The X-T4 is one of the best cameras ever made irrespective of sensor size or resolution, but it is a KILLER camera for street photography - especially with the lenses I recommend for it. But a used X-T2 is just about as good, and you can pick one up used (and the lenses to go with it) for a fraction of the price.

I've been shooting with high-end cameras for years and recently picked up a "5 megapixel" (debatable) Sigma DP2 - and absolutely love it! It's the camera (apart from some of my film cameras) that I reach for and makes me want to get out of the house and take photos - and that's what it's all about! Great video as always...

So refreshing to hear someone enthusiastic about the "serious compact" genre which has fallen on hard times of late. I have had about a dozen compacts, mainly powershots, from the 3MP up to my current 3 year old G7X Mk2 - all have done yeoman service as the pocketable minuteman for walkabout and casual outings and capturing the lion's share of memorable moments of family and hobby activities where an interchangeable lens camera would be obtrusive. Reminds me of Ming Thien's essays on compacts and vigorously defending and promoting pocket compacts as worthy of serious and even commercial usage. Enjoyed this message very much!

My favorite pocket zooms which is almost all of what I really need (and in the $50-$100 USD range) are: the tiny Canon S95 f2.0; Olympus XZ-1 f1.8; Panasonic LX3/LX5 f2; and the Ricoh GX100/200 f2.5 with the famous Ricoh ergonomics and one-handed street shooting snap focus capability. Almost all of these cameos have the older CCD sensor which gives you those super rich greens and reds and offer super close macro shots. If you want interchangeable lenses, get the Nikon 1 (body starting at $50) with the 1" sensor, terrific fast hybrid autofocus (phase detect and contrast detect) and 400fps/1200fps slow motion video. If you absolutely don't need 4k and the other bells and whistles, these great cameras are practically being given away. I've got about a dozen.

I currently own, or have owned all of the cameras you mention. I have always loved the rendering from CCD sensors. The Canon, Oly and Panasonic LX5 are all terrific, with the LX5 being my favorite. Good in low light, nice graininess for B&W street shooting. On par with the Ricoh GR digital 1, IMHO...with better ISO range and larger file size. Even the LX7, with its CMOS sensor, is a very nice camera. My first DSLR was a Nikon D40...6mp CCD sensor. That camera produced beautiful, natural images.

Refreshing to hear you talk up point and shoots…..I buy old interesting point and shoots, chuck them in a carry bag or pocket, and take pictures of beautiful things I see as I go about my day. They don’t cost the earth, so not a lot of downside if they fail on me, and I get to take lots of pics, which to my mind is the whole point of being a photographer. Recent purchases are a LUMIX LX5, Ricoh GXR with S10 module … image quality is perfectly fine enough

Luv your perspective on photography! I shoot with an Olympus em5 as I like the smaller size for street or travel. Funny as I was thinking on picking up a used sony rx 100 mk 3 as a second camera just to have with me 100% of the time. Great to see people that have similar perspective.

If I were forced to be reduced to a single camera, my LX100 mk1 would win hands down. The physical handling, menu systems and build drove me from Olympus to Panasonic for my M43 bodies. It is a beautiful, elegant machine.

  • @steveschnetzler5471

I agree. Every day I go biking with my 5 year old Lumix DC-ZS70 in my pocket, pants or coat, with it's 30x optical zoom and image size set to 5 (down from 20Mpixels). It has a EVF, I rarely use, but like when I need it. I take 20 or 30 photos of stuff of interest, people, stuff, animals as I ride around the streets of Cologne. This size camera I can hold and control with one hand, I can't do that with a smart phone. I organize them periodically, add a story, and post them on websites for friends. I have real camera's (g9 and s1r) for trips, but day to day small and with me wins every time. Some of my best pictures are the unexpected ones.

I took up photography after using my phone for a while and got sucked into CZcams's algorithm and professional YT advice. Ultimately I stopped enjoying photography cos the kit was too much of a hassle. I'm hoping simplifying will inspire me once more. Great video and advice

The brilliant idea of Oskar Barnark was to use inexpensive 35mm cinema film rolled into sealed cartridge* and exposed horizontally for photo reporters, becoming the de facto « full frame » 24/36mm format. Cinema 35mm film was exposed vertically, which is equivalent to today’s APSC format. I inherited a Leica IIIc with 3 optics from my father which was stolen from me in the 80’s. This broke my heart as that was basically all I inherited from him. (*) which prevent accidental exposure while loading/unloading the film.

I have three wonderful full frame Nikons, that I adore. In addition I also have a dozen film cameras that I still use regularly. However, in Oct 2019, when I took a quick trip, of only four days, across the pond to London, in order to see my favourite footy team play, I traveled only with my iphone and the Sony RX100V. I created wonderful images, which I regularly peruse to spark amazing memories. I do not regret, in any way, traveling super light for that excursion. Believe me, my top end Z with pro glass has a place in my heart that is difficult to displace, but as you often say “use case dictates “ …. That light dynamo did its job….and well (and so did the phone!)

  • @vorpled
    @vorpled Před 2 lety

Your way with words is impeccable and inspiring.
In large part, I think camera manufacturers have done this to themselves. There is nothing stopping them from incorporating the same technologies, image processing techniques, and levels of finesse in the user experience (how many cameras successfully and easily maintain and utilise a wifi connection? Allow images to be shared reliably and with ease? For example.)
They rested on their laurels, and didn’t move with the times. Image sensor and focusing tech, yes, 100%. Everything else? Nope.

  • @willbeckley184
    @willbeckley184 Před 3 lety +1

    Wonderful video as always.
I only wish you’d mentioned the LX100’s delightful multi-aspect sensor that allows for a 4:3, 3:2, or 16:9 aspect ratio, all without cropping (that is to say, none of which is a mere subset of the other). The 1:1 is a true subset of the 4:3, but otherwise the 4:3 is taller (has more vertical resolution) than the other formats, and the 16:9 is likewise wider. It is such a wonderful, photographer-centric innovation, and one that I wish other manufacturers would mimic. After all, in a mirrorless world unbound by either the constraints of a film format or a reflex viewing system, the only constraint is the image circle of your system’s least-forgiving lens. I love the classic 3:2 aspect ratio, no doubt, but I’d love the ability to get a camera in my system (Fuji) that could give me uncompromised options ranging from 16:9 to 1:1.

For light and somewhat small I use a 12 year old 12MP APSC Leica X1. Auto focus is slow. Battery life is terrible. However image quality is terrific. The X1 has a f2.8 36mm equivalent Leica lens made in Germany. Not a zoom lens as you stipulated in this video but a really nice stills-only camera. You can find these for around $400 or less. A great companion to my Q2 Mono.

Hi Hugh, thank you for yet another very informative and thought provoking topic. Amongst your other videos, I do like the 'I'm not doing it' video.
I think that the used market aspect is highly relevant. Amongst my cameras are a Sony A7ii, A7rII and a Panasonic GX9 - none of them are the latest versions but I'm more than happy with the images - what more do I need, especially when I can rent the 'specials'.
However, there is one aspect of your this video that, amongst others, I find intriguing. If the camera industry has moved, granted over some time, from large format to medium format to 35mm full frame. Does it imply that the future is Micro Four Thirds? Smaller, feature packed, and if they can improve the sensors, great image quality. Henri Cartier-Bresson may still have his say.
Thank you for your content. I look forward to your insights.

I also have my Xe1 paired with a Minolta 1.4 for family memories and it's absolutely stunning.
And obviously the story and the feelings with a photos is more important Than megapixel. At the end of the day it's just a tool.

I currently enjoy my OMD1M3, usually with the 17/1.8 which I'm growing to love, but I think sometimes I have too many lenses. Your Q2 video inspired me . I've always lusted after the colours and clarity of Leica lenses. I'm looking at something light and capable to take on a world trip in 2025 (UK, France, Iceland, maybe Alaska and maybe Machu Picchu, we'll see). The Q2 would fit the bill nicely, albeit whilst creating a bill of it's own....but the rx100/7 is so much more pocketable (and has a flash)....aaaarrrrrgh!

Hugh is right....buy used from a company like KEH or a local Camera Dealer. I bought a used Sony a7iii with less than 2600 shutter count and decided to spend the money on new glass. He has shown me that I should use my Canon Powershot G7X Mark II a bit more to see if it can do what I need it to do. After all, I am not a Pro, don't shoot video, capture landscape and cityscape, so, this compact camera would probably do what I need. I do shoot film on my Pentax K1000 also.

The LX100 II is cropping into the mFT sensor, so it is not equivalent to F5.6 at the long end.
In terms of dynamic range, my Canon G5X II has a better dynamic as my mFT gear. Also the noise is lower, because there is an base ISO of 125 instead of the 200 at mFT.
Inpurchased this little camera two years ago, it makes my mFT setting obsolete and I don’t even think about taking my A7rIII with me. It’s just gorgeous.

Think Cuba in 2016 [the authorities had issues with DSLR's] or our annual tandem bicycle tour in the San Juan Islands [no room for the DSLR kit]. Brilliantly said with great examples. I believe though that the laws of optics are here to stay, smart phones improvements or not, mirrorless cameras will also benefit, actually be at the forefront of these technological advances. For sports, let say car racing - have no clue why that one came up first - a Sony a1 Mk II with a 400mm f/2.8, or for a bird photographer specialized in warblers, will always need a 600mm f/4 with a converter, or maybe the lens will have become a f/2.8 by then, but as you so well said, for the majority of people, know your needs, the real ones, and buy accordingly. I have seen a Canon sensor development that people wouldn't believe, something that would make the one inside the a7S III look like blind in the dark, it was seeing at night like daylight with more megapixel you would dream of. With AI and face recognition that you would think that you're in a Matrix World. History often repeats itself, but not necessarily in a linear way, or exactly the same way.

I have a ton of photos taken with a Canon G9 (for which PureRAW has a profile, PureRAW will not work on photos taken with camera/lens combos or fixed-lens cameras for which there is no profile, and they have something like 6,000 profiles). I've been running them through PureRAW, and I would almost say I needn't have purchased a Sony A7R II (but I still enjoy my Sony and it's far more flexible with its battery of great Sigma lenses).
"Hughbonus" Hilarious! You should keep it.

I just bought a Sony RX100iii because I got annoyed that when Google updates their camera app, they sometimes take away control (white balance, for example) and move features around and stuff. The buttons on my Sony will never move and its firmware is pretty much done

Decisions decisions... Do I take the Canon G16, Canon S120, Lumix TZ90 ?
I generally packed just about everything that I own (compacts, mirrorless and dslrs), but take a majority of shots on the TZ90, G16 and my mobile ... hmmm
The S120 stays in my daily work to walk bag.

Hi Hugh. Have you ever reviewed Ricoh GR III? I've been searching on your channel and I think you haven't... Have you ever tried it? If yes, which is your opinion? If not, would it be possible that you review that camera?
I am a "compact" (understanding the compact term as non-interchangeable lens) cameras guy. I currently own a Sony RX10 IV and a Sony RX100 V, but I've been considering replacing the RX100 by a Ricoh GR III for a long time... So your opinion would be highly appreciated. Thanks a lot in advance.

Even though my main camera is a Sony a7riii, I still can’t let go of my trusty Panasonic GX9 and Pana-Leica primes (15, 25, 42.5). But I also have a new iPhone 12 Pro max, so despite the compact M43 form factor and magnificent glass, it’s becoming harder and harder to justify keeping so much extra gear. I really, really keep hoping all of the camera companies, especially Panasonic, will dig deeper into computational imagery and offer more software upgrades - it seems like such a waste of potential.

I really loved and hated this video!!
I loved it because I enjoy people using older cameras and still getting beautiful pictures!!
I hate this video because it always seems when a CZcams channel gives a good review on an older camera the used price goes up IF you can find the camera.
I will say cell phones or compact cameras dont draw attention from the public.
Best of luck in your photography journey!

suggestion for Budget Gourmets Episode 3, a camera that fits exactly in the middle of the point & shoots of today and the bigger yet still compact X-T2 of the first episode : the original Fuji X100. I can find it for about 200€ in France, incredible value for money.
While we're at it, you can also check the Fuji X10 and X20 (that have been completely forgotten despite having killer integrated lenses, and an optical viewfinder at a vrey small size & price, I can find an X10 for like 100€ second hand), as well as the X-T1 which is basically a much cheaper version of the X-T2 while retaining almost all the features that makes the X-T2 good
with that said, very enjoyable video !

I own and grab an image from time to time using a Fuji 140, a Sony 20 meg point and shoot 2/3 the size of a pack of cigarettes. My favorite, an Olympus 810. I bought a brand new Olympus TG 6. Not because it is water proof, shock resistant ad fit proof. No, it fits in my pocket and 12 megapixels is enough. And I have a screw-on telephoto too. But, I’m partial to Olympus so…
