- In this video we are machining centre plates for the wheel rims on a big John Deere 9570R Tractor. The plates don’t fit into the centre of the wheel hub so we are machining to size and machining a radius for weld prep. We have four to do and the customer needs them in a hurry so was a job we had to get in and just get it done.

It's always a pleasure to see your videos. The machining is superb, but it's the outtakes that keeps me coming back every time.
The part of the video where the part looks like it is almost standing still but chips still coming off the tool was cool.

Were those centers John Deere parts or were they fabbed locally? Nicely done.
Knowing John Deere's prices and wait times on parts, this was probably the most cost effective and time saving option.
Also a better job and customer service.
Iv seen lots of there jd rims fail the pretty much snap off combines when loaded u know its a problem when local dealers have new rims in stock

Tell me about it. The moisture farmers have had it the absolute worst. Vaporator parts are in short supply, good droids are nearly impossible to find, and Mos Eisley space port is nothing but a wretched hive of scum and villainy.

I've learned more from your videos then half of a semester of night welding classes. Please keep them longer and as indepth as possible your a natural teacher.
I love the endings. When you show the bloopers. It shows that you are human. No one is perfect although, when it comes to machining, you are damn close to perfect.
The outtakes have become a real feature of our channel now and will keep them coming

Great to watch as always! Seeing that tractor reminds me of a funny story from my days in the Diesel Engine business! I was the Warranty Engineer for Deutz USA (for 8 years) back in the '80s. We were the engine part of it. A sister company was Deutz-Allis that made tractors and combines and so on (our engines of course). One day one of their reps came by with a brochure for a new tractor model that they were VERY proud of. So we're sitting at the conference table. Our Chief Engineer (my Boss), couple other of our guys, and the DA rep. I took one look at the cover and started laughing! They are all giving me this WTF look and I say: "What's wrong with this picture?" Blank looks. I said: "Any farmer looks at this and he'll wonder what else we got backwards!" DA guy asks: "What's backwards?" I said: "Nobody else sees it?" "No". I said: "I'm sure they just put the machine together for the photo shoot but the drive tires are on the wrong side! Chevrons go so the tires dig in the mud, pushing it to the outside. Other way round they load up and you're stuck!" Guy asked how the F I knew that and I told him my Grandpa was a farmer and taught me to drive a tractor when I was about ten... ;)
Though ita not uncommon, to see tractors here in germany with the drivewheels on backwards...
This is done to reduce tire wear, when doing roadtransport with the tractor.

Plus the out takes at the end of each video. Just a quick shout-out for another youtube channel that has a "shop dog": Precision Transmission in Amarillo, Texas . "Annie" is the shop dog there, just more laid back than Homey, however she does get the fanmail like Homey does. Just like C.E.E. it's a family run shop, no outside help. Also the owner has a racecar he drives the 1/4 mile track with around Texas on the weekends.

11:28 What a cool shot! It's neat to see the lathe slowing down slightly when it's under load and losing sync with the output frame rate.
Someone please please send them better camera/lens - I mean nowadays this is the best machining channel, but the picture quality is sometimes not the best :/

I've done a few of these myself, but have never fitted them like that.
I've always made new centers from scratch, so that they'll lay flat on top of the center in the new rim. That way I figured they run true when fitted to the tractor.
And like you said, they don't do 100km/t, so a little run out is OK.

so I have a 1949 chevy 2-ton which has split rims (widow makers) I'm in the Arizona (USA) and have been trying to get/find replacement rims for awhile now with the correct center and modern rim. This would allow me to use modern tires as well.
Every tire/rim place has told me forget it you won't find them, this truck is an antique and goes 40-45 MPH tops.
I'm going to show this video to a local shop to see if I can transplant my centers into newer style rims. Thanks for the idea, and great video's.

I like how the questions you get (and answer at the beginning) are always, "Why doesn't the customer just buy a new one or get a different part?" And the answer is always, I mean always, "money."
These machines are money-earners, not garage-kept show pieces. If they aren't in the field earning money they are in the shop costing money. And, Australia is a long way away from, well, anywhere that parts for industrial machines are made. Even if you could order the part from, say, Singapore or Japan or even mainland China, it's not like someone in London ordering a part from Hamburg. It's a lot of shipping from anywhere to the East Coast of Oz. And, in the end, the part you could order is made by a different guy who would more or less have to do exactly what Kurtis is doing but charging twice the price.
So, my point is, in business the answer to every question is "money." It's money over the long-run and minimizing the money you spend over the short-run.
You're absolutely spot on. It's interesting how many ask "isn't it cheaper to buy a new one" I forget Australia is a long way from other places and costs a lot more to get parts from overseas
Not only that, but everyone knows JD and CAT charge at least 250% more for yellow paint :P
That button insert created really lethal looking snare. It gave me goosebumps just by looking at the video.

Super singles ( sometimes called forestry tyres) used a lot on tank sinking ect. Where the tractor isn’t on level ground , a lot less flats and more traction.👍

Karen - COOL how you matched shutter speed to the lathe's rotation, to "stop" the insert from turning.
You almost did too much effort into this one 😂.
Between the stamped parts, welded rim, sloppy bolt holes and the tire beeing out of whack even new, few milimeters dont matter much as long things are properly welded.

the 12 mm button insert is my favorite....i always cheer like a maniac when the 12 mm button insert comes off the bench and into the game....it throws off shavings like Christmas decorations

10:00 I had a 1978 GMC Step Side .. wth tires off an 18 Wheeler on it :) 42" tall and 8 " Wide, nice Lug tread.
I made the wheel rims by welding 1/2" plate steel .. in the centre of Split Rims, then drilled the bolt pattern out on a milling machine :)
It was easy indexing the bolt holes as I used 8 Lug Rims :)
