- So Across The Spider-Verse turned out to be a pretty good movie. In fact, it handled the whole multiverse thing better than Marvel ever did, and gave us a bunch of fun and likeable characters to root for along the way.

The spider-verse franchise is proof that we are not tired of superhero movies, we are tired of bad superhero movies.
Yeah but this an animated film too. Those tend to be more fun than the live-action films.

It’s got Spider-Man slapped on the poster of course it’s going to sell. Even when westerns were as dead as a doornail Clint Eastwood could still pack a theater. The Spider-Man logo alone will put butts in seats and a halfway decent story will keep them coming back.

Weak? The entire chase scene shows Peter is damn near miles ahead of the other Spiders while putting in half the effort. Man got a 1 on 1 talk, while the only other one who did was Miguel after quite literally clawing his way to it.

I kinda disagree with your take on Peter, besides the reduced screen time. He didn’t bring his daughter to a battlefield, he brought to a place surrounded by Spider-people, all of whom are heroes. We even see Miguel properly handle her too, and I think Peter brought her there in the first place to meet Miles. And even then, Peter was shown to think better than the other Spider-people, as he was able to quickly find Miles. The only gripe is how little screen time he got.
Yes. But what is your answer to this question, why did peter take his baby in the last scene? Peter knows he is going to a dimension with no Spiderman to get miles, so it will be pure chaos in there. Also spot might attack them on the way, so the baby just hold him back. So why did he take her in the last part of the movie? Also mj clearly asked him whether he took her to his job, and he lied. Now he is doing it again? You have to remember mj is not busy or anything, she is available at home to take care of the baby. But still peter is determined to bring mayday to wherever he goes, even it's danger . Why?

Think about it from MJ’s perspective; how could she look after a toddler who can climb up walls/swing to different buildings etc.

And for that reason they are not going to show peter in his classic suit or give him heroic personality, because then audience will quickly realise who real spider man is. I really liked Peter B Parker in both films. One of the common themes in Spiderman is that there is a price for these high flying heroics. We saw some of that in the second Sam Raimi film, but it really hits home with Peter B Parker who has done his best to protect NY from supervillians but gets the short end of the stick because the time spent on heroics left him with less time to take care of himself and the people he cares for. The fact that he kept putting on the suit when his life would be easier and more comfortable if he turned his back on heroics may be the most heroic thing about him. He's actually a lot more interesting than the blonde Peter Parker from Miles' own universe who had everything worked out.

I agree, he is maybe the most likable Spider-Man I’ve ever seen. That’s the whole point of this character, Spider-Man is the hero of the people, he has a strong correlation with everyone. If young Peter in the 60s, then Ultimate Peter in the 00s, etc.. they have a strong connection with young people, also the struggles of adult life… Peter B. Parker is the next stage so to speak, when you form a family and move on. Such a great character. I really hope Miles can reach this state of being relatable, because this character always felt so unnatural and forced, the initial comics written by Bendis are really bad, the PS4 games also, Miles feels like a anime protagonist who receives power ups from nowhere, no personality, no romantic interest, etc.. the character is super bland. Spider-Verse salvaged a lot, it gave him a personality (kinda, tying his aesthetics with hip hop is at least something), a romantic interest… and that’s it, it’s a work in progress. Let’s see if he will learn his lesson about responsibility… or if he will just be “whatever he wants” just to break the establishment. This second movie tries really hard to be “punk”, which is neat to some extent (hard to root for arrogant assholes, but Spider-Verse Miles is still in development), but let’s see how things are going to be wrapped up
I can't believe they briefly brought back Spectacular Spiderman. That show should have never been cancelled, thanks a lot Disney.
I was the most excited for his cameo. He had about 3 parts adding up to about 10 seconds I’d say.(not sure if you’ve seen it) his cameo was pretty lame tho and his line reinforces the villain but hopefully he does better in the second one.
The Spectacular Spider-Man is probably my favorite adaptation of the character, right next to Spider-Verse, Insomniac’s games, Sam Raimi’s trilogy and the 90’s cartoon. That show deserves to be concluded with the same writers.
In the german dub, the Peter in this series has the german voice of Tobey Maguire ❤❤
That show so masterfully introduced and maintained some of the coolest interactions of Spider-Man characters I've seen from Venom to Green Goblin to Molten Man. It's a crime it was canceled and I'm still salty to this day.

Peter B Parker. Is and was fantastic in both movies. He was effortlessly competent in being Spider-Man, but he lost his love for being Spider-Man and self confidence for being anything but spider-man. By mentoring Miles he rediscovered his love for Spider-Man and his faith in himself.
In across the Spider-verse we see that he has become a loving father, but is torn between doing what he feels is right and protecting his daughter.
A daughter who has super powers and so can not just be easily watched by mom.
I think his arc is wonderful.

Also what they did to Ben Reilly, making him a joke. For those out there he was for a brief moment Spider-Man, because Peter thought he was the clone, Aunt May just died, MJ was pregnant, all this things make Peter to quit so Ben became the real Spidey.

I really don't agree with that one. Gwen is just as much a protagonist in this part as Miles is. The damn movie even starts with her.
It’s not like the lead character has much to say anyway, Miles remains lost in a limbo. These movies are trying their best to further develop him, which is commendable, usually these side-kicks/token characters are extremely derivative (Batman has a literal “family” of characters like these), but Miles is very slowly developing into a actual character (he is very selfish and arrogant in this movie, that goes in-line with the “punk” nature of this sequel, but it’s a work progress, who knows how he will end up)
But that’s the problem, you’re not supposed to have two protagonists. The “second main character” is known as a deuteragonist. People wanted to watch the movie for Miles not Gwen

What I will say im genuinely surprised how well the film made the Spot into a terrifying villian after hes played off as a moron in the beginning with him showing Miles his future and his new character design after the collider explosion
That really impressed me as well. The transition from goofy side-villain to intimidating Big Bad was done so seamlessly and felt surprisingly natural.

I thought Peter B Parkers arc was great. He didn't get sidelined, he didn't get belittled or anything. He got over his mental health issues, reconciled with MJ and actually got a kid with her. We can see, that their relationship works great and he loves their kid dearly.
Also he is really proud of Miles and takes every opportunity to tell the other spiderpeople, that he himself was Miles' mentor and teacher.
And he always tries to diffuse the situation, because he knows and understands what Miguel is about and why things have to be the way they are. But he also loves Miles and doesn't want the kid to get hurt.
It's also nice to portray having children in a positive light. Such a low bar is rarely accomplished these days
I do hope that he gets to shine in a more direct way in the finale. A loving, supportive, caring mentor character deserves genuine respect, and he’s *still* Spiderman and deserves to show it. I’m ok with his treatment in this film because I have high hopes that he will get to rise in the 3rd act. Dads can still be awesome. Every dad who ever had to defend his family is proof of that

She's the one that sees Gwen for the trouble she's going through and forced Miguel into bringing her into the fold and becoming her mentor. Just like how Miles needs a male mentor I see how Gwen makes use of a female mentor that can relate to and support her at a level someone else wouldn't.
Idk Peter B Parker has that "I'm Him" energy that I'm glad they allowed him to have. Plus Peter being happily married and raising a kid is a very refreshing look for him if you know how the comics have treated him over the years!

I think the western audience understands the power of animation and that it is infact a medium but Hollywood doesn't seem to understand. Hope that maybe Spiderverse will pioneer longer animated films (only good ones and that are actually excusable) and a wide range of films that actually encapsulate the full scope of story's the medium can tell

Which is not the vibe I got from Peter B from the first movie but that's a choice... I guess. I can't tell if that was just an unintentional side effect of focusing on Gwen's arc though. It depends on how the third movie wraps things up because if it ends with Miles being right AND having no consequences and he just goes "LMAO, this wasn't a morally nuanced situation at all, everyone but me was just an idiot. I absolutely loved the visual element in this film, and found it geniously creative and lightyears beyond anything Pixar or Disney have done in recent times. I also liked how, like in Puss in Boots TLW, they used this animation in creative ways (framerate, color palette, style (oils, 3d, line drawing....) to reflect details and motifs of the story, and even to give cheeky hints to the viewer of things and reveals that are to come.
SPOILERS
For example, when Miles returns from the Spiderman central back into his universe, he's in this dark, emotional place, darting across the town to save his father. The animation seems to reflect that: his black and red suit darting accross the green rain really informs us of the mood and his mental state.
Only it informs us of much more than just that. This isn't the colour palette of his universe, but of universe 42 - that of his spider. It's a really great and subtle hint of the big reveal that is yet to come. I found it was absolutely genius.
TLW got those ideas from the spiderverse movies not the other way around but yeah I agree

I mostly agree, but for a keen-eyed vievers you can see "Earth-42" in the machine that sends him there at the end of the escape from spider society so it wasn't really a surprise.
5:32 To be honest, I actually LIKE Peter as the "bumbling father carrying his daughter around". If only because this version of Peter is actually allowed to move forward with his life and have a happy, successful marriage and family. Contrast this with the current state of Peter in the comics, where ANY attempt to evolve his character and give him something resembling a life is immediately erased by subsequent writers, this is far preferable.
In defense of the way they treat peter parker in these movies.
The peter in miles' home universe was a big shot where everything went right until one mistake cost him his life. Then he was celebrated as a hero.
Peter B Parker was an emotional wreck who made a lot of mistakes and led a miserable life. He wanted to sacrifice himself at the end of the first movie, and when he failed to do that, he went back to his universe and started turning his life around. Starting with getting back together with MJ and having a kid. I respect the redemption arc.
Agreed. His story arc and his relationship with Miles arc were mostly resolved in the first, while Gwen's really wasn't, and I think that's ultimately what led to her having so much screen time this time around. Instead of paring down the heavy moments for Miles and Gwen, which is what most movies do, the animators dropped the rest of the gang's (Noir, Penny, Spider-Ham) screen time where most movies would feel obligated to keep them all in for a false sense of completeness.
Yea, but they could've presented him completely different in this movie while maintaining the same character development from the first movie.
To be fair, if Miles wasn't there he definitely would have lived (Wow, Miguel was right or something!). Then again, it was still his fault for positioning the goober upside down. If he positioned it right on the first try he would have stopped the collider in the nick of time.
I think there was nothing to tell anymore. What we see in the sequel are the fruits of the growth he experienced in the first film and he is just fulfilled.
Yes. That was the point of showing him with his kid. Its a callback to him telling Miles he thinks he wants kids since meeting and mentoring him, in the last movie. Critical Drinker tries to invoke a really toxic ideology sometimes. So I would advise against letting him dictate how you should think. He had a really bad take on Peter B Parker, because of his own issues.
I really liked how this film really emphasized 2099's motivation and how even though he's right about many things, he still overlooks the flaws in his own crusade to protect the multiverse and how maybe some stories aren't meant to play out as intended.
He isn't really 2099 though. They for some reason revamped his entire story to take away what made him unique. He no longer has access to time travel although somehow they can predict the future? His mission was to stop Alchemax but now it was he wanted a family (that was just Kingpin's from the first one). Spider-Man 2099 was not this Miguel O'Hara. Hell they even gave him a separate universe even though he is just the Spider-Man of the future
@@Antonio-ys5zd I mean they have implicitly indicated time travel anyway. If the spider that bit miles was one that was supposed to bite a Peter then the spider had to have traveled forward in time as well as across the universe to bite miles after the Peter in his universe was already spider man.

Yeah the time lines line up to the same period when it's convenient for them to do so and they don't when it isn't. Gotta take away time control because they are already struggling with the multiverse plot.

Yes based on just the very minor details not a single time frame is measured between universes such as how Peter had Mayday in what Miles said was only a few months to maybe a year. And their multiverse does hold various flaws but time travel is easy enough to incorporate but would easily resolve all conflict
I don't exactly like what they did to Peter, but Mary-Jane is not a mother perfectly capable of looking after the baby. Their child has Spider-powers. Only someone else with super powers would be able to handle her. Peter not only has the ability to keep up with her , but also has his spider sense which would constantly tell him when she's in potential danger. That being said, there is no excuse for him taking his baby to a potential dimension ending mission and it's something Peter would never do. Universe has it's own superheroes with badass powers that can and even surpasses Peter's own powers for a sitter to be with MJ while Peter goes off to an actual real life or death situation with no holds bar. What's good about the cliffhanger is that we are not sure how it will all play out. It is an entire mystery, with plot points for fans to discuss. It makes me feel like the beginning of the Infinity Saga again. That's how you make a great franchise. You keep people on the edge of their seats, instead of spoon feeding every details and mystery of the movie.

She's even encouraging Miles' parents to tell that their son is gonna be okay. Since he just become a dad and Miguel has saved his universe before so he will not fall in the same way. Or worse case scenario, Miles' dad gonna die like what canon event has to be.

Miles still has more screentime and the focus is on him proving that he is Spiderman and him getting powers wasn't a mistake. The next part will go more into that. Disagree with the opinion on Peter B Parker. At the start of the first movie he had low self esteem and was self-destructive leading to the dissolution of his marriage. He said he was frightened at the thought of having children. But at the end of the first movie he took a “leap of faith” and reconciled with MJ. Him having Mayday and being a happy dad shows a positive character progression from the first movie. He’s accepted himself to take the risk of being a parent and is clearly much happier in his relationship with MJ. He was still portrayed to be a good mentor despite the other characters attempting to dig at him & and they were all proven wrong each time. It didn’t feel like the story was undermining him at all. He’s also always been a more comic relief lovable loser type of character as well and his portrayal was absolutely in line with how he was established in the first movie, just evolved and matured.

I think the tedium of Miles' talks with his parents is intentional and honestly pretty accurate to experiences I've had and seen throughout my life. As a teenager you have a lot you want to tell your parents that just doesn't seem to come out. Getting choked on feelings and secrets and of course the fear of what your parents will say when you actually do get the truth out is an all too real feeling that, even as a grown man, I still get sometimes. It's frustrating, but it's real, and for that I really appreciated the movie going there, even if it did start to feel like padding at times.

I agree fully. I found the repetitive conversations to add a feeling of legitimacy and authenticity. What teenager just had a talk with their parents and then everything is resolved?
The way they did it felt real to me, not redundant. I really appreciate the character development, the time devoted to Miles and his parents, and the breathing room they gave that relationship.

I know what you mean, and that's a good observation, IMO. Parents can be very hard to talk to. I'm an older guy and mine still try to talk to me as if they necessarily know more than I about virtually any possible subject, even those which they clearly know nothing about. And as if I should always hear their opinion about everything. And at length. And then once or twice again. Beyond tedious, not nice, and in no way useful.

100%. I think those slower scenes were a risky, but ultimately important, part of the movie. The buildup of the tension between the parents and Miles is resolved there as Rio (mom) acts like the mom that sees more of her boy than Miles realizes. Her entire speech to him about not forgetting the little boy and making sure no one tells him he doesn't belong is the inner push he needs when he is told by Miguel that he doesn't belong and is an anomaly. Spiderverse has always balanced this well, and they basically were able to recreate the triumphant What's up Danger moment in a longer time frame than the first, where Captain Jefferson tells Miles that he sees a spark in him. I'm honestly surprised people seem to have missed that.
And lastly, the breakneck pace of a lot of the other parts of the film really needed the slower burn of these intro scenes. People seem to misconstrue gravity and breathing room for filler since most movies are made to shave off every single possible excess they can, but what that creates are the standard MCU movies. The runtime was long in this movie because there was too much to do, and clearly what they chose to shave off here was really any development of invested characters in the first (Noir, Penny, Spider-Ham) so that they wouldn't need to sacrifice Gwen's, Peter B Parker's, and Miles.
5:40 Nah, they gave Peter B. Parker a marriage and a kid bcuz the perennial Spidey fans have wanted that of him since the 90s. He's funny without being a mockery, wise without being overt, and improved in the sense of him finding an equilibrium in life that only happened because Miles showed him teaching a new generation can be rewarding.
Peter represents the filmmakers and their positive view of parenthood being a growing and learning experience, with hurdles to be sure, but rewarding if done with love and attention.

This further shows to me the incompetence of Disney’s attempts at live action. Animation is a medium where ANYTHING is possible. Expressions, action, and explosions of color are amazing to behold. Live action with some films are fine, but there is simply zero replacement for the unique story telling of animation. A huge bravo to the designers and artists of this film! Loved it!!!

if anything I think it's fan service. a lot of people were endeared to his portrayal in the first movie. and this is him+being a cute dad archetype who mentors Miles. this gives him some purpose in being there while putting him aside so he isn't able to overshadow the other Spidermen too much

I actually really like Peter in the film. He is an older character who is a dad, and hecka proud of it. He wears the baby carrier with grace *remember there was a time when weirdos would say a dad wearing that was awful and not masculine while at the same time complaining man never help* He's chilling going around with comfy slippers and a bathrobe with no shame. I never took it as the writer trying to put him down. More like, his priority is his daughter. He is one of my favs. ❤

I saw this movie last saturday and I f*cking loved it. I enjoyed the spot as a villain, he started off goofy asf, and it actually got a laugh out of me. Who would have expected that the guy who got clonked with the bagel miles chucked would have turned into a supervillain. Excited to see what BTSV brings, and seeing Miles as the prowler caught me off guard, but I'm excited for that also

I think the idea of a spider death-cult that is the product of these shared traumas becoming hallowed myths and rites of passage is fascinating. People often think of individuals who get suckered into cults as being dumb or evil but the reality is that it's more about the right persona coming with the right story that helps you deal with your personal trauma.
It's not about being gullible but about being vulnerable. It's not a mistake that Gwen and Miles both talk about how alone they feel in the beginning of the movie, how they have nobody else they can talk to about being super heroes. They can't even talk to their parents about it.
Then they get brought in by some impressive outsiders who totally get what they're going through. Not only do they get it, they tell you all the bad shit that happened to you is actually part of a larger design that will lead to you having really happy moments later! That's a compelling story lots of cults use to get people to come in, and it's also part of how they get otherwise normal, rational and benevolent people to tolerate or inflict abuse onto others.

This film is insanely clever even in the small moments, like how spider punk steals the chip from the wall and that’s what ends up being added to the multiverse watch he delivers to Gwen.
As well as when he says he doesn’t believe in consistency and that’s why his art style changes throughout the movie.
And I always sat there thinking the film was was about to end and they added layer upon layer or one extra twist.
I think they’ve given themselves an almighty task to write themselves a satisfying conclusion especially as they’ve written themselves 3 antagonists to miles in (SPOILER) Spot, Miguel and Prowler Myles…

Ehhh I don't agree with that Peter B. Parker take. In all honesty if you look at his actions throughout the 1st and 2nd films and look past the humor you'll find that he's... pretty much been the most effective Spider-Person we've seen.
His only missteps and mistakes are due to him glitching or Miles messing up in the 1st film. He's the first one to actually track down Miles and catch him clean in the 2nd.
The first go around in the Spider Society is perfectly okay to bring a kid with as he's going to negotiate with Miles in an area where it's majority copies of him. It might be genuinely be the safest place in the multiverse for May on paper.
Also him being a stereotypically, over joyful dad is just added character development especially when you compare him now to how he first appeared.
The Peter we get is probably the best and most well-rounded version of Peter Parker we've had that I can remember. If you had to be protected by any Peter Parker we've seen outside of the comics then Peter B. Parker is probably your best bet on paper.

Yep, he wasn't all fluff. He provided the moderate tone to Miguel's over-the-top edge. There was less actual 'growth' in this movie though because his personal character arc and relationship with Miles arc was mostly resolved in Into the Spider-Verse. Which was probably why Gwen got a lot more screen time here. Her personal story was never resolved and her relationship with Miles in the first also never became clearly defined.
100%. Plus its super realistic and closer to the comics. An older Peter with years of being spiderman would be exhausted. He's happy with his little girl because she is one of the first things that has brought him joy in years. And he deserves it. I love to see it.

I think part of why they had Peter's baby be on screen so much was to show that he had gotten his life together and was happy, also the kid is a version of May "mayday" Parker A.K.A. Spider Girl (Marvel's first Spider Girl) who went from being the main character of a single throw away issue of the anthology series What If? to having her own title that not only lasted a record setting length of time but helped spawn a bunch of other much less popular titles set in the same universe.
in short the baby herself is a version of a pretty popular character and represents Peter x MJ, a pairing/romance that many fans Spider-man really like.
This is the best film of any kind I’ve seen in a while. I didn’t know it was a part one, that may have helped. While I did notice how long it was, I wasn’t bored at all. I was just amazed at how much was in it and how well it all worked.

I'm a bit surprised how many critics go for the duration, personally it went by super quick for me and enjoyed every minute. For me they could have gone for 1h more with those gorgeous paintings all over. I loved the style of Gwen's universe, by far my favorite, but the fact that they changed the style during the movie made it way more enjoyable, kind of like going to a museum and going through the different expositions (on top of watching an awesome movie).
I was just in awe and appreciated that we got a dedicated prologue to show an arc for Gwen and a conclusion as well later in the movie. I never would have expected to see an in-depth adaptation of her story in any on-screen media.
This. I wasn't bored for a second and the scenes with Miles' mom were golden. After Puss in the Boots it's finally yet another animated movie where the story can breathe, characters talk to and with each other.

They said the PLOTS were balanced well, meaning that there was sufficient time allotted to both plots to allow for each one to feel properly setup. The feeling of a hard stop at the ending is more so an attribute of smoothness and resolution than it is balance. The difference is that it’s not supposed to feel smooth or resolute because the next movie is a continuation.

Civil war, not that much. I think once Gwen and her team find miles they are gonna end up fighting Earth 42 Miles. Miguel’s focus is on the spot but u think he will have a change of heart and if I to predict who will make the hero’s sacrifice it will he him.
One of the directors - Joaquim Dos Santos - was a lead writer for Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005-2008). Beyond the Spider-Verse will likely have phenomenal payoffs.

That decision meant that the entire Water Tribe had to be European. There was a ton of location scouting done which resulted in the film originally being mainly shot in Greenland. Then the budget was pushed towards VFX which resulted in the only on-location shooting being done on the cheap. The executives also had Shyamalan rewrite the movie into the final film.
Peter B Parker is exactly where we wanted Spidey to be in the comics for years. He's happy, with MJ, good situated and still enjoys being Spider-Man. He was the most capable among the spider people chasing Miles and that while carrying his baby and not really trying to stop him but talk to him because he cares about Miles and doesn't want to betray him

Didn’t mind the Peter stuff. He took his kid who seems capable into a lair of nothing but alternative versions of himself which would look out for her as well even in a chase.
And with all the stuff going on the comics, it’s actually refreshing to see Peter Parker just as a simple, happy, stereotypical dad, which is a life he’s earned. He still was very capable as Spider-Man to me.

I really liked Peter B. He finally has what no other Peter Parker was able to achieve, a balance between his life as Spider Man and Peter, and being able to live both fully, as seen by him pretty effortlessly and jovially taking care of his baby throughout all the chaos
Exactly! Spiderman (and any superhero tale) centers around balancing life and saving the world, and Peter Bs arc resolves very satosfyingly to a point where he can do both.
The first half of this movie felt like it was on Adderall, the art style is unique and beautiful at times, but at others it looks like the storyboard concept art that made it into the final product.
I'm in the same boat on Miles Morales. Comic book fans say he's just a race swapped token Peter Parker, but in the first movie and the newest Spider-Man games, he's a well-written and compelling character I like quite a bit.
Thing is, he WAS a race-swapped Peter Parker when they introduced him in the comics. Into the Spiderverse is the first iteration where he's his own character with his own story. Sony breathed life into Miles' story where it had little before
The take on the comics is true. So glad they changed him up and made him amazing in the movie. He may be my favorite Spider-Man now.
He is a derivative character and he needs his own identity and own super hero name.
There was a very short period of time he was known as "Kid Arachnid", and if they'd of stuck to their guns and kept him with his own identity I guarantee more people would be receptive of him. I see a lot of people assume people don't like Miles "because he's a black Spider-Man", when the reality (in most cases at least) is that people just want him to be his OWN CHARACTER and to stop riding the coattails of Peter Parker. I personally like what Into the Spider-Verse tried to do with him, (as well as the first Insomniac game) even if I still feel they couldn't fully break him free of "Peter Parker knock-off" syndrome.
Also, lesser complaint, why did they raceswap Jessica Drew when we already had a black Spider-Woman way before Jessica Drew ever took the moniker? Valerie the Librarian would have been perfect for that spot, and would have been a fun way to introduce a lesser known Spider character, BIG missed opportunity there. Jessica Drew isn't even a traditional "Spider person" to begin with, but whatever, nerd rant over 😅

These movies really did a great job not just with Miles but being able to re-imagine the Spider-Verse storyline
Honestly I don’t mind at all that it’s split into two parts, I also don’t mind having A lot of scenes where they flesh out supporting characters, I love the character they’ve created and I’m glad we get twice as much of them. Yeah this first film lacks resolution but it hooked me in so hard that I can’t wait for the next. Also, when the third one does come out eventually, watching them both back to back will be an insane experience
Gwen stacy being a better 'spiderman' than miles would make sense since she's has a longer experience

Experience does not neccesarily equal power or even ability. Based on his set of powers she shouldn't be better than him. The reason they did it has nothing to do with in world logic but more about "the massage" when it comes to female empowerment.

I absolutely fucking abhor that shit. That's the reason why I still have yet to play Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 2. Got a big fat "to be continued" after ending the first one and was so pissed I got rid of the game. There was also lack of enjoyment in the game, esp considering how badass Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain was, but it was that non-ending that just pissed me off.
Yeah a guy behind me said that too. Fortunately I heard already that it’s basically Part 1 so I was able to hold back my vocal reaction, but it still felt disappointed. It was basically like watching a whole season of a tv show and then waiting for the next season
I took my two daughters to see this and 1. It was far too long for them!! 2. It was incredible. As an amateur artist, my brain HURT analysing the magnificent amount of detail that went into every shot.

It deserves at least five rewatches because hot damn, there are literally too many details that can't possibly be seen on a first outing.
Yes it’s too long and repetitive in places but the whole concept of an accidental alternative Spider-Man, the plot, the character building the Easter eggs etc make these movies the best thing I’ve watched in years. But above all that they are literally works of art.. absolutely incredible to look at .
The stumbling bumbling peter , was easily and quite leisurely keeping up with all of the spiderpeople. What they showed us is that hes a good mentor too

He is supposed to be presented as a badass hero in action but also as a very smart character with some nerdy elements. What they did in this movie was purposefully removing his agency and emasculating him on screen by positioning him as the nanny and that includes deliberate visual elements to further emphasize his diminished secondary role. That was a conscious decision by the writers and it's not difficult to understand why they did it. It's the same reason for what they've been doing in the video games including the upcoming one and the same reason they've announced a new Miles Morales live action movie. There is a very obvious end goal here by Sony and Marvel.
Peter is the good guy, the underdog, and the "friendly neighbor". It makes sense to me that he takes joy in a more traditional family life...
I think I have to disagree with your opinion about how they handled Peter. There's nothing more masculine than being a dad, and he's a good one at that. The pink bathrobe to me is just a silly symbol that constantly reminds us that he's a dad and has a family to take care of. He's definitely flawed, but that's exactly how I want him to be. I don't want him to be portrayed as a Mary Sue who's good at everything and never does anything wrong. I like that he has to redeem himself.
yeah I agree but I do wish some peters could be more apart of the plot ,that’s really my only complaint most of the spider men/women they introduced have stuck the landing for me peter b as well.But having more peters in this story would be nice too.
I loved how this movie had built up a more mature and emotional story, that continued on the previous story. The animation was incredible, and the tension between Gwenn and Miles was really good
Yeah, its weird to see Peter B. Parker bringing him and MJ's daughter with him in Across the Spider-Verse, but hey, considering Marvel Comics editorial STILL refuses to undo One More Day sixteen years later and let mainline Peter Parker be a Spider-Dad while Miles Morales covers the young relatable Spider-Man niche, I speak on behalf of the Spider-Man fandom when I say its nice to see other pieces of Spider-Man media take deliberate potshots at Marvel's refusal to let Peter Parker grow up.
Honestly, if you wanna have a new kid in the Spider role, then there's really only two ways for Peter to go. Either retired/dead mentor, or he has to be the Spider Dad, bringing in that whole dynamic and the new problems/stories that can bring. The nice thing about multiverses, is that you can do both.
I thought there's still a line of comics set in that universe where Peter and MJ have a daughter who inherited his powers. I 'member one arc having the Xavier Institute for the Gifted inviting her to enroll, basically joining The X-Men.

@@louisduarte8763 That was the Spider-Girl comics, set in the near future/alternate reality with May-Day Parker grown up into a teenager and living life as a superhero, with support from Peter and MJ who had already lived through both ends of trying to balance being a hero and having a normal life. After One More Day Joe Quesada told people that if they wanted married Spider-Man they could read that comic, and so pretty much overnight it became the best selling Spiderbook Marvel had. In a fit of rage Quesadilla cancelled it despite it's massive success.
What stood out to me the most was how Miguel harped on the exclusivity of his team and the immense danger posed by having multiple spider people in the same universe at the same time, but his base has what looks like hundreds of thousands of spider people in one universe. Most of which are just hangin out like it was some sort of mall. Made it really unclear how his whole operation works.
Your rant on Peter B Parker is rather misguided. Almost like all the woke movies with obsessive agendas behind race and gender, I think you dove into this review hyperfocusing too much on race and gender and ended up missing the point on what was just supposed to be a caring fatherly character.
I just wish it had at least a half-standalone ending. the way it ended makes it feel like someone stopped the movie midway through and told you that you can watch the rest in a few months/years, but only if you pay full price again.

That was the original plan, this movie was supposed to be released and part two a year later, like Dune.
Yeah it’s really really jarring. The main central plot in this movie is that Miles has to escape to save his dad. That’s it. It really feels like this movie was 70% set up. I think the movie could have benefited from a longer cut. Maybe just one scene where Miles breaks free and swings off into the city of the new world. And maybe add in a fight scene between 2099’s group and Gwen’s group. Have them come to blows before the Spot shows up and then he just knocks them all away. End credits
Movie literally ends at the beginning of the 3rd act. Shouldve been marketed as a part one so people wouldnt feel so blueballed imo.

4:46 See, here's my contention, I think the issue is seeing her as a supporting character. Given how the entire intro was about her and developing her, i think it's safe to put her as main character in her own right. This would basically put her as the protagonist and miles the dueteragonist. And i think this can be supported with the rest of the film as we never really leave her perspective but for the time we spend with miles, until they meet again, at which point they're either together or time is split between the two.
For an analogy i can pull from, it's the original pirates of the Caribbean where we're introduced into the 2 protagonists of the story, William and I think Emily. They're roughly the first 10 to 15 minutes of the movie up until the introduction of captain Jack sparrow. Jack sparrow is basically the third protagonist in the film, but he's used as more as a major supporting character as he is only ever shown at the side of the two protagonists having moved from one to the other. This translates to our perspective actually being on Emily and William at any given time which puts them as the protagonists and not Jack.
To tie this in, we see Gwen and Miles used in exactly the same fashion. We don't really break from either of their perspectives and they're the only ones given that level of time and development. This implies it's their story together, not just miles, much like how Pirates of the Caribbean was William's and Emily's together, not just William's or Jack's.

It was nice to see a movie about honesty. Thats what this whole movie to me was about. The anxiety of being truthful with your family. Sure lying in the short term might feel better but down the road the people who you lie too just happen to be those that would go to the end of the earth for you. Its nice to actually see people struggling to be something they are not. Its nice to see someone trying to do everything and fail at doing it at the same time.
A six-month pregnant Spider-woman jumping off of buildings and getting into fistfights? Nice "how to induce a miscarriage" subplot Sony.

Spider-verse does more for multiverse ideas in a single film than MCU has managed to with several films. What's scary about this film is that it packs more creativity in any fifteen minute period than most films have in their runtime. The art styles, productions values, and animation tricks... I felt like I was somehow watching the worlds more cogent acid trip but not feeling lost in the slightest. It isn't quite as strong as the original on its own purely because it isn't a completed arc like "Into" was. Likelihood is that how I feel about this film will be altered by how "Beyond" sticks the landing. That said it is absolutely amazing and I feel spoiled by the film. We have had an embarrassment of true treasures between this and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish in this last year. Sony Pictures Animation truly is treading into dangerous frontier with a boldness you rarely see.

It was a phenomenal movie, so impressed. The scenes with Gwen and her dad 😢🤧, When Miles was running home in the last scenes and how complex the art and thought montage. Just so much awesome perfection.
This could be the first year ever where an animated superhero movie can outgross all of its live action competitors , bigger opening day than guardians 3 , highly impressive
My one major concern is that when I came out of the film, I was on nobody's side. I understand where Miles is coming from, but Miguel reveals things that make it hard for me to not wanna believe Miles isn't thinking all the way. As long as the third film comes to both sides learning something and still challenge Miles in what he's trying to do, then we should be good.
