  • The Apple Watch Ultra is the juggernaut of Apple watches. I've been using it against some of the best wearables like the Garmin Epix 2. But is this watch really worth picking up?
    Thanks for watching!

    Look at the reviews. When they compare the accuracy of sensors in Garmin and Apple. The difference in accuracy is 99% for Apple and 65% for Garmin. Those are terrible numbers. Why would I want a watch that lasts a long time, but makes zero sense?

    I use garmin, because of the complete sport and healt combination. Espacially new features like HRV measurement each night is just a must have. But the apple watch is just starting into sports in my opinien, and maybe one day will just outperform everything.

    I'm weird, I use Bothe the Fēnix 7 sapphire solar and the watch ultra. Basically if there's a possibility that I'm going to be off grid for more that 2 days I take both the ultra is my daily and workout companion, while if I'm in the woods for like I said moe than 2 days u use the garrmin.

    I upgraded to the Apple Watch 7 in Jan 2022 , love it for daily use and workouts. For “rugged” , I wear a Casio Pathfinder w the compass/barometer. That thing has stood some test. Diving, snow, military training, and the best thing; it’s solar powered. That’s something no smart watch is yet to do . Even with a few days battery, it’ll eventually need a charge. 🤔

    Good review! Spot on. I am that “deep wilderness adventurer” on occasion, and very nearly bought the Epix 2 for that reason but ended up with the Ultra for my day to day and local excursions watch. I already have GPS devices etc. when I go on my trips and I really love the smart watch integration etc. Your review hit exactly right.

    • @hollywood4n6
      @hollywood4n6 Před rokem

      One note, while many of his insights to the Apple Watch are “spot on”, the Garmin EPIX 2 has a much better battery life even with all the features turned on, I get roughly 16-18 days on a single charge and that’s using everything needed. Apple barely lasts 48 hours and that’s with everything turned off and barely using it after I got to 10%. I wouldn’t suggest wearing Apple on deep excursions for the simple fact you have to constantly keep it charged and if you look at other channels that compare Samsung, Apple Watch 6,7 and Ultra, even the Fenix 7 to the EPIX 2, the GPS on the others can and do get you lost since they can be meters away from your location up to hundreds of yards, EPIX, esp companioned with your iPhone or Android, is dead on if not a meter or two off. As an off-roader who goes off grid and into the wilderness for days or a week sometimes more, I carry the InTouch 2 and an on-board GPS, but I much rather have the ability to check in or send my coordinates in an emergency… AND BE FOUND… rather than carry flares and lights in my backpack when emergencies can and do arise esp when myself or my party is unconscious.

    • @longbowsafari9974
      @longbowsafari9974 Před rokem

      @@hollywood4n6 I actaully did my last wilderness adventure (dropped off by horseback with "Good luck, see you in 8 days!") wearing my Casio, "Mudmaster." I had an ultralight light/charger but no cell phone signal anyway, which I knew. The light is great.I carried a PLB and would rely on that in an emergency. Remember, people have gone deep wilderness for centuries before there were watches, so if I lost or broke my watch I would feel little alarm in a survival situation. As I said, I do love the Epic for all the reasons you enumerate (although I have found the Ultra GPS and backtrack just fine so far). I will probably pick up the Epic III at some point. I love the Ultra, the cellular, the integration such as the software that automatically unlocks by computer or phone so it's perfect for when I am hunting and wearing a face mask. No need to pull that off or a glove even just to check something on my phone. Heck, for local hunting and hiking, there is no need to even bring my phone-I love that!

    I don’t even use my Apple Watch Ultra for workouts anymore, it keeps locking on me because it thinks it’s off of my wrist since I have tattoos on my wrist, therefore it blocks, the optical reader. It is completely annoying and the only way to stop it is to take off the Apple Pay, but then it still won’t read my heart rate. My Garmin Fenix 7x sapphire solar’ heart rate only works if I push it below the knob on my wrist, but the Garmin pay always works and the watch never locks on me. Also, the Apple Watch doesn’t count reps in the gym and that’s ridiculous! I where my Garmin to support me on Workouts and the Apple ultra for day to day. When I’m not working out, I strap the Garmin to my ankle so I can still get the metrics. Not to mention the battery life is so much better on the Garmin I’m an amateur athlete, but my workouts can last up to 6 hours with a long run, boxing, biking and weights. I also compete in ultramarathons, and I will never trust my Garmin for that.

    This seems one sided. Garmin does have a diving app on their “App Store” and there is a dedicated button for quick selection. The GPS is highly intuitive in Garmin as well as way point features as well as much much more. As an Apple user, you can’t use the Watch on Android yet Garmin can be used for either. Garmin is not just the “ultimate sports watch” but it’s an immense smart watch. The price point is significantly higher on the Garmin at $1000 and it’s standard with the Sapphire glass, whereas the Apple comes in at $800 and you still have to purchase its own cellular plan. They both feature emergency accessibility however, Garmin does allow for communication to first responders whereas Apple has its functionality but nowhere close to Garnins… to push this further, you require cell service to use the emergency response but Garmin allows it to be used completely free from civilization. Maybe do more research and stop comparing Apple Watch to previous generations… literally “Apples to oranges”. Garmin has an immense dedicated app support from Garmin as well as third parties and unlike Apple, you can pair it with Tread, HRMs, BP cuffs, even in-vehicle peripherals including GPS dash monitors, remote accessory modules and much much more. The “Garmin Universe” is expansive and has been around for a long time, Apple has just entered the game when it comes to smart watches and perfecting the application. As I said, I’ve used Apple since 2007 with the original 3G and have owned an iPhone ever since, I’ve used Apple Watches (3 generations), as well as G-Shock Master of G, Solar Editions, GPS, Aviators and Tactical, I own the Fenix 6, 7X and EPIX 2… EPIX is my daily and while there was a week learning curve, I have yet to put another watch on, including my Ultra which I returned a month after purchasing, I have not looked back since. The Garmin is hands down, the best and most versatile of all sport and smart watches on the market.

      Hi Steven, I've used my Garmin fenix 6x pro for years and it's so terrible. The charge port has issues now, it always drops out and the functions are just not good.
      So I have chosen the Ultra (nervously), to replace it as I've almost never warn any sport watch other than a Garmin. And funnily enough no garmin has worked well for me and I've treated my gadgets well. The fenix would last no more than a day. Ultra also covers swim kicks if you use a kick board. It detects it. Apps cover anything Ultra doesn't have that the garmin does. Best wishes.

    I have a Garmin Venu 2S, and the reason I chose this 1 year ago because of the battery life. When the Ultra came out, with much more improved battery and my non-extreme and day to day activities (strength training, swimming, badminton, day hikes), the ultra provides much better user experience with the whole Apple ecosystem, which cannot be beat by any Garmin/other smart watches. The screen, display quality, and the watchOS interface are just so much more supreme, and not to mention I hate the Garmin ConnectIQ app (it's so limited and many watch faces do cost a fee).
