    This lesson teaches you how to use the 37mm cannons on the Stuka in IL-2 Sturmovik for ground attack. I show an easy attack profile and how convergence affects your results, while finishing with a demonstration of an attack against a convoy of heavy tanks, medium tanks, and soft targets.

      I don't know what WWII instructors sounded like, but I at least know my students really liked having me as their instructor particularly because of my teaching manner. I expected high standards but was always calm with them while flying even if they made a screw up. Knowing they weren't going to get yelled at lowered their anxiety a bit :-)

    To save more ammo, I've noticed that 4 rounds are often enough to start a fire on the tank (small black smoke). Then it explodes after 30sec more or less. Depends on which tank we are attacking of course.

    Appreciate you hanging in there with these, looks like views are starting to go up a bit.
    One thing I only realized very recently is "deflection" also affects elevation of the guns to compensate for the round dropping over distance. So with aircraft that have both cannons and MGs, often fired at the same time, how does that work? Initial velocities may be fairly close but ballistic efficiency of the rounds will be different. No idea how much this is actually modeled in the game. . .

    • @RequiemsACTL
      @RequiemsACTL  Před 6 lety

      Cheer Guard, yeah I'm still chugging along quietly here :-) Maybe I'll get over 10,000 subscribers in the next few months, but we'll see. Outside the IL-2 forum I don't think many people know about this channel.
      I'm not sure about the ballistics model if the convergence point is exactly the same for MG and Cannon actually, but as long as your convergence is reasonably close it wouldn't be much of an issue. Based on their mindset I would think the developers aim to have it as correct as possible. As an aside though, I am in the final stages of a video covering air-air gunnery using the Spitfire sight (followed by the other gunsights) so keep an eye out for that.

      czcams.com/video/X43Gws86IlQ/video.html
      From a dedicated ground attacker (over 650 hours in CAS from total 800 atm) who loves to attack AA fortified positions, here my list:
      1.) Attack, if visible, at first all lend-lease 40mm Bofor guns (medium high caliber fast firing gun)
      2.) Attack, if visible, at second all small caliber MG's (such as triple or double Maxim's)
      3.) Attack, now it should be clear, at last all high altitude firing AA (heavy high caliber slow firing gun)
      4.) If possible, fly minimum at a pair of 2. Number 1 is flying high speed near or even over target area to draw attention from AA to him.
      That gives Number 2 the chance a) to identify the AA guns, and b) the enemy AA is not aiming at you in this moment.
      5.) On an area with much AA, such as enemy Airfields, take always the most seperated AA guns out first.
      Situation a) you have time and enemy fighter chance of appearing is low - than fly out completly out of the target area after first/second/ect. approach, so the AA guns will calm down and their situational awareness will drop again, so you are ready for an other attack.
      Situation b) you have not much time and enemy fighter chance of appearing is high - than make 1 or 2 approaches, hit and leave the area.
      6.) If possible, line up 2 AA positions for 1 pass.
      7.) Firing your small caliber machinegun from a higher distance at the AA position may surpress them. Note the bullet drop on distance. Use in medium to near distance than the cannon(s).
      8.) If AA right or left ahead is firing to you and you already locked down on some before you, than exit after approach into this firing AA gun on left or right side. You shorten the distance to him and so the actual time he can shot on you. If you bypass this gun than, he has to turn the gun to you, what gives you some seconds.
      9.) Attack with speed, the more speed you have, the less time you are spending in hell.
      10.) Exiting up and down in some linear flight curve increases your chances not to get hit, than turning left and right when you are exiting.
      11.) In night the AA crew has a bad visual on you. But vice versa, since you know where they are :)
      12.) Dont be greedy. If your engine(s) are hit, return to base.
      13.) A very low attack profile in approach from a longer distance, quasi "under the Radar" like 10-20m, increases your survivability also a little bit.
      13 solid points and the devil rides with you ;)

      They do considering since I started using them my Ju87 bombing runs have resulted in more bombs on target and more successful escapes! Il2's Ju87s seem to be much more durable or perhaps Warthunder's AA guns are ridiculously op. A hit from AI AAA usually always results in an engine fire or crippling damage to the entire aircraft.

    I play a similar flight sim worldwar 2 online, I am wondering how he maneuvers onto the target here?
    Is he simply using aileron (banking) to get into position or does he also apply rudder? What about flaps?

      @RequiemsACTL  Před 6 lety +1

      Thanks Stor! It doesn't always take 6 rounds, any tank other than a KV-1 you can get away with 4 at a minimum. I just use 6 to guarantee a kill in one pass regardless if I my aim is off a bit and a couple of rounds miss. By ensuring you kill something in one pass you can be more efficient against your targets. Of course, if your aim is perfect every time you can get away with just the 4 rounds against most tanks.

    • @RequiemsACTL
      @RequiemsACTL  Před 6 lety +1

      Don't forget to stay coordinated too. As your airspeed changes in the dive and climb out your required rudder pressure /rudder trim to remain coordinated will change. If uncoordinated, the more drag you add to the airplane the less energy efficient your dives and climbs will be. If you're solo against an area with a strong AA threat a level extension away from the area before climbing back up is a better option though.

      The Air Combat Tutorial Library Thanks so much, before watching your videos I didn't even know being "coordinated" was a thing. Now I watch my turn and slip indicator all the time...I just wish I had rudder pedals (or was healthy enough to play sitting instead of standing) because it is difficult keeping coordinated with a twist rudder. Thanks again, I've subscribed and watched literally every video and I even feel smarter!

    • @RequiemsACTL
      @RequiemsACTL  Před 6 lety +1

      A good pilot knows that learning never stops so keep it up :-) You would probably be surprised how well you could do with RL flying by understanding the theory and some flight sim hours under your belt.
      I used a twist rudder for a long time, sometimes it can make things a little easier as your wrist can be capable of some precise movements. The feel you get from pedals is definitely the way to go though. I believe that using rudder pedals in simulators really helped me with my own flight training.

    At 8:37 you were lining up with the tank and I saw your crosshair moving more and more to the right without seeing any roll envolved. Is there a special trick I'm missing or is it just a lot of practice with the rudder?

    • @RequiemsACTL
      @RequiemsACTL  Před 3 lety

      That was just a very very subtle rudder movement. It takes practice to get yourself lined up how you want, you may need to correct for the wind as well so pay attention to how the plane is moving over the ground. Then you can make a slight heading adjustment so you're tracking towards the target instead of being pushed away.

    Does this tutorial works on war thunder ??

      Diego Hardy I definitely expect that it would as long as you can set convergence in WT of course. Although I use IL-2 to create these tutorials my goal is to demonstrate things in a way so you can use what I'm teaching in any simulator. I'm a flight instructor/airline pilot in real life so I aim to be as accurate to RL as possible with these videos

    the rear gunner was totally ineffective, so why did they even continue with that kind of defense all through the war?

      Better to have some sting in the tail than none at all I suppose, especially if anything that attacks you simply outclasses you in performance.
