In this cello technique tutorial I will guide you step-by-step through various bowing patterns across three different strings, demonstrating each pattern and playing through measures for easy following. Emphasis is placed on wrist flexibility, a crucial element in changing bow angles effectively when moving from string to string, starting from lower strings like G or C, and gradually transitioning to higher strings.
This tutorial also addresses common challenges such as maintaining the right bow position for different strings and ensuring even volume across notes. Techniques covered include playing groups of notes with different bowing patterns, staying in the middle part of the bow, and the nuanced martelé stroke. Whether you're a seasoned player or advancing in your cello journey, this video is an invaluable resource for refining your technique and enhancing your musical expression. How difficult for you to make smooth string crossings? Any advice you can share?

Start by practising portato. Make sure that the finger is ready before the bow gets there. Consider starting with an up-bow on the lowest string, both for ease and for fuller tone. Minimize the difference in angles by anticipating the new string level.

3rd and 6th etudes of Feulliard studies of the young cellist helped me get the wrist movement. Now I can on this. Keeping bow straight and keeping a continuous sound at tip is harder. Thank you.

@@CellopediaContinuing with Feulliard- I go back and forth 1-25 picking one or two to focus on. The 40 bowing exercises by Sevcik -the first 3. C.Harvey shifting exercises 4-5 half through the book. I am going back and forth with Suzuki books 1-5 now. I start memorizing and getting the intonation and rhythms. Then I work on bowing and sound while watching the mirror. As I learn a better way I go over old pieces I will have been playing 3 years in October.
