AES50 Does Not Sync Between Midas M32R & DL32 Stage Box

  • Hey Friends! The AES50 sync saga continues! I recently purchased a Sound Tools Super Cat Cable Drum to connect my Midas M32R to the Midas DL32 stage box. The box would not sync to the console using the reel. The reel length is spec'd 100m which translates into 328ft which is the limit for cat lines. This length is just a bit too long for AES50. Cutting 25ft off the cable solved the problem! If you are having trouble connecting your stage box to your console, this may help!

X32 Behringer fbook group admin here...and sound company owner... it is a well known fact the spec distance of 300’ is under “best” conditions - dave rat even said in a video, to be safe you need to drop to 250’ or less... also , i took my rat sound cable and installed my own ends, also using the internal braided shield like a whisk broom physically touching against the ethercon shell. This improves the shield connection and provides continuity to the shell (which is also spec’d)

I see that your reel is Sommer Cable cable on a Schill cable reel.
From a European perspective it's one of the best combinations of brands to have.
I personally use Schill reels for (among other things) power cable and Sommer Club series microphone cable. Very happy with both!

Things worthy of note: Neutrik stipulates in their ethercon installation guide that the release tab of rj45 connector must be cut off. It rather curious that SoundTools didn’t do that. I don’t how probable it is, but this could result in a connection that could become impossible to release.
Re crooked connector: I find it best to tighten them whilst in a mated condition (like a coupling adapter).
Re flexible CAT cable: Canare (the Japanese company that makes the video cable you use) also makes shielded Cat5e cable that is super nice and flexible. I am very satisfied with the sample I ordered.

Sometime in the last 2 weeks I came across someone in some forum having the same issues. Major problems syncing with a 300 cable.
If I recall correctly, everyone in the comments hacked the cables down to 200 ft which solved the problem. I think someone mentioned the only ethercon cables they have found to work at 300 ft was Elite Core.

As far as I know, the actual outer barrel of the Ethercon is supposed to be grounded as well. And the maximum length is 80m. I think Musictribe makes some sort of an extender that amlifies the signal.

Surprised no one has advised you on the correct specs for the X/M32 cables...The Rat sound is fine except for length. 80m MAX...Also, if the neutrik isnt clicking in, you don't have a solid connection....add it all up and that's prob your issue. Try it on a correct spec Cat5e, STP with ground wire connected to shell on each end. This has been a known issue for a very long, long time with these consoles. Hope you get it sorted! ymmv... Cheers!~

For AES50 I use at max a cable length of 70 Meters (~229 Feet). With anything longer than that you start to get drop-outs. If you need a longer connection tho, you should look into something like the Klark Teknik DN9610 :)

Thanks for the heads up on the 9610! I need to order one to evaluate it.

Wow. Have you spoken to Dave about this? I'm sure he'd like to know.

Would you recommend the midas line of consoles over the rest out there in that price margin if someone was looking to buy a new one? I get so many mixed vibes. Thanks Scott Conard

Hi mr. Billy do you have any suggestion for good router for ipad/tablet user like me..by the way i'm using x32 rack

I am using a Luxul ABR-4500 router, a POE switch and a separate Ubiquiti access point. I like the separate components vs a all in one unit. The ubiquiti access points are excellent.
