The Muppet version is more accurate
Some may claim that Maleficent started the whole "Making an infamous villain sympathetic" craze, but "Wicked" arguably got there first, by depicting the Wicked Witch of the West as simply misunderstood!
Wicked was absolutley the blueprint for Maleficent, Frozen and Oz the Great and Powerful in the 2010's
It actually started with a classic novel that retold an even more classic novel from the point of view of the werewolf villain, giving him a lot of philosophical depth that not even the original had. This trend has continued (Wicked, Maleficent, and Cruella are all more profound stories than the ones they were inspired on). Can't remember the name of the werewolf novel though. But it's no Twilight, it's a classic😂
The Maleficent movies, I call the first one,, "Maleficent, The Life and Times of a Dark Fairy." They do have a similar journey, the way they redefine themselves.
The Wicked musical is a rare treasure, because it's actually very likeable even to book fans. It's distinct enough yet also respects the source material's essence. That said, the novel that inspired the musical, by Gregory Maguire, is vastly superior. It's deeply philosophical and wonderfully written. As an author I'm left in awe at how such an arguably small book can create such a complex world and intense reading experience. It's the only book that's ever made me cry.
There's been so many adaptations because the Wizard of Oz entered the public domain before copyright law was extended to cover 95 years. If copyright law was still at 56 years then there would be so many other works that would be in the public domain and then anyone could be free to make their own adaptation.
Return To Oz is such a terrifying film. Genuinely horrific
It does follow the books much more closely than the mgm film
I find it funny that Return to Oz, the most faithful adaptation, kept showing up during moments when the narrator is mentioning wacky versions. It is the most faithful version. Lol.
I remember "Tin Man" with Zooey Deschanel as the modern "Dorothy" figure. It's a pity that it's not more well known.
I don't know where I heard it but there was a totally different plot for Tin Man. It was going to be about the Tin Man solving a murder, which I think was Dorothy killing the witch. But then they changed it but kept the name.
I'm amazed I'd never heard of it. Interesting cast.
I love this mini series! One of my favorites
Imma be honest, I like both the Judy Garland's Wizard of oz and Diana Ross's the Wiz, but on two different scale points of the same coin.
In other words, Judy's Wizard of Oz felt like a child's journey of learning of finding herself, while the Wiz felt more of a story about an adult finding themselves. Both are very important and even though they both are different when it comes to the race and culture factor, I still believe that both can be viewed by everyone not matter their race because both of these Dorothy go through phases of their lives that we as the audience have also gone through. Being an adult is hard, as well as a child, which is why I truly love both Judy and Diana's versions of Dorothy. Even the movies themselves feel different, with Judy's wizard of Oz, the movie felt very childish with its coloring and how they sang and acted. But with the WIZ, there is a mature element in the film and I think that is because Daina' Dorothy is an adult
But when it comes to musicals, I gotta give it to the Wiz. That ease on down the road is a classic and it had Michael Jackson! Plus the emerald song is awesome! And Diana was running in those heels, I gotta give it to her! She was running and dancing for her life in those five-inch heels!!
Return to Oz is such a gorgeous, haunting and incredible piece of fantasy cinema. At a time when they were really trying to make everything in movies look as real as possible without having technology like CGI to do so. It's the most faithful adaption to the books, the sets, puppetry and practical effects are absolutely stunning on screen, and David Shire's score is beautiful, enchanting, and melancholy. Please go watch it if you can!
You omitted Rebecca Mader as Zelena from Once Upon A Time. Oz was incredibly nuanced in that series and her rivalry with Dorothy was also given a great spin
I recently stumbled upon a noteworthy book adaptation of The Wizard of Oz. A coworker recently lended me an old children's book of hers, which I was surprised to see was the UdSSR version, printed in the old eastern Germany (DDR). Names where changed ( Toto is called Totoschka), but this Dorothy also wants to return to Kansas and finds herself battling the same obstacles with the same friends.
There are many more books in the series that move far away from the first book and greatly expand the cast of characters.

Maybe I’m reaching here but ‘New Girl’ definitely gave ‘The Wizard of Oz’ Energy.
Anyone who loves Oz, must read the book called "Finding Dorothy" by Elizabeth Letts. Frank wasn't just a great author, but a great great man. True ahead of his time. So glad to know he was such a kind loving man. I love the Oz universe❤❤❤
I recommend "Finding Oz," which also gives insight into the author's life, but also the historical places, people, and events that shaped these characters. The root of the good and bad witches was truly unforgettable.

There's also the re-narration (gracefully with not a copyright concern in the world) from 1939 and returning fully revised 1959 by Soviet author Aleksandr Volkov. It works somewhat more focused to be a children's adventure novel, features magnificent illustration art (from 1959 on) and spawned a few sequels itself. In the Eastern block as well as China this is indeed the better known version, going by variations of 'Wizard of Emerald City'
The whole book series has sone really great characters and expands on the universe in interesting ways.

Luke returns home and finds destruction -- Dorothy returns home and finds destruction

Etc. etc.
Now that you mention it this is right
There's also 13 books in the original series, not counting the sequel series by other authors. So there's a lot material to go off, that was included in Return to Oz, Oz the Great and Powerful, and Emerald City.
I suppose they have a good reason for not mentioning the old HBO series "Oz" about a prison with a special cell block known as "Emerald City" . Of course if you have ever seen or eventually watch the series you'll understand why it wasn't included here.
I've been BEGGING for an Oz video for years!
Growing up in the 70's, this was a favorite. I never missed the annual showing. My millennial kids love it. My alpha generation grandkids love it.
As a kid, I was a fan of Baum's whole series of Oz books. I never knew there were two silent versions, though! Dying to see them! 😀
I remember as a little girl how I bought my own pair of ruby slippers and later got some others in other colors. They were the rage in ballet flats back in the 90s. I do love that movie and Return to Oz is a intresting dark sequel.

I love the Wiz. emerald city had a lot of potential to be a good long running show but they sort of ruined one of characters at the end
The original Wizard of Oz book was meant to be an allegory for the 1896 presidential election campaign of William Jennings Bryan. Bryan wanted to change the American Dollar from the Gold Standard to use Silver too. In the original book, they were silver slippers, not ruby, on the yellow brick road. Toto was thought to be short for "teetotalers" who were unhelpful political followers. Scarecrow was supposed to be the farmers, Tin Man was the factory system, and the Cowardly Lion was supposed to be Bryan, who was basically all bark and no bite.

Yeah I was told that the series of books that The Wizard of Oz is based on they're far darker in tone.
It is. Like the backstory of each of the characters are more tragic. Dorthy is much smarter in the books though. And she has to overcome more problems than just the witch.

Of all the adaptations Oz The Great and Powerful is my favorite followed by The Wiz. Nothing beats the OG 1933 film though.

-We did The Wiz in school, and I had to learn to tap dance for my Tin Man solo. "Slide Some Oil to Me" is a *weird* song...
-Oz the Great and Powerful was unintentionally funny. Mila Kunis doesn't have the bone structure to be the Wicked Witch. She looked ridiculous.
-Emerald City was such a misfire. But I think if someone took another crack at the idea, with a better budget, a do-over might be interesting.

When I was a little girl living in the former Soviet Union reading Wizard of Oz was my first and foremost exposure to this faraway land called America and I had little else to go on, as a result I thought the entire place was all nothing but windswept prairie lol

I think the old 'Beetlejuice' cartoon series explained the reason for all the Oz spinoffs the best with their own Wizard of Oz parody -

There is political satire in the original book for the late 19th century that The Take missed. The Yellow Brick Road is the gold standard, the scarecrow is the rural voter and smarter than he realizes, the tin man is the blue collar factory worker, the directions (east for the banking Industry, west for the frontier) the witch beaten by water (drought ailing the farmers beaten by rain) etc.
My favorite is the Scrubs episode My Way Home.
And then, there's..... RWBY!

Id say you forgot OUAT's Wicked Witch and Oz type story but since it's very short an episodic and the storylines venture off away from Oz almost immediately, understandable it wouldnt count...it's more of a "Oz piece to introduce the Wicked Witch backstory"

The 1925 silent version that was SO bad that I recall L Frank Baum set up his own production company to do Oz adaptations. It had virtually nothing to do with the original, the actors only show up in costume for about 5 minutes (and aren't actually playing the famed characters anyway), there's an incredibly racist caricature in the film, and it had characters named Prime Minister Kruel and Prince Kynd. Yes, their characters match their names. So dumb.
But the "Tin Man" is played by Oliver Hardy, so, something, I guess? Don't treat that as a recommendation to watch that film. It still sucks.

Glad you didn't mention legends of oz: Dorothy's return. a bland forgettable cgi film that was in actuality an elaborate ponzi scheme funded by shady business practices, over promising its success, getting talent way to good for its calibur, and being run by two con artist brothers and coffee store owner turned film producer, who used some of the money to pay for play his son Noah centino. It's a very odd story.

Its actually the closest to the source material. In the books, there are invisible bears, plants that were people before but are now just plants with heads, and much more. The books would be a great Tim Burton project.

The Oz books are very queer. I wish we would get a proper musical film adaption of book 2 and 3.
I can hardly wait until they destroy the classic 1939 film with a cheesy, goofy, lame and poorly cast live action remake….. just like Disney does to their classics.
