The 89G - Fox Body ECU Capacitor Replacement and Repair, Do It Yourself & Save Money

Welcome to another episode of The Eight Nine Garage. Today we will replace the capacitors in my A9L engine control unit (ECU) from my 89 Mustang. We put Japan made Nichocon capacitors in as an upgraded replacement to the stock original components. We use solder wick to de-solder the old capacitors, then use a Weller solder station to install them. However, we do eventually switch to my old Radio Shack solder iron, as it has a more appropriate tip.

I have got to tackle my A9L to do this same repair. My eyesight is not good and when I pulled the board and looked at the bottom my confidence went to 0. Man they packed those caps and resistors in there and they're tiny! Great how to video.

Awesome! I wasn't sure if anyone would be familiar. We made DOD and Digitech pedals. We did Harman Kardon, Fosgate, and JBL stuff there too. I still have my old Digitech RP3.
Awesome video! Great job replacing those caps. I didn’t know the stripe indicated negative on those.Really cool about your electronic background. I ’ve had many DOD pedals, definitely have heard of Fosgate. I would have ugly solder joints and probably burn the board getting something too hot. hello boss, change the aod transmission for standard t5, it is necessary to change the A9P ecu for the A9L
I am very sorry, I just saw your other comment this morning. I have been running an A9P in my 89 for several years, and it runs perfect. The A9P is just a little different program on the timing, and also how it handles coming back down to idle at a stop. Did you make any changes on your TPS when you removed the TV cable from the throttle body?

Hello my man,great video as usual,i wanted to ask a question,i have a A9P and the computer itself looks great,capacitors need replaced but they dont look bad,still has the warranty sticker on the J port however pin 57 is burnt, not the trace itself on the board but the actual pin inside on the big plug, its right in front of that red capacitor (not sure if thats the proper name for that thing), it burn right in the middle, any idea why this happened and could it be repaired by a jumper ? thank you so much for your time.

That big grey plug where the main harness connects to the ECU,that big plug is soldered to the main board by 60 pins, one of those pins broke in the middle, actually burned in half,its pin number 57 (vehicle power),i assume you know all those pins have a number? there are 60 total.
On your video at the 3:32 mark on the left hand side below that magic marker notation and right in front of that red transistor is where the pin broke,ive read that if you try to do diagnostics by jumping the diagnostic port and you jump the plug that goes to the hood light and not the correct one (the other small plug), you can burn that pin up,im thinking whoever had that computer before me did just that.

does capacitors control fuel injectors or another part within ecm - 97 f 350 , injectors not firing

Do you know if your crank position sensor is good? I'd start there.

Really cool of you, I just sub'd to yours to.
I ask because I am measuring the TPS connector and it gives me 5v on the orange cable and the green one gives me 4.79v when it should be 1v I have doubts that my ecu has a problem
It sounds to me like your TPS is somehow at WOT. Is it clocked/installed correctly on the throttle body?

I didn't know that capacitior has + -. I soldered wrong, and of course my foxbody is still not starting. Do u think i completly damaged ECU or i stil hav chance?
These things are pretty resilient. You might be just fine. Just flip the caps around, and try it out. Hopefully they aren't too difficult to reinstall with the leads being shortened.
So on where you put on the second capacitor (47uf 50v) I mine instead has a 47uf 16v. Not sure if that's correct on some A9L's? Thanks!
Great question! The 47uf is what matters most. As long as it's rated to handle at least 16V, you are fine. I always go bigger on voltage.... just a preference of mine. Hopefully that makes sense.

Generally they will run like garbage. That can include a miss, low on power, hard to start, black smoke.... Thanks for asking. I didn't realize I hadn't covered that.

@@89G yeah spent all day Saturday fixing some plumbing stuff and I was a bit under the weather today. Didn't get a chance to record anything in the garage. Should be back at it next weekend though.

I tried changing my capacitors. Didnt go to well on my end, unfortunately. I even used the same old radioshack sodering iron.

@@89G Yeah my dad and I had alot of trouble getting the contacts to de-solder. We did 2 of them together which went alright. But on the 3rd one I did it on my own. I ended up pulling up the entire contact point for the last one. Pretty sure I damaged the connecting line around the capacitor.
On the bright side we did another PCM a day after for my Dad's F-150, after the job its running better than its ever had before, so at least that's a victory. I geuss the silver lining for me is that I get to look for an A9L Manual PCM instead of the A9P Auto one I was using. Wish I saw your video before doing the job though. That de-solder wick would've been handy.
Yeah the car stopped starting, and the fuel pump was stuck on priming when the key was on. But hey we win some and we loose some.
@@Scruffy72 that's so frustrating when the contact comes off the board! I've had to run jumper wires instead as a fix. Is that a possibility on yours?

@@89G maybe if I found a wire small enough it could work. I know it was the circle contact that I pulled out, on the capacitor closest to the wire harness connector. Maybe I'll mess with it some more before I give up.

I've got a 392 stroker kit with a factory 5 speed and some extras...(but not the best heads from what I'm told...on a budget...and I know how to upholstery work....) Which is why I bought the vert I got... needs a top...6 months after I bought the car....the head gasket went and catastrophic damage occurred....then a mechanic offered to rebuild it and I never heard from him again after paying him 600 bucks to remove my motor and ....well..buyers remorse has kicked in huge. Now that the loan is payed off...my car that would have been a nice entry in and a good deal to start is more than. 20k upside down and I'm STILL not driving several years later....😅🤣😂

I have the computer that came with the car that I paid a shop to finish a job that another guy left me high and dry.... and while in their custody/care/control....I was told that the ECU gave up on them....they found one at a junkyard where the fuel pump just stays on full at the accessory position on the key.... well.. they got a jumper wire from under the driver's seat that goes to the ground to allow the fuel pump to be on....but it runs rich and the check engine light stays on....and the car overheats.... it's got some issues still.. 😅🤣😂
SO.... I had bought the kit that comes with the 3 pieces that normally goes bad and with my dads special soldering gun and magnifying glass goggles I THOUGHT I was gonna be fine... I used the ECU that was in the car when I bought it...(which was refurbished before I got it)...
Anyways when I put the 3 new pieces in the board and put the thing in the car... when I turn the key forward..it makes a sound like when a starter solenoid goes bad and it just clicks back and forth...(but much more quickly). Never got the car to turn over....🤔
So.... I just put the junkyard one back in. So I have 2 ECU units....one with new parts that didn't fix the problem...and another that allows the car to run...but not optimal....and when I drove the car around the neighborhood....realized the speedometer doesn't work now either 😅🤣😂
I used to do all kinds of car stereo and alarms and got into upholstery work...but for some reason....when it comes to keeping a car running..... I'm an idiot! Haha!
@@mrupholsteryman The ECU doesn't have anything to do with the motor turning over... or maybe I am misunderstanding what you mean by "it just clicks". Or does the motor actually attempt to start (turn over)?
What model of ECU are they? Are they both A9L's? I'll be happy to test one or both of them out and see if we can get you going again!
@@89G I'm at the in-laws away from the car at moment...family time. Car has been a sore topic at times. 😅🤣😂 I'm in York Pa. They are different looking as one is black and the other is grayish...but I never took notice of different model numbers yet.
