Note: You do not have to lay them on their side if they are short plants. Just plant them to their first leaves (you can remove a few of the bottom leaves if you want.
The tomato I planted in the video is called a Thai Pink Egg. It is a beautiful little tomato with light pink flesh and the skin resembles a pink pearl. Very pretty and mild acid.

Very well informed video. I always look forward to hearing your step by step process and the great tips you give.
Old time pottery is the best! Looking forward to our home grown tomatoes this year!
Thank you so much for this video. I am just starting to put my soil in my square foot garden. This is so helpful.
This is how I remember indeterminate versus determinate. The “I” is long and tall and the “D” is short and squat.
Thank for demonstrating exactly how to place the plant into the garden bed! Brilliant!
Glad it was helpful!
This vid was exactly what I was looking for. Thx 😊
good afternoon RG !! thanks for sharing this information and advice on how to grow some tomatoes as part of a square foot garden !! love it love it love it !! thanks for sharing and happy gardening !! I got three or four of the arches and I us a lot of the obelisk's !!
Even though this video is a few years old, it's still relevant. Thanks for the tips. Also, looked like a Cutco Cutlery knife you cut your tomato with. We have and love our Cutco.
Saying hello from Zone 9a in Houston, TX. I love listening to your videos because your accent is so soothing!! (And the information is wonderful, too!)
Thank you!
I love ur soi!!
Hello, ma'am! New subbie here enjoying your videos. Thanks for sharing your tips and tricks with us! I'm more confident now in trying to plant my cilantro from seed and I think they're growing better as direct sows. My first try was a fail and the sprouts became too leggy. Also, I'm on the quest to find coarse vermiculite locally. lol! The end of the video was so neat to see the progression of your garden even through the seasons. I love it!! Be blessed!
Wonderful information provided! Thank you so much.
Thank you so much!
Excellent presentation; thank you.
Wonderful! Glad it helped. Happy Gardening!
Love the video! I just made a box with a weed barrier as well. I didn't lay it down on its side. Maybe I'll dig and redo thanks!
I love the videos! Keep up the good work!!!
Thank you so much!
Thanks for another great video. I saw another video where they laid the tomato sideways a day or two prior to planting and the plant turned up to the sun. Just thought I would share, it seemed like a good idea. God Bless.
Yes, I do it that way sometimes too. This plant was flexible so it was easy to turn the tip up a bit. However, had it been more rigid, I would have just left it on it's side and it would grow straight up towards the sun.
hank you so much for this video and info
Thank you for your great videos. You saved me some frustration with the determinate vs indeterminate, as that was something I did not know. We are trying our SFG again, so every little bit helps.
The determinate grow better in the SFG for sure. Thanks so much, Happy Gardening!
Great info. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent video!
Thank you so much! Happy Gardening!
Very clear and succinct video. Exactly what I needed to know/see regarding how to grow the indeterminate tomatoes up my trellis. I was confused because they don't have tendrils like the squash and melons. I was also very pleased to see your soil! I think I haven't been mixing mine to be "loose" enough even though I've tried diligently to go by the 1/3, 1/3, 1/3 proportions of mel's mix.
On your indeterminant tomoatoes, do you remove the suckers that grow in the V between a stem growing off the main stalk and the main stalk? Thanks!
Love that acccent. lady...ta for the ideas. The only thing stopping us is our lack of imagination, and those looking on who are negative, and jealous because we are doing something they can't do..but they too could, if they tried. I just don't listen to people like that. If an idea can be done being smarter, instead of working harder, to achieve the same result, you can guess it ain't gonna be the hard working ideas...that is so old fashioned.
I have two of the trellis’ like that. I bought mine at Hobby Lobby or JoAnn fabric store in the wedding department. I think they were around $40 but with their 40% off coupon they are pretty cheap. I keep mine up year around with white lights. I add a small Christmas tree under it at Christmas time!
How pretty! Thanks for letting me know. I think they are the best! I just installed 2 more. I had no idea they were available at JoAnn and Hobby Lobby. I'll have to let my other subscribers know where else they can find them.
when my daughter was little, she would eat tomatoes like that like an apple. so salt just washed off under the hose. 💗 I'm in central Florida and have my beefsteak seedlings going right now.
Wonderful! I can hardly wait to start my peppers and tomatoes.
I will do similar with cherry tomatoes 👍
VERY GOOD VIDEO MY FRIEND. I AM HERE IN NORTHERN GEORGIA AND YOUR INFORMATION IS HANDY FOR ME. I WILL SAY TO MY FRIENDS TO PEEK A LOOK AT TODAY'S VIDEO. ....I AM A SINNER SAVED BY GRACE.
as am I ..... another unworthy wretch that has been shown GRACE
I am really enjoying all of your square foot garden videos. Do you worry about cross pollinating by planting more than one variety of tomato in a square foot garden?
Hi,
No as I rarely grow the same variety types of tomatoes. However, if I happen to grow two types of, let's say, potato leaf, then i "bag the blossoms" to keep them from crossing. I will try to do a video on it next growing season. Thanks so much for watching.
Thanks for this video. I was thinking that maybe a cattle panel might work for a trellis. It seems to made of type of heavy duty fence wire and can bend to form the trellis. Just a thought. I saw someone use it to make a small green house. Anyway, I always enjoy your videos, they are very helpful.
Many people use cattle panels for tomato trellises. They are too cumbersome for me and I like the look of the arches better through my garden - I suppose it is just a matter of taste. :)
interesting. had to see the part where u plant the tomato 2x. I was like huh??! how is that done, won't it break. very detailed.
Very carefully, or yes, it could break. The smaller tomato plants are easier to plant and do not require laying it on the side.
What kind of netting do you use for the tomatoes???
How many tomato plants do you plant per box or next to eachother? I read only 4 per 4x4 box but I have tons of plants this year and don’t know how to plant them all 😢
One per square, best on the north side of your bed so it won't shade your other pkants. Get indetetminate type.
Interesting. How long are the roots when you remove it?
They take up almost the entire square, but I am able to shake much of the soil from the roots back into the beds.
Thanks! Its so hard to imagine a tomato plant growing in a few inches of soil.
How do you keep birds from tomatoes?
fruit
4:06 “dee-ah-wah” ?
Did You make it with woodprix?
Did I see garlic on the tomato vine?
Good eye! Well, it was a tomato covered with a stocking to keep the bugs and birds off of it. LOL it looks like a big bulb of elephant garlic or something though.... :)
I went into more detail how I protect my tomatoes from pests in this video: czcams.com/video/SrRaX1xu_9I/video.html
You gave me an idea, maybe I should try hanging garlic in the garden to keep the pests away - ha, (it is suppose to work for vampires !)
Rainbow Gardens Lol, we have to keep those vampires out of the garden somehow! I hope the garlic works on zombies, too, we have a lot of them in California. All kidding aside, I will start using old socks (Hoping to keep the rats away). They ate so many tomatoes last year. Now this year my problem is blossom drop like crazy. Always somethin!
T Miller Nice work
When I lived in Florida, it seemed when the temperatures heated up and began staying high and hot most of the day, my tomato blossoms would drop but the peppers loved the hot days.
Nice
Tomatoes are fruits
No disrespect or anything but isn't a Tomato a Fruit? Also, great video!
It is but would you put it in a fruit salad?
Tomato... It's a FRUIT. Not a VEGETABLE
I was under the impression that soil depth for tomatoes was the minimum of 12 to 14"?
Am a wrong for Roma tomatoes?
You Can grow any kind of tomatoes in 6 inches of soil If you follow the SFG Instructions. Soil blend is key.
