Thanks for the vid. Am all in favor of white elastomeric roof paint directly on conventional pitched asphalt shingle roofs. It works well. I painted Home Depot Henry brand/Lowes Black Jack brand (several other brands exist) white roof paint with a conventional 9" paint roller on a stick, least expensive grade directly on my conventional asphalt shingle roof in 2008. Applied about 4 coats to completely seal any gaps, especially where one shingle overlaps atop its downhill neighbor shingle. Used aluminum tape to seal bigger than 1/4" gaps or wherever bolstering needed, such as a protrusion from the roof or where a nailhead appears atop the shingle layer around the perimeter of the roof every 1-2 feet or so, then painted over the aluminum tape with white roof paint. In 2017, 9 years later, it's still going strong. Much cheaper than a reroof, saves on cooling bills, seals leaks and stops new leaks. Also painted the drip lip around the perimeter of the roof so precipitation touches nothing but white roof paint til it hits the ground. Don't like white? Paint over the white with the exterior grade paint of your choice of color, including the same color as your old shingles if you prefer. As a test, painted an inconspicuous piece of the roof with the date in mid 2015 in a dark color. In 2017, it looks like it was painted on yesterday, with no visible wear. On the elastomeric white roof paint can label, it may say don't apply on shingles. Ignore this if your asphalt shingles are pitched conventional or pitched rolled and aged over 30 days. The white roof paint adheres very well when painted directly on the aged shingles.

Kevin Pullman I'm a journeyman roofer with 4 decades experience roofing sloped residential roofing as well as flat commercial & industrial roofing ,I agree with every application method you used with exception of 1 ,which is when a " nail pop " is popped up above a shingle, jail pops are common on roofs installed with air nailers, to effect a professional repair pull the jail with a flat bar ,then use the flat bar to lift up the shingle with a hole in it ,once lifted you'll see a hole straight thru your roof ,this is where you take a metal flash card and slide it under the shingle and over the hole thru the roof ,then place just a dab of polyurethane caulk or black jack caulk tube tar over the nail hole from the bottom side of the shingle tab ,then run a light head of black jack around the outer edges of the shingle tab so when you push it down it's glued to the roof ,the way you did it with aluminum tape worked and hasn't failed but it can ,even if you don't want to mess around sliding flash cards under jail holes you still want to always remove the nail, if the shingle is too old to lift up ,or is baked together then just use your paint brush and rub a good glob of Henreys coating into the hole and double coat that tab ,Henreys " Cool White " elastomeric roof coating is awesome and I use the hell out of it on my rental homes ,we currently own 62 rental homes in good middle class neighborhoods where an ugly roof will drive gold tenants away ,on homes where a white shingle roof would look appropriate we just use the Henreys cool white ,but on homes where a white roof would look like hell I use the Terra Cotta or Brown colors Home Depot will special order ,Henreys will also color match your homes paint scheme and make a custom color batch for you & ship it to Home Depot ,I've had Henerys make us up an entire pallet of Dark Bronze for the condo complex we own where the roofs are half standing seam metal roofs and half shingles, the metal roofs are dark bronze so we had to have the custom color ,we coated those roofs 6 yrs ago this June and not 1 single roof leak or discoloring of the material ,I agree with you that Henerys roof coatings are exceptionally good products ,the only roof coating I've used that's better quality than Henerys is made by the Garland Company called White Knight but it's over $200 for a 5 gallon pail and also requires a expensive primer .
The best way I've found to make Henerys last the longest is we use a paste brush to coat all the shingle weeps " spaces between 3 tabs " and we also brush coat the long runs where the edge of the shingles overlap the previous course ,once that's done we use 12 inch wide thick bristle push Brooms to apply the coating ,I avoid using sprayers because the coating then just lays on top vs being rubbed into the granules ,we always 2 coat every roof we use Henerys on so for the final coat we use wool paint rollers on heavy duty frames ,anybody who tells you that Henerys roof coatings are junk is an idiot, I'm retired from professional roofing being I'm 72 yrs old but before I retired my company used hundreds of thousands of gallons of Henerys coatings on Ford Motors cap sheet flat roofs, public school systems with sloped cap sheet roofs and metal panel roofs ,the only times I've seen Henerys not work excellent is when the roof surface wasn't properly cleaned or primed .

Thank you for the incredibly useful comment about your experience coating shingle roof. Based on your information, I decided to coat my roof with cheaper elastomeric coating instead of expensive silicone coating like Henry tropicool. I hope elastomeric coating can do good job of keeping rain out. Based on people who gave very bad feed back on home depot elastomeric coating, it looks like elastomeric coating takes long time to dry/cure and should not be exposed to rain for weeks after painting, as it can be washed away by rain before it can fully cure. Henry does have product targeting specifically asphalt roof - "roof saver 812" and "shingle guard 612" which come in 0.9 gallon pails (no 5 gallon bucket available). What turned me off from these product was claim that 0.9 gallon can cover 200 sq feet. Which seem wildly optimistic. Also product weight varied quite a bit when I took the scale to Home depot and weighted various "roof saver" cans.. Anywhere from 7.5 lbs to 9.5 lbs with no consistency which indicate Henry is doing very poor job of production quality control, at least for their asphalt shingle coating products.

@@petersawiris933 Actually you make a good point, moisture could be an issue under shingles and despite what the other so-called “expert” said, shingle systems can and do breathe, albeit only a small amount and I think what he's trying to say is that they are not necessarily designed to do so. Regardless I propose that in extreme scenarios it could be an issue however there are ways to get around this and I would say that in drier climates this probably is not an issue. I think it's probably fine as long as you do not live in an extremely wet environment and you have good attic ventilation. I have a client with a shingle roof and he has been coating it since 1958 as far as I know he has not had any mold or issues but this is Los Angeles. as far as my credentials I am a third generation certified master roofer, a state licensed roofing contractor and I've been running a roofing company with a very good reputation for decades.

if this is not for flat roofs, what do you recommend for flat roof sections over patios that use the asphalt roll? It's about 15' wide by maybe 30 foot long. It's 23 years old and doesn't leak but it's lost most of it's little rocks and is blistering in a few spots. Hoping to get a couple more years out of it before replacing.

Have you read the instructions/label of this product? Is to preserve the roof NOT to fix it. If you have a leaky roof, you need to fix it first and then do the coating. Also if your roof is old and the shingles are done, you'll need to do the roof again. I know it is a bummer, but house comes with cost ;)

There’s a lot of stupid people out there. If you have a leaky old roof than replace it. This isn’t for fixing old leaky roofs. If you have a good roof and just want to change the color so it looks better with your house paint then here’s the solution. Roofers will always want you to spend $15-$30k to replace a good roof just to change the color.

Never under any circumstances and I mean never should you coat a shingle roof. This is completely insane to even suggest to people. This will create tens of thousands of water traps and make leaks appear throughout the entire roof. The shingles repaired around the chimney were not even staggered. That is just absolutely the worst way to install shingles as the purpose of the proper installation is to lap all shingle in a 6" weaved pattern to prevent water intrusion. There is no way in the world that a coating would seal a non-staggered shingle joint. That just is scientifically impossible. Those shingles appeared to have 6 or more years left to them depending on the environment so why would you even consider coating them and destroying them? You can not in no way long term prevent water from getting under the coating and it's all down hill from there. Every time I have seen any attempt to coat shingles it has failed miserably and I have seen many of them. It is my professional opinion suggested by this video that Techniseal does not have a good understanding of how coatings work and/or fail miserably.
