    Selling your music through these platforms is much like consigning a vehicle for sale through a car dealership I think. They want a commission from you and you are supplying them with free inventory to sell. They really don't care to push the sale because they are not out anything while you wait for the salesmen to sell it. Usually they get paid before you do. It seems it becomes a waiting game that you never know what will happen and when.

    I am glad you brought this up. I had CDBABY for years, and then alas, a stupid scam label Bluepie made me take down my music with you, and put it with them, and I never saw a dime. Distrokid is a problem because they have AI and will not answer back. I did SONGTRADR starting in 2020 and I was very happy. But if I don't pay $49 a month to go PRO, all my music will come down again. They said I could do "Distrokid" for 40% off the 1st year, but since you are now saying it is going to be bought out, I guess I won't do that. The problem is, every time your music is taken down and put back up, you lose all your stats. My album "Everything in good time" has 3 songs that had anywhere between 8900 and 31000 streams, so I don't want to lose those stats. What should I do? I have to make the decision by Julu 8. Thanks!

    No way in hell. Vinyl is limited as are CD's. The difference is that with CD's they can sample at higher rates to achieve great results. Analog tape changes this altogether. Analog is infinite and your limitations rely greatly on your record and reproducing equipment. If I had to pick one format, for me, it would be professional analog tape.

    The frequency response of vinyl has massive dips, peaks and roll offs at the high and low spectrum. Initially phono inputs have R.I.I.A. equalization to flatten out to a great degree this response. The EQ for vinyl will be adjusted further in the mastering mix, improved further by turntables amps and speakers that flatten out, thus improve the idiosyncrasies of vinyl. In the seventies and eighties I'd listen to classical music on Deutsch a Gramophone- brand records on a high quality stereo system, and was impressed with the natural sound, as if I was seated in front of the orchestra. The other day I listened to this brand, Deutsch, on CD, and was unimpressed. It was probably mastered to sound best on vinyl. Yet as I altered the EQ with my parametric equalizer, it sounded just as realistic or better than vinyl! Also there is emotional conditioning to the sound of the format one listens to for years.

    • @tonyvv
      @tonyvv Před 2 dny

      a. I don't know anyone who is selling a download for $20 and ACTUALY selling any. b. You do this not for the sales revenue as much as for the new customer (i.e. fan) acquisition, which you can't do with a $20 download. No new fan trying to figure out if they might like you will drop $20 for a download. They'll just check you out on streaming, and you'll never know who they are...

I would send the CD and then having their email I would begin to build the persons trust and slowly ramp up the selling/marketing. Also is there any hits songs on that CD? I've run these types of campaigns over the last 7 years and agree that many potential fans will baulk at $8 when you are trying to say it's free, but anecdotally the "Free + Shipping" seems to work for many artists. It is a strategy used by many independent music marketing companies.

    I think the main reason people started saying the digital nature of CDs was negatively impacting the sound - was the low quality, small, cheap, stereo systems that MOST people played CDs on at home at that time. Not a lot of people experienced CDs on a "true hi-fi" receiver with big speakers - more likely an ultra-cheap boombox with tinny, tiny, speakers. In the late 80s-onward, the best sound system most people had was in their car - so the bar was lowered for what recorded music should sound like. People still had access to big home phono-stereos and turntables...so comparing that audio to car FM radio or a cd on a small boombox, people quickly got the idea that vinyl was the purest and best audio.

      I've got a Sony and JVC CD players from the nineties the internal DAC in the Sony sounds sterile and the internal DAC of the JVC was the best in its time but poor compared to modern DACs. I just bought an $80 DAC with decent reviews. The Sony has an optical output and it sounds fantastic and superior to the internal DAC of the Sony or JVC. Unfortunately the JVC has no digital output. My opinion, frequencies plot vastly different on vinyl or digital. Get a separate equalizer for each format.

    People need to stop with the hate on AI and acting scared. Authentic art and music aren't dying, and AI isn't ruining everyone's lives or careers. Newsflash: AI has been around since the 50s! You're using it right now on your device, computer, phone, TV, and Wi-Fi Basically all electronic devices have artificial intelligence in them to make them actually work That TV show you're watching or that song you're listening to or that letter you're typing in on your keyboard it all is being done by a artificial intelligence When you stroke your keyboard to type in something You're not actually typing it into the computer yourself It's going through a wire through to the computer into its artificial intelligence and it's telling it what to do No different than prompting A AI in the technology out now. The only difference is that the media, government, music industry, and movie industry have been using AI to produce content for decades, and now it's available to the public. And let's be real, concerts are just a gimmick and a scam. You're just watching someone lip sync, and if you're okay with that, then that's on you. AI isn't going to destroy your life or anyone else's. I make my own art and music, and I don't care about AI one bit. It doesn't bother me because I'm not worried about becoming irrelevant. And can we talk about the hypocrisy? Everyone was stoked about Paul McCartney's AI-generated Beatles song, but now you're bashing others for using it? Come on. This technology gives people who can't afford to make music or art the opportunity to do so. It's not taking away from you or anyone else. You can still do your thing your way, and I'll do mine. I use AI for my album art and videos, but I still create my own music. It's not an either-or situation. And let me prove it to you - I've been making music for 25 years, and no one's ever really acknowledged it, even before AI was available to the public. It's not because of AI; it's because people are ignorant and disrespectful. They'll click on a song and exit out without even listening. It's not AI that's the problem; it's people. AI just gives others the opportunity to create that you've had all along because of your resources. Also your claiming this video that AI is going to destroy the careers of beat makers No it's not They literally use artificial intelligent digital sound packs and stuff to make beats There's no difference in between what they're using to make their own music and what people are using to make music with AI or art or any other type of thing with AI and plus most people who make beats don't even sell them to people because people don't buy beets really from people They rather make their own so that theory you just threw out there is nothing more than a conspiracy theory.

    Performing live is NOT free. I appreciate what you're getting at but so many artists are pulling back from live performances because of the cost and time investment. Gas, tolls, flights, rental cars, parking, paying the band, paying the sound guy... it all costs money even if you don't pay yourself. Then there's the time is costs to book, promote, prepare, and get to the gig. Performing live is a full time job that often doesn't allow you to break even. I just wish this industry was more like being a plumber. No plumber does free work "for exposure." OK rant over!! haha, I'm still a full time musician but I don't want any newbies getting misled.

But to be fair to the vinyl format I believe the lower frequency issue on vinyl is in some part meet in the RIAA equalization (that gives us another problem though). And I think the CD distortion in treble with brick wall filters could give the vinyl format an upperhand in this area. Otherwise agree I agree with you :-)
