    For future reference, it is almost always best to land gear up in an emergency with WWII aircraft. Unless you know for a fact the ground is solid and you're in a tripod, keep your gear up and float her to the ground, flaring gently but considerably at the last second so you slide across the ground. You will still slow quickly but you won't flip or nose forward nearly as much.
    This is actually what the doctrine was in real life, and for many aircraft it still is. The only exception in IL2 really would be the Me-262, because landing on its engines could in real life cause them to deform and detonate, though I don't know if this is modelled in the game. But the Me-262 is also a tripod aircraft so its inherently more stable for landing in a field with gear down
    Tl;dr, gear up on emergency landing, trust me you'll prefer the results

      All true, and to avoid lawsuits from the ventral gunners in-laws it's generally advisable to land upsidedown as well whenever possible :)

      3 year old comment but this is really important advice to keep in mind. Just have to share a story that just happened to me in IL2 to anyone that may see this comment in the future.
      I did a Mosquito raid across the English channel took some heavy AA fire destroying my left engine and causing a rather substantial fuel leak. I pushed the remaining engine as hard as I could without destroying it as well, in a race against time from the leaking fuel, while attempting to gain altitude as much as possible to glide if the need arose. Well I made it all the way across the English channel, directed to the closest airfield on the map near the coast. Finally I could see land and just barley make out the airfield in the distance, at this point I gained substantial altitude and was coming in at about 15,000 feet, and right then before I had actually reached the coast my fuel ran dray and my second engine shut off. Gaining all this altitude paid off and I was able to make it above the airfield spiraling down for a landing, coming in too hot with full flaps I aggressively flared my rudder in a side slip to try to bleed off more speed, I made it to the last 25% of the runway; at this particular airfield past the end of the runway dips into a rather steep hill. I blew past the end of the runway wheels down in a panic as I started to go downhill I aggressively pressed the wheel brakes, in doing so the Mosquito abruptly and immediately nosed down flipping completely upside down crushing the canopy killing my pilot ending that campaign. If I had landed gear up I'm sure I would have survived that mission.

    Much better use of the bombing computer this time but still a little off to hit ‘ace’ level ;) The wind works in fixed ‘bands’ in Il2. As you were flying at 1500m you are firmly in the band that runs from 1000-1999m so the forecast wind would be 13m/s from 335 degrees. It doesn’t gradually fade off between bands but rather switches when you hit the next band. Any altitude between 1000 and 1999 would have the same setting but as soon as you hit 2000m you switch to the new input numbers of 16ms and 339 degrees (and that band would run from 2000m to 4999m). For this reason it’s always good to fly on a level that is not close to a band change ie if you flew at 2000m altitude your plane can dip up and down between the two bands and so 1900m or 2100m would be better for accuracy. Massive respect to you for this sortie - flying a 111 at night and even getting close to the target area is a huge feat!

      @ChattytumblerTCW Před 3 lety +7

      Although you set up nicely if you look back at the point in the video where you drop the bombs you’ll see the issue as to why the bombs dropped a bit randomly. If you look at the dial in the top right of the screen of the bombing computer you can see the view finder is set off a lot to the right (like about 20 degrees) and so what you are seeing in the bomb aimer is not where your bombs will fall. Unfortunately for level bombing you have to commit yourself from about 15km out from the target to flying perfectly straight and level with everything set dead centre. A lot of this was not your fault though, getting hit by AA is lethal and you are faced with a dilemma - flight straight and maybe get the bombs off before you explode or jink around and blind-bomb on the off chance you nuke something :)

    Just a tip. If you have to land in a field, don't use your gear. Mostly the ground is to soft, so the gear will dig into the ground and flip your plane over. Just put the plane down without gear. You will most likely slide over the ground and the chances of survival is mutch bigger. ;)
    I also noticed, when you swap to the bombing sight, the pilot goes automaticly into autopilot. Maybe you can ajust then.

    Taff: never lower your undercarriage on an emergency landing; you will always find that your aircraft will pitch forward using your landing gear. The landing gear is solely for landing on runways. Keep your landing gear up, and fly as level as possible and glide down, flaring just before you touch down and gently drag your tail into the ground.

    Out of interest is the hard pull to the right on take off due to both engines being aligned so the torque is all in the same direction as opposed to opposite? I know the Mosquito was like this so that engine replacements were easier. If that is the case then as I understand it the throttles are used to counter so something like 100% right, 90% left until up to speed and then slowly increase. Great vid as always although you might need a little more work on the landing :-)

  • @daveslow84

    I find it easier to set bomb aimer and release to auto, that way you can actually look ahead at your target in the distance. The aim point then stays centered on the target if wind, speed etc calculations are correct and bombs are released at the calculated drop point. I think the bomber then also stays level and responds to the steer commands?

  • @wntu4
    @wntu4 Před 3 lety

    In aviation (Yes, I have a pilot license) 'interpolation' is used when you don't have firm values and you have to use hard data from either side of your needs. Your wind I would have input as 14 at 337. Assuming you had this report pre-flight (at least in real life) it is something to be decided while on the ground.

  • @jameslanning8405
    @jameslanning8405 Před 2 lety +1

    I'm sure that when you open the bombay doors, it affects your airspeed a little. So it could cause a change in the path of your bombs.
    If it's possible, you should do some practice runs with the bomber, getting well acquainted with the bombsight and auto pilot. Doing it by day 'AND night.'
    You're under double pressure to get the plane on target as well as being shot at.
    Maybe a higher altitude would increase your chances against the AA guns on the ground. After all, they can only fire at what's in the spotlight. And if the lights can't get a good beam on you, it's all the better.
    But low and slow over AA is not a good recipe for success... For hitting the target or getting home...
