When Motorcraft went from Purolator to Champ, I switched and only use Purolator Filters now. Specifically The Purolator One.
They look like a really good alternative! 👍 Thank you for the suggestion 🙏
Try *Purolator Tech* - same sh..t but cheaper
The Champ made oil filters for Motorcraft were only temporary due to supply chain issues. They're already out of the supply chain. Purolator filters have been the only ones in stock for a long while.
As an auto parts store owner Wix filters cost me more than what i was selling them 4 years ago...as we continue to Build Back Better expect the prices to continue to go up
It's unfortunate being in your position, I imagine. I don't mind paying more for better. Thank you for adding that info!
we just cut open 3 motorcraft filters 3 different vendor ,and all 3 just full of glue,we also will be using wix...Thanks for the Great video ,Heads up, Thanks...bs they would make a filter like that..
I agree! I never heard back from them either. Huge disappointment! Thanks for sharing your findings too!
Thank God I got the 4 cylinder oil filter by accident instead of the V6 for my 07 Ford Escape. I returned it immediately and bought a Mobil 1 since they didn't have the Wix like you mentioned. Appreciate the info, my engine sends its regards to ya 👍
@@ThatBeaver1 glad to help! Thank you for the feedback 😊
Motor Craft made by Purolator which is owned by Mann & Hummel. Motor Craft filters are manufactured in South Carolina the more you know
Thank you!
I wish you had a FL1A from the 70s, they even better
I wish I did too! That would be a great find.
I stopped using the MC over a year ago. Too many videos of seeing poor quality control. Strictly use the Purolator Boss now...gladly pay the $ for peace of mind.
I'm thinking of going that route myself 😎👍👍
@@Jay388 Good deal, they get high marks from most places i've seen. That's why i switched to the Boss. So far, very solid filter.
Same here
All USA made filters are having the same problems, including Purolator Boss with closed louver inner tubes that block or restrict flow. I cut open a Boss with almost completely closed louver and there was a inch of the filter media that was not glued that would have allowed unfiltered oil to the engine.
@@SameGuy875 had a similar issue with the Purolator ONE filters. Louvers weren’t opened up. It’s typically not an issue, as long as you inspect before you put it on a vehicle.
I was pleasantly surprised how nice the Mircoguard select. It’s made by premium guard extended life filters. They are made in Vietnam I think. Super duper well made. Holes instead of louvers. White glue that’s super strong and not sloppy. Also use an actual spring for the bypass valve. Silicone anti drain back valve and silicone gasket. Good stuff I use them for everything.
That is some great info. I really appreciate you bringing that into the conversation. Thank you!
Microgard Select filters are excellent. They are very well made. Same for the Premium Guard Extended Life. They have high flow properties with very clean filter assemblies. BTW, that Motorcrap filter is pure garbage. I would NEVER put one in my car.
@ChicagoRob2 thank you for the input! I need to pop one open.
Today i changed oil for my 2012 fusion hybrid with the 2.5 lit i live in the middleeast and i asked the tech why are they dumping fomco filters they said the same reason you mentioned and some they said it explodes
So i switched to wix
Wow!!! Hadn't heard of that issue. I hope Ford will respond to the poor feedback they are receiving. Thank you for sharing your experiences.
Oh dang, that's crazy! Guess I'm switching to wix now. Thanks for making this video 89!
You're welcome my friend! Hope you had a good Easter!
Seems like all the companies that were bought by Mann & Hummel are having quality control issues, especially with the super sloppy glue.
"If" you didn't know Mann & Hummel bought Purolator & WIX. Seems like they are cheapening more & more of the models up like getting rid of the clean end bypass valves to getting rid of the silicone gaskets. That goes for both companies. Some of the WIX filters now use a cheaper stamped steel piece for pressure instead of their regular coil spring. And yes there is also a glue problem.
I've also seen where there's some new part numbers replacing old Motorcraft oil filters. When opened they look extremely similar to the super cheap Champ Labs Supertech oil filters at Wlmrt. Plastic inside cage & all.
Thanks for that info.... That backs up some of my findings. I've been in the process of getting some other filters to look over, and this info makes the picture clearer on when I found.
I used the old MOTORCRAFT FL-1A filters on my old now, new at time 1981 TOYOTA 4x4 Longbed Pickup for decades.!! The first year of the upgrade engine size, and Toyota's best most produced engine, the 22R from the smaller 20R engine.! The 22R was used in the Toyota Celica also as the standard engine. The Motorcraft FL-1A Was the BIG oil filter option versus the small size filters.! A plus was the extra additional amount of total oil capacity.! Also, the dirt holding capacity was by far greater with the bigger filter.!! 560,000+ thousand miles, and no oil burning or loss between 3000 mile oil, and filter changes.! Factory stickers are still on the air cleaner cover just like new, and Toyota reccomended to change motor oil every 10,000 miles under normal conditions, and every 5000, miles under extreme or dusty conditions.! That's on a 1981 engine using just plain old Dinosaur oil.!! That says alot for there product Quality, and confidence in them.!! I noticed that on the Dealership lot before buying the Truck.! I thought to myself that will never happen, and it never has.!!😊
I have a Yaris that I drive as my daily. It's such a great running car. It has 245K on it now. It has a 1NZFE and although it's not a powerhouse, it gets around alright. I'll most certainly buy another one to replace it whenever that time comes. I stay on top of the maintenance very religiously, and I know that's playing a major role in the longevity. BTW, I just love those old trucks. They are soooo solid! I appreciate you watching and commenting!
Great video! I always use Wix. I thought Fram was the worst filters, these are just as bad. You’re 100% correct on Parts Master, those are Wix too. The last shop I worked at used those. Can be purchased at bumper to bumper! Have a great Easter buddy!
👊😎✌️
Thanks my friend! I've always been a Wix fan. But they're number one now.
I've always liked Wix since being around them at Amware years ago, but this pushes me over the edge. I don't care what a Wix costs, that's what I'm going for.
I'm right there with you! I'm upset they let this happen.
Watch that Wix…some made in china, some Mexico. Quality took a hit as price climbed.
@@user-fw6xr3ue2q The WIX trans filters that I use are made in China. They've been OK thus far, but I am keeping an eye on it. Thanks!!
I appreciate this video and I too, noticed the change at the cup of the filter. I run a STP on my ‘88 Fox, and a K&N on my ‘98 and so far, so good on both. I believe in FoMoCo products but I’ve said bye to that filter.
I was astonished. Especially for the way they've gone up in price. I really hope this decline in quality is limited to oil filters only.
Some of the newer MotorCraft filters are also just white "AC Delco " champ labs filters too ,i call those " MotorCrap " filters
I've got some Champ Labs stuff in my Rock Auto cart.... that's good to know. Thanks for putting that info here!
That's why they call it Motorcrap.
Wow messed up. Disappointed too. I wanted to stay OE with Motorcraft. I guess will go too KN and just stay Safe.
K&N is on my list to cut open. I cut open 3 other brands last night, and I was pretty astonished at what I found!
For the longest time, I'd use the FL-910S filters for all of my lawn mowers, and get them from Walmart. Same deal...you could get them for $4/filter, and they were great. Then they were gone... I'm seeing them back again, only they're $8!! I'm with you... I'm switching to Wix or Carquest Premiums. Thanks for the features!
My Escape takes the 910S, and I also noticed those jumped up in price too! I just got a Purolator Tech, Fram TG, and an Ecogard in the mail to cut open.
@@89G Another great alternative to the 910S that has gone away was the Supertech MP3614. Great filters to test on (Purolator, Fram and Eco guard). I'll keep an eye out for it!
Wix are my goto oil filters, but the MicroGuard filters are very good too!
Yes, I agree! Both are very viable options.
You know, i started noticing a difference a few months ago. And when they went from $5 to almost $9, i started asking myself why i'm staying with MC. I kept telling myself that the QUALITY was the most important part. Now i'm looking at Purolators again.
You know, that's exactly right. I was just opening these up to see what improvements had been made to warrant the extra price... they are 12 dollars now here. Boy was I surprised 😮
wix for the win!!!
They make a really good product!
Another site opened up that Motorcraft filter and it had the same messy glue on the end caps.
It's bad... I wanted to back up my findings, and I decided to cut another one open. Same thing as well. I really hope Ford responds to this, and finds a different supplier!
I've always used the FL820S on my Modulars because they were good filters for a low price. My favorite filter brand for my other engines whether 3.5L EB, GEN3 Coyote, Exmark mower, or JD 5075E is a Baldwin filter. They are quality USA made filters that are built strong, and priced fairly. The Baldwin B329 cross references the the FL820S, but I've never seen one cut open as most people have always just used the FL820S.
I've used Baldwins on my Toyota. Definitely some high quality filters! I was impressed. That is an idea to try one of those! Thank you
No problem. Glad to give a decent filter suggestion. 👍
@@JROC734 yes, that is very helpful to all of us!
If you guys like the older Motorcraft filters that were made better, consider using a Purolator or a CarQuest filter. Those are almost exactly what the previous better-made Motorcraft filters are and the price isn't out of control on those like some other filters I could mention. Alternatively, if you like the WIX brand you can get the Microguard offered at O'Reilly's it's a WIX filter for about half the price.
Yes indeed. Great info. Thanks so much for adding that! ☺️
I've got a Purolator on the way to cut open!
Yeah, Carquest premiums are pretty good. Used them in the past as well. No issues...
@@CWB1863 the Carquest I used to go to closed. I'll have to see if Advance has them.
They do, they have them behind the counter for some reason.
Well dang man. I did what you did and bought all the FL1As that Walmart had. Been a couple years so maybe I'm good. I've been using them on my 88GT since i bought it new. The cost is stupid now. I use Wix on everything else. I've always thought they were the best except Motorcraft..... I'll be changing solely to Wix. Thanks for the vid Shane.
My FL1A is at least a couple years old, and it was fine. Do you know what style "socket" they have? That may be the telling factor for you. Thanks for watching!! Much appreciated.
I'll be looking tomorrow for sure! 😂
@@waynestinyworld I'm curious to know!!
@@89G Well i looked at the last 2 i have. Bought in Feb 2022. Both have the newer looking flats on the end. So who knows. I have a request. Can you give us the various numbers on Wix made filters compatible with FL1A?
@@waynestinyworld Yes. I have the list on my PC at home. I'll get back with you!
I’d bet if FOMOCO is very concerned they would like to have those filters back.
You could very well be right. I'm kind of stunned that I still haven't heard back from them.
@@89G Let us know if they ever get back to you. Thanks.
@@rking3724 for sure. Nothing yet!! But I'll definitely follow up if/when they do.
@@89G Good luck with that. I'm 100% sure they know.
@@peskypeet yep.... they know, but don't care either. Kinda sad.
I use Mobil 1 filters and oil.
M1 filters inlet holes are much larger elongated holes of at least 3x the area.
You might say ouch because theyre $3 more, every 5,000 miles, but hey,
you piss away more than $3-5 on frivolous shxt all the time.
I've never tried one... I'll have to look at those a little closer. Thanks!
Don't count out counterfeit filters making it into mainstream retailers. It has happened before. You may be looking at fakes.
Thanks! I've dealt with fake spark plugs already. Not good!
I own a few Ford cargo vans, and Crown Vic’s that run the 820-S I double checked my stash and thankfully none were the piece of crap champion made versions👍🤘🏻😎
I wish I had a stash. Protect those babies with your life, LOL!
Man pretty interesting. I've been using oem honda filters with my Race car, and now that I'm switching to the Fox I had planned to use Motorcraft filters on the 2.3..... now kinda second guessing it.... hmmmmm
I'd do WIX if I were you! Thanks for checking in. Can't wait to meet your Fox.
@89G yeah, that honestly seems like the smartest course of action. Lol. We'll be out at the Utah State Fairpark 4/14 for Autocross. Well have our Thunderbird and Williams Foxbody GT out racing!
@@DriftyBits Sweet... I'll have to swing by if I'm not rebuilding a trans. Do you ever drift or do auto-x at UMC? I live about 10 minutes from UMC.
@89G yes! We race at UMC quite often. I don't drift much very more. I've gotten more into Autocross and NASA Time Attack. I can give ya a heads up when our next UMC Event will be.
@@DriftyBits sweet, let me know for sure!
Personally I would buy more and cut them open with the thought that it may have just been a "bad batch" but even if it were I'm not sure I could trust them with my engine again. Does the box give a production location or a different "manufactured by" whoever? I'd be interested to hear what Ford says too.
All it says is Made in the USA on the sticker. I've opened probably 20 filters, and nothing looks the same... yet. It's somewhat easy to see what WIX and Fram make for other places. But this MC has me stumped.
Woah!!!! 🤯 More expensive and made cheaper at the same time 😡
Yep... take it on both ends! Lol. It's frustrating!
I wouldnt cut another one open. One junk filter is all I need to not buy another one.
Good point! I'll probably go exchange them for Wix.
I use Ford racing on my 03 cobra. I know they are expensive. I bought a bulk pack of 12 from Summit Racing a few years back when they were a lot cheaper than they are now.
I've never tried one of those. How do you like the quality?
@@89G the quality is excellent. The only thing is the canister is smooth. There’s no notches at the end to put a cap wrench on. You have to use a strap wrench even though I hand tighten the filter down certain times they’re a pain to get off. If I had a lift to where I can stand underneath and get better leverage, I’m sure they’d be a lot easier but when you’re laying on your back in the driveway, sometimes a pain.
@@kos2318 I really appreciate that info! I've been wanting to get the FL1A version and look at it. Like you're saying, I can only find them at Summitt, etc though
Cut away
I knew it i have a relative were they make those filters they are crap
Can you divulge where they are being made? I'm just curious who is making them now.
@@89Gmexico
@JuanGutierrez-jv3im good to know! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
@@89G any time ive been told that those filters are junk they use to be made in the us
@@JuanGutierrez-jv3im yes indeed!
You're hilarious, Purolator who made the OG FL1A filter got bought by Mann Hummel who makes the newer version. Guess who owns WIX??? MANN HUMMEL BTW pleat spacing has nothing to do with quality. Bitching on CZcams over a 4 dollar Walmart filter 😂😂😂 I buy a fram ultra synthetic, Purolator Boss or Wix XP. You're so worried about you precious Ford you wont spend 10 bucks on an oil filter.
Hey thanks for the criticism. Much appreciated Big Daddy.
great job on missing the point.
You’re a lot more precious than his Ford, sweetie…😂😂😂
That’s the new Biden can filter 😂
