    Lyrics
    I wish I knew how
It would feel to be free
    I wish I could break
    All the chains holding me
    I wish I could say
All the things that I should to say
Say 'em loud say 'em clear
For the whole round world to hear
    I wish I could share
All the love that's in my heart
    Remove all the bars
    That keep us apart
    I wish you could know
What it means to be me
    Then you'd see and agree
    Everyone should be free
    I wish I could give
    All I'm longin' to give
    I wish I could live
    Like I'm longin' to live
    I wish I could do
All the things that I can do
    Though I'm way overdue
    I'd be starting anew.
I wish I could be like a bird in the sky
    How sweet it would be
If I found out I could fly
    I'd soar to the sun
And look down at the sea
And I sing 'cause I know

This is a rare snapshot of the true potential of a humans ability to connect fully with themselves in the moment. There is a tangible experience at 3.40 when she actually acknowledges it and says ‘the spirit’s moving now’. She is completely at one with her breath, the piano, her mind, the room. She absolutely goes at that feeling, brave as fuck and completely into herself. It very might be one of the most important videos on the CZcams

Read your comment again and realise that you're talking about a Black woman born in 1930s America. You're not smart. Her identity as a Black woman and the struggles she has faced due to that are interwoven into music. Get out of here with that pseudo-deep nonsense. What's next? You don't see colour?

But I think it also had to do with her knowledge that there was more to music than even the deepest beauties of the European Classical repertoire. It was why, during the period of her most concentrated studies along these lines, she started playing nightclubs and offering audiences a wholly different side of her sensibility; and not by way of selling out, but as much on her terms as any artist, even established ones, could muster back then.

@@Tasutpen She played at nightclubs and jazz venues because she couldn't afford to eat otherwise and wasn't able to make money playing classical gigs because of her race. She also stated multiple times that she deeply hated having to be pulled away from her true passion of classical music purely because of her race, don't romanticize her struggle. The whole reason we know her as Nina Simone and not Eunice Waymon is because she went by a pseudonym while performing because she was ashamed to have to be singing at bars to get by, and just so happened to get famous off that genre and pseudonym.

This song sings my soul. Those raised by narcissists feel the burden of never truly being free from emotional turmoil of knowing their parents aren’t capable of love. “I wish I could break all the things that bind us apart” ....and now I “sing because I know what it means to be free” now I have a family of my own, I can’t find justice in how I was treated, but I find peace in knowing I broke the cycle. My child will be nurtured and supported in every way. I have no family other than my husband and child but I’m free to move anywhere in the country or out of it.

    LYRICS:
I wish I knew how it would feel to be free
I wish I could break all the chains of steel binding me
I wish I could say all the things that I can say when I'm relaxed
    I'm restarting anew
I wish I could be like a bird in the sky (don't leave me)
How sweet it would be to find that I could fly
I'd soar to the sun and look down at the sea
Then I'd sing because I know how it feels to be free
Then I'd sing because I know how it feels to be free
I wish I could share all the love that's in my heart
I wish I could break all things that bind us apart
I wish you could know what it means to be me
    And you'd see, you'd agree
everybody should be free (because if we ain't we're murderers)
I wish I could be like a bird in the sky
How sweet it would be if I could find that I could fly
I'd soar to the sun, look down at the sea
Man, I know, yes I know
Oh yeah, the spirit is moving now
    [humming]
I know, got news for you, I already know
Jonathan Livingston Seagull ain't got nothing on me
    Free, free, free, free
I'm free, and I know it
    Don't wanna be a
    And I show it
    But I'm still free
And believe in me, it's alright
    And I'd sing, sing, sing
    Cause I would know
    I already know
    I already know
    I found out
    how it feels
    not to be chained
    to anything
    to any race
    to any faith

    Glad you where here Nina.

Thanks for reading the comment. I'm very old, and only knew about singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday; whom my family adored along with the great jazz groups from Ellington to Basie and Miles. For some reason, we never heard of Nina, an artist bridging the gap between those artists and the Mayfield's and Stevie's and Prince's of later times. I was glad to see your post get so many views and comments!

Happy birthday to Nina Simone who would've celebrated her 85th birthday today, the legendary performer who sang a mix of jazz, blues and folk music in the 1950's and '60s, later enjoying a career resurgence in the '80s, was also staunch Civil Rights activist

in 1993 when The Point of No Return came out heavily featuring her music, it brought her to a new generation of fans. I include myself in this group. I started buying her albums and CDs. I was traveling to Southern California in the summer of 2001 to visit family and I found out that she was playing the Greek Theater in Los Angeles. Being able to see her live less than two years before her death is one of the highlights of my life.

LagiNaLangAko23 yes our history is still very fresh and there are still men and woman alive who suffered absolute oppression and some of us brush that aside, it’s cold tbh. To be considered a second class citizen at all would be terrible... I feel for those folks but I am honestly proud of them more than anything especially those who fought for their freedom to express and show that they are also human. Rip to those who where and are murdered because of skin color and ideologies. Rip...
