  • When, as an independent artist, you record your own music, you typically are the owner of the sound recording.
The sound recording is one of two intellectual property rights to any song (the other right being the composition, aka the publishing). In the attached video (part 3 in our series on the Basics of Music Copyrights and Royalties) I identify and explain the 9 (yes, nine!) most common ways that ownership of the sound recording generates revenue for you.
If you want to maximize the money you make from your music, don’t sleep on this video. If you weren’t aware of it before, on any one release, the bulk of the payments for the exploitation of that release go to the owner of the sound recording.
    Knowledge is indeed power.

The other power of songwriting/publishing is that they are the only ones paid for terrestrial radio airplay in the United States, since there is no radio royalty for sound recordings in the US.

You are correct - we are joined by North Korea, Iran & China. And it's way worse than that, because when our stuff is played in other countries, they don't pay our Artists or Labels because we don't pay theirs. There are ways around this if you wish to get paid "over there" but it gets complicated...

    Who owns the Sound Recording?
If you paid to record your own music as an indie artist you are the owner.
If you are on a record label they are the owner.
Most music is consumed through streaming
    Royalites from:
    Streaming Rights:
The Bulk of the royalties are paid the Sound Recording Owner, directly from the platform to the artist. 80-85% of streaming royalties go to the owner of the sound recording the remaining 15-20% are paid through a PRO. If you sign up for CD baby that will be your payout around 85%
Neighbouring Rights: (radio) Royalties are paid to the owners of the sound recording and the artist
CZcams Rights: The monies that ADs generate you get a piece
Music Downloads: Bulk of the money goes to the ownership of the sound recording
    Sync Licensing:
*The other power of songwriting/publishing is that they are the only ones paid for terrestrial radio airplay in the United States, since there is no radio royalty for sound recordings in the US.

What the difference beetwen money tha producer \artist can have with owning master records % + writers share on BMI , and in case owning only writers share% on BMI. For which Money Master Records work? All that you mentiuoned regarding mehanical royalties and etc. Artists can make with a PRO , but for YOuTube monetization artist have to won the MAster?
