- this is it! from now on there is no coming back. once the machine is a part it will be put back with new rails, ball screws, servos, new controllers, new pump, electronics etc.
from now on I will be sharing my journey of the upgrade. might be long but it will contain all the explanations about the design choices and ways of adjusting all the stuff needing adjusting.
I have made a website where you can find plans and in the future it will be the place for everything related to the channel and the cnc itself.

I can't wait to stop renting and buy a house with a garage for all my CNC's and 3D printers! It's doable if you rent a big house with a couple friends, we have 2 bedrooms each and my second bedroom is my 'workshop' that's just about at the limit of how many machines I can fit in there

You are a machine when it comes to this....I just wish I had the patience and time to do something like that. I am building 2 full size aircraft so that takes up my time..but your builds on this granite machine is outstanding. I love it and even the idea on how you have done it out of surface plate and kitchen tops.

You could always drill a bit bigger if it off and fill it up. But yeah its better to drill in the right spot first time ;)

Yup those rails sits on the walls with 2.5mm to spare on both sides ;) almost perfect fit ;) i could have gone with size 50 ;)

Awesome man! been following this for a long time now! That must be some INSANE epoxy to hold those threaded studs! Such a cool DIY CNC project, one of my favorites!
Thanks. This epoxy is really good 👍 the contact surface for those studs is huge. 50mm deep. More to come soon ;)

I have been waiting to watch this video and the size of those rails!! My own build is now alot better after watching this series and seeing how you have built your machine, I must of spent two days polising the aluminum and it is like night and day as to how smooth my machine is working..

So good having a kiwi to watch machine is going to be a beast those rails on it they big 💪. You can also get the Chemical Anchor at bunnings in a normal 300ml tube so no need for a special gun
Thanks mate ;) do you have a name for this chemical anchor? Machine turned out to be just like comercial ones from the top shelf 👌 check my instagram i have pictures from my first test in there. Mirror finish on a 3d milled ball. And i wasnt even trying hard. Just had to dial in tolerance in fusion to 1 micron.

Ramset Ultrafix Plus 300ml think miter10 and bunnings have but there Lots of options for normal gun can get small 150ml tube if you shop around

Yeah rigidity is the key. quality of the other components adds to it as well, if you want to have perfect finish.
Man!!, I'm not surprised those packs were so gritty. Did you ever grease them, I don't see any covers or bellows on them either. Those aren't designed for open machining , would need steel scrapers over their wipers. Maybe the new ones will fare better.
yes i did grease them and reballed them a year ago because they where way too loose. I will have to make something for the new ones

45mm ;) and yes they are roller guides. Preloaded to precision standard.

There are little plastic covers that fill the screw holes in the linear rails. If you don't use these, chips and coolant an get inside the bearing blocks by hiding in the screw holes. You might as well not have wipers on the trucks if you aren't using those caps for the screws. That's probably why your bearings got so rough.
I've also seen some machines use epoxy filling the holes which is shaved flat with the rail when it cures. My Mazak is like that.
i noticed it. im thinking about some adhesive strap to cover the whole rail. or plugs if i wont find it.
btw if they fill rails with epoxy how do you replace them later?
@@PiotrFoxWysockiI lied, I just went out to the shop and looked again and they are little plastic caps. Maybe I'm confusing it with something I saw in a youtube video before where a cap is used and then epoxy to level it flush and smooth with the rail.
In any case, anything to keep coolant and chips out of the grease and the balls in those trucks would help their longevity.

Hahaha, right now im trying to edit the next one. Its kinda hard to shorten a month to few 20 minutes episodes so it makes sense at the same time, but not cut too much so people can follow what is going on and the order of things. Trickier than i thought ;)

Piotr, you definitely need some 1-2 micron indicator. Reading microns from common 0.01 indicator is not the best practice. Its very useful for rails tramming, but not for parts setup. I can recommend chinese Syntek brand, it looks like Mitutoyo copy.

How do you check if two rail are perpendicular? By using two indicator at an flat edge at the same time?

When you put those rails on the table my jaw DROPPED. Those are enormous! For the ball screw, why does the flex matter at all? The ball screws are definitely not designed to be structural, thats that the rail supports are for.
good question, glad you asked. thin and long ball screws will bend when they are pushing load from the motor. so they start whip lashing and transmit vibrations to whatever is attached to them. when they are bending position of attached component is different. and all this is affecting surface finish. when they are pulled, they are straight, so no problem.
bigger screws keep attached axis in place much better than skinny ones.
if the this screw is bent just even so slightly it will allow for bending more under the load.

I started from 6040 chniese cnc ;) whole machine was 50kg. Now just my gantry is 130kg ;)
Machine is finished and i have some pics on my instagram of the first test cuts. Well.. i can not complain 😁

Hey, awesome job. Those rails look so intense, especially compared to your old ones. A few questions
1. How did you get the linear rail to sit perfectly flat, I think I missed that?
2. IN a previous video, I thought you showed that the linear rails were bowed. How did you correct, fix or address that issue?
1. when i made the base i made it as flat i was able and it was with in few microns. so there was no real need to do anything. i just shimmed front and back because was looking a bit low.
2. in the previous video i was considering using 2 other rails for my x axis. but i was worried that they will push centre of the gravity too far from the gantry so i bought smaller rails.
the big rails for sidewalls where also bowed but it wasn't a problem because i just bolted them down and this straightened them without a problem. sidewalls are vertical and 300mm tall so they act like 300mm of granite. where the gantry is 200mm tall but i would be bolting them from the side where granite is only 50mm so this would bend the granite.
I might include a short info how i straightened those rails. even if i haven't used them at the end
Hey Mr Fox, you just saved me from buying 16mm Ballscrews, will be going with 20mm now. What pitch would you recommend, it's a similar machine to your and will be cutting aluminum and similar. Thanks! Keep up the great videos!
5mm as it will have more resolution and more power.
Hi Fox, Could I ask what size air compressor you use for that spindle, the manual speaks of pressure but not what free air delivery it needs.
I have 3hp 50l 390cfm compressor. I think any compressor will work. It takes about 5 minutes to cycle. And it will take about 5 min to cycle any 50l compressor.

Ah. This is a white lithium grease. Apparently good for the rails.

I got my self uc300. Looks like its working gine. Mach 3 started working strangely but i will keep it untill i find what it causes. Than i can try lunux cnc.
@@PiotrFoxWysocki That is so professional and precise CNC hardware that you can take into account some Industrial CNC to control it. I'm in develop-team of a board called RosettaCNC born to the industrial application but available to all. If you want to take a look at the software it is free and without a card works as a simulator.
@@PiotrFoxWysocki The CNC Board is a true CNC and all interpolations, RTCP, toolpath management, look-ahead algorithms, smoothing, jerk control, smooth blending, etc are made in realtime on board rather than PC. Closed-loop with optical rails is also possible.
Hi Piotr. I have been following your builds for a long time, and a plan to do something like this myself some time in the future. I have a huge 750kg granite table i want to cut into the required pieces.(It was used for a four spindle PCB drilling machine)
What is the pitch you are using on your ball screws, and what is the size of the motors you are planning?

I would recoment to look in to the epic upgrade part 1 and 2. All parts and sources are in the video descripions.
I would recomend 5mm pitch. And im using 400watt servos. But you could use steppers as well. Check epic upgrade 1 and 2 i have all the parts there

would be nice but this is too much work :D according to the manufacturer recommendations i can grease it once a year and it should be fine
@@PiotrFoxWysocki only if its covered and sealed i guess 🤔 with open construction they might slide like your old ones after a year...

I know... sorry for that but i thought this series was getting terribly boring already with all the measurements. I thought i gived lots of examples of measurements through the build.
@@PiotrFoxWysocki i was waiting for this specially, how did u make them parallel?
I used the left rail which was set and connected to the gantry. Right rail was lose and carriages where loose. Moved gantry to the front and bolt the rail down gently than back and the middle. Then i tighten the carriages gently and loosen up the rails. I did this procedure like 20 times. So everything found its best place to be in. In the mean time i was checking if the gantry is still square. Its quite tricky do do this right tho.. and you might end up with quite big discrepancies.. especially when you are using smaller rails. Its a pandora's box i didnt really wanted to open. But i kinda showed this on the top rail of the gantry.
@@PiotrFoxWysocki i also thought u did that, well that will work but i really think it is not optimum, i would still use the dial indicator, when done that way the movement is really uniform and smooth even with a preloaded blocks
another mistake i am really surprised that you made is that you are no using dual driver system!! this could be the main reason for your damaged old rails along with chips getting inside them, try to dissemble the old blocks i think they r filled with chips, check the rails grooves for damage, i think they might be ok and just chips inside the trucks that caused stiffness
how thick are the granite Plates?
Could you tell if the old X linear rail carriages were just worn out or were they maybe contaminated with coolant and swarf?
good question :D I couldn't really tell. but from the experience with them I can tell they are gone. I re-balled them before and they where quite bad to start with.

I suspect everything by little. But mostly because they where crap when i bought them. They where a Chinese no-name brand. Even before i installed them i knew i will have to replace them shortly.

Try to fit some kind of bellows to protect your new screws and linear rails. Flood coolant and chips will decrease the lifetime of these items really quick.
I will try to figure something out. Its easy for the Y, but not so easy for the gantry. Its just too short
@@PiotrFoxWysocki yeah I know. I have the same problem, let me know if you find a good solution :) I've been thinking about a plastic sheet that could roll on the backside of the gantry, but it requires alot of redesigning.. :(I
Had the same idea a while ago ;) way to many pulleys around. And still there will be a problem with the bottom. Maybe a something super elastic.

Just curious Fox, are you buying granite and finishing it yourself or buying precut pieces to a precise measurement and then lapping them to have higher precision or? I am curious as I am currently building a steel CNC and would LOVE something like this but I am "disabled" so $ is not always in my favor :( What type of $ is involved in something like this? Please show me the way! ;P

$ wise, it will depend where you live and what kind of parts you will source, but it should be around 3-15k.

Yea, with that big of a difference in price range, it is probably something I can not afford :( I have been piecing together parts now and then to finish my steel build but as you said, you don't like rust and I would LOVE to have a flood table so they don't mix well LOL.
