scottandrewhutchins
      @scottandrewhutchins Před 3 lety

      Did they actually do this in blackface in the 2009 production? Even the movie used black actors.

    • @gljm
      @gljm Před 2 lety +2

      @@scottandrewhutchins I saw the Encores production which was what transfered to Broadway, and NO they did not do "Blackface". The actor Philip Bosco who played the racist Senator Rawkins was replaced by the actor Ruben Santiago-Hudson after the leprechaun Og changes the color of the Senator's skin. All the Black characters were played by Black actors.

    It's okay. Jackson's vocals are fine but don't measure to that of Don Francks who was also sexy as hell in the film version. Kate's vocals are good and strong. But their performance is too high school quality. Lacks the passion, sultriness, and vibrancy of the film version which was epic and left me panting.

    • @nalkarj2840
      @nalkarj2840 Před 4 lety +1

      Agreed with this. “High school quality” is the perfect description.
      It’s, well, fine, but as another commenter wrote, “I don’t believe they are bewitched.” At least they sing Yip Harburg’s exceptional lyrics clearly.
