- Runaway by AURORA: A Nico Robin Animatic!
Hopefully the video speaks for itself, but here are my thoughts behind my little project:
In the beginning of this year, my brain was filled with AURORA music from Sky's virtual concerts and One Piece from my manga and anime binging. One day, listening to this song, something clicked: it was Robin's song, telling her story perfectly--searching for something, constantly on the run, even from happiness, and eventually finding a home with the Straw Hat crew. Months later, I sat down and decided to draw the animatic, and it's finally here.
This animatic is a retelling of Nico Robin's story up to the conclusion of Enies Lobby, a mix of images that came to me as I listened to the song and canon scenes from the series that found their way into the boards because they were so iconic, embedded in my memory. It has been my longest storyboarding project so far, in terms of both project duration and animatic length, and I had a blast making it. If you like AURORA's music, enjoy Runaway for the umpteenth time. If you like One Piece, enjoy the trip down memory lane. And if you like both, I hope you enjoy watching twice as much, like I do.

This animatic has me speechless. Robin is my favorite Strawhat, and this video reminded me of every reason I adore her story.
0:24 Your ability to show deep emotions in only a few seconds is incredible. Robin drawing a picture of her and her mother, only to have her mother’s face erased by the ocean-it needs no explanation. It’s perfectly heartbreaking.
I love how you were unafraid to make things symbolic. Like… not every scene in this video is “realistic” but the symbolism works so well.
Robin dreaming about the Strawhats climbing a tree at 0:36 and then 0:46 “I saw a piece of heaven waiting impatient for me” with Robin seeing the Strawhat’s backs and then running toward them is so good. It just builds the feeling that she’s been waiting for them, for a FAMILY, her whole life. It’s like… through all the suffering she went through, when her mother told her to run and live, and when Saul told her to run and find her friends, the STRAWHATS were what she was running toward! Even if she didn’t know it!
And then at 2:16 she sees them laughing and exploring again but it isn’t a dream anymore because she’s WITH THEM! She made it!
0:41, 1:26, 1:37 Robin’s own hands help her up the tree.
The symbolism you’ve created with hands is phenomenal. When Robin reaches for a hand, no one is there to catch her when she falls because she’s alone. Robin’s own hands pull her up again and again because the only person who helps her is herself.
I’m taking a moment to appreciate your animation real quick. Robin kicks her little feet while walking on the beach! When she gets out of the water her hair looks wet! When she dances in the rain it’s so fluid and beautiful! Your expressions and perspective is SO GOOD! I’m in love with your art!
The way you match the lyrics to the animation is perfect especially the lines “Take me home where I belong” and “I can’t take it anymore,” those hit hard every time.
The way you drew Robin joining the Strawhats is everything. It’s Luffy’s happy smile when he decides to trust her despite everything. It’s Robin making the boys laugh. It’s her face of confusion and awe when Nami gives Robin her first hug in decades. It’s Sanji bringing her food to support her while she does what she loves. It’s the way Robin covers Zoro with a blanket because for all the world calls her heartless, the moment Robin finds people she can safely love she INSTANTLY starts loving and caring for them. It’s how HAPPY Robin looks (2:15) exploring Skypia and being with people who support her dream. It’s Robin getting to read a poneglyph and reclaim a little of the home she’s lost to “take me home where I belong.” It’s all of it. Everything about this sequence is flawless, it says so MUCH in so little time.
Another little moment to appreciate your animation. I adored the tiny shot at 2:14 so much because it only lasts for a second but it’s so full of character. Also color coding the Strawhats is genius, it makes them so easy to see.
2:30 The acceptance in her face is killing me. To Robin, the dream is over and she’s finally going to die.
The parallel between the sequences at 1:47-1:56 and 2:36-2:46 is so emotional. Because this is what Robin does when everything goes wrong: she walks away and she lies and she fights and she ends up alone. It’s all she knows how to do. The difference is, the first time she’s desperate to save herself and the second time she’s desperate to save those she loves. I just love how you told her story so much.
Also Robin’s expression at 2:44 is making me feel an indescribable emotion.
2:52 “And i kept running for a soft place to fall” cause Robin keeps running! She’s running away! She’s running toward something but she doesn’t know what! You get it!
3:08-3:16 “Take me home where I belong, I got no other place to go” BECAUSE SHE DOESN’T! THIS IS THE END OF EVERYTHING FOR ROBIN, SHE HAS NOTHING! SHE HAS NO WHERE TO GO! BUT HER FAMILY COMES FOR HER AND TAKES HER HOME!
3:16-3:21
AND THEN THE FIRE BECOMES OPEN HANDS BECAUSE SHE ISN’T ALONE ANYMORE! PEOPLE ARE FINALLY THERE TO HELP HER! TO CATCH HER WHEN SHE FALLS!
(This is the exact moment I started crying while writing this.)
AND SHE ACCEPTS THE HANDS! SHE ACCEPTS THEIR HELP! SHE ISN’T ALONE ANYMORE!
3:25-3:50
And then Robin runs and falls again but she’s coming home to Merry this time and she’s with her family. And Robin gives them wings! They’re all flying and Robin did that for them! And Robin holds Chopper and it’s adorable!

3:57 Maybe I’m reading into this too much but the shooting star is like… “make a wish.” And Robin has been wishing her whole life, but this time she just smiles and goes to sleep because she’s home. She has her dream (the book, her research) and her family and she doesn’t need to wish anymore.
Anyway, this is a long comment but the moment I watched this I knew I needed you to know how much I adore it. You’ve combined one of my all time favorite characters with an amazing song and amazing art to tell a beautiful story. Thank you so much for sharing your work!

I actually reread it when I need a mood-lifter 🥲 Thank you so so much for your attention to detail and thorough breakdown of my animatic and what you appreciated about it! It was amazing to me to read your comment because it was like you were in my head for the planning process. You highlighted so many things--the message of Robin waiting her whole life for her found family, the parallels between the sequences for the "running far away" chorus, the "no other place to go" and how she runs one last time but towards her happiness in the end. You even caught the book in the end, which I did keep as a recurring motif through the whole thing, even when she "gives it up" in a way before putting on the Miss All Sunday persona :') Your comment and attentiveness make me indescribably happy and proud of what I've made, since it was positively picked apart by such a big Robin fan! As a storyteller, it's encouraging to know that the ideas and visuals I had in mind came across. Thank you again!
This is an amazing analysis and the only thing I have to add is that I LOVE the fact that at 3:39 Sanji and Zoro are acting as Luffy's wings. Because Robin said that Sanji was one of the wings of the King of the Pirates.

The poneglyph falling on top of Robin, about to crush her is fantastic and pretty simbolic: her knowledge, and Ohara's legacy quite literally nearly destroying her

3:39 I love that in this shot Sanji and Zoro are searving as the left and right wings of the (unconsious) Pirate King. When I first saw it I thought that Luffy has his own 2 wings and Zoro and Sanji each had one wing while holding him up, but I'm pretty sure they are each meant to have 2 and are carrying Luffy. Either way it turns out in the final animation, the fact that they are serving as his wings.
Hey I know this is late and not really the point. But that wings thing was likely a bad translation. Sanji is Luffy's wings playing off his ability to sky walk and his mother being named Sora. Zoro is likely Luffy's earth playing off how he tends to ground the strawhats (mostly Luffy) and his mother being named Tera. Jimbei being the third son of the sea really rounds out.
This video reminded me why Robin is my favorite strawhat, not that I'd forgotten, but the raw EMOTION you wrung out of me with this is so wild. When I saw it only had about 250 views I was FLABBERGASTED. This deserves Millions.

3:11 this was a genius shot. How the flames on the flag of her suppressor turn into the arms Straw Hats reaching out for Robin, their family.
Going through Water Seven and Enies Lobby I realized how much fire recurred as an image BUT it had a different connotation when the Straw Hats were there 🥹 I'm glad you appreciate it!

Thank you so much for watching!! I knew in the beginning I wanted a Nami hug scene and expanded it to show Robin interacting with the rest of the crew. Then the "I want to live" scene is just so iconic; how could I not include it? 🤧
Oh man this perfectly encapsulated Robin's emotional arc and really got me thinking about how Luffy's charm and kind of the point of the strawhat pirates is that he can turn anyone into a child again, and that anyone can change. That scene where she joins them after Alabasta really reads like an adult humoring children, but it very quickly changes into her becoming one of them, and reconnecting with her childlike self, when she starts to play with the strawhats and rediscover her passion. This is really incredible! and the storyboard and art are so well crafted as well!! well done!

This was so freaking incredible, I'm extremely impressed!!!! I really love how much emphasis you put on the Going Merry being her home, cause that's an angle that I hadn't thought of before but it's so obvious now that you pushed it to the forefront. Incredible!!!!
Wow thank you!! The "home where I belong" line was what made me first think of the connection to Robin, actually! I'm glad my focus on her home with the Straw Hats/the Merry came across well!

It never left my mind, how she would rather go back being a dog of the world government, than one day have the straw hats look at her and not want her anymore. She'd rather endure physical and mental torture, than hear the crew say she's a burden. The thought of this crew (whom she'd known for barely a month but already absolutely fell in love with) leaving her, hurts more than anything she'd suffered. Oh god, i love her story so much..

Robin is definition of found family, her arc I cried, I relate to her so hard, I got her devil fruit tattooed on my chest to keep a remind that "I want to live"

I love the detail of robin always having herself (thematically her DF) to climb any hurdles that comes along her path. Since she hadn't had anyone to help her, she had considered herself her only crutch in this cruel world.
But the one hurdle she couldn't climb (the world itself) the hands of her friends pull her through the cruelty that is the world.

I don’t even watch one piece, but I am in the middle of the video and I started crying and getting so happy
all this time *sniff sniff* she had no one to lend her a hand except herself, but the last scene *sniff* the flowers bloom and it's the other straw hats hands *screaming, crying, throwing up* 😭oh Robin. I'm so glad this strong and beautiful woman has found people who will fight for her no matter what
The only thing that stopped me from crying was that I'm in class. This is an amazing piece of art, and you understand intimately why Robin is One Piece's greatest treasure.

Man, the variing and creative shots, the movements in them, the different visual metaphors you chose to transition between the sections and from subject to subject... amazing, truly, i literally already started tearing up when i saw this video reccomended and then the tears started flowing and getting worse throughout the whole video!!! many many good emotional storybeats and synched up wonderfully with the different climaxes of the song, and ugh. as someone who also has assigned robin to this song for ages now, you hit the nail on the head.

In love with the fact that in the first part of the video the only hand that was extended to her was her own, kind of showcasing she was on her own, only herself and her powers to lean on
and in the later part there are multiple hands extended to her with different colors (yknow the strawhats) symbolizing she's got others to help her now and she's no longer on her own
I really love the symbolism of the shots here but this one really stuck out to me
That scene where they went up knock up stream really stood out to me. Somehow symbolised a real turning point in her story. The whole animation also has such a nice pace.

I'm glad you appreciated the Knock-Up Stream scene! Going through Robin's story in my head over and over, I wanted to find a turning point, like you said, for her after leaving Baroque Works. I needed to sell the happiness before I brought in the pain haha

I've always loved how her devilfruit ability fits her in the sense that the only one to hold her hand is herself. Her only wish as a child was to hold her mothers hand and tyat was taken from her. So you can't blame her for not believing anyone would ever again reach out for her in any meaningful way until now.
I’ve always associated this audio with robin. The constant need to run, the lies, and the emotion in the song made me associate it with her trauma.

a work of art! loved how you prepared us for robin's fruit hands turning into the crew reaching out for her by the scene in the beginning and how sanji and zoro are the wings of the pirate king. the scene with the kid versions of the crew climbing the tree was so haunting and heartwarming at the same time my favorite part! i went frame by frame to see zoro getting lost and sanji yelling at him to turn back around and usopp helping chopper while luffy helped nami i could die from this

I love how Zoro and Sanji are holding up Luffy with each a wing it gives off from Robin speach in Wano. If it's intentional that's really neat.
Yes! I wanted Luffy to be part of the flying but since it was post Enies Lobby he was unable to move, so I thought having his Wings carry him was a fun workaround!

I love how all the hands reaching for her in the start were her own, showing that she only has herself to help her. Now, the hands have changed to the crew’s. Beautifully done 💕
This made cry with a smile, I love Robin! She may not be my fav Mugi, but she is my favorite female character. I love how much emotion went into this
WHAAAT?!?! THIS IS INSANE!!! Every shot is incredible, the changing perspective, the transitions, the fluid character animation, the layout of each shot, the facial expressions, the sheer BREADTH of Robin's story this covers??? I am in awe, putting aside how much of a masterpiece this is technically, it evokes so much emotion, it really amplifies the lyrics.

That last bit where they all got wings, I'm crying as hard as she did when she proclaimed that she wanted to live
I love how thru out the animatic, Robins been using her own arms to pull herself, showing how for most of her life shes had to relie on herself. But then at the end the rest of the strawhats hold out there arms, showing how shes no longer alone.
This animation is what made me finally start One Piece la few days ago! I’m on S1 episode 50, and so far I’m loving it!

i adore this animatic so much. the first time i watched it i cried. this song is such a perfect choice for robin, and the way you draw her is so beautiful. Her expressions are done so well, and the lonely isolation she feels when shes running her whole life shows very clearly in ur work. I truly love this animation so much, robins one of my fave strawhats n this makes me appreciate how beautiful her story is and how heartwarming the crews continuous acceptance of her is! its so so lovely. thank you for making this!!!

The juxtaposition of her reaching for her own hand near the start and then the crew's hands reaching out later is an obvious highlight, but what I really love is around 2:26. The way her face changes from startled to neutral could be her putting her poker face on, but to me it's like she's thinking, "It's over now. It was inevitable." It makes the joy on her face later hit all the harder.
DUDE! TRIN! THAT WAS STUNNING! THE MOVEMENT, THE TRANSITIONS, THE TIMING, THE EXPRESSIONS, STRUCTURE OF YOUR ACTUAL ART! I'm so blown away by the quality, you deserve way more recognition for this! Keep up the incredible work!💜

This really fits my friendwave ascetic. Total hope-core vibes.
Great googly moogly, this is so beautifully constructed- beat by beat, shot by shot!! Seeing little Robin dancing in the rain with glee, only for her to have to witness her own island engulfed in smoke and flame made me WEEP. But I love the way you told her story. For most of her life, the only person she could rely on, or find solace in, was ultimately, herself. I noticed that you added a scene where she’s on the ground, and one of her duplicate hands, literally, reaches out to help her climb back up. And later on, she’s able to extend that ability, which had kept her protected up until that point, to defend/look out for and care for the *straw-hats.* ( i adore the part where she puts the blanket on zoro :). ) And then we see them care for her too, making an enemy of the entire world just to see that she comes back safely. I bring this up because I love how her hands can be interpreted as protection, care, & love throughout the animatic, especially at the very end. Robin & her newfound family (straw-hats) gliding with her hand-wings (for lack of a better term) after having just freed her from a deadly government base, means so much. Beautiful, had me crying by the end. The part that had the most impact on me was the hand imagery - when the hands reaching out had been her own for the rest of the video and then they suddenly changed to the Strawhats' hands, man that color coding hit hard. :')

THIS IS SOOOOOO INSANE I love it so much!!! All the imagery is incredible, I love the change from robin helping herself out of places with her hands to the hands turning into the strawhats, and the shot of her running where she goes from a kid to 28 is SO incredible. This is just so amazing

Surprised Franky is not featured at all in this when he interacted so much with Robin in Enies Lobby but man this is so fucking beautiful and captures Robin's relationships the rest of the strawhats is such a beautiful wayyy Waaaahhh

robin isnt necessarily my favorite straw hat (that's like picking a favorite child XD) but her story is one of my favorites in the entire series. i cried so hard so many times during Enies Lobby. her story is just so sad but also grows into something so beautiful. you captured that feeling perfectly. well done. lol

What beautiful and dynamic storyboards, you captured robins emotions and motions so insanely well… Some scenes like all the strawhat children scampering up the tree or the poneglyphs circling above robin’s head are particular stand outs for me (though all of them were breathtakingly good). Ahahah I love the wings of the pirate king being his actual wings to keep him up in the end part! Ahhh this was just such a great animatic :)
