Not only that either, but the real Colonel was an Italian with jet black hair. So the nickname was even more attuned to the stereotype. An Italian Marine Colonel with jet black hair leading men who are part of a sworn brotherhood... The name "Godfather" is almost TOO on-the-nose. 😉😉

He retracted the landing gear after lifting off temporarily and then fell right back down on the tarmac and came to a screeching halt. Chance Kelly is the only actor to have nailed every point home of a real competent, US Military CO. It is really something when an actor fits a role so well, and God damn the real Godfather must be elated how he got portrayed in this show

I was an 0351 in 1/6 wpns co 2006-10... and was in a CAAT plt that went on the longest convoy in OEF...I was in vic 1 btw boot as hell and scared to death. 24th meu to 🇦🇫 in 08. PH from a GSW to the head on mothers day... I say that so you know its coming from a credible source (imho). This show was phenomenal and you were terrific in it. Your portrayal of a high ranking officer that inspires confidence in his leadership was phenomenal. Though no one will quite do what my plt cmdr did as far as gaining our trust and love, its nice to see a solid portrayal of what he would've become had he made it a career. 1st Lt Tom Lefevre... I'd follow him into hell after Hitler with nothing but a whiffle ball bat. Ok ill stop my rambling now. But thank you from a marine grunt for doing it right and thank you from a movie and tv lover for a timeless mini series.

One of the strongest characters in the whole series. The portrayal of this character brings the gravity of war and the other characters’ situations home every time. Inspiring performance
@Ryan Ong I served under Col Ferrando back in 2007-2008, and it is hard to explain but there are two things for leaders of Marines - 1. Mission accomplishment and 2. Welfare of the Marines under your charge. In combat, No 1 is top priority knowing that Marines may die while accomplishing No 1 is not really considered welfare of the Marines. Hard line to follow...Col Ferrando was very good at No 1... and you wanted to be good at No 1 while under his command... that could come across as hardass for sure.
@@gyleake Can you imagine any of those officers doing something like pocketing the ammunition they saved NOT training the regiment, then selling it on the black market? Failed drive to Kiev is one result of such corruption. A failed drive to Baghdad then being repelled would have been stunning.
Chance Kelly perfectly recapture the actual Godfather’s Voice. If you ever find actual footage of Godfather and actually hear him talk. Jelly just flat out nailed it.

What I love about Col. Fernando’s portrayal here is that, while seemingly a good man for the most part, as a CO he makes decisions that both fuck things up (leaving behind the supply trucks with munitions and the battalion colors) and help further their objective (taking the airfield for example). He’s a realistic leader, no one is gonna make the right decisions 100% of the time every time. Especially when in charge of a unit like First Recon under those conditions. He’s not a good or bad guy necessarily. He’s just, there to do his job.
For me, he sets targets that encourage others to make stupid and dangerous decisions (leaving the ammo truck behind, intact and unguarded) and rolls the dice on a bet with a disastrous downside (a coy wiped out by heavier forces) and a limited upside (glory, attention, beating the Brits). But a great character anyway!
I've been on a binge of re-watching Generation Kill for the 3rd time and just echoing what everyone has said a billion times but Chance Kelly's portrayal of the Godfather is absolute bliss. After watching clips of the real Godfather it's jaw dropping amazing how much he captured his mannerisms and voice. Bravo Chance!

What a fantastic job he did with this difficult character! At the risk of inviting an argument though, I'm surprised to find so many viewers laud the character he is playing as an exemplar of military mentality. In one respect, yes he is. But I felt like the writers were using this particular character to parody not how *well* the war was fought, but how the soldiers on the ground had very little idea of why they were doing anything. Obviously the real individual Godfather is based on might have done a standup job, but insofar as GK's writing and portrayal is concerned, I didn't feel like we were supposed to root for him. For example. The speech about the wounded Iraqi civilian and possibility of casevac - he says "It's a shitty situation, but nobody put a gun to our heads and forced us to come here." But in the context of the episode, his decisions are the reason they are so exposed, it isn't some happenstance that dropped them there. Furthermore, it isn't even as though they were ordered that far forward - it was Godfather's own initiative, something he is eager to have recognised, that put them so far out of their line of supply. He even falls back on the technicalities of the RoE to explain why they needn't feel bad about the situation - missing the point completely, from the looks on the men's faces, that they didn't want to be exonerated. They wanted to take responsibility for their, and their corps', actions. When he is explaining about the colours, that he ordered to be left behind to chase a bunk objective, he downplays his own role in it and chooses to promise more action, again seemingly oblivious of the fact that all of the men were acutely aware of how tactically exposed they were in pursuing it. The issue isn't that they lost the colours, its that they lost the colours because of a spur-of-the-moment decision that a truck full of supplies while working behind enemy lines isn't as important as beating some allies to their own objective. The posturing about displeasing General Matthis reads sardonically, after Godfather approaches him on the MSR as he's berating a subordinate - and even though his contribution to the situation is laughably minor ("That'll be my Alpha company taking out their spotters - I expect these mortars to stop shortly") the dialogue is conducted so as to make him seem more like he's taking the opportunity of a colleague looking shit, to make himself look good, than the man of the hour delivering some good news to his unhappy boss. Later, when Rolling Stone is interviewing him, he takes the opportunity to pontificate through what questions might have been asked. He summarises; "I didn't realise how much I would miss it," as the reporter looks on bemused "Getting shot at." This statement explains, more than anything else he says in the series, the haphazard, reckless, and seemingly aimless manoeuvre warfare we've been watching for seven episodes. Instead of the good causes the men signed up to fight, their actions were directed by the individual ego and hubris of their commander for little more than the attentions of a superior, or to one-up an ally or colleague. A complex character, mysterious because he's the one with the answers, the master plan. But to me the moral of the show was that there was no plan - that in fact, even in as strange and perilous circumstances as combat, office politics is still a thing and important people make decisions for petty reasons. I just found it odd that so many people celebrate and root for this character, but he reads very differently to me. Maybe I read him wrong all this time?
I agree somewhat. He seems to be a polarizing character, people either loving him or hating him. I think in terms of story, his character helps give the audience the bigger picture of what's happening, and helps explain the dilemmas they faced, like the casevac situation or how they had to turn away Iraqi civilians because the battalion was being targeted by artillery. He does act/says things that are insensitive/oblivious to the mood of those around him, but I feel like he's a fairly neutral character. In terms of incompetence I think the company commander fills that story role. And of course the PL is supposed to be the one you like. One thing I want to point out that a lot of people seem to miss, (or maybe I didn't watch it right), is that they didn't rush to the air field just to show off. They had airborne units that were going to assault it UNLESS the enemy had armor. Recon needed to have eyes on to confirm or not. They were rushing to the objective so they could call them off if they did. I don't think this was part of the story but I'd wager they never planned to become decisively engaged.
@@Wasthere73 After they take the airfield, Sergeant Colbert points to the empty tanks and notes that if the tanks had been actively manned, they would all be dead.
I'd also note that in one scene his greatest fear is making move that General Matthias will disapprove of. Not anything about losing his men's lives or something of that sort. But rather simply the displeasure of his superior officer. Shows him to be a careerist, concerned about his future in the Marines rather the immediate problem of keeping him men alive while fulfilling his objectives.
This is exactly where confusion comes in. Every example given was good but there was always more that we could not see as we were not privy to that information. He had a higher up too as he stated many times. There will never be a perfect situation for anything and so a perfect solution cannot exist. He also cannot downplay his own decisions outright. So even if he admits a mistake it cannot be as if it was just pure incompetence as it wasn't he has to act on the knowledge of many changing factors. At first I liked his character, then I didn't, then I realized im not supposed to like him. He's literally trying to juggle many things that he himself does not have complete control or power over. One thing that I noticed was how absolutely crucial keeping morale up was. Everytime he speaks its like another war cry another understanding that success is around the bend. It felt like that was the leaders true jobs to not allow their men to feel a sense of hopelessness in what they were doing but to try to get them to understand that everything they did was a part of a bigger plan. Also, i hated his rationale for somewhat allowing his leaders incompetence but at the same time I completely understood why he couldn't just start uprooting ranks based on complaints. Its bad but it had to happen only after some crazy bad things happen to not have a shadow of a doubt which is regrettable for the victims. He did his best and he had to always give a positive result to the higher ups or things would be messy for him and the men as ppl on the ground often times dont understand what is needed to accomplish the mission. So i respect him now. He did his job.
Nope, you read him spot on. His leadership isn't something to be admired. He was reckless and lucky. He's portrayed as an idiot. In fact, intelligent are berated and the ignorant lauded in this command. It's laughable. In fact my wife and I laughed throughout the series due to its accuracy and how ridiculous it all is. This series was recommended to me by a grunt Marine who invaded Iraq, recognized the ridiculousness, recognized the accuracy, and figured I'd enjoy it, having been a Marine invading Iraq at the same time, albeit in a different capacity (air wing). In hindsight, what we knew at the time, that these people are ridiculous, was proven correct, making this series all the more hilarious...and sad. But this is the reality of much of the Marine Corps, sadly. Whether you shave daily in combat it more important than a great many actually important factors.
I just started watching the series, late I know. This man not only nailed his performance with incredible nuance and sophistication, he produced the aura of a leader and the essence of a Marine. I would watch anything this gentleman did, independent of genre just to support his career.

I caught bits of this on tv when I was around 18, the Godfather performance always stuck with me. Finally got to watch the whole thing a few weeks ago. Honestly one of the best depictions of war I’ve seen. Everything was on point. Think I’m going to grab the book soon.

The show took an interesting interpretation of the officers in First Recon during this invasion. Evan Wright's accounting of Lt Col Ferrando was as a staff officer dropped into First Recon who brought his rear echelon b.s. into a unit that was used to more freedom in their operations. I think he used the phrase "Parade Officer" to describe Godfather. First Recon didn't really think much of any of the officers, particularly Godfather; according to Wright, most of the officers who came along for the invasion normally operated at home or some other base, rarely in country with the platoons. The show plays many of the officers and senior enlisted to be buffoons, but they take it easy by comparison on Godfather's depiction. He supposedly was pretty far out of his element, but Godfather got his Marines to achieve their objectives, so how bad could he be? Maybe David Simon wanted to save some face and concentrate the incompetence with Encino Man, Casey Kasem, and Captain America and leave Godfather to be truly a father figure to this cobbled bunch of Marines. Also, many of the lines Chance Kelly says are direct quotes from Evan Wright's reporting.

Excellent point. I forget that probably many more just saw the series. Having read the book previous to the series coming out that understanding of how the enlisted soldiers viewed the officers and brought that into viewing the series. The series does a good job of showing the incompetence in certain officers while not making it as much of the theme as it was in the book. Great breakdown. I must say Chance Kelly's portrayal and use of direct quotes that are actual is masterful.
I remember my edition had an afterword from Wright, written a few years later. His judgments seemed to have softened a bit since the time of the book. But maybe that was due to getting older and nostalgic.
4:15- 7:10 godfather talks for 3 minutes explaining why he couldn't evac the child. the soilders/ officers gave 0 fucks about what he was saying all they saw was a hurt child, they said nothing just kept looking at him until he called in evac. they basically told godfather he had to evac the kid. great scene.
It's a really good scene. Shows the balancing of evils Godfather had to do all the time, and his men telling him he's wrong without a single word of contention. A debate without word and without compromising the respect of the chain of command.
Disagree with the assessment. Lt. Col. Ferrando intended to evac the child from the very beginning. He went through the explanation in order to impress on his Officers and NCO's the resources necessary to do so, and how it would affect the battalion's fighting readiness. If he never intended to evac the child, he would have given his orders without explanation.
You got it wrong. His statement in regards to limited options they have to evac a wounded child was impressive. Because of their current situation, they have to asses and think carefully due to many unknowns and with them being so very few.
I've probably watched this show half a dozen times, and I'm just now realizing the absurdity of his speech about losing the supply truck. Godfather wasn't upset that they lost food, ammo, and other supplies that were vital to their effort, but he was upset about losing the battalion colors. Understandable that losing your colors would have a negative impact on morale, but everything else to Godfather seemed to be an after thought. To the guys like Colbert, Espera and Doc Brian, losing the supplies themselves was critically damaging to them, as they pretty much need them to survive since they're all so far behind the enemy lines. But to Godfather that doesn't matter. All that mattered to him was the loss of the colors. In the show it doesn't seem like he is able to see how his actions are going to affect his men, and since he's so focused on the big picture and the plans of General Mattis, he completely loses focus and control over everything below him in the chain of command.
It bugs me how he says "Ferrando takes full responsibility for it" and not "I take full responsibility for it". He's "taking responsibility" while distancing himself from it by referring to himself in the 3rd person. Seems like an inability to fully own up to a mistake.
In the Marine Corps, losing your unit colors is unacceptable in any situation. This is drilled into every Marine virtually from day one of boot camp. The Corps is steeped in tradition.

This guy is good actor. Bradley Cooper did extensive research and spent time with US Navy SEAL Chris Kyle prior to filming American Sniper. Some people, such as Chris Kyle's Widow, and Director Clint Eastwood said it is scary how good Brad Cooper portrayed Chris Kyle. Some actors take their role seriously to make it as close to the real thing as they can.
The real Chris Kyle was a piece of shit and comes across as a narcisstic sociopath in his own book ranting and raving about Iraqi savages and endless bragging. Bradley Cooper made him more sympathetic.
I loved this series. If you conjured an image of an US Marine, he would probably look a lot like Chance Kelly with that strong chin and powerful neck. He is no stereo type in this, but a thoughtful leader who coldly explains the inherent logic of military engagement without equivocation or sentiment: "No one asked you to come here...we are all volunteers".
Sorry to say, I thought the show was up and down. But this guy was special. If you're a fan of actors, this guy makes you sit up and take notice. Raw, but a natural.
The crazy thing is this unit and others did a lot. Think about all those scenes the men seem like they hit every time. I don't it was every shot obviously, but these dudes were all the top of marksmanship experts. These are elite troops. One time in the series you know it's pretty realistic. You can tell the way they're cool under fire is intentional and not thematic. Most of them were just angry of annoyed. And that is what a unit as trained and ready for combat as this one does. CO Col. Ferrando was doing his job well and it isn't about battle streamers and you can tell. This was this man's life work. It is a very, very serious job and the men in this video do not react in fear to combat. They made mistakes but generally the end result was them making the right call. That's why I think Godfather is the most interesting character of all and I agree that he made good decisions. He was doing a job he knew required total confidence and conviction. He didn't see Captain America do that, but he also saw Lt Fick was one of the best. I do think he recognized that the trust of your men was everything. It it what kind of elite unit are you. Your job is to be elite and some lost their cool, and some weren't elite. The airfield scenes are a best at interpreting Godfather showing what some watching the show didn't catch. Godfather may have proven incorrect or just that their mission of disruption of organized conflict was achieved. That's part of why this show feels kinda Mad Max. These days soldiers tend to have a lot more information. But remember they were men who followed their mission and did what they were ordered. That was their job. It's up to you to make an opinion
I think godfather handled that situation with the shot kid really well. He was 100%right. His priority had to be the mission and the men. He explained the precarious situation really well and made the men understand how dangerous it was what they were asking for. In the end he did the descent thing but his men aren't likely to question his orders again
@@GigaChadh976 it was really Mattis decision as Mattis heavily implied that he wanted Marines to secure that airfield and not the British Paratroopers He gave Ferrando an opportunity to strike a hard target and secure it, Ferrando realized this wasn't a suggestion and knew Mattis wanted him to take it

Being a Battalion commander directly under the Eye of the CG doesn't leave you with a lot of room to defy the CG and CENTCOM They even showed in the show that hesitant officers wouldn't be tolerated as it completely jeopardizes the American way of war which is Manuever Warfare, even the slightest bit of hesitation can lead to disaster
I was clicking through Genearation Kill videos and came across this one. Guess Godfather and I have the same luck. I don't smoke either. Not to preach, but if you have children, talk to your doctor about HPV vaccinations for your children. Mine throat cancer was P16+ squamous cell carcinoma, P16+ meaning it was caused by HPV. I used to think that was only a problem for women, but surprise. It can lay dormant forever, or it can decide to mess up your day. Surgery and radiation saved me (and it sucked!!!), but now there's a vaccination that can prevent HPV from rearing its head and causing all sorts of health issues. Think about it, talk to your doctor, and have your children vaccinated. I'd like to think it will save them from the pain I went through. And on that fine note, Happy New Year everyone. I certainly hope 2021 is not the kick in the nutz that 2020 was.
My favorite character in the series. The reporter understood what Godfather's rank and duty were, but all of these conversations in these scenes were unknown to the reporter. So when the reporter left Iraq - he didn't really understand what Godfather's job entailed. I think he was a good CO and it seems many people agree. He was looking out for his men. He knew intel that no one in the unit knew, and he had higher ups that knew and saw the picture differently. The reporter never really got to understand Godfather when he left Iraq, maybe at that last conversation. Was that a debriefing? I think the reporter understood that he didn't like the business of war, and you can tell from the montage that only one person in that room did. I think those were very powerful scenes. That summed it up pretty well according to what I've read and seen interviews of the men who did this for real. What people say over and over is that Chance did an outstanding performance throughout this entire series. He has helped a lot of civilians like me understand what a USMC CO of an elite unit is like. At least one of them, anyway. Without his performance? I think this show wouldn't be the same. But I think we can all agree that it's true that the cast and the people involved in making this series all helped make a masterpiece. I won't compare the work of others, but it is one of my favorites. Band of Brothers comes to mind.

I thought Mr. Kelly did a phenomenal job. But, sorry, Ferrando struck me as being completely out of touch with his men and was focused solely on scoring a promotion. Actually, with the exception of Fick, all of the officers struck me as naive, incompetent, or self-absorbed... And Fick was just tolerable. I've read a few things that say the portrayals in GK aren't accurate... i.e. Capt. McGraw was actually a good officer. I hope that's correct because the portrayals in the series are not people I would want to serve under
“Good officer” my captain America was a total spazz. Constantly panicking when the going gets rough does nothing but damage group cohesion. He didn’t call his Shots, he fired with Enemy weapons confusing those under his command. Everyone had to carry his ass. And it wasn’t until one threatened to fuck him up did he start to straighten out.
There is actual footage of the real "Godfather" giving a speech and Chance Kelly absolutely killed it voicing him. I really thought that was unused footage from the show.

Great work, Chance Kelly! I’m a retired Marine Field Grade Officer and I’ve actually met Col Ferrando; you totally nailed it as a battalion commander.

@Ryan Ong I served under Col Ferrando back in 2007-2008, and it is hard to explain but there are two things for leaders of Marines - 1. Mission accomplishment and 2. Welfare of the Marines under your charge. In combat, No 1 is top priority knowing that Marines may die while accomplishing No 1 is not really considered welfare of the Marines. Hard line to follow...Col Ferrando was very good at No 1... and you wanted to be good at No 1 while under his command... that could come across as hardass for sure.

What I love about Col. Fernando’s portrayal here is that, while seemingly a good man for the most part, as a CO he makes decisions that both fuck things up (leaving behind the supply trucks with munitions and the battalion colors) and help further their objective (taking the airfield for example). He’s a realistic leader, no one is gonna make the right decisions 100% of the time every time. Especially when in charge of a unit like First Recon under those conditions. He’s not a good or bad guy necessarily. He’s just, there to do his job.
Nobody really should care about tradition if it puts you at a disadvantage. There really are no rules in war.
For me, he sets targets that encourage others to make stupid and dangerous decisions (leaving the ammo truck behind, intact and unguarded) and rolls the dice on a bet with a disastrous downside (a coy wiped out by heavier forces) and a limited upside (glory, attention, beating the Brits). But a great character anyway!

I've been on a binge of re-watching Generation Kill for the 3rd time and just echoing what everyone has said a billion times but Chance Kelly's portrayal of the Godfather is absolute bliss. After watching clips of the real Godfather it's jaw dropping amazing how much he captured his mannerisms and voice. Bravo Chance!

What a fantastic job he did with this difficult character!
At the risk of inviting an argument though, I'm surprised to find so many viewers laud the character he is playing as an exemplar of military mentality. In one respect, yes he is. But I felt like the writers were using this particular character to parody not how *well* the war was fought, but how the soldiers on the ground had very little idea of why they were doing anything. Obviously the real individual Godfather is based on might have done a standup job, but insofar as GK's writing and portrayal is concerned, I didn't feel like we were supposed to root for him.
For example. The speech about the wounded Iraqi civilian and possibility of casevac - he says "It's a shitty situation, but nobody put a gun to our heads and forced us to come here." But in the context of the episode, his decisions are the reason they are so exposed, it isn't some happenstance that dropped them there. Furthermore, it isn't even as though they were ordered that far forward - it was Godfather's own initiative, something he is eager to have recognised, that put them so far out of their line of supply. He even falls back on the technicalities of the RoE to explain why they needn't feel bad about the situation - missing the point completely, from the looks on the men's faces, that they didn't want to be exonerated. They wanted to take responsibility for their, and their corps', actions.
When he is explaining about the colours, that he ordered to be left behind to chase a bunk objective, he downplays his own role in it and chooses to promise more action, again seemingly oblivious of the fact that all of the men were acutely aware of how tactically exposed they were in pursuing it. The issue isn't that they lost the colours, its that they lost the colours because of a spur-of-the-moment decision that a truck full of supplies while working behind enemy lines isn't as important as beating some allies to their own objective.
The posturing about displeasing General Matthis reads sardonically, after Godfather approaches him on the MSR as he's berating a subordinate - and even though his contribution to the situation is laughably minor ("That'll be my Alpha company taking out their spotters - I expect these mortars to stop shortly") the dialogue is conducted so as to make him seem more like he's taking the opportunity of a colleague looking shit, to make himself look good, than the man of the hour delivering some good news to his unhappy boss.
Later, when Rolling Stone is interviewing him, he takes the opportunity to pontificate through what questions might have been asked. He summarises; "I didn't realise how much I would miss it," as the reporter looks on bemused "Getting shot at." This statement explains, more than anything else he says in the series, the haphazard, reckless, and seemingly aimless manoeuvre warfare we've been watching for seven episodes. Instead of the good causes the men signed up to fight, their actions were directed by the individual ego and hubris of their commander for little more than the attentions of a superior, or to one-up an ally or colleague.
A complex character, mysterious because he's the one with the answers, the master plan. But to me the moral of the show was that there was no plan - that in fact, even in as strange and perilous circumstances as combat, office politics is still a thing and important people make decisions for petty reasons.
I just found it odd that so many people celebrate and root for this character, but he reads very differently to me. Maybe I read him wrong all this time?
I agree somewhat. He seems to be a polarizing character, people either loving him or hating him. I think in terms of story, his character helps give the audience the bigger picture of what's happening, and helps explain the dilemmas they faced, like the casevac situation or how they had to turn away Iraqi civilians because the battalion was being targeted by artillery. He does act/says things that are insensitive/oblivious to the mood of those around him, but I feel like he's a fairly neutral character. In terms of incompetence I think the company commander fills that story role. And of course the PL is supposed to be the one you like.
One thing I want to point out that a lot of people seem to miss, (or maybe I didn't watch it right), is that they didn't rush to the air field just to show off. They had airborne units that were going to assault it UNLESS the enemy had armor. Recon needed to have eyes on to confirm or not. They were rushing to the objective so they could call them off if they did. I don't think this was part of the story but I'd wager they never planned to become decisively engaged.
@@Wasthere73 After they take the airfield, Sergeant Colbert points to the empty tanks and notes that if the tanks had been actively manned, they would all be dead.
I'd also note that in one scene his greatest fear is making move that General Matthias will disapprove of. Not anything about losing his men's lives or something of that sort. But rather simply the displeasure of his superior officer. Shows him to be a careerist, concerned about his future in the Marines rather the immediate problem of keeping him men alive while fulfilling his objectives.
This is exactly where confusion comes in. Every example given was good but there was always more that we could not see as we were not privy to that information. He had a higher up too as he stated many times. There will never be a perfect situation for anything and so a perfect solution cannot exist. He also cannot downplay his own decisions outright. So even if he admits a mistake it cannot be as if it was just pure incompetence as it wasn't he has to act on the knowledge of many changing factors. At first I liked his character, then I didn't, then I realized im not supposed to like him. He's literally trying to juggle many things that he himself does not have complete control or power over. One thing that I noticed was how absolutely crucial keeping morale up was. Everytime he speaks its like another war cry another understanding that success is around the bend. It felt like that was the leaders true jobs to not allow their men to feel a sense of hopelessness in what they were doing but to try to get them to understand that everything they did was a part of a bigger plan. Also, i hated his rationale for somewhat allowing his leaders incompetence but at the same time I completely understood why he couldn't just start uprooting ranks based on complaints. Its bad but it had to happen only after some crazy bad things happen to not have a shadow of a doubt which is regrettable for the victims. He did his best and he had to always give a positive result to the higher ups or things would be messy for him and the men as ppl on the ground often times dont understand what is needed to accomplish the mission. So i respect him now. He did his job.
Nope, you read him spot on. His leadership isn't something to be admired. He was reckless and lucky. He's portrayed as an idiot. In fact, intelligent are berated and the ignorant lauded in this command. It's laughable. In fact my wife and I laughed throughout the series due to its accuracy and how ridiculous it all is. This series was recommended to me by a grunt Marine who invaded Iraq, recognized the ridiculousness, recognized the accuracy, and figured I'd enjoy it, having been a Marine invading Iraq at the same time, albeit in a different capacity (air wing). In hindsight, what we knew at the time, that these people are ridiculous, was proven correct, making this series all the more hilarious...and sad. But this is the reality of much of the Marine Corps, sadly. Whether you shave daily in combat it more important than a great many actually important factors.
I just started watching the series, late I know. This man not only nailed his performance with incredible nuance and sophistication, he produced the aura of a leader and the essence of a Marine. I would watch anything this gentleman did, independent of genre just to support his career.

Mr. Kelly, you were fantastic. You absolutely have the presence and order of a battalion commander. You were a Lieutenant Colonel through and through. Fantastic job done.
The show took an interesting interpretation of the officers in First Recon during this invasion. Evan Wright's accounting of Lt Col Ferrando was as a staff officer dropped into First Recon who brought his rear echelon b.s. into a unit that was used to more freedom in their operations. I think he used the phrase "Parade Officer" to describe Godfather. First Recon didn't really think much of any of the officers, particularly Godfather; according to Wright, most of the officers who came along for the invasion normally operated at home or some other base, rarely in country with the platoons. The show plays many of the officers and senior enlisted to be buffoons, but they take it easy by comparison on Godfather's depiction. He supposedly was pretty far out of his element, but Godfather got his Marines to achieve their objectives, so how bad could he be? Maybe David Simon wanted to save some face and concentrate the incompetence with Encino Man, Casey Kasem, and Captain America and leave Godfather to be truly a father figure to this cobbled bunch of Marines. Also, many of the lines Chance Kelly says are direct quotes from Evan Wright's reporting.

Excellent point. I forget that probably many more just saw the series. Having read the book previous to the series coming out that understanding of how the enlisted soldiers viewed the officers and brought that into viewing the series. The series does a good job of showing the incompetence in certain officers while not making it as much of the theme as it was in the book. Great breakdown. I must say Chance Kelly's portrayal and use of direct quotes that are actual is masterful.

I remember my edition had an afterword from Wright, written a few years later. His judgments seemed to have softened a bit since the time of the book. But maybe that was due to getting older and nostalgic.

4:15- 7:10 godfather talks for 3 minutes explaining why he couldn't evac the child. the soilders/ officers gave 0 fucks about what he was saying all they saw was a hurt child, they said nothing just kept looking at him until he called in evac. they basically told godfather he had to evac the kid. great scene.
Next day they see another wounded child, and the next day maybe 2. It's all meaningless anyway.

It's a really good scene. Shows the balancing of evils Godfather had to do all the time, and his men telling him he's wrong without a single word of contention. A debate without word and without compromising the respect of the chain of command.
Disagree with the assessment. Lt. Col. Ferrando intended to evac the child from the very beginning. He went through the explanation in order to impress on his Officers and NCO's the resources necessary to do so, and how it would affect the battalion's fighting readiness. If he never intended to evac the child, he would have given his orders without explanation.
You got it wrong. His statement in regards to limited options they have to evac a wounded child was impressive. Because of their current situation, they have to asses and think carefully due to many unknowns and with them being so very few.
He was superb in this role!

I've probably watched this show half a dozen times, and I'm just now realizing the absurdity of his speech about losing the supply truck. Godfather wasn't upset that they lost food, ammo, and other supplies that were vital to their effort, but he was upset about losing the battalion colors. Understandable that losing your colors would have a negative impact on morale, but everything else to Godfather seemed to be an after thought. To the guys like Colbert, Espera and Doc Brian, losing the supplies themselves was critically damaging to them, as they pretty much need them to survive since they're all so far behind the enemy lines. But to Godfather that doesn't matter. All that mattered to him was the loss of the colors. In the show it doesn't seem like he is able to see how his actions are going to affect his men, and since he's so focused on the big picture and the plans of General Mattis, he completely loses focus and control over everything below him in the chain of command.
It bugs me how he says "Ferrando takes full responsibility for it" and not "I take full responsibility for it". He's "taking responsibility" while distancing himself from it by referring to himself in the 3rd person. Seems like an inability to fully own up to a mistake.
From what I heard, godfather was not a full experienced field commander, not truly experienced at leading men in the field.

In the Marine Corps, losing your unit colors is unacceptable in any situation. This is drilled into every Marine virtually from day one of boot camp. The Corps is steeped in tradition.

A Character *to* respect, and a Character *with* respect
I loved this series. If you conjured an image of an US Marine, he would probably look a lot like Chance Kelly with that strong chin and powerful neck. He is no stereo type in this, but a thoughtful leader who coldly explains the inherent logic of military engagement without equivocation or sentiment: "No one asked you to come here...we are all volunteers".
Sorry to say, I thought the show was up and down. But this guy was special. If you're a fan of actors, this guy makes you sit up and take notice. Raw, but a natural.

The crazy thing is this unit and others did a lot. Think about all those scenes the men seem like they hit every time. I don't it was every shot obviously, but these dudes were all the top of marksmanship experts. These are elite troops. One time in the series you know it's pretty realistic. You can tell the way they're cool under fire is intentional and not thematic. Most of them were just angry of annoyed. And that is what a unit as trained and ready for combat as this one does. CO Col. Ferrando was doing his job well and it isn't about battle streamers and you can tell. This was this man's life work. It is a very, very serious job and the men in this video do not react in fear to combat. They made mistakes but generally the end result was them making the right call. That's why I think Godfather is the most interesting character of all and I agree that he made good decisions. He was doing a job he knew required total confidence and conviction. He didn't see Captain America do that, but he also saw Lt Fick was one of the best. I do think he recognized that the trust of your men was everything. It it what kind of elite unit are you. Your job is to be elite and some lost their cool, and some weren't elite. The airfield scenes are a best at interpreting Godfather showing what some watching the show didn't catch. Godfather may have proven incorrect or just that their mission of disruption of organized conflict was achieved. That's part of why this show feels kinda Mad Max. These days soldiers tend to have a lot more information. But remember they were men who followed their mission and did what they were ordered. That was their job. It's up to you to make an opinion

I think godfather handled that situation with the shot kid really well. He was 100%right. His priority had to be the mission and the men. He explained the precarious situation really well and made the men understand how dangerous it was what they were asking for. In the end he did the descent thing but his men aren't likely to question his orders again

He gave Ferrando an opportunity to strike a hard target and secure it, Ferrando realized this wasn't a suggestion and knew Mattis wanted him to take it

They even showed in the show that hesitant officers wouldn't be tolerated as it completely jeopardizes the American way of war which is Manuever Warfare, even the slightest bit of hesitation can lead to disaster

I was clicking through Genearation Kill videos and came across this one. Guess Godfather and I have the same luck. I don't smoke either.
Not to preach, but if you have children, talk to your doctor about HPV vaccinations for your children. Mine throat cancer was P16+ squamous cell carcinoma, P16+ meaning it was caused by HPV. I used to think that was only a problem for women, but surprise. It can lay dormant forever, or it can decide to mess up your day. Surgery and radiation saved me (and it sucked!!!), but now there's a vaccination that can prevent HPV from rearing its head and causing all sorts of health issues. Think about it, talk to your doctor, and have your children vaccinated. I'd like to think it will save them from the pain I went through.
And on that fine note, Happy New Year everyone. I certainly hope 2021 is not the kick in the nutz that 2020 was.
My favorite character in the series. The reporter understood what Godfather's rank and duty were, but all of these conversations in these scenes were unknown to the reporter. So when the reporter left Iraq - he didn't really understand what Godfather's job entailed. I think he was a good CO and it seems many people agree. He was looking out for his men. He knew intel that no one in the unit knew, and he had higher ups that knew and saw the picture differently. The reporter never really got to understand Godfather when he left Iraq, maybe at that last conversation. Was that a debriefing? I think the reporter understood that he didn't like the business of war, and you can tell from the montage that only one person in that room did. I think those were very powerful scenes. That summed it up pretty well according to what I've read and seen interviews of the men who did this for real. What people say over and over is that Chance did an outstanding performance throughout this entire series. He has helped a lot of civilians like me understand what a USMC CO of an elite unit is like. At least one of them, anyway.
Without his performance? I think this show wouldn't be the same. But I think we can all agree that it's true that the cast and the people involved in making this series all helped make a masterpiece. I won't compare the work of others, but it is one of my favorites. Band of Brothers comes to mind.

And to all the service members who were there. I salute them. It does weigh heavily, doesn't it. Your performance means a lot to many people. Veterans and civilians. It will tell a story and represent a man who was absolutely dedicated to his job. It was one of hardest jobs.
I hope you and Col. Ferrando are doing well. The years fly by but that time feels like it was yesterday. It's a generation of people that are still fighting. Many of them struggle.
I'd toast both of you. My work is different but I understand having to see and do things that you replay over and over.

I thought Mr. Kelly did a phenomenal job. But, sorry, Ferrando struck me as being completely out of touch with his men and was focused solely on scoring a promotion.
Actually, with the exception of Fick, all of the officers struck me as naive, incompetent, or self-absorbed... And Fick was just tolerable.
I've read a few things that say the portrayals in GK aren't accurate... i.e. Capt. McGraw was actually a good officer. I hope that's correct because the portrayals in the series are not people I would want to serve under
The story was written from the reporters perspective
“Good officer” my captain America was a total spazz. Constantly panicking when the going gets rough does nothing but damage group cohesion. He didn’t call his Shots, he fired with Enemy weapons confusing those under his command. Everyone had to carry his ass. And it wasn’t until one threatened to fuck him up did he start to straighten out.
There is actual footage of the real "Godfather" giving a speech and Chance Kelly absolutely killed it voicing him. I really thought that was unused footage from the show.
