    Joey literally paid to win school popularity.
    Sadly the price was way, WAY, too high

    Advice from someone who worked with victims.
    1. You statistically are likely to have your data stolen at some point. It's inevitable these days. (Mine was once taken by a job application site that the job centre suggested).
    2. You're never alone, it's often less targetted than you think. A "pro" will try to scam 2-300 random people in an hour and some of that sticks.
    3. Don't click links, login to your accounts as you would normally. Large delivery companies, banks and credit card companies have entire teams dealing with it and they won't stop you reporting it further or letting you call them back on a number you know. (I used to advise people to call the police when they threatened, it's a good thing to do depending where in the world you are. Just don't use the emergency line.)
    TLDR: Don't be embarrassed. Report it. It happens more than you think.

      2FA isn't enough? Assuming your accounts are compromised, but not your phone

    • @MillenniumDays
      @MillenniumDays Před rokem +4

      @@nelisezpasce I always found they where more likely to try and set up a new account using your details rather than hi-jacking an account. At least when it came to things like online credit cards. Many companies unfortunately leak data at some point which is hard to do anything about yourself.
      If they're going to go for a hijack, they'll probably aim for your email and start requesting password resets. 2FA will pretty much prevent that, especially the ones that alert you on your phone. As long as everything isn't attached to the same email address or stored in the same place you should be fine but there's never a 100% guarantee with how much tech and viruses progress each year.

      @Psyda Před rokem +5

      Should add that if you get hacked/scammed and money is taken or charges are placed on your credit card, you can just call your bank and report it as fraud. It will reverse charged refunding you and you'll get a new card number.
      It's bad to fall for a scam, but not the end of the world(or your life savings.)

    Reader's Digest was a thing back in the early to mid 90's. The books have wholesome anecdotal stories, and whatever Garnt got.
    Their readership subscription went so low towards the end of the 90's that they started to do the thing Garnt was talking about. I saw them, but I remember someone would have a subscription back in the Philippines and would be shared with my mom's friendgroup in her office.

      My very gullible grandfather did the same thing as Garnt. He would keep buying books that came with letters telling he's close to winning. Also the letters were written with his name, because they obviously had him in their database and they did the thing where they print it with names form a database, but of course he didn't understand that and he thought someone is personally writing these letters specifically to him.

    Back in like 2005 my mom got an internet pop up saying she was the 10.000th visitor or something like that and that we had to call a phone number before a certain time to claim a prize.
    We live in Scandinavia and the number went to someone in the US who seemed really surprised to get a call from a foreign country.
    Somehow it ended up costing us about a $1000. But it did teach us not to believe everything on the Internet.

    i was waiting for a parcel and i got a message from the actual phone number of the post office here saying i needed to pay a redelivery fee for missing delivery so i did it and put my card details in and then they tried to spend like £300 on furniture? Funniest part is they messed w the wrong bitch bc i had like €2 to my name lmao, so thankfully didn’t actually lose any money, but those scammers are getting too good these days, literally like it was from the same number that the post office usually texts from??

    I nearly fell for a scam in my home country. Somehow scammers figured out how to impersonate government official phone numbers, I have no idea how. So they were trying to scam me by talking about someone trying to hack my bank account. Then I was asked where I was, and I told him the area, and the name of the city (the old name, cuz no one likes the new one), and when they sounded a bit weird when they confirmed my whereabouts. First of all they asked if I'm in the city (using the new name) although I already told them the old name of the city. And then they also sounded weird when they tried to read a street name. It sounded too unnatural for a person who's been living in this country for a whole life. Anyways, I somehow dodged this scam, and only when I came back home I heard that after the Ukraine war outbreak, some scammers from Russia and Ukraine started targeting citizens of Kazakhstan. This made me so furious tbh. But yeah. Glad I didn't fall for this one
