Chance The Rapper: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Robin Hilton | July 5, 2017 - Chance The Rapper knew he wanted to try a different approach for his Tiny Desk performance, so he decided to do something he said he hadn't done in a long time. He wrote a poem. More specifically, he wrote a poem in the short time it took him to ride from his hotel in Washington, D.C. to the NPR Music offices. Calling it "The Other Side," Chance debuted it in the middle of his remarkable set, reading from his notes written out in black marker on sheets of typing paper.
"I still have all the keys that are of no use to me," he began. "They used to, though. On the other side was a mansion on a hill, complete with L.A. pools and fireplaces and a rim made specifically for people that lie about being six feet to dunk on."
Chance didn't get much further before he was interrupted by one of the hazards of performing in an actual, working office: a building-wide page for someone to call the mailroom. But Chance rolled with it, cracking a quick joke before starting over again.
The night before arriving for his Tiny Desk set, Chance performed for more than 23,000 people at Jiffy Lube Live, an outdoor theater in Bristow, VA. The sold out arena and amphitheater shows of his current tour offer a stark contrast to the first time I saw Chance in concert back in 2013. Then, he was a 19-year old upstart rapping and singing for a handful of people at a tiny club in Austin, Texas. A lot has changed since then, and quickly. Chance's most recent mix tape, Coloring Book, was widely ranked among the best albums of 2016 (some called it a masterpiece) and featured collaborations with a cast of hip-hop luminaries, from Kanye West to Lil Wayne and T-Pain.
Chance's poem "The Other Side" was sandwiched between an opening version of "Juke Jam" from Coloring Book and another special gift just for his Tiny Desk appearance, a moving cover of Stevie Wonder's 1974 song "They Won't Go When I Go."
Coloring Book is available now:

Nico? Nah, that Donnie Trumpet 😂.
Chance just looks like the cleanest human in the world even his teeth match his shirt
2:53 he got a white grill no?
Theo Johnson no
Nothing but God working with him and in him
@@qaddyshack6144 working in him? Kinda sus
yeah but his eyes tryna look left n right at the same time
Chance's voice naturally sounds studio produced lmao
You do know this is all mixed it’s not raw
zach googoo explain please. I don't know how this stuff works
basically they edit his voice post production or in real life, for example compressing it or equalizing the high and low frequencies
Tenzing kyinzom nooo. For real?
yes, but It doesn't change his voice, just cleans it and makes it more clear
Is no one gonna mention how imMACULATE HIS SKIN IS???? He’s literally glowing.
lilmissinger YES, practically with no blemishes. He’s going to look youthful into his 60s.
Alien face
Bradley boxer look alike
it's from all of the Acid. take notes.
Jewelisa my brother takes acid and his skin isn’t clear
You know he’s from a church when the songs over but the piano still plays while he talks .

True
I think this was really cool. This place is not for crowd pleasing, it's a place where the artists can do whatever is in their hearts, without feeling the pressure to always play this song or that song. I wish more artists would take that road. It's a brave and honest one.
betodaval I wish I could retweet this a million times
Kinsey R c
betodaval rough one though...
Excellently put
Yo this response is beautiful
“hey everybody.. ummm, I’m Chance.” he’s adorable.

@@laurinmagtacos790 lol yeah we now realize his wholesome persona was an act
@@Omar-bi9zn if you go on twitter you can find out why his manager is suing him in the lawsuit documents, but mainly watch Shawn Cee’s video about it.
@@PurgPurg I didnt inform myself on the artist. My human instinct told me
Right. I love it.

Tis truth! We must all keep this alive.
Chance made a brilliant choice recruiting thirdstory 😩💪🏻
Yes yes yes he did!!
Absolutely
are they the people singing? hes smart for surrounding himself with super talented ppl with tremendous musical minds.
Yes, the three very talented male background singers are Thirdstory
Yes but I need to see them with their own. And bring Eryn Allen Kane through while they're at it
Is it me or does juke jam sound better in this than the actual song
Just wanted to chime in, that's normally the case with Acoustic songs.. Its because you feel the true emotion in it rather having a beat coat the feelings
Bryce case vlogs its way better
Every single live version of his songs sound so much better than the studio it’s weird
ikr
man, I find that getting to know new artists through Tiny Desk ruins their studio albums for me, most of the time! haha. Love the live versions
Coco butter kisses would’ve slapped here!!!
No freaking cap. Would’ve been great
I agree 🙇🏽♀️
you're right
I can't believe we didn't get it 😥
I met chance when I was his artist liaison in New Zealand's new year festival rhythm and vines.. I can vouch for how he's one of the most down to earth guys I've ever met! He asked me how old I was and what I was upto with life. I said "19 and still trying to find my bearings" he goes "oh wow thought you were older, but anyway guess what I was doing at 19? Just smoking joints everyday and going to church a bit on sundays. I am 23 years old now (24now) and look where I am, crazy right.. goes to show you can do anything man, no cliche" I will forever remember this chat.
If you don't like his music why do you bother going to his videos?
Dmitry Kats His music's dope tho
Dmitry Kats His Dad is not a politician, he's a campaign manager. Not the same thing.
Dmitry Kats damn angry ass green is not a good color homie
Dmitry Kats And yet, here you are, Dmitry! The mirror will tell u more than I will.
They way he says "we use to roll at the rink" is the sexiest thing in the world.
Ta'lor Pinkspen yasssss I thought I was the only one thinkin that! lol

The trumpet playing is so amazing.
Tayla that man Donnie!!
not a trumpet
Its a flugelhorn
Mellophone
it’s a flugelhorn. not a trumpet. not a mellophone.
Juke Jam wasn't a fav of mine from Coloring Book, but after listening to this performance, and how raw and expose all the instruments and voices are I can't help but have a new found appreciation for it ahhhh
yea if you dont like a song on an ambulm then u will like it in real life idk how he does it but some of his bodies of music just sound better in real life
Same here....must be that canadian kid that was featured in it.
Goldplaya you hear the song somewhere else other than real life?
I loved juke jam the moment i heard it 😫
it was my fucking favourite
Is it just me or was the Juke Jam performance lowkey better than the album version
Delano Callender I like both but they're very different... almost like 2 different songs I think that's why I like this one so much
Delano Callender It's definitely you. Chance is not really a singer so hearing it stripped down was not his best. Especially when he tried to sing Beiber's part
Shaquille Sunflower the rawness and emotion Chance puts into it is what gives it the charm, not so much the actual singing.
Shaquille Sunflower i dunno man, Chance isn't a big vocalist but I do like his tone and overall sound when trying to sing more than Bieber.
Definitely has more personality when Chance does it but my mans Beibs, in my opinion, was perfect for this song.
The Other Side by Chance The Rapper
I still have keys that are of no use to me,
They used to though.
On the other side was a mansion on a hill,
Complete with LA pools and fireplaces,
And a rim made specifically for people who lie about being six feet to dunk on,
Where a piano was for decoration and an old record player was actually for the hoes,
I was never awakened by the twisting of a door knob,
Benzo’s kissed me goodnight,
The bars finally stopped working,
They used to though.
On the other side was a presidential suite,
Complete with living rooms and empty beds and a rainfall showered fixture and the freedom to smoke big dope,
And smoking fees also,
And the possibility of making a beautiful girl I just met, map out in her mind just how many times her apartment could fit in this room,
If I could just get in.
The card stopped working,
They used to though.
On the other side was a family,
Complete with carpet stains and big loves and “its your turn’s" and toys all over the place
(I almost fell and broke my fucking neck),
And responsibility and refrigerator magnets,
And days on the couch and nights on the couch,
And lines drawn in the sand and comebacks that cross the line,
And a horn line from my favourite make-up song plays,
And just like that, we've rehabbed a home,
DeBarge stopped working.
I still have all the keys that are of no use to me
They used to work though.
Thank you 😘
Peoppe honestly sleeping on how figuratively meaningful this is.
@@chrismontano613 right. This poem bangs. It's just as complex and meaningful as his rhymes. Kinda interesting people wanna hear him rap but not his poetry. Makes you wonder if they're really ever listening to the music.
This is incredible
english isnt my first languae so i still kinda dont understand the meanings, can someone please help elaborate?
like i get its about houses and family but
I love how humble he is. Introducing everyone like that
The audio quality is insane😮
ur gay
NPR is godly with their live recordings
STOP IT NPR!
Stop surprising me with such a varied collection of amazing musicians and stop knocking me out and blowing my mind with each performance :)
you took my words away! hahaha
Not Right Music you really did take all the words I needed to say
How DARE they introduce the world to things they wouldn't otherwise consider!
I love this song it's just so relaxing to listen too
Just amazing!
that horn is practically singing I swear. I love how smoothly it follows the lyrics
That trumpet at the back is angelic
The instrument is actually called a flugelhorn, check it out.
Donnie Trumpet aka Nico Segal, he’s got an album out now. Check him out, or the album he did with Chance under the name Donnie Trumpet and the Social Experiment
Say what u want about chance, hes is without a doubt one of the most talented and unique new artists of our generation.
GameWizardds he’s not new, been around since 2010-11 w/ 10 Day
Him and Tyler the creator
What do people say about him...?
Next to Donald Glover
Maybe you are a bit young, but thats still new.
I just realized NPR Tiny Desk Concert is essentially the new MTV unplugged lol
WELCOME TO THE SHOW! Pretty good, huh? :}
better than unplugged.
Right!
Emmanuel 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I was thunking VH1 story tellers
Chance is a generational talent. Ignore his band, ignore his voice. Look at his words alone. Spoken in truth. He tells stories. The other side. His fork in the road. Beautiful. It’s so beautiful
wait really know one is gonna talk about how his poem was literally the best ever ? also who watching in 2020
TALENT OUT OF THE ROOF
all of them!
Patrick Foley you see there is this funny thing about music where touching another peoples soul is key and it don't matter if a Performance is 100% on point. Music ain't about perfection but if it is for you...well, good for you idc :)
Patrick Foley yea seriously
Joanna rhn h
Patrick Foley I think having minimal energy was the point... it's a chill song genius.
The double stuffed oreo quartet in the back was a nice touch
Lmfao
😂😂😂
😭😭😭😭
Lol smh
Bruh 😂😂😂
As a person who plays all the backing instruments for vocalists (drums, keyboard, guitar, bass) and sings, the idea of standing in front of a band without an instrument is absolutely crazy to me. So much respect to people like Chance who can just casually do it. I don’t think people really appreciate how much talent that takes.
and this is somehow the same guy that made hot shower and ballin flossin. Lets hope we see this chance again one day
tim ahern don’t get me wrong his new album is very personal i just don’t think he used his fullest potential like he should’ve
he’s a full package artist . when his first few tapes came out nobody listened to his authenticity that much . i used to get clowned for listening to him . but NOW he thinks about stats and taking care of his family while doing something he loves . so he has to make HITS .
it’s a catchy song ...it doesn’t make sense but it’s a hit 🤷🏾♀️
how about sun come down, we go high, five year plan
Ezzz3 _ still not the same. Miss the acid rap chance
I would like to see frank ocean on here
Hashtag A plz
Hashtag A dude that would be to fucking good I doubt he'd agree to do it honestly
Hashtag A absolutely not. He boring af
That'd be great! ... If he wasn't so hard to book...
impossible
Why isn't Chance getting any credit for that poem in the comments? That was beautiful
Bryan Curtis. It was aight
Honestly, I could have done without the poem.
Another song instead of the poem would be better.
Why isn't he getting credit for the song after! I actually criedddd
Because it's not his song haha. He did a beautiful rendition of it but he doesn't deserve *credit* for it.
Chance getting interrupted by the loud speaker during his poem is very poetic
52 years old and I never thought anyone could replace Mac Miller in my heart, but Chance you are with out a doubt on a whole other level that no one can touch, thank you I will listen to you every day!!!!!!!PURE GENIUS!!!!
Two different artists, both irreplaceable, dont disrespect Mac like that
Chris Montano facts they both Goats

@@RyanMatson how did he disrespect Mac Miller? He said chance replaced him... nothing disrespectful

seriously that's almost my favorite part. It's so smooth
Nick S not a trumpet
@@JuJuTSO mellowphone?
@@akatsuki_turtle its a Flugelhorn, He's got a gorgeous sound with nice creative ideas. He doesn't take too much attention away from anyone else and he blends really well. It's not an easy thing to do as a horn player
Elliot Fardad yeah, super hard to get that thing in tune
He's such a sweetie. I love his vulnerability and how there is a certain shyness to him

Nella Rohan I’m not a fan, and I don’t listen to him. But he’s so chill and humble. Underrated in general.
His performance of Juke Jam is just as pure as the original song, if not more...
Dillon Eason i cried
way more
Wayyy better live imo
11:38 chance choking up from the backing vocals. So good.
Him saying “it’s okay” makes me so comfortable 🌊 💚
Chance is a smart dude in many respects. That's why he's doing so well being unsigned. He's very calculated. Even the poem being the intermission/interlude to lead to the next musical story.. this man is awesome.
Not really. Can't take criticism, is a bland musician, and severely overrates himself.
Victor the Kid “bland” lol
Victor the Kid ooh got me there bud lmfao
Victor the Kid can’t say that I’ve ever heard him overrating himself actually I find him underrating himself generally and bland is one thing he is not🤷♂️ you used two real bad arguments
@@necromax13 clearly you have poor taste in music, art, and poetry.

Honestly appreciate Chance being honest and vulnerable enough to share that poem with us. Really enjoy his vibe and his energy and the fresh and clean and humble feelings he gives off. Wish I could hang with him for a day and just learn and listen.

Other than 'I was a rock' I'm not sure
idk what my guy is doing but you can see the love in his eyes

I love how astute he is as a writer/performer he exudes a quiet calm confidence that drips of humility. His poetry, fluid, poignant and smooth unfolding with ease .... poetry fan here... wasn’t a big fan of Juke Jam before but this performance just turned it up for me... ‘When I go’ sounded beyond in this set!
Even this guy's speaking voice is just so calming, I couldn't even imagine arguing with him, you'd just have a calm and productive discussion lol.. This performance was just *b e a u t i f u l*

I feel like a different person now than before I experienced this performance. What an incredible artist, and an incredible group of artists. I am so grateful to have seen this. Bravo!
Chance...appreciate the humility, sensitivity and openness of your shared performance.
that poem was fucking beautiful
Andy4Prez not hating, but i didn't understand the poem. could you explain what it was about?
this could be wrong but what i get from it is that the keys are different stages of his life, as in what he wanted to attain at the time or certain memories he had at the time. those aspirations from before hold no use to him now but he holds onto them because it made him who he is. i think when he says the keys stop working, it means its no longer what he wants. i think it's about finding what makes him happy
Andy4Prez exactly what I got from it.
i think, on another note, it also refers to the potential futures and dreams we have had at some point in our life. the means to reach those futures and dreams are still within us, but unusable because we have already chosen a path that makes reaching out for those possibilities impossible. The potential to be those things is still there though, but they USED to work and now not anymore. "We still have all the keys that are of no use to us anymore. But they used to work, though." +Andy4Prez explanation is also spot on. it really depends on how the poem made you feel :)
Yeah, poems just aren't my thing I guess.
The shoutouts to Tank and the Bangas and Gregory Porter!
Amy S chance is the best for that
You have to LOVE Chance, he brings a freshness to tunes that's pure, unique yet REAL... salute to the trumpet player & singers, CRISP as his teeth & white tee
