      It was the Stockton Arsonists and they actually caught the culprits pretty easily. People identified the house and led the police to them. A 17-year old and a 19-year old, the older guy convinced the younger guy to do this with him because he was mentally unstable. The house was abandoned and no one was hurt. I love the atmosphere in this, but I wish the developer took some time to learn how to craft a narrative out of all of it. It seems like a huge opportunity just wasted on "ooo spooky devil circle" and then "Now we're in a house and there's a jumpscare at the end!"

      It depends what you're looking for. I vastly prefer a realistic serial killer ending (obviously inspired by Henry Portrait of a serial killer) than a 'spooky wookie supernatural cult' ending which was sort of a red herring.
      'I wish the developer took some time to learn how to craft a narrative out of all of it.' I mean I understood the narrative pretty fine watching the no commentary version. It's obviously a basic story but it works perfectly fine for something that's more of a mood piece than a game. Why are so many vinny fans are so confident their opinion on something is 100% objective fact and the game developer is bad? Plenty of people enjoy puppet combo's more realistic style of slasher horror.

    • @Harpotos
      @Harpotos Před 4 lety +30

      What do you mean? There is a narrative:
      You play as a deranged killer, who documents one of his murders.
      First off we see the abandoned house you are squatting in, where you are worshipping the devil.
      Then you go to the house you've scoped out to kill someone. The ending isn't a jumpscare, it's one of the parts of the tape which has been redacted by the police, where you jump your victim.
      You then burn the house down and leave her clothes and the tape in a garbage bag. You are establishing the killers modus operandi.
      It's simple, but I started out thinking it would be a standard "kid tries to explore spooky place and finds ghosts and demons!", but as the last part came up, it clicked. I found it pretty unnerving and effective.

    • @TehSkullKid
      @TehSkullKid Před 4 lety +2

      @@Harpotos I mean that there is no attempt from the developer at creating a narrative story, and that the game could be better if they utilized the imagery and pacing they've created to tell one. Nothing in the game shows or tells the player the narrative you offer. That's a bunch of stuff you just invented right now. What element clues you in that you're a killer or that there was indeed a killing or fire? We never see a body. We never see someone pouring gasoline. I guess you could say the fire at the ending was the house being set on fire (like Vinny suggested), or that the scream in the jumpscare was a victim, but those are big stretches. It's just a guy exploring around some spooky imagery.

I think the atmosphere was there, but there just wasn't anything to really do in the game. I'm glad to see Puppet Combo improving and I encourage them to keep going. If they could combine some gameplay elements into this visual style then I think they could really be onto something.

  • @KajDarkwind
    @KajDarkwind Před 4 lety +3

    I really liked the feel and aesthetic of this game, could definitely use a plot but it would require a certain level of vagueness/subtlety to properly suit the atmosphere. That being said, the beginning of this game freaked me out a bit... The entire beginning where you're climbing stairs in a tower-like structure, is nearly identical to a recurring nightmare that I used to have when I was a kid. Not just the structure, or the fact that each floor looks the same to the point that it seems like you're looping; the actual details of the room(s) were uncomfortably similar to the tower from my dream. The biggest difference actually is that I was always being chased by something in the dream. That aside, I found the game to be legitimately creepy, and that's not something I can say about too many horror games. It has a very dream-like quality to it and there were times where I could swear it was actual found footage and not a game. One of the few horror games I'm tempted to play myself.

    i love the look of puppet combo's games but honestly i wish he had more than just 2 gameplay styles. it's always:
    -you are trapped in some spooky place and have to run and/or hide from some sort of evil entity(either a monster or some sort of murderer)
    -you are the entity
    (gotta admin i still like "feed me billy")
    my guess as to why he only has 2 styles is because it's easier to simply reuse the last game's pathfinding and VHS-Filter instead of making something new and more unique. that's probably why they are all so similar gameplay wise.

  • @Xindictive
    @Xindictive Před 4 lety +4

    Puppet Combo is a developer that care way too much about graphics/style over substance/gameplay. They can do the VHS/retro game style really well, but at the end of the day, a majority of their games are lackluster tech demos at best and walking sims/basic games at worst, and instead of working with something and improving it, they throw in essentially a small game for a quick little scare and such that'll easily gather in people like Vinesauce for things like October, or anyone into the horror genre with any note to them, which gets them more notice and following, before working on the next small game with essentially the same engine and style, but a bit more tuned.
    I was cool with it beforehand, during the early releases from them, but lately with some of their games, i am honestly going to say, without any bullshit in my mind, that you can take this and 2 other games they released recently and they all just kinda mesh together because the style is given more of a focus over the gameplay and they all act and feel the exact same every time, with very similar lengths too, which makes every future release more and more disappointing because they just... refuse to make a game with this style and actually WORK with it, making it more of a fully fledged game with alot to offer rather than a small experience with small sections here and there.
    I understand their audience and why they like this, but if it keeps up this way, then the well will dry up quick and graphic style won't always keep you afloat for long if you have nothing to really showcase with it other than rather lackluster games in concept and content. And before you say it, because i noticed a few in the comments with this, yes, genres like Slashers and certain series like Friday 13th and Halloween are very similar too, usually most of them getting worse as it goes on, but what makes some of those movies work is with the characters, writing and (i have no regrets using this film term here) mise en scene to give every scene weight and substance to it. To give an example of a movie, if it was done by Puppet Combo with how they have released games lately, instead of Alien having half of it about the team and the slow build up and exploration of the creature and the crew slowly getting killed off one by one in frightening ways, the entire movie is just the 2nd half with Ripley slowly going around the entire ship, leading to her escape with the explosion and such, most of the crew already dead and the alien already fully formed from the get go the entire time, but with the addition of a grindhouse filter.

      After watching Yahtzee's game dev diaries, the thing that he determined makes a game interesting is called the "primary game loop". It's what the player is doing from minute to minute in the game. For example, in a platformer like Super Mario Brothers the primary loop is running and jumping onto platforms. If the primary game loop is fun or addictive, then that is the first step. Then there is the "secondary game loop" which is achieved by doing the primary game loop successfully a certain number of times. For Mario that would be reaching the goal/completing the stage. Then the "tertiary game loop" is basically the premise of the game or the ultimate goal. For Mario that would be rescue Princess Toadstool/defeat King Koopa.

    Not alone, no. Two or three people definitely. Not just because of safety, but doing it alone may be a bit more scary, but less interesting. The conversation during I feel would make the moment memorable since we would be talking about our spooky perspectives while going alone is pretty much the equivalent of telling someone else your dream last night.

I know the burning house is inspired by that one video of an arsonist whispering while staring at, well, a house that he caught on fire, which is kind of neat and spooky. But this is the most bland, boring, non frightening horror game on the planet. And if it weren't for Vinny telling the odd story here and there, it would be the most unbearable video/stream ever

      You can find it boring while others will be unnerved at not knowing what will happen. Not knowing what the threat is makes the experience. Not good game-wise but an experience is more than likely not gonna be commonly accepted as good or bad, just maybe interesting.

      You'll be pleased to hear that the 'Ruth Price 911 Call' isn't confirmed to be legit. I've seen a theory that it was part of a training exercise for new emergency call handlers. There's very little to no evidence anywhere that reports the murder of a "Ruth Price" had even occurred, so we can't be sure it's real. I'm more inclined to believe that it is a fake 911 call.

    • @DougsDiggers
      @DougsDiggers Před 4 lety

      I sure hope so. The scream sounds legit though. I've heard plenty of these the way she screams is spot on for someone in legit fear for their life. Someone completely defenseless that knows they're about to die. Shit made me have an anxiety attack. had to stop watching the stream.

    • @blobbem
      @blobbem Před 4 lety

      @@DougsDiggers It sounding legit fortunately does not make it so. I've seen quite a few fake viral videos that look rather convincing, for example. The fact that there's absolutely nothing - no news reports, no police reports - about the murder of an 80-year-old woman called Ruth Price whilst she was on the phone to 911 in her own home during the 1980's leads me to believe it didn't happen. Nobody has yet to confirm that it is real with reliable proof.
