glad to see your trying to appeal to the pro and anti round up crowd because no matter what side of the spectrum you tend to lean to the current reality is that there ARE thousands in holding who need homes. Hopefully in the future mustangs will be able to live on healthy ranges without roundups but for now I think we can all agree that all mustangs that have been round up deserve caring homes đđ

Sadly I live in Canada so I am not "allowed" to adopt a mustang without it staying in the states for a year. My goal is to get one of the ones who are over ten years old or a three striker because then they are not protected by the government of the USA and I can bring them to my lovely ranch here. Too bad the US and Canada couldn't make it so us adopters in Canada could adopt.

Also, there is a blm mustang in his early 20s where I take horse lessons, he's just the sweetest thing ever and one of my favorite horses. ive had the opportunity to meet several mustangs over the past couple years (even a wild one!) it seems so rewarding to be able to train one. mustangs are amazing!

Great video! We did not have halters put on our two girls. They have halters now because the trainer was able to work with them enough to put halters on and remove their tags.
My ZĂ€na is hesitant and reactive. Sheâs a challenge and Iâve gotten hurt. Fortunately, nothing broken. After a week together, weâve made some progress but Iâm not trying to rush it. My husbandâs mare Nyx is a little younger than mine and TIP trained. Both are expecting and that makes training more challenging on some days. They can be cranky. I remember being in the last part of my pregnancies and I wasnât always feeling social or comfortable. Slow and steady. Plus I still have assistance from our trainer if I need it. As a first time mustang adopter and mustang trainer; having an experienced trainer to call on is really important. Thank you for doing videos like these! You have been an inspiration for my mustang journey.
We wondered about the issue of a mare being pregnant. On the one hand, if delivery and everything went smoothly - bonus baby! (Who doesn't love foals?!) On the other hand, I wondered to what extent it might complicate things, particularly with timing in mind. If the mare was in the last trimester at time of adoption, could we navigate moods and have the mare so gentle that she could be assisted if there were any complications? Also, you'd lose a substantial period and continuity in training, perhaps regress substantially between delivery and weaning? And what level of protective aggression might a semi-tamed mustang with foal exhibit? I don't know... Personal preference for foals is a gentle, trained riding mare because a foal can get such a head start accompanying mare and rider on short trips around farm terrain.
@@jimmyyounger618 Not all mares up for adoption are necessarily bred. It depends on how long they have been away from any stallions. They usually have in the initial info for each horse say if you should assume the mare is bred because they do not test for pregnancy. We knew it was a risk, but planned for it to be a BOGO adoption lol. We fell in love with our girls and donât regret it. My husbandâs mare Nyx is already TIP trained coming from my friend who is a TIP trainer. She was keeping my mare ZĂ€na there while we had to get our panels replaced (long, stupid story). Nyx trained so fast that they showed up together with ZĂ€na having some training. Iâm training her myself and sheâs a challenge. Hesitant and reactive. Nyx calms her and Iâm hoping to have some good progress by the time any foals arrive. Praying they are all healthy. We have a vet established as well.
@@auntieliz930 After commenting, I was thinking... and this ties in with your mention of exposure to stallions... It would be good if the date of capture was posted on the pen tags at adoption events the same way that info is available in the online events. I wouldn't mind knowing the HMA they came from, either. They did say the mares at the event we attended might be bred, and a BOGO deal would be welcome to some, but not part of the plan for others. (I'm on the fence, but I'm pretty sure my gal would kick everybody's ass in the bidding if she was đŻcertain a standout mare was pregnant. đ) Off hand, I'm thinking if the date of capture was roughly 6 months or more prior to adoption, and you knew the date of capture, you'd probably be able to distinguish pregnant mares from open mares. Part of why I'd want to be certain one way or the other is because our pastures are regular old fescue with the endophyte issue for pregnant mares. That's not a deal breaker, just something we need to consider and adjust for 60 days ahead of anticipated delivery, along with vaccinations. (Influenza and tetanus in the last 3-6 weeks, and Equine Herpes Virus 1 and 4, although the first herpes shot should be at month 5. Needless to say, the advantages we can offer a captured pregnant mare over life in the wild is monumental. đ)

@@jimmyyounger618 Thank you! I know that sometimes they list the HMA on the lists attached to the pens. What I do know is that if they say the mares could be bred; then itâs safer to assume it. Except for adopting any weanling or yearling. Itâs pretty rare for a yearling to be bred. Nyx is three this year but had her first foal 3 months before the roundup. He was adopted after he was weaned in the same IA. We didnât think she was bred but surprise! Lol! ZĂ€na will be 5 in October and is a maiden mare. She was with her natal band until much closer to the roundup. Iâd say get to an adoption event as early as allowed to look at the horses and see if there are any details about HMA and gather dates. You could also ask someone working the event if they know that info or could look it up. Good luck with your journey!
@@auntieliz930 I'd forgotten but you're right! There weren't any details other than sex, age and state captured on the pen tags at the event we attended, but the details about HMA and date of capture for every tag number is somewhere there with the BLM folks. An adopter was reading these details to their friend when they came back with the paperwork for their horse. Going early, making a short list of favorites and asking the BLM folks for a look-up of these details is the perfect plan. And I don't doubt the BLM folks would be helpful. The handful we met were all capable and couldn't be nicer. Thanks for helping us come up with a plan!

Also, I didn't catch the name of the guy who explains the program and conducts the auction, here: @6:07 and @6:35 We took an overnight trip to the OK event for the experience and to better understand how all this works by meeting staff and experienced adopters. I got to speak with the gentleman after the intro and auction after they started loading. Great guy - so helpful and generous with his time that I wanted to send BLM a note of appreciation *BUT* I forgot to write down his name! If anyone knows him, please share so I can craft that letter and send it on it's way.

I have a mustang mare right now in training and let me tell yâall it is fun and rewarding but there are lots of times weâre I step out of the pen and cry because she has frustrated me so much. But she has made amazing progress.

My instructor adopted a mustang named sky and I watch her work with sky all the time and it is not like black beauty also sky is only 3 years old.
While their freedom has been "stolen", it keeps them safe. They can't starve to death, be shot, or anything else.

Thanks for another great video :) I have a question (sorry if itâs silly) but if someone is at a pint where theyâre truly ready to properly own their first horse, would you say itâs better to get one that has already been owned and with lots of experience, or to get a mustang and use the mostly positive reinforcement plan you have been using? I see pros and cons to both. Iâm guessing the already experienced horse is better, but I was curious. Thanks for reading and answering my question!

You have to arrange and pay the transportation yourself. Auctions donât do it for you.

Hey I work at a ranch and the property owner said that mustangs will alway be a little wild and have a âptsd like responseâ too certain objects. Obviously this isnât true, but I would like to know your opinion.
The property owner thinks this cause she has gentled One Mustang and obviously they are all the exact same.
This came up cause after I attended this very auction I inquired about the TIP challenge coming up an if I could keep the horse on the propertyâŠ

Well I obviously don't agree. Take Bob for example... you wouldn't know he had ever been wild. I do think some mustangs will have a harder time to adjust to domestic life and if you fly a helicopter right above their head I bet they would have a hard time with it too, but so would my arabian. I would take advice from trainers who have worked with or been around 10+ mustangs. They aren't for everyone - you have to be patient. Horses aren't for everyone either! For the same reason đ
If I were really interested in it, I might try to find another place to keep my TIP project. Someone's gotta be open to it đđ» Either way though, one day you'll be able to chase this dream. I know you will! Chin up!

Horrible how BLM is rounding up these beautiful horses. Leave them alone and stop the cattle conglomerates from destroying the lives of these gorgeous creatures. After purchase there isn't any followup that I have found. Some are sold for meat. The roundups are brutal to these horse communities. Males separated from their mares, mares separated from their babies. How would humans feel if dealt this blow? Leave these beautiful creatures alone and stop making decisions based on politics and those with economic interests driving the political policy. Please watch round up videos from individual photographers and animal rights activists. These photos will show you the true nature of this brutality.

Hon, wild mustangs are dying in the wild due to overpopulation and horse rescues canât take them because theyâre so many of them. Itâs either they get auctioned off or they literally die in the wild.
