It's the distance management combined with the defense
Sean is great at staying outside of the short range where people can just slug it out and KO him while at the same time staying close enough to not give long strikers with high reach like Izzy the opportunity to use their physical gifts

As an Izzy fan I never seen him so uncomfortable fighting anyone. He couldn’t find his rhythm, Sean’s defense was CRAZY. He walked him down the entire fight

@@xavierb9061 As much as don't like Jizzy it ain't that simple to stay in boxing range against Jizzy. Jizzy knows to control length from his end as well. It's the constant pressure of Sean charging forward, not giving jizzy enough space to load up his arsenal or just staying out of the range. Sean really did gain something by sparring with Poatan.

Been watching since the late 90s as a kid. Not many moments beat Sean knowing he’s dominated the fight and talking trash to Izzy, who is by FAR the betting favorite. I felt it in my gut. Sean had that dawg in him

Thats also Adesanya's lack of versatility. If he was someone like GSP, he could forget about striking and just wrestle, but Adesanya couldn't win fights by wrestling. Even Ngannou won vs Gane by wrestling (though Strickland is a much better wrestler than Gane)

If a fighter lands strikes, that will still contribute to the total number of strikes landed, regardless of whether they're blocked or not.
That's the exact reason why striking accuracy and significance also exist. To differ from strikes that are blocked/checked.

I think Issy has conditioned himself to not know how to deal with getting hit, as he's so phenomenal at avoiding damage, it's really worked to his disadvantage with a guy who accurate goes relentlessly for the head and lands at a nearly 50% rate.

Bruce Lee said it long ago, "You don''t need a bunch of fancy techniques to win a fight, all you need is a jab and a low kick". And Jeet Kune Do's primary "technique" is the jab lol. It's all about the basics.
Strickland also fights with his strong side infront so his jab and lead leg are stronger and more economic. I feel like strickland is alot smarter then people are lead to believe.

The weirdest thing to me, as someone who hadn’t watched this fight till now, is that none of them talked about Strickland’s front kicks with either leg and how he was using them as body jabs. Lots of counters to Adesanya’s hand-fighting and straights, lots of arresting teeps - and also lots of knee feints to play off of Adesanya’s anticipation of a front kick. Half his jab work was being done by those straight kicks, but DC said Strickland should jab more? Wild.
Also, I do like Adesanya’s style usually, but he was really not getting much sustained offence. At most I would give him round 2. The rest of the time he was too lost inside his own head, with brief flashes of success that feel like they encouraged complacency for much of rounds 3 & 4. The backfist / flicker jab offered a good angle for jabbing back at Strickland, as a replacement for handfighting, but he barely used it. We didn’t see Adesanya throw meaningful kicks over the lead shoulder until he winged one so hard that Strickland could back up with time to spare - and I can’t tell for sure on the frames but it looked like the attempted head kick was too high to land anyway.
Ultimately, good technical fight, nice knockdown, not as crazy as I’d thought it would be. If I scored it, there’d be 4 rounds Strickland, with 10-8 to him in round 1, but round 3 was reasonably close.

My girls favorite fighter is Sean Strickland. She can’t get enough of the guy. When we saw this fight together, we both lost our minds when he knocked Izzy down. It felt like we won when Sean won. She was devastated when Dricus won, but I thought he went out there and put out a performance that he shouldn’t be ashamed of. I hope he comes out even better against Costa and makes adjustments so power punchers aren’t as much of a problem for him.
When Sean dropped him in the first round when I watched it. I screamed “GET THAT DOGBENDER SEAN.”
izzy gets a bad rap but he's a good person at heart. I saw backstage footage of izzy vs costa.. after the fight everyone was backstage trying to get autographs from Israel. he was giving a speech about how "you can achieve anything you put your mind to, trust". a woman was holding her baby and it started crying disturbing the whole atmosphere. did Izzy get rattled? no. he called her over and offered to breast feed that baby without hesitation.
