  • ETT Season 4, episode 7: Get ready for some HOT snowboard action in this month's Every Third Thursday! Dave Lee and the Signal Snowboards crew get back to the base-ics, experimenting with new technology to actually heat up the base of a snowboard and test out their theory that a hot base will go faster. Dave explains that the snow sliding action actually works from friction heating up the snow and forming a thin layer of water that the board slides on, but what if we speed up that process by incorporating a heat film into the base? Watch as Dave dials the base all the way up to 128-degrees and snowboarder Alex Cato heats up the slopes of Park City Resort.

    you should lend this board to some people who will do some actual tests on it. Like flatboard time/speed tests. Statistical documentation rather than subjective opinion (not that opinions weren't nice to hear, but it didn't sound overly convincing)

    be careful where you keep those lipo batteries because if they get to low they will blow up and catch on fire. when they are used in rc cars there is something called lipo cut off which cuts it off when they get low to prevent it from blowing up.

      A snowboard doesn't actually melt the snow underneath (neither does an ice skater for that matter). The increase in pressure from going over the snow/ice actually raises the melting/boiling point of the ice.
      Snow/ice is strong because it forms a crystal lattice that holds all the molecules together. On the top layer there are molecules that don't have others to connect to so they wave free, creating a liquid like surface.
      here is a picture of what I am attempting to explain.
      2.bp.blogspot.com/-cXQSuwQOcAg/TfXWakrHK6I/AAAAAAAAAHk/LXfvO12baok/s1600/ice_structure.jpg

    • @Achack
      @Achack Před 10 lety

      This is a cool idea but it will always be limited to how much power you have, you guys didn't even limit yourself to the snowboard itself but instead carried the batteries in the pocket of the rider. If you put your hand against snow it will feel cold at first but slowly start to change as your hand heats up the snow but if you drag your hand through snow it will get much colder because your constantly coming in contact with fresh ice cold snow. I wish you guys could've monitored the temperature of the board as you were riding to see how warm you were keeping it as it passed over fresh snow rather than the temp when it wasn't in contact with something freezing cold other than air. Still a crazy idea, you guys are like bill nye or myth busters for snowboarding. Hope you do more vids like this.

    You need numbers to prove any experiment. Feels faster is not science. Is not repeatable. Ever heard of a placebo? You should have just went down the regular mountain and clocked runs on a gps app on any smartphone. After a few runs then you can take the mean of say 10 runs without battery then 10 runs with battery. Then you would have hard numbers and not feels faster. Take care.

    Since you have already a powered board, I would be cool if you were able to make a pair of boots or shoes and bindings that could be magnetized together with electro magnets. This would allow allow a rider to get on, off lifts, and get going down hill quicker, rather than re-attaching the loose binding before heading down hill.
    Foot wear would to need have some sort of a jigsaw puzzle structure that would fit into a structured jigsaw puzzle binding. The fitting would help keep the rider from slipping off the board.

    Place a hidden battery in a jacket.
    Run some wires down to the boots, and have some kind of connector at the bottom of each boot.
    the female connector on the bottom of the boot snaps into a male connector attached to the snowboard and bindings
    Nobody would be able to tell that the board had been altered, and nobody would be able to see any wires or a battery.

    You are sliding on a thin layer of melted snow, but your speed comes from how quick you can tread the water out from under your board, not just having more water under your board. That's why there are different types of structure you can put on your board. There is a specific structure that acts like tread on your tires that gets the water away from your board quicker.

    Why not create a snowboard on fire if a heated board goes faster ?
    Come to think of it.. a coloured smoke trail would be epic as well :)
    Especially with multiple riders each riding a different color !
    These videos are awesome !

    it is suxx. your board hot 45 or 130 degrees only by stand. after you lay the board on snow and start moving , she momentally cold to snow temperature as ordinary board.

  • @14arma
    @14arma Před 9 lety

    I would like to see this done with a consistent downhill slope with equal weights on 2 boards... Or try a blind test with dead battery's so the rider doesn't know if hes on a heated board or not and see if they can accurately determine whether their board was heated or not based on the ride alone to any significant consistency. Cool idea though, it may very well work.

    I thought while snowboarding, that your floating on air molecules withing the snow and so that is why you go glide and go faster. Example, fresh powder is better than compacted snow/ice. There is more air compartments in fresh powder to glide over, but when the ice is compacted there are less molecules in the snow to ride over. By melting the ice you are just making your ride similar to going down a slide(why you may feel that your are going down faster), which would make your control less accurate. If I am wrong please correct me, this is just what i have been told about the mechanics of skiing and snowboarding.

      You realize you go slower through powder right? It's about friction and resistance, I've can be faster if it's smooth and not bumpy, but if there is a thin layer of water you would slide over it much faster, it's the same as a car when it hydroplanes.

    An easy formal test is the same skier does the same run over and over without jumps or rails.
    If there is a difference in speed then it should show up in the run times.
    Also, if it melts much snow, won't it create more patches of ice?

    I doubt if it actually made any difference, it's more likely that it actually made it slower. The heat would melt the wax and would rub off onto the snow, then you're riding on an unwaxed board. The placebo effect is a wonderful thing

    *I was thinking hell, test it industrially with equipment.*
    1) Make a shallow angled gutter from plywood, cover evenly with snow.
    2) Let the board go down on it's own WITHOUT heat, and then WITH.
    3) Record times, do math, empirical results.

    The heat of the board would have little affect on the snow melt; Im pretty sure it depends more on the force of the board hitting the snow, compressing a tiny amount of it, turning it into water.

      Would a board slide better on ice, water or steam?
      What about all 3?
      You can build a hoover board using the steam from the heat.

  • @Milkex

  • @laurencebaldauf4570
    @laurencebaldauf4570 Před 6 lety

    Could "Feel Faster" because of the Placebo effect. Try having the test subject ride the board with it on, and another time with it off - but don't tell them when it is on or off, and see if they can tell you after the ride which is which.

  • @artificium_

    should've checked the temp after the run to see how much heat was lost. i'd think it would be a lot and that running over all that snow would suck the heat out quick.

    Great job constructing the board fellas, but I wish you had given some actual numbers. I'd wager that board is no faster, but I'm still glad y'all tried it. If you give me some basic numbers on the energy flow from those batteries (volts and amps), I can tell you how quickly that snow cools the board back down.
