Maybe having being killed by their past self for trying to stand with the Dr, finding out about the t child, and destroying their home; they regressed back into the master. Possibly believing that the Dr would never forgive what he did so decides to embrace it.
Notice ow they have never really been able to kill each other, sure suffer and maybe a little bit of pain, but never actually kill one another.
I love this game of cat and mouse between them.

1:08 Something I noticed is the line "Look upon my work, Doctor, and despair".
"Look upon my works, ye mighty, and despair" is a line from Ozymandias, a poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley, whom the Doctor later meets and is clearly familiar with his poetry. Which means the Doctor definitely know the context of the line the Master has used. The line is a statement of a proud king boasting about his empire, but theres nothing around. Nothing left of what he is so proud of. The plaque and the remains of a statue are the only thing that remains of the king's "work". I love the detail of the line - it's not just an arrogant statement made by the Master to upset the Doctor. Its foreshadowing, that the Master's hubris will be his downfall.

Honestly for me, the 13th doctor reminds me the older child, looking after the younger and most catastrophic younger child (the master). Think about it. The master is causing chaos, having fun and all wanting is attention and to kill his boredom. The doctor is the older siblings, having to clean after the mess of the younger one. However, they are also young so often they get carried away or try to control the younger one by playing their game.

I love Jodie as the Doctor, I just think the writing isn't that great. But the chemisty (sexual or not) between Jodie and Sacha makes up for it all in ways that can't even be put into words. Chris isn't a great writer, but he knows how to cast em.
Strongly agree. My family though we would dislike her but episode one really sold me. I believe there is an audio book about the 13th doctor but written by the previous writers. Now that has my full confidence in doing her justice.

I miss Missy! Love the Master but this felt way too soon after Missy's redemption arc.. I liked that there were a few seasons between 10's Master and when Missy showed up. 1 season isn't enough time to breathe if you're going to do a whole redemption/relationship arc and then flush it down the toilet.
(No shade to the actors though, they're great with what they're given.)
