Once I started to read into Super Editions like Leopardstar's Honor, I started to let tears go down my face at deaths of Whiteclaw, Sunfish, and her mentor. Bluestar's prophecy, the death of her mother. I wasn't very emotional when I read Tigerstar's Shadow (Tigerstar 2). Also the triplet of novellas, I forgot the name, but Spotfur's Rebellion... Oh Stemleaf... Oh Spotfur. It made me cry. And Blackstar's one too. The vision of him attacking in the rogue attack. Then the vision of Brokentail...... The poor kit. There was also Daisy's one. I think that made me cry too. Now as I watched this, I tried not to cry. And people don't understand villains. They just DON'T. AND PEOPLE HATE VILLAINS. THEY HATE THEM. MOST OF MT FAVOURITE CHARACTERS ARE VILLAINS! LIKE SCOURGE! AND DARKSTALKER FROM WINGS OF FIRE! AND VILLAINS ARE COOL TOO! WHY DO PEOPLE HATE THEM SO MUCH? I WILL DO SOMETHING BAD TO ANYONE WHO TRIES TO DISAGREE WITH ME!

Needletail actually does have a tragic backstory. In one of the Barnes and Noble exclusive chapters of I think Thunder and Shadow, we learn about her. When she was an apprentice she was carried off by an owl and had a literal stranger help her back home, and she learned her clan didn't even bother to send a search party or even worried about her.
It's not the saddest but it makes sense why when she's older she doesn't care about ShadowClan and joins with Darktail.
Now, these chapters should've never been Barnes and Noble exclusive, but this one is vital into understanding Needletail as a character.

And the identity of their father was never stated in books; don't care about what "official website's family tree" states, Whitestorm was brought up several times to be Sorreltail, Rainwhisker and Sootfur's father, but never Ashfur and Ferncloud; neither does he act any bit fatherly towards them, with Sorrelkit he at least visited her in the medicine cat den. When he was tired of kidnapping he led a predator on their territory which led to them losing a couple of warriors. He was happy but wanted more so he tried attacking the deputy but he lost the fight and lost a life.He tried to led the leader and deputy to a predator but he failed and died instead.he tried everything in his power to bring the clan down but it led to him losing all of his 9 lives and went to the dark forest

    @0.721x Před 2 lety +5

Mapleshade was already a horrible person before the death of her kits and her mate reasonably leaving her. She indirectly lied about being the mate of a dead cat and used his clearly grieving family, she assumed that starclan would be ok with what she was doing, and when she was being sentenced she refused to acknowledge her crimes and threatened thunderclan after her sentence.
And Appledusk leaving her is completely valid as she ignored the desperate pleas of their kits and forced them to cross a flash flooded river. Him blaming her means he actually cares about his kits and he cared about her because when she was drowning in the river he saved her then immediately went to save his kits and he even ask her if she deliberately crossed the river when the Riverclan patrol found their bodies.
Also it’s never confirmed he cheated on her because we read through mapleshades POV and it’s proven to be very untrustworthy and idiotic. Her Assuming he cheated would be the equivalent of her assuming frecklewish watched her kits drown which also isn’t the true.
And to note cat pregnancies in warriors are not that accurate as some cats in the series are pregnant immediately and some take more time, the same way how they age up cats so it’s more likely he got reedshine pregnant after leaving Mapleshade as for one the book was coming to an end and her novella was obviously rushed.

This comment is too long so it's in parts because I can't reply otherwise. Do NOT swarm me without reading all of it. I'm fucking tired of this hellish fandom giving me death threats for liking Mapleshade and acknowledging that this book is a tragedy and her victims were not perfect little saints.
Read the book instead of following Moonkitti, BGA, and Kiri like a cult member. This fandom has its head up its ass following popular CZcamsr's every word.
Appledusk DID canonically have an affair. He "apologizes" to Reed specifically, and she fucking wails when he says he met with Mapleshade. She is at a level of pregnant that she'd had to have been pregnant before Patch, Petal, and Larch drowned.
He's not a little saint, he's a fucking pathetic excuse for a man. ONE good action does not erase months/years of being a little prick.
His "apology" is nothing. He's practically saying "Well, sure, I did that but I'm here saying I regret it so sorry if YOU see ME in a bad light."
He canonically calls Patch, Petal and Larch mistakes and lightly threatens Mapleshade before she runs from Riverclan, half fucking dead.
Again and again and again when I hear debates about this book and its characters, I continuously hear about how Mapleshade isn't "reliable" Or that she was always an evil vile manipulator who deserved to be exiled and have her children drown. Or that she's the ONLY bad guy in the story, and everyone else is perfect little angels who did no wrong whatsoever.
You guys should not automatically take CZcamsr's personal thoughts about a book or character as canon/truth.
Repeat: Do not fucking swarm me without reading this whole thing. I have been given death threats for liking Mapleshade and I'm fucking tired of this hellpit of a fandom trying to tell me I deserve to die for liking a villain and acknowledging this tragedy book as a tragedy.
One reason why I've heard people say Mapleshade and/or her book isn't "reliable" is that she "dislikes her clanmates", so therefore her view, and by extension, the book, is "biased."
That Mapleshade was evil from birth, that she manipulated everyone from the start and never cared about her kids.
But Mapleshade never expressed any ill will or dislike of her clanmates… AT ALL. EVER.
It is only AFTER she is exiled that she becomes angry and bitter towards her clanmates. I have read the book countless times and I have yet to find an example of Mapleshade expressing any blatant dislike of her clanmates, so honestly, I am under the assumption people are 1: assuming things or making shit up just because Mapleshade is a villain. Or 2: twisting some meaningless insignificant text from the book to fit their weird personal fanon narrative.
For example, someone once told me that Mapleshade must dislike her clanmates because she claimed to "not have any faith" in them. Except, when you go and read the actual text, it goes as follows:
The RiverClan warrior curled his tail over his back. "I'm going to be a father," he purred. "Incredible." He tipped his head to one side. "But these kits will be half-Clan. Half RiverClan. How will your Clanmates feel about that?"
"They won't know," Mapleshade answered. She noticed Appledusk flinch. "At least, not at first," she went on. "I will raise them as ThunderClan until they have been fully accepted. Then every cat will be able to cope with the truth. Why should it matter that their father lives in a different Clan?"
The fur on Appledusk's shoulders twitched. "You have great faith in your Clanmates," he murmured.
"No, I have faith in StarClan, and in the warrior code."
When given the actual context, it doesn't read "I dislike my clanmates" in the slightest. There is no resentment or hostility, she's just acknowledging the reality of her situation: her clanmates ABSOLUTELY would not accept half-clan kits or a mother with a Riverclan mate. So instead of putting her trust in them, she is putting her trust in Starclan, as most other cats in the series do. Additionally, on the very next page she is shown to be playful and teasing with an apprentice:
The air in the clearing was still and cold, tasting of old leaves and damp earth. The little orange apprentice bounced around Mapleshade. "Hurry up! When did you get so slow?" Mapleshade flicked him lightly with her tail. "What would Deerdapple do if you spoke like that to her, hmmm?"
Nettlepaw looked down at the ground at the mention of his mentor. "She'd probably make me pick ticks off Rabbitfur for a moon," he admitted.
Mapleshade purred, too full of joy about her kits to be short-tempered. "You're lucky that I won't punish you, then. Now, off you go and let me speak to Beetail."
Normal adult/apprentice behavior. Why would a she-cat who blatantly hates her clanmates have such playful, lighthearted interactions with them? We never see that from any other cat who dislikes its peers. She's a normal she-cat. Why do you guys try so hard to paint her pre-exile self in such a shitty light? The entire point of her story is that she is a normal, loving mother who turned to evil after the death of her kits. She isn't an already evil dirtbag who became even eviler.
The only times Mapleshade ever expresses any negative emotion towards her clanmates is after her kits are born. But ONLY when she is uncomfortable, or reasonably upset. See:
"Thank you," Mapleshade meowed hoarsely. She wondered if it would be rude to ask Oakstar to leave. His scrutiny was making her more and more nervous.
Mapleshade fought down the urge to bat Frecklewish away. These are my kits, not yours!
      -
The old tom narrowed his eyes. "You're not that bad," he rasped. "I can't believe any kit of Birchface would be heavy-footed as a badger." He glanced at Petalkit, who was licking the paw that had caught on the stick. The blood was roaring in Mapleshade's ears now. "I will not have my kits judged before they have even begun their warrior training!" She hissed. "Patchkit, come here! We're going for a walk in the forest!"
These are all the examples I could find until her exile when she actually becomes defensive. (No. You cannot use the hatred Mapleshade feels after the death of her kits as proof of her pre-exile self being evil. That makes no fucking sense.)
Throughout the first half of the book, Mapleshade presents no genuine hate or dislike towards her clanmates. She only wanted Oakstar to leave the nursery because she was nervous? And was protective over Frecklewish being too close to her just-born kits? And was mad that a clanmate dissed her kits' pouncing skills? None of this speaks "Mapleshade dislikes her clanmates!" or "She never loved her kids!"

I've seen people claim (pre-exile) Mapleshade is some evil manipulative monster is because she views her kits as a blessing. And a mother viewing her kits as a blessing automatically means she does not care about their wellbeing?
And no Moonkitti using the "Appledusk is mine, these kits will make sure of that," line is not a valid argument. She's right. Appledusk is her husband who she fucking believes is monogamous. She has no idea he's an affair-having prick. She just told him she's pregnant, walked away, and saw another woman walk right up to him and cuddle with him. Anyone would get anxiously jealous at that. Obviously, it's not Reedshine's fault, it's Appledusk's, but this scene does not tell us she planned to use her kits.
And before that, when he first sees her, he flexes his claws at her. No need for that whatsoever. She's there visiting him because he has been standing her up for weeks, as we find out in canon, and this is a gathering. Cats are allowed to cross between the different clan groups at gatherings. Of course, relationships are not allowed, but it is literally a time when cats can go visit their friends from other clans. Any cat watching would have assumed she was a friend.
When he shows his true colors, he says sorry because he got caught. When the kits die, he debates saying no to bringing their bodies to camp. He does not vouch for them to be given a vigil, which is something all cats should have, and he is shown to be perfectly fine training Perchpaw just a couple of days later.
ONE good action does not erase months/years of being a prick.
He had an affair on his wife, long-term and serious enough to get his mistress pregnant.
Mapleshade never acts controlling toward him prior to her breakdown. And no, you can not use her view of him after her breakdown as evidence, that makes no fucking sense. She never gets pissed that he's been standing her up, she never forces him into anything, she loves him for fucks sake.
And even with Birchface and Flowerpaw. If he felt any guilt over that, THE BOOK WOULD HAVE NOTED IT BECAUSE MAPLESHADE LOVED HIM. He canonically shows no remorse.
I have two copies of MV, one has the "That stupid apprentice should have never followed him into the river." line, the other does not. I don't know why this happens, but take that if you want.
I mean I'm not even going to bother with this one. Mapleshade (let it be known that when I refer to Mapleshade, I only mean her pre-breakdown self) adores her kits. The love she has for her kits IS WHY SHE BECOMES A VILLAIN IN THE FIRST PLACE.
"This mother does not care about her kits"
And yet grieves when they pass, has a mental breakdown, and kills cats as an act of vengeance over their deaths.
She never plans to show them off. If anything, Frecklewish and Oakstar need to be called out for that when they literally state the kits will be raised as weapons. She never compares them to Appledusk, she's a proud mother for fucks sake. Is a mother not allowed to think of the husband she loves when she has their children?
For a moment Mapleshade wanted to tell the other cats to get out, to leave her alone with this tiny precious creature. Nothing would ever be as special as this heartbeat when she met her first kit.
AND NO, you can not blame her for the first line there. It is canonically noted in Warriors multiple times mothers are protective of their newborns- as they should be, and Mapleshade is a first-time mother and was just having trouble with the pain of the contractions.
She never forces her anxious son into anything he doesn't want to do, she defends her children from Rabbitfur's judgment, and never tried to make them replicas of any other cat, unlike the other cats in Thunderclan who we actively see compare their every breath to Birchface.
At her worst, Mapleshade is delusional. She believes that if her clanmates grow to love and care for her kits, they will continue to do so after it is revealed they are half-Riverclan, and by extension, come to accept Riverclan cats, ending their battles altogether. A part of this stems directly from the care she has for her kits; she wants them to be loved and accepted by their birth clan, rendering them safe from any hatred or ill will. But it also stems from the love she has for her mate, in which she hopes the two clans will stop their fighting so she and Appledusk can be at peace.
Mapleshade believing all of this doesn't make her manipulative, it doesn't make her a shitty mother who doesn't love her kits, it doesn't make her some possessive stalker woman who is overly controlling of her mate - it makes her a naive she-cat who is blind to the reality of the situation at hand. Simple as that. She believes things will play out exactly how it does in her rainbow sparkles fantasy land. But obviously, they don't.

      3/3
      And just a note:
A book focusing on one character doesn't make it inherently unreliable. Like… A narrator is never inherently an unreliable one. That's just the truth. A villain narrator can be equally as reliable as a hero, and a hero narrator can be equally as unreliable as the villain. You cannot twist shit and claim Mapleshade and her book is "unreliable" just because you don't personally like her character, you don't personally agree with her actions (which the book never tries to make you do in the first place), or you don't personally enjoy how the plot/characters were handled. That is simply not how it works.
But I would also like to point out that Mapleshade doesn't even have control over the narrative in the first place. An unreliable narrator is almost exclusively present in the first person point of view, which Mapleshades Vengeance IS NOT. How can a narrator be unreliable if they aren't even the narrator?
Post-exile Mapleshade is a feral, starving murderer, but that is 100% not a reflection of the book's story or narrative. She didn't start evil. She wasn't always an evil bitch. She never "used" her kits. Appledusk was not a poor little saint. Reedshine deserved better than this affair-having prick.
And by the logic of "Grief excuses all," then Mapleshade is a saint. But she's not, because grief is not an excuse. It is a reason. Frecklewish doesn't belong in hell, but she's not justified for screaming verbal abuse at toddlers and clearly scaring them in doing so, and then committing aggravated assault attacking their mother in front of them, and negligent manslaughter by watching them struggle in the river.
If Mapleshade could be IN the fucking water and hear the RC patrol shouting once they'd seen her in there, Frecklewish could have yelled for them the second she saw the patrol. Frecklewish could have saved precious seconds if she had, maybe even enough to save one of the kits.

@@xxblackdahliaxx6490 Not you victim blaming Appledusk. Please explain how he stood her up. I’m getting a strong Impression that you’ve never even read the book despite owning it and you’ve built your “information” soley off of other peoples opinions. Literally everything I have stated is facts as it happened in the book. Appledusk being forced to stay away from here is not standing her up it’s called having common sense because both thunderclan and Riverclan doubled their border patrols after the battle over running rocks.
You saying he killed birchface and with no remorse is also false. There is literally evidence in the text of him feeling uncomfortable when talking about his and flowerpaws deaths and he even outright says it’s an accident.
**She felt Appledusk stiffen beneath his pelt. “It was an accident,” he growled. “I never meant for him to fall into the river.” Mapleshade closed her eyes. “That’s not the way my Clanmates see it. They blame you for both of our losses.” [...] “Then they are fools.” Appledusk shuddered, then relaxed." - Chapter 1.**
It uses language like shuddered and stiffened, Appledusk is having a physical reaction to when he's reminded of the accidental death he caused, clearly showing he's uncomfortable about it and yes, regretful. So you can’t even use that false fact saying he felt no remorse when accidentally “killing” him.
And please explain why you’re lying making up false facts saying ridiculous things like “he rufuses to bring their bodies to camp”
He clearly cared about his kits and was upset when they died. Even in death he still loved them with all his heart and there’s clear evidence of this in chapter 5.
**Appledusk set down Petalkit’s body as gently as if she were sleeping." - Chapter 5, even when his kit is dead, Appledusk makes sure to be careful with their body.**
And Mapleshade, she is a horrid person even before the birth of her kits and there’s clear evidence of it, as examples of her using her kits to seal a claim on him. She didn’t see her kits as living beings and wanted to use them as tools. Please explain how her saying “stay away from him reedshine he’s mine and these kits will make sure of that” doesn’t imply that she planned to use them as bargaining tools to seal a claim on her mate.
And who the hell cares if he “cheated” on her cats have no concept of what that is just because they have seemingly humanized thoughts doesn’t mean they comprehend cheating, mating for life, and same sexuality relationships. And it’s incredibly funny how everyone demonizes him for “cheating on Mapleshade” but then act like Whitestorm didn’t do the same thing with brindleface when he went and got with graystripes mother and got her pregnant. Or how Doverwing was trying bumblestrioe out around the same time she was with tigerheartstar and she says she’s only trying him out because he’s thunderclan. Or how bluestar let thrustpelt pretend to be her mate while knowing of his obvious feelings for her which is at this point pretty close to becoming mates with him.
She doesn’t treat her mate nor her kits as living beings only objects used to get any and everything she wants. And where is it proven that Appledusk is sorry he got caught. The only thing he regretted was getting into a relationship with a woman who doesn’t have basic common sense nor values the safety of those around her. He had every right to leave her and you people sit there and Demonize him for it but then turn around and scream he deserves to die or that her murders are justified.
Mapleshade clearly doesn’t love her kits if she couldn’t do one simple task which was to keep her kits safe, and that stupid argument about her “not being in the right head space” isn’t going to work because even then any mother that cares about their child regardless of what mental state she was in she would put her child’s life first before her own as they are their pride and joy but she didn’t do any of that. She only cared about what she wanted which is exactly what led to her kits demise because of her stupidity of believing a flash flooded river would be safe to cross and believing that starclan will approve of her half clan kits and a side note, using a dead cats grieving family very much is Manipulative and abusive stop trying to Glorify it.

@@xxblackdahliaxx6490 Please explain how I’m twisting the facts about her book. You’re only assuming that and making the assumption that I’m twisting lies about her because I “dislike her” if me disliking your favorite character hurts your feelings then oh well that’s not my fault but don’t go saying I’m twisting shit just because you don’t wanna believe the facts.
And Frecklewish never watched her kittens die. And none of the additional facts that the new story team wrote in are true. In the original book it’s stated that frecklewish only saw Mapleshade fall off the stones it didn’t say anything about her seeing the kits. You could say the writing team have free reign to make certain things canon but I personally feel that the idiotic explanation they gave as to why frecklewish is in the DarkForest isn’t canon, as they did not write Mapleshades vengeance.
**And Vicky Holmes the one who wrote the entire novella herself believes frecklewish is in starclan. Vicky, the sole Author who worked on the book statement’s is proof enough that she should be in starclan as she hasn’t at all mentioned that she should be in the DF. What the writing team has stated is bs and clearly isn’t true. As for one we’re reading the book through Mapleshade’s perspective. And her perspective is proven to be very untrustworthy as she is just an overall horrible cat and only cares about what she wants. The book is literally an autobiography about her life and that should have been clear enough that it was through her perspective and you can’t say that it isn’t when it’s exactly true. It is also her who ASSUMED frecklewish watched them die when nettlepaw told her that frecklewish followed her to make sure she left.**
It was never Frecklewish’s intention to let them die but that’s what happened anyway. Mapleshade only killed her because she didn’t wanna accept that fact that she is the reason her kits died. And in the book we constantly see her shifting the blame so she can make herself feel better. There are cats in the series who have lost way more than her and still managed to stay on the right path even when they had no one by their side to help them. So it was very possible for her to move on in time.
And before their deaths she was already constantly putting her kits lives in danger, when she took them out the camp while they were too young and let them swim in a river where she almost indirectly caused a fight with the Riverclan patrol before Appledusk talked them down and went to fish patchkit out the river, she then proceeds to act all “lovingly” towards him and that’s when ravenwing sees them and comes to the conclusion. That’s exactly how they got kicked out in the first place. Without that, Ravenwing's omen by itself: Three Reeds in a Thunderclan camp, could have had a million meanings and didn't directly point to Mapleshade's kits at all. However, by Mapleshade taking her kits to the river and talking with Appledusk, she gave him all the clues he needed. Clear evidence of her being a horrible mother and not protecting their secret.
And Mapleshade deserves a way harsher punishment as she committed worse crimes than giving birth to half clan kits. Mapleshade was mates with the Riverclan cat who "killed" two of her Clanmates, yet continued to love and see him even afterwards.
She cruelly used one of the victims' names and his grieving family, including her best friend, pretending to be his mate and mother of his kits. And when she was exposed, she refused to acknowledge any wrongdoing and threatened Thunderclan after her sentence.
And before you say “frecklewish shouldn’t have assumed” that isn’t the problem has Mapleshade had the queens right to not reveal the father much like bluefur(star) or she simply could have told her no. But instead she took the chance to use her.
**Mapleshade took a deep breath. “I have no lied out loud. This was all Frecklewish’s doing. But I cannot turn down this chance to have my kits welcomed with the love they deserve”**
**“You have answered my prayers, frecklewish. She mewed softly “my kits and I are no longer alone”**
**A perfect example of her being an ass who deserves harsh punishment**
Everything I have said are facts based on my own opinions and actually reading the original book throughly through. If you don’t like what I have to say then don’t even bother responding because I’m not gonna argue with idiots who try to invalidate my opinion and who assume I’m twisting up lies about their favorite characters just because I dislike them when it’s literal canon and reader implied semi-canon non canon facts.

Clear Sky isn't a villain; he just made many mistakes and he truly regretted everything he did for his clan. Greed often clouds his judgement and that caused problems between him and his family even from the other clans. He was a terrible father to Thunder, his own son and terrible brother to Gray Wing, but at least he finally made amends with them in the end. Despite what happened, he really does care about them and after Skystar moved on with Star Flower, he promised he will be a better father to his children including Thunder. Everyone deserves a second chance to be a better person
