    When planting my seedsInstead of plastic cups, I use toilet paper rolls on the inner cup. This way I plant the tp roll with the plant and it acts as a collar to the plant for protection until it decomposes.

    You can make an easy bug remover. Use 1 tablespoon of dishsoap, one tablespoon of salt, one tablespoon of saladoil, mix it together and add 1 liter of water. Try it on each plant on a small leave before, to check if the can handle it. But a small spray on a lot of pests, will remove them without poisoning your food. It works also on eggs...

    Great video! I just started my container garden this year and have grown my cucumbers from seed. They did great during germination, transplanted them into yogurt cups and they were still doing great until last week I noticed some of them were wilting over and it looked like the stems were “strangling “ themselves right at the soil level. Any idea what could had happened. Most of those that did this were not big enough to need support yet.

  • @BecDoesRandomStuff
    @BecDoesRandomStuff Před 5 lety

    Very nice video thank you. I would like to share my experience with separating my seedlings. I am a complete newbie gardener and therefore had no idea what I was doing haha I planted about 8 cucumber seeds into quite a small pot to start them. I didn't know they would grow into giants in less than 2 weeks! Yes they were leggy but strong stems. Still with no idea what I was doing, I carefully tipped the whole lot out onto my work surface and proceeded to re pot each one into their own solo cups. In about a week they were all super happy and healthy and I realised I had no room to put them all. I kept 4, thinking at least 2 would probably die but at least I would have something left..... planted 4 out into my garden. I now have 3 giant cucumber vines grabbing onto everything they can! So maybe I just accidentally picked up cuckes with super tough root systems lol

      @RainbowGardens  Před 5 lety

      Thanks! That's what mine did too, but they never got much bigger once the summer heat set in. They matured to have about 7 huge leaves but then dwindled away. It could be because I don't live at the garden where I planted them and perhaps, they did not get enough water from natural rainfall. Keep us updated. :)

    When I dont go from seed I head over to home depot and get the cucumber and okra and even zuchini in the cups you had mentioned, they come like 4 or 5 in the cup, for me, the key to seperating them and keeping them alive is not bearing the roots, being surgical and leaving some soil attached to the roots, immediatly planting them, then hitting them for 2x a day for about week with 2 3 1 fish and kelp, I foliar feed and water,,,with this technique within 3hrs I have them standing straight up looking great,,,,you are right its not easy to keep alive, but I have keep all types of veggies alive using this technique, just something I found with trial and error, NICE VIDEO :)

      I make my beds with Mel's Mix. But after year or so, I either refresh the entire bed with the mix, or just add a little to the square, especially for my summer veggies like peppers and cucumbers. It is expensive at the home improvement stores but I get 4 cubic feet at the special nursery or online for around $30 - $35. Here is a video where I reviewed it in depth: czcams.com/video/EGYg7Ia80MM/video.html

    when doing a square foot garden, can you plant something in every square?

    • @RainbowGardens
      @RainbowGardens  Před 5 lety

      Yes, the plant spacing is in the book. For example, in a 4' x 4' bed, you would have 16 squares. In one square, you could plant 16 carrots, 2 cucumbers in another, 9 bush bean plants in a square, one tomato plant per square ( i usually plant about 3 tomato plants per 4x4), and much more! You can grow a lot in one 4 x 4 bed.
