Tbh ROTC has given me better training than I thought I would get when I first enrolled after I was already enlisted. At least my program is really great in my opinion.

That's great! I had the opposite experience. I joined AFROTC after being enlisted and was so disappointed with the program that I'm dropping it and submitting an Air Force OTS package and Army OCS package.
Justin M. The thing is every college has a different style of ROTC. Some are basically boot camp and others are Like Boy Scouts.
I’m quite the opposite I’m prior enlisted and am pretty disappointed with my ROTC experience and if it weren’t for the money I’d just go to OCS lol

amazing accomplishment, hopefully you aren't going into the medical field as those scholarships aren't earned or "won", they're just given out lol. The amount of stuff they have to do is absolutely insane(I have 3 friends who plan on being nurses) to the point where they almost commission you your MS1 year. Nonetheless, congrats brotha.
Question I just submitted eveything for my scholarship application, do you have to make ur own appointment for the interview, the air force ROTC set up the interview for their scholarship so I’m kinda confused🤷🏽♂️
As a prior enlisted and now a commissioned officer, I think you are spot on in your content! I had no intention of going back in the military after my 4 year enlistment but took advantage of the GI bill. As a 22 year old freshman in college, my apartment was right across the street from ROTC and listening to them do PT in the morning drew me in. That was 22 years ago and I am still going strong. One thing to mention is that you will forge relationships with people for life! I know that my brothers and sisters that I was in school with or stationed with will go through hell and high water for each other, it is truly the largest fraternity on earth!
I was awarded the NROTC Marine Option National Scholarship this year and your other ROTC/ Military videos really did help me though the process. Just wanted you to know how helpful and important you putting out videos like this one is. Thank you very much!

I was in ROTC (non commission) for a year. My schools program was terrible so I decided not to continue on with it. We didn't do half the stuff you got to do. Lot of the cadets were really pretentious and awful but it was still fun haha. Glad to hear other people had better experiences with it. I think it's a good idea and do a lot for you if you find a school with a good program.
I currently have an appointment to the West Point class of 2022 and I wanted to thank you for the information that you have provided in your military videos. I intend to commission as an infantry officer upon graduation and really enjoy your videos about what it is like to actually be an infantry officer as nobody else has really covered this topic on CZcams.

how has ROTC been so far?
I was in Air Force ROTC a couple semesters back. I really wanted to be there, I really wanted it to be for me but it didnt take me long to realize that I wasn't cut out for it. I was very weak candidate. I excelled at PT but I lacked in everything else. I wasn't a very good student and thats the most important thing when being a cadet. Grades come first then everything else. On top of that I have tattoos on my hand on my neck so they dropped me the second semester. That semester and a half of being an ROTC cadet was awesome though. I learned a lot and had some awesome experiences and I'll never forget it. I havent abondoned my dream of joining the AF. I guess Im not meant to be an officer and thats ok. I'll gladly try my hand at going enlisted. Who knows, maybe its just ROTC that wasnt right for me at the time. I might end up going to OTS and becoming a LT afterall. We'll see.

I am ex Australian Military with 1 tour of Afghanistan. I learnt so much from my time in the Military and owe the services so much for then direction and discipline I received. Now I'm a serving Police Officer and regularly recommend the Military to some of the kids I deal with who are lacking direction. I think conscription should be mandatory if you don't have a job or at uni with 12 months of leaving school.
Keep selling the military. It's a great career.
conscription would never work in the US (it's because its solely based on volunteer and every American is enthusiastic when joining, another reason why we are the world's best wa rfighting force) but i would love to have every liberal to be conscripted and have a taste of suck. Talking about the military is perfect for those who have no sense of direction in life.

Hoo-Ahh Nick! God bless you, sir! I've been following you for a little bit, and you definitely feel like a brother to me sir, for multiple reasons. We're close to the same age, and I finally decided to get my life in order and commit to ROTC in the last year. I'm going to Basic Camp this summer, and I look forward to finishing my undergrad at GSU and commissioning as an officer! I still don't know which of the branches I'm going to shoot for, but I think you're right on when you say the Army is helpful for people that don't know exactly what they want to do, and that's definitely true for me. I got this scholarship for my college next year! They even upgraded me from a 3 year scholarship to a 4 year scholarship! I never thought I'd be able to pay for college with how expensive it is, but I'm so excited for ROTC! Your channel was one of the first I found when exploring the military and ROTC, and I'm really glad that I stumbled onto it because it helped me make the choice to go for it. This is a great video. I'm a prior 11b that got out over some medical issues during the draw down in 2013. Rotc is my way back in with more opportunities for waivers for that now that I got it fixed. I plan to stay in and make it a career and I plan to adso for infantry since I'm not exactly a great student. But these are the kinds of videos needed

I'll just say as enlisted, a solo person saying this, and a different branch. I swear up and down the Army has better leaders and not Bosses unlike the Air Force. I think this is why I have such a distaste and angst against any form of someone over me in the military and why I am getting out on a honorable discharge. I'm glad it worked out for you, it certainly didn't for me. I'm part of that crowd that disagrees with the experience. Freedom is far more important to me than micromanagment.
Keenan Smith I guess they expect more out of AF officers. I haven’t really encountered any shitty officers myself but many many terrible ncos and senior ncos. I do believe the army is more a brotherhood and people are not trying to shit on each other for rank.

do you know if you already got into college that you can apply for ROTC
Graduated and commissioned in May 1990. I commissioned with eleven or twelve others. None of us went active duty. This was six months or so, after the fall of the Berlin Wall. I believe our stipend was $100-150 per month. We had one person on scholarship out of my commissioning class but we had fun!!!
Easiest and most understandable breakdown of how ROTC works. If you get the 4-year scholarship, you get your first year to try it out with no cost if you quit. Advanced Camp is a lot more tactics now and lot for field time. ROTC is a pretty well paying gig if you sign the right contract. GRFD for life 😂

I'm not doing ROTC but I just signed my National Guard contract a few months ago. Haven't been to basic yet but RSP has been awesome so far and I'm gonna be using that GI bill to help get through a smaller in state college

If you are a nursing major, I'm pretty sure that is all you will be able to do in the Army no matter what your rank may be. Nurses are not at a competitive base compared to everyone else.

I'd like to add that officers get treated far better than an enlisted will ever get. Especially in a MOS like his. Fair warning to let you know it will either be a 4-6 year experience of great pleasure or extreme displeasure dishing whatever your leadership randomly thinks of and you have to pretty much do it as something that is infracted on your life. Again a big decision.

GMS NAQAM too bad. You go wherever the government wants you to be. Your life is basically on hold for however long you decided to sign up for. No guarantees on jobs, no guarantees on locations, and definitely no guarantees on the kind of leadership you will have. If I had to start all over again, and if I actually wanted to be in the military because I was not in a situation to choose at the time of no employment, I absolutely would have chosen to try to get that scholarship for ROTC in high school, started working out hard 3-5 years prior to signing up, and gone Army medical officer or the same thing for the Air Force. It's a huge decision man. In grand scheme of things the this is a very short blip but meaningful blip in the existence of your life because once the contract is over you are done. It feels like forever but you don't have to do it again.

Hey Nick, I just got awarded an Air Force ROTC scholarship and I’m waiting to hear back from the Air Force Academy. Do you think ROTC is better than the service academies?
Recently enlisted into the guard, once i get to college this was my plan. My only issue is that I want to go active duty once through. But that than means if I get the rotc scholarship than I would lose my guard benefits in the process.
the ROTC scholarship will be much more than guard benefits
Look into the simultaneous membership program
superbowl5212 my guard benefits include 100% payed tuition for state funded schools in illinois, gi bill with kicker and my monthly drill pay.
While in the guard, you can apply for a Minute Man scholarship, only available to your state’s enlisted Soldiers. Easier to get and you get all of the benefits as you would a 4 year scholarship. If, after commissioning you still really want to go into the Active Component, there is a program that you may be able to take advantage of called Call To Active Duty. bottom line is stick to your plan, you can make it work Good luck!

Does anyone know how recruiters feel when you tell them you want to go infantry? Do they try and steer you away for whatever reason?
Most will say that's fine put that as option 1 and then will let you know of any regiments that are in higher demand and if you have considered it. In the end its your decision nobody elses so. Your giving away a chunk of your life so stick to what you want to do. I feel infantry isn't as popular as people make out, a lot of people especially now go for regiments or roles where they will get a trade, i.e. being a sapper/engineering.
TB 2018 ok... was watching some videos when you replied to this... and if they say something like “that MOS isn’t open right now” or something that another person has taken it already... I’ll just tell them that I’ll wait for it to get open...
Yeah I can only speak from a British point of view. But typically there is jobs which arn't open over here for example 1st Military Working Dog Regiment which has a 18 month waiting period currently. But if you want to do that job and only that job then you'll wait. Infantry regiments and cavalry tend to be always be recruiting, especially Guards regiments as nobody fancies standing outside Buckingham Palace. Think difference with British over US is in the British army you join the regiment and then you get a specialisation where as the US seems to be picking a job role or MOS and then going into whatever Unit is open for that role.
How competitive its earn the active duty in ROTC... my dream its be an infantry officer or aviation officer but I heard than earn active duty it's hard... if someone clarify me I will be so grateful... Nick i love you're videos man...
Do you have to have a great PT score going into ROTC? Like will they turn you away, if your PT score isn't high?
AllThingsUSMilitary If you get a schlorship you will need to be able to pass the APFT at the minimum. If you are in noncontract/nonschlorship then you do not need to pass the APFT but you really should try and pass.
Austin lol Thanks. Yeah I agree. I wasn’t looking for the minimum but as of now I am most definitely not a “competitive candidate” but I’m not lazy. I’m still progressing. I just wanted to know if I should send in my application with the score I have or just wait till it’s a more competitive score?
As far as my school goes you don't have to send any scores in. You don't go before the board to get contracted until your MS2/3 year(and you have to maintain a 3.0+ gpa with a pt score that is 250+).
Of course there are exceptions, like if you're going to be in the medical school. You're almost definitely going to be contracted year one, unless your pt score is terribly low.
I guess go ahead and send in the scores you currently have and look to improve(obviously do-able like you said you're capable of doing so) as each pt test comes. Unless you're unwilling to learn and better yourself, you'll be accepting into the program as it is a "taste" of the military type of deal. The ones who continue to their MS3(or even MS2) year are the ones really looking to commission

Their job is to lead infantrymen in combat but of course, they do see combat.
