  • Top diplomats from the EU are meeting via videoconference Friday with China's leaders to discuss urgent matters including the war in Ukraine, the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change. Chinese President Xi Jinping addressed the afternoon session with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Charles Michel and the EU's foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell. He called on the EU and China "to prevent spillovers of the crisis." Earlier they spoke with Li Keqiang, premier of China's state council. Li told his European counterparts China "opposes division of blocs and taking sides," a Chinese diplomat told German press agency DPA. State broadcaster CCTV said Li added China is pushing for peace in "its own way." Von der Leyen said after, "We made very clear China should not interfere with our sanctions."

    Question is, how come the EU has not intervened BEFORE the war broke out. It was under the eyes of everyone in EU the billions of dollars invested by the US in weapons and training to Ukraine, and the dramatic situation in Dombass. What's the purpose of having a costly EU apparatus if it's unable to operate when it's mostly needed? Besides, is EU autonomally assessing and pursuing its interests which are different from those of the US? I have many doubts.

      Secondly: you need to understand that the EU NEVER had anything to say about the competence of Defence. That was the choice of the member-states. They didn't want to release their sovereignty in this matter. It's as simple as that. Any initiative to cfhange this, was blocked by the UK, that feared that an EU-army was dangerous for the survibval of NATO. So, the EU had NEVER any soldiers under its jurisdiction.
      Thirdly: when we had the uncertainty of the Trump presidency, the member-states agreed to let the EU take it first steps into the field of Defence. To break the dependency of EU-nations from USA-weapons, the EU has been given the right to sponsor the development of new weapon systems on condition that at least 3 member-startes are working together on this new weapon system. The EU played the role of bank. That was all it was allowed to do.

    • @dirkgonthier101
      @dirkgonthier101 Před 2 lety +4

      Fourthly: now, thanks to the war in Ukraine (a crise, which is always good for the EU, because it always comes out of a crise stronger than it went in), the member-states have approved of an EU Rapid Reaction Force (5000 soldiers of which Germany proposed to be the heart). W.o.w. now, for the first time in its history, the EU has jurisdiction over 5000 soldiers. It still lacks the approval of the member-states to 'command' any more soldiers. |It was a long time on its way, this Rapid Reaction Force, but it used to be blocked by the UK, that thought that even this was dangerous for the survival of the NATO

    • @dirkgonthier101
      @dirkgonthier101 Před 2 lety +6

      Fifthly: you have to understand that also foreign policy is a competence where the EU has nohing to say about. This competence resides completely with the member-states. Of course, they talk about it, in the seat of the EU. And when they reach unanimity concerning something, the High Representative of the EU can come into action and can talk to foreign leaders about that specific topic. If unanimity isn't reachred, the the High Representative of the EU has to stay home.
      Sixtly: of course there are topics in which the interests of the EU member-states don't allign with the interests of the USA. You can give the international criminal court (warcrimes), as example. Or the treatment of the Palestinians by the Israelites.
