Not a big chess player, but I love it nonetheless.

I guess they didn't have Garry Kimovych and Bruce Pandolfini as their consultants (but something tells me that wouldn't change this production by very much).
Bobby Fischer played it at least once, and won. It’s called the Polish opening.

Well, I see Chess is here.
Billions and billions of moves on a 8x8 64 square piece of wood with 8 pawns 2 rocks 2 knights 2 bishops 1 king and 1 queen pawns only can either move 1 space or 2 counting as one move going forward only, only in the beginning the pawn can move 2 spaces the rest 1 at a time it can take pieces by encountering another piece diagonally and return pieces back to play by reaching the end of the board of the opposing players side there is the knight that can move it can be a first move since it can jump over pieces by moving like an L but those pawns have only 16 moves in total and if you count the knights which is 2 adds to 20 this is just counting your moves is that a billion
This may mean nothing to everyone, but, it means everything to me. I remember being taught how to play chess when I was only 9-10 years old, by the smartest man I’ve ever known. We would play days, and days, on end, until he taught me how to play the game proper. And I remember that greatest moment being on the evening that I beat him playing chess. I will never, EVER, forget the day… The look… The surprise… The PRIDE… On both sides.😔 May you Rest In Peace my friend. I look forward to the day that we can play chess again.
Chess is arguably the Greatest Game ever created..
It uses simple logic which a lay man can understand yet can be cryptic and vast that even geniuses can dwell into madness..
I think chess is an awesome game - but I'm going to argue for Igo/baduk/weiqi/Go. A simpler rule set, faster to learn, deeper strategies, better handicapping. It was only last year that AI could win at Go.
Super Mario Bros 3 is the greatest game ever created. I highly suspect it will outlive chess by hundreds if not thousands of years

"The pieces look like they do for a reason"
Hmm, yes, the floor here is made out of floor
The English alphabet has no reason for its particular order, so its natural to assume the same with chess pieces. Maybe that's why it stood good enough to be a fact that they had a reason to look that way.
Yeah that was a stupid fact I instantly thought "of course they are!"

I still want to know why there’s no “king me” in chess & no “check mate” in checkers
This is one of them Drive on the parkway but Park in the driveway scenarios lol
if the King gets captured, then it's an immediate checkmate, if any other piece on the board gets captured, it can be reused when the pawn crosses the enemy lines. So "Queen me baby" is more appropriate.

As a long time player I'm so excited that chess has exploded in popularity. It's kind of amazing it all happened from one show too. Hopefully many new players continue to play. There is so much gatekeeping and elitism in chess that hopefully it going mainstream changes that a bit.
The first "fact" is just plain wrong. Chess pieces gained their familiar look as recently as 1849. They were designed by Nathanial Cook and the first sets were sold by Jacques of London. The design was created to give all chess pieces a standard look, so the pieces couldn't be confused by people from different clubs or cultures. Howard Staunton, the self proclaimed world champion at that time, gave his name to the design, so they became known as "Staunton style pieces."
The pieces not representing people because of the Islamic faith is also nonsense. Islam is believed to have began in the 7th century. Some chess pieces found in Uzbekistan that date back to 760AD which depicted people riding animals as well as two soldiers. Also, the oldest known Isle of Lewis set can be dated back to 1150. Which entirely depicts people. So your claim about them being made more "vague and universal" and the pieces remaining unchanged since the 9th century is also false.
Was just about to say this, but in a far less informed way!
If you think chess has a lot of move probability, wait till you heard about Warhammer 40K

Apperently it's also very exciting. I was at a basketball summer camp in 2013 and we were done for the day around 7pm. The rule was that we were to go to bed by 9pm. Around 8.30pm me and another camper decided to play a quick game (not that quick). 9pm rolls around and we were halfway done, but the counselors and a fair bit of campers were curious enough to allow the game to be finished before we went to bed. It's 9.30pm and I win (it was more or less a clear cut win for me when I captured his queen with a knight and my queen was safe). We also didn't play with a timer... it wasn't included and I can't play with a ticking clock.

Another amazing ancient game (similar to chess) is Hnefatafl. It's possible that Hnefatafl was replaced by Chess in the 12th Century.
From Wikipedia:
"Tafl games (pronounced [tavl], also known as hnefatafl games) are a family of ancient Nordic and Celtic strategy board games played on a checkered or latticed gameboard with two armies of uneven numbers. Most probably they are based upon the Roman game Ludus latrunculorum. Names of different variants of Tafl include Hnefatafl, Tablut, Tawlbwrdd, Brandubh, Ard Rí, and Alea Evangelii. Games in the tafl family were played in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Britain, Ireland, and Lapland. Tafl gaming was eventually supplanted by chess in the 12th Century, but the tafl variant of the Sami people, tablut, was in play until at least the 1700s. The rules for tablut were written down by the Swedish naturalist Linnaeus in 1732, and these were translated from Latin to English in 1811. All modern tafl games are based on the 1811 translation, which had many errors. New rules were added to amend the issues resulting from these errors, leading to the creation of a modern family of tafl games. In addition, tablut is now also played in accordance with its original rules, which have been retranslated."

That thing about Queen Isabella is pretty cool. What would be even cooler, IMO, is if before she introduced the change, the rules were the opposite than what they are now, the king being able to move as the queen is [now] allowed, and the queen being limited to one square.
Then she would say "Screw this. The QUEEN should be free, and the king hobbled. Change the rules and I'll give it my blessing."

I was enjoying this video up until the origins of chess part. There are recordings of chess boards and pieces from Africa dating back over 1,200 years. India and Africa are ancient cousins. But information in those days flowed to the north from the south. Information often followed the same patterns of the human migrations from Africa. How many actual moves are in an opening? Seems to me there's one move. Whatever single move with an individual piece you choose is your opening.
