- Today's long form discussion is all about BUSINESS. When does a band become a business? What affect does that have on the music, or they way you operate as an artist. What do you even do? Well, today's podcast is all about that. Alongside my producer Jenny May Finn,I talk about my experience as a band that also requires to be a business. Let me know what you think of it, or if you have any questions.

Thanks for adding the Belfast gig 'Awkins!💥
amazing how Jenny started out as a shy person and now she’s a hilarious legend 😂
On the top of "sh*t getting real" I feel I owe The Darkness a thank you.
Last week I found out that my nan died, then a day later my auntie died and between that I was told I had to have bowel resection surgery in 4 weeks. It was the worst week of my life. A few days before that news my partner had surprised me with tickets as an early bday present to see you guys and Guns N Roses. You were both my absolute favourite bands growing up and still are now. We weren't sure whether to go, but my family pushed us to go to try and find some relief from everything and I'm so glad we did. You were absolutely sensational, my only complaint is that you weren't on the stage long enough. So thank you for turning a terrible week around, and healing a fraction of my very broken heart ❤
That's a lot to deal with at once. Fingers crossed all goes well with your surgery.
Fuck! That was not a good week for you and I’m sincerely hoping that this week is better - music heals! Best of luck with your surgery ❤
'When we were successful'... I think you still are, maybe not on such a large scale anymore, but you still are successful imho. 🙂
I just introduced my kids to the Darkness and they are super fans already, here's to a revival!
In my opinion if you’re a musician and you can make living being able to do what you want....that is success.
Agree
There are no more record sales, just streaming and constant touring.
I could listen to this man talk about anything forever. I find these videos incredibly calming for some reason. It's a positive thing and a palette cleanser from all the negative news lately.
Jenny has started on her way to singing the theme tune!
I 100% agree with Jenny May. Ticket prices used to be affordable. There's no justification to be charging hundreds of dollars for a show.
Love your chats.
There was a government survey of UK musicians a few years ago that found more than a third of musicians reported earnings of £5000 or less from music and nearly half earned less than £10000. Music mechanising is now a growing multi-billion dollar business globally, but the BBC reported a few years ago that venues can take up to 20-25% of merchandising sales from touring musicians in Britain. Likely means British musicians need to create their own online shops to maximise merchandising profits.
Get better soon, Jenny! If it makes you feel any better, you look fabulous and don't have puffy eyes
Does an artist become disheartened when they see their creativity becomes a 'business'?
Absolutely brilliant podcast yet again. Especially enjoy when the conversation goes off on a tangent xx
very interesting, would love to have another episode with more on the topic of business in the music trade!
Get well soon, Jenny! 💖🥰
Completely understand the issue with Taylor Swift & the likes. There’s definitely a point at which ticket prices cross the line of supporting your favourite artists in return for a kick ass show to charging extortionate prices because you’re a superstar and you can. I think that crossing that line can show the artist’s true colours and how little their fans and the music matters to them in relation to their remunerations. When avarice outweighs artistry, your soul will surely suffer.
Ps. Yes please! More of the business episodes! It’s truly fascinating because it’s something I’ve never really given any thought to and it’s like catching a glimpse into a whole new world. 🥰 PS. Loving the hairstyle, Justin! 🥰
🦅🤓…
Please do more videos on the business side of music!! Loved the video. Fascinating insight about your musical hero playing a $500 guitar and the vip buying it for $5K. I can afford that luxury but I would never drop the $$ if the opportunity presented itself. I’ll support artists but there’s a line I won’t cross & that includes ticket sales. Great job Justin!
I really like these conversations you and Jenny
Have been having well done
Justin, Aussie tour dates please!! Patiently waiting!!! You guys were just fucking amazing last year! One of the best live rock shows I’ve ever been to🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼

Monday mornings are so much better now I watch jussy for an hour to start the week! ❤
I was watching Bargain hunt today and who should be on there...Mr J. Hawkins and F.Poullaun.
Totally fascinating. Great to hear your insight into the music business, along with the way you both bounce off of each other..Definitely one of the best Channels on YT..( great news about the tour too) ❤
Really enjoyed this chat. Great insight into the workings of a band. Best episode yet. Well done Jenny with feeding the questions and adding her take.
My new favourite weekly therapy, Justin and Jenny May Finn
DUDE! The Sistine Chapel was totally a commission gig!
Listen to Jenny!
Yeah, from what I remember reading, it was a little of both. Some patrons gave without any requests for specific results; just wanted to show their support, while others very much expected things to be done a certain way. I know most artists had to take “jobs/commissions” off and on just to be able to have a chance to do the pieces they really wanted to do.
A handful of actors do that today without any regrets. They willingly take on big $ movies even if they think they might be shit, just so they can continue to make the indy films or do the stage work that they love.
Really enjoyed that, thanks. Made me smile loads and was interesting. Hoping Jenny is feeling better already. 🙂
I very much enjoyed all of this discussion. If this was Jenny’s idea - good on ya!
The real star of the show, however, is how much you two adore each other. Keeps a grin on one’s face all the way through.
I really love how you broach these topics that most musicians don’t think about prior to jumping into their music careers. I especially love how you and Jenny May can conversationally cover things that can be confusing but you make them make sense. I truly feel like I gain some valuable insight each time I stumble across one of your long form videos. Just brilliant.
Love listening to you two chat- whatever the subject, it's always interesting, funny and insightful. Love it when you are both having a laugh about stuff - totally my kind of humour!
Jenny May Finn is magic... Sick or no sick, she works: the lucidity of her inquiry is precious. And the eyes: they are the mirror of the soul in her case, so she makes up for Justin's charming alas corrupt, flawed rock'n'roll heart...
Really great episode; good points raised & discussed on a range of related topics (and one or two non-related topics!) - more of this please. Look forward to the publishing episode. Thanks. 😎
Really enjoyed this! Would love to hear more talks and discussions on the business behind the music and being in a band. Hope you get to do more! Also feel that Jenny really contributed to the discussion and would like to see more of her featured in discussions too!
Loved this episode, a definite yes from me for more business related podcasts. Never thought what I'd consider to be a dry topic could be so interesting!
The episode has been very interesting. I completely agree with Jenny about the high prices of some shows.
Thank u Justin and Jenny, you do a good job and stuff.
Replying to the question if we like this subject or not to go on exploring into it. I personally like all your conversations. The podcast is amusing in general, and i prefer to you surprised me every week.
Much love!
Same for when I started my own cabinet shop. Things went from making cool stuff to making less cool stuff for the masses
I like the behind the scenes stuff that we get to see these days. For me there's been a subtle change in the way I think about my favorite musicians from putting them on a mythical pedestal as 'artists' to seeing them more like brilliantly skilled crafts people. It makes me more likely to want to fork out for a vip ticket as well, because I'm not just meeting a 'famous' person, I'm meeting someone with an incredible skill, and getting to see just a little bit how they prepare to do that thing. Heck, I'm a jeweller and there are plenty of folks in my industry charging people similar prices to basically come and see a studio set up and mess about with hammers for couple of hours. I don't think a reasonably priced VIP at a gig with a sound check etc is that different. Three grand is taking the piss though!
Agreed! I also think that the whole untouchable-mysterious-demigod thing doesn’t really fly these days. People want to see that their idols are human beings like the rest of us. We want to identify with them. We want to know that they are the same people onstage as they are behind the scenes. Justin seems to think that you have to be revered to be aspirational, but the reality is that seeing “normal people” with human qualities, flaws, emotions and struggles is far more motivating and inspirational. (Ren & Lewis Capaldi for instance) Maintaining integrity and authenticity is important to fans, we don’t want to find out that we’ve been tricked into supporting a***holes anymore.
🦅🤓…
@@NinStardust yeah absolutely, I also think reverence is for vicars, I'm not quite ready to join a cult...even with dear Justin as it's leader. 😂
@@ZuzuTheLemonWell, in Justin’s very own words, they are a “cult band”… so, I dunno… The Cult of The Darkness sounds pretty freaking awesome to me! Cowbells and catsuits all round! 😂😂😂

Jenny May Finn is amazing. She's got that "I work in a Pet Store in Jersey" look but sounds like John Lennons long lost sister, but full of so much knowledge and Mirth. I'd venture to say I'm falling in Cyber-Love with JMF
I want to hear more about people pike “Softie” and these other crew members he mentions occasionally. Technical crew interview! Let us meet the family!
Another really interesting discussion with lots of funny bits! Yes, more please!! 🤩
I'm trying to get some work done, but these discussions are so interesting I find myself listening intently the whole time. Great content.
So proud of Jenny playing guitar on camera! But also, Justin, the thinnest string is the 1st string and the thickest is the 6th haha. I know it doesn't make sense but that's the way it is ;)
Really enjoy all your content! Richie Kotzen!!! cant wait! my favourite guitarist at the mo, incredible player. cheers guys
Get well JM. Funny, informative, entertaining, love it all. Talk about anything and it will be entertaining.
Could just listen to you both chat for ages, funny and strangely calming. 👍👍
When I was joining bands with the object of getting signed to a big label, it wouldn't take long before band discussions turned to the split of potential publishing and advance money. That's not what musicians should be focusing on but it's the reality of "The Biz".
Sensational start to the podcast! So funny watching Jenny play the theme tune 😂
This is great! More content on the business side, would be amazing 🙏 and great to hear from Jenny ( I remember her from the Russell Brand radio show days!) and see how well she's doing. ❤
This was so interesting to listen to,keep them coming
I really liked it and looking forward for the publishing side of it in the future too.
Fantastic as always . Defo talk more about the business side, because it's another aspect of music on a big scale. Keep it up. Phnar phnar. Have fun.
Enjoyed the business talk, would love to hear more!
I could watch you two talk about anything at all. Charming.
I really enjoyed this one. Since I am not a musician, just a passionate fan, I like learning about different facets of the music profession, and what goes on behind the scenes.
I'm so glad that Jenny May got to see Aerosmith. 🎸
Good day Mr. JH and the lovely Jenny May Finn :}
I love these videos, they might be my favourite. I love your producer! She just seems so sweet.
My daughter has synesthesia and hears music and other sounds in colors, which differ depending on the sound. she also, associates different words/letters/numbers with color. As a small child she would announce something like, "today is a yellow day!", and I never knew what the hell she meant until years later.
I have synesthesia, mine is associated with sounds and numbers also but my numbers effect is different from your daughter experiences. I was in my fifties before I discovered that not everyone sees colors in their brains when they hear sounds with their eyes closed. My belief that everyone was like I was was (in my mind) proven when the Winamp app had the visualizations that you could download and put on screen to see as music played. Some of those visualizations were strikingly similar to what noises, especially music, look like in my head when my eyes are closed. The only time it's dark in my head when I close my eyes is if it's very very quiet. If it is quiet a loud noise will cause a big flash in my head, usually white light, like a white light explosion. I can't fathom what it must be like to close your eyes and see darkness. If I'm not listening to music but thinking about something I'm visualizing what I'm thinking about, like a movie. It's usually from a first person perspective but sometimes it's not.The effect of numbers is different with numbers, I associate numbers with feelings. That effect only goes up to number 11 (thank goodness). Anything past 11 is just like a group of the single numbers. 11 is an exception because it is two lonely 1's but now they're together so it's the very best number and my favorite number since childhood. I've seen colors, swirling dancing, moving colors in my head for as long as I can remember and my attaching feelings, emotions to numbers began as I learned my numbers but I think by then I knew about emotions and that played strongly into what feeling or emotion each number became. 0 is sad, 1 is lonely, 2 is happy and playful, 3 is mean, 4 is great, fun, joyful, 5 is awkward, etc.. I like my synesthesia. I love to lay down with my eyes closed and listen to songs and see the colors. It's pretty awesome. Your daughter is lucky, really. I should ask my son and my grandchildren if they have this. It never occured to me to ask them before now. Oh, has your daughter ever had an aural headache or aural migraine? I'm asking because the only person I ever spoke to in person that has synesthesia had them and so do I which I thought was interesting.
Interesting, idk if she's had auras with her migraines. In general she likes having synesthesia and even uses it to her advantage with school. The color associations help with her memory.
@@heatherbergensten3680 that's great! I always really enjoyed having it and like I said I had assumed everyone did, it was rather shocking to discover everyone doesn't.
I have it with numbers, people (only women) and countries
Great job on the guitar Jenny!
Jenny May is back! 👍 yay!
Yea- this is really fascinating stuff- more please!
Honestly i think your side conversations with Jenny and the tangents are the entertaining side of these videos. I dont care about how to make it in the industry afterall. Do you remember VH1s how they made the music? Might be fun to hear you two go into how a particular hit or one of your cult favorites was made. The idea for the song. How long did it take to write, how many hairs did you pull out or did the heavens part and you had 90% of done in 11 minutes? Something like that.
I still remember Shirley Manson on Joe Rogan talking about her pitfalls of the music business. Defo an eye-opener
So cool that you’ve got Synaesthesia too! I’ve got sound to colour Synaesthesia (Chromesthesia) and make art out of music I listen to😊your voices evoke the perfect combination of colours to listen to❤
Earlier this week I read the lovely bit with you in the book "Exit Stage Left" and that section was more or less an internal audio book, because I'm used to hearing you so often. 😃
Great episode. Glad Jenny is a proper cohost now.
37:06 I feel that. No matter how much I like an artist’s work, I’ll just never understand people who make it a defining part of their personality.
Enjoyed it. Could watch just for the good chemistry.

Yes please. More of these 🎉
I did enjoy JMF's perspective on this one.
It's nice to hear about her world too.
Would it be OK if JH talked about the types of people to look out for in the business particularly terms of negative influences.
Whether it be drug pushers/enablers, bad business or creative advice.
I'm sure a bunch of us (and not just bands starting out) who would be fascinated to hear the cautionary tales from someone who has been in the biz for such a long time.
We need Jenny to reach for the guitar every time she's on. She does not need to play, just do exactly what she did today .
Love that you're both synaesthetes, in different ways...explains a lot with Justin and multiple being a multiple instrumentalist, Jenny's is very interesting, but I get why you both connect, even though it's different. Also, know the worst question is to "what colour?"
loved it!
I have never heard a single song of Justin or his band or anything he has done in his life in the music industry. But I have sen countless hours of him talking on this channel and have become a big fan, he is so nice and retrospective in his way to put his thoughts in front of us.
I found his channel when he reacted to a favorite band of mine.
So, for the music fans of Justin, what should I listen to first, to get introduced correctly?
It's the 20th Anniversary of our debut album Permission to Land on Friday, so that's a good place to start! Then listen to one of our most recent albums, Easter is Cancelled!
@@JustinHawkinsRidesAgain Wow! Didn't think I would get an answer from the man himself! ;) Thanks! I'll sure follow your recommendation! Thank you again, and keep up to good work!
very interesting and fun
I love being in the pit in front of Dan - I wear my plugs and all that - but nothing will ever reign in that flashbang you guys have going on.
The first port of call being ‘find a really great lawyer’ is the biggest shout I’ve heard in a long time - and I’d recommend any UK folk join the Musicians Union, because that’s part of the package
Hey Juzzy, love what you do in all aspects of your life! Keep doing what you’re doing. Come back to Melbourne Australia soon! I love your podcast with the wonderful Jenny May Finn…. Can I just say she is quite gorgeous and I enjoy getting lost in her eyes… Huh? Sorry I lost concentration. What was I saying? 🙈🙉🙊
Very interesting episode. Now I know why LiveNation is selling "souvenir tickets" and even places behind the stage. 😂
Today is also the 3rd anniversary of my husband's death. Can't help but continue to grieve him. We were married for 34 years.
Now if only I could figure out the seating chart at The Truman in Kansas City. I'm going in my wheelchair, but they don't show a seating chart or anything concerning handicap seating of any kind. It's illegal to not offer handicap seats, but I can't find anything that will help. I'll be there regardless! I can't miss PTL 20 th anniversary .
Get well very soon Jenny!
I have this synesthesia thing too - for letters, numbers, days of the week, months, years, etc...
Also thought everyone else did until I was working on lyrics with a friend, and said that he couldn't use a certain word because it was green, and we were really going for more blue words in that verse.
The business side of this is very interesting - for me, mainly because that's what it takes to keep the bands that matter (like The Darkness) running. You could probably keep going from something else (like motivational speaking, for instance?) and go and blast the windows of the pub out on Saturday, but it's not the same as a business that enables either lifetime dedication to the music, or lifetime access to the option of dedicating oneself to the music this Saturday, without having to necessarily go and set up at the local pub.
I think Robert Fripp made a living out of motivational speaking for a while?
I wonder what it would take to have a return to the time of the album. I don't think even a new better-quality format you can only consume on some new music playing equipment would bring that about. People have got used to "only singles", now. They "don't have time" to listen to whole albums. (And now I think of it, I speak for myself, there. I play my surviving CDs in the car, or to drown out the neighbours with something that at least sounds good, on noisy days.)
Tricky problem to solve. Extremely interesting to see how those who are coping manage that. That's not as interesting as the music, but it's something extra in favour of more videos on the business side.
I see years in that kind of number line in my inner vision!
Definitely do more on the business side.
Please!
More like this please!
Belfast in December hell yeah
Definitely be at this one
Don’t let the bells end 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
So glad that the PTL Anniversary tour tickets are reasonable at £40 (for Bristol) means I can actually go!
Justin, your ticket price was quite reasonable. I'm trying to buy a VIP ticket, but the page is dead. I'm very much looking forward to saying hello to you guys. Jenny, I know exactly what you're talking about when you say you feel more alone in a relationship than when you're alone. I've met a lot of rock stars, but one of my favorite experiences was when The Kinks played at the Aragon Ballroom. I gave Ray Davies a carnation and he blew me a kiss. It was epic. I saw the Cult early in their career. Ian humped the stage. For some reason, it was sexy. Yes, please do more on the business side, it would be really cool if you interviewed your manager!
32:13 I can 100% back that up it was spectacular I was there the moment I found out you guys were starting for her it was like I won the lottery my favourite band and favourite solo artist in one night was phenomenal
I really enjoyed this, I know the actual financial details are always cloudy but id love to know how much bands actually make. So many artists saying its tough to make a living but it would be good to get an idea.
when the music's over... TURN OUT THE LIGHTS.. ?=)
Jenny May Finn is…. GORGEOUS!
classical art/musicians, in particular the renaissance onward period until the shift to modernity; was more like Jenny was getting at. Michelangelo did have a patron and that patron expected certain amount of commissions over time; however the artist could use the profits from those commissions from a patron to then pursue other works of their own interest as well. artists also often set up their own schools and the students would learn by helping the master artist do those works (art was far less a solo endeavor compared to modern times)
Be great to know more of how Jenny May Finn became your producer and the aspects of that side of the business??? Good stuff!
