Lights-On Haunted Mansion Holiday Ridethrough - Disneyland Attraction Malfunction [4K POV]

  • Here is a ride-through of Haunted Mansion Holiday with the LIGHTS ON! Something malfunctioned while we were trying to ride Haunted Mansion Holiday on Friday, causing the lights to come on and the music to shut off. For some reason, we were not evacuated from the attraction. Instead, we were sent through the entire attraction with the lights on and the effects clearly visible. What an interesting way to ride Haunted Mansion Holiday!
    We are not sure what the cause of the attraction failure was, but it happened twice during our visit. The footage from the loading ramp is from the second time we tried to ride it. The ride shut down right as we were about to get on, and we were escorted out through a door. Most of the video is made up from footage shot earlier in the morning, during the first shutdown. There was no communication from Cast Members at any point during the ride. The attraction stopped, the lights went out (almost like a power outage), and then the work lights turned on and the ride started. Hopefully, this will get sorted out soon! However, we're glad we got a look at some backstage Disney magic! It helps you appreciate the details that make up this classic attraction.

    You know, as much as some people might say a lights on ride-thru ruins the magic of an attraction, such as the Haunted Mansion, I believe the opposite. I think it's fascinating to see this ride with all the lights on, see the props and effects fully and see how they function. To me, it adds to the magic, as when the lights go down, and you know how it works, it amazes me just how brilliant the Disney Imagineering team truly is, to bring what might seem to be the simplest of effects to a whole different perspective, when the lights go down. Thanks for the vid!

    Seeing it with the lights on, just lets us know HOW MUCH craftsmanship and artistic talent was put into the immersive displays. All the details are stunning! There was no skimping in the set designs! If only all themed dark rides had this much effort into their art design.

      If only EVERY ride in this entire world, especially dark rides, were this good. But remember, they have kept the simplicity since the 1900s dark rides at the turn of the 20th century..Thankfully it doesn't have the same flammable material as the ones from the 1940s and before...So dark rides in most amusement parks are usually run by owners whom just want to make a profit off merchandising and have to keep the restaurants and other attractions looking good while dark rides the owners feel doesn't really need and update until maybe 20/30/40 years down the road and then upgrade the cars+tracks and A/C and ventilation and such.

      I was especially impressed with the black patterned wallpaper as you leave the ballroom and enter the attic scene (around 2:18). I watched a video of a normal lights-off ride-through and as I suspected, you can't see the pattern at all. It's a great example of the details you are talking about.

  • @hanonondricek411
    @hanonondricek411 Před 9 měsíci +74

    Neat things I noticed:
    The Mansion is VERY CLEAN! Likely swept thoroughly as part of the changeover. I always heard stories that they had to keep spreading dust to scenes because the A/C blew it away, or that's only in the non UV lit parts and they're real good at keeping it off the ride track and the corners and baseboards you don't normally see.
    DARKNESS DOES A LOT OF WORK in the design. The graveyard doesn't really do anything much more technologically advanced than carnival dark rides or smaller Disney dark rides (besides the animatronics, they're grouped in the same manner as Pirates, even with turntable gags), but the scale and the detail and intricacy in one tremendously vast room that you get to see from different perspectives from the balcony above, and from outside the gates, and then you zoom in to different scenes that you got an overhead view of is the magic cinematic feat. The vehicles literally are like cameras craning through a tremendous set. The set design knows where to put detail and where not to because again, the darkness covers any lack of detail but there's never any moment you have nothing to look at.
    I thought it was also neat that the floor isn't continuous in the graveyard. - when coming down from the attic you can see cement floor and 2x4s propping up the ground which is sloped up so the ride vehicle is in a little valley to give distance and perspective like a small berm. You can walk between the graveyard and slope from the attic and not be on the set. They didn't bother to paint the backs of the set or the floor because it's so dark and your attention is well-diverted.
    It's easy to see the exterior second story roof on the right when descending from the attic that you normally barely get a glimpse of between the trees because it's dark and SO MUCH is distracting you on the left.

      Kids are always going to point out the flaws and continuously talk about it, especially if they have friends in the same car as they are. So don't be surprised if those individuals are in elementary school and they just don't know what is fiction to them and what is real...They just expect it to be playing and doing it normally instead of no audio and just sound effects and that's it...To them it's a bit scary and talking outloud makes them feel better than just staying quiet, even though they don't know it's done by engineers/adults whom make it special or cool to those whom are interested in behind the scenes stuff of the Haunted Mansion and such.

      @WolfDShadow Před 9 měsíci +1

      Before they shut down the DL People Mover, it also went through Spacemountain. That is part of the reason in order to repair the track they would have to also tear into the show buildings the track goes through. When they begin the New Tomorrowland remodeling the list of attractions they will be keeping is so short, the list is Monorail, Spacemountain, Disneyland Railroad Station. The Matterhorn and a portion of the Autotopia/Submarine track area will become Fantasyland for the Fantasyland expansion. That leaves a lot of options of what to put in the New Tomorrowland including a new People Mover with no restrictions on where the track can go. Also the old Ameica Sings/Inoventions building footprint is identical to Spacemountain's so they could even possibly relocate or double the number of Spacemountain tracks placing the entrance in-between the 2 buildings which would then also give them a reason to have a larger Firework Viewing area and moving sidewalk going to the upper level while then allowing the current entrance ramp area to Spacemountain be converted into additional seating for the restaurant underneath. They could also keep the cast member gate where it's currently at by using a moving sidewalk going up since it will leave open a space underneath with them walking to the left or right of the moving sidewalk to head towards their assigned area in the land.

    • @SuperFlashDriver
      @SuperFlashDriver Před 9 měsíci

      @@WolfDShadow To be honest, if they did have two of the same attractions in one area, the lines wouldn't be so long compared to only having one attraction. Why bother trying to come up with a new attraction when you can, double/triple the amount of the same attraction at different buildings and such?? If it can be done in theme park video games, then so should theme parks in real life.

When I worked there, there were dedicated maintenance teams for every attraction, so when something like that happened, we’d stop loading, close the door to the foyer, cycle the guests on the ride out, exit everyone inside pre-load out through emergency exits, empty the queue, and shut the front gate until it was fixed. It’s super bad to allow guests to see the place with work lights on. I know there’s no longer dedicated team for each ride, which IMO is insane.

      Probably a reason. If the hallway was packed and the exit was too dangerous to let people leave then it may have been just better to cycle them out through the ride.

    • @hanonondricek411
      @hanonondricek411 Před 9 měsíci +8

      They can probably save an hour or two of time if nothing is functionally wrong with the ride system just bringing guests out the normal way in vehicles rather than CMs unlocking every one and waiting for guests to wander to the exit. My guess is there was something wrong with the ride sound system since there were no announcements nor a peep from the soundtrack, and usually during a temporary stop the attraction sound continues, only ducking out during live or pre-recorded announcements.
      I've heard that there's a threshold of what is "bad show" that will close an attraction even if everything else is otherwise working. I read a story once about the Pirates CMs being told the Auctioneer's hat had fallen off. That wasn't a huge deal - a CM just has to walk in and put it back, but when they discovered it was actually the Auctioneer's HEAD had completely fallen off, that qualifies as "bad show" and they closed Pirates down.
      In this video there was no attraction sound, and also it looked like Jack's right hand was missing outside the cemetery gates? That might be something that's only visible with the lights on.

    I see this as an "on purpose" for sensory challenged audiences. There is a huge audience for type of ride experience, and I intially saw this as something like that, along the lines of the Not So Scary halloween. that said, I adore this kind of video for the details we get to experience. I'm not likely to see this dressing of the mansion in person, so I'm very grateful to you for this.

    virtually silent -- the music and narration add so much to this attraction. Hard to believe the original ride is an incredible 54 years old -- with few exceptions, it's virtually the same as when it first opened in August 1969

We have been watching another blogger, "Hey Brickey" and he has been doing a series on the HM, there is a great story about the trees, which you can really see in your vid, as you "fall" backwards into the cemetary, you really need to watch those for the backstory!

    What are the black cylindrical things most seen in the attic and graveyard quite near the ride track? Are they speakers or hiding lights or some sort of infra red sensing system if you get out of the ride vehicle?

    • @hanonondricek411
      @hanonondricek411 Před 9 měsíci

      My wild guess is pop-up ghost speakers since they seem to be nearby where they are in the regular version of the attic and graveyard, but they're off for holiday. Or they could just be general positional audio - the ghosts wail in the attic, and then in the graveyard when you hear different specific ghost voices singing the song...maybe?
