  • ⭐ How I Improved My Typing Speed From 40 WPM to 100+ WPM! ⭐
    Hello! This has got to be the video I have been most looking forward to posting in the last year! Mainly because it's something that I've been working on and I really wanted to share exactly what I've done to improve my typing speed.
    In this video, I go through literally everything you need to know for increasing your typing speed. Typing speed is honestly so important as you can type essays, notes, and work faster. Also, I notice that when typing, my brain often works faster than my typing speed, so I've been practicing to be more "productive" in terms of thinking.
    Anyways, I really hope you enjoy this video! It's the first of 2022!

    The number pad is soo true. I never knew there was a stigma of numpads being for accountants or business people, but it's soo much faster to type numbers on there. I just build my first custom keyboard which is a TKless, and while I love how it looks and feels, not having a numpad kind of hurts 😅

    • @lorensims4846
      @lorensims4846 Před 7 měsíci +1

      I typically use the number keys across the top of the keyboard only for the special characters.
      It was surprisingly easy for me to learn to "touch type" a numeric keypad when I had a temp job with the U.S. Census. Now I ALWAYS prefer a numeric keypad and carry around an external one for my laptop.

    • @ciberkid22
      @ciberkid22 Před 7 měsíci +1

      @lorensims4846 i ended up getting an external one too because a numpad is too good for me to pass up. Only thing now is learning to be as efficient on my left hand lol

    Great video Emily. I learnt to type on a manual. Another tip they taught me was to centre your body over the J (UK/US key layout) to help prevent RSI along with you other posture tips. I find the biggest limitation to my speed is my ability to spell. Copy typing I’m fairly efficient touch typer but typing my own words it slows as I have to think about spelling. I remember to this day spending all day typing a, s, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, ; (ping, return) with paper over your hands to stop you looking at the keys. I never use my left thumb.

    I understand your keyboard preference. I learned to type as part of our education requirement on the typewriter. I prefer keyboards that produce sound. It helps my brain connect finger movement with proper key press. I also like keyboards where all the keys are in the "correct" places haha. I know there are many types of keyboard layouts but we practiced on QWERTY so my mind thinks of that as the correct layout. Thanks for your tips. Lovely keyboards you have.

    I've just had a quick play on monkeytype. It lets you type quotes instead of random words, which is great because they include punctuation. I could also change it to British English. One fun thing which I wasn't expecting was the ability to playback my typing - enabled me to hear and see my speed and note words I make in which I make errors.
    You can also set Monkeytype to make sounds when you type. Mine is set to Typewriter, but there are various mechanical switch sounds for those who use quiet keyboards.
    My favourite type is a scissor switch: Cherry Stream TKL, but I wish they made a 75% version.

    Trim your fingernails. Great tip!
    I always kept my fingernails rather long and I found that I tore up the keycaps on the backlit keyboard on my MacBook after a couple of years.
    When the pandemic struck, I started cutting my fingernails very close to make deeply washing my hands much easier. I'm finding that I like having my fingernails clipped close.
    I now have a new MacBook and I'm happy that I won't be endangering the look of its keyboard.

    Instead of getting a keyboard with a dedicated number pad, you can just aget a fully programmable keyboard with support for firmwares like qmk, zmk etc. Then you simply put a numpad on a layer on you regular hand position and you won't have to move your hand to type numbers anymore. Quite the speed and comfort improvement for me. Also a symbol layes can be quite helpful to not have to go through that painful movements that is alt + number for certain sympols.

    How is typing on red switches going? I have heard they are harder to type text due to lack of feedback. I think you have at least one keyboard with red switches and the sound is amazing! ;) I totally agree with the need for having a good mechanical keyboard and this is how I got into typing. I got first mechanical keyboard with brown switches, which are tactile. I think I will get the same keyboard again, because it is great, except with the set of red switches, because of your video ;)

    • @lucaspagote3042
      @lucaspagote3042 Před rokem

      Red switches are linear switches, they are also good for typing, you only need feedback if you don't press the key all the way down when you type, if you do bottom out when you type feedback is not very useful anyways. I had brown switches and I didn't like them, I'm using a linear switch right now, and I love them. If you want to go down the rabbit hole, there are many switches, with different materials, different sound a d feel, so I would highly recommend getting a keyboard with hot swappable sockets, so you can change your switches easily, there are way more than reds and browns.

    • @pavel9652
      @pavel9652 Před rokem

      @@lucaspagote3042 Thanks Lucas for the reply! ;) In the meantime, I got a very similar RGB TKL keyboard with red switches. The keyboard was locally available in the country. It is great! I think red switches are better than brown ones. The experience is smooth and I agree with you that feedback is not very useful. I bottom out the keystrokes, anyway. It is my new favorite keyboard. I don't have access to the other keyboard right now but will compare both when I am back home. The new one isn't hot-swappable, but the older one is, so I might swap the brown switches with red ones. I have been using the mechanical keyboard for three years ;)

    I think I'm faster with the numrow since I touch type it. I find the numpad a bit awkward and slow since I often have to use the same finger on different keys multiple times consecutively. Not to mention I have to bring my hand half a flippin mile over to the numpad anyway.

    1) 07:05 - I think you are typing numbers on the left-hand video wrong; numpad is faster, but you are supposed to use more fingers on the numbers row; true that typing just number this way seems to be inefficient and you can use only one hand on numpad
    2) 07:46 - "I got cyst (...), I don't know if it is correlated, doctor says it isn't, but I think it is (...), once I got wrist rest, things got better, but I still have cyst" - haha, doctors said it is not correlated! ;) ergonomics are important, though! see carpal tunnel syndrome for instance
    3) 09:10 - 80% efficiency is horrible! in my experience everything below 92% feels bad and slows a lot; 98% is pretty good!

    These are good tips but I disagree for the num pad part. Your comparison is unfair because you only use one hand on the number row. By sticking to the base position on the home row using your two hands, you don't have to move your right hand far from the base position to reposition it later. It is way faster in my opinion.

    Some great tips. You can practice with CTRL+F (s____h in the browser or in the favourite text editor). Go to Wikipedia on an article you are learning about, press CTRL+F to start s_______g for text and start typing a paragraph. You will get nice highlighting showing mistakes! My advice is to type the text you like or want/have to learn, so you will learn two things at a time ;) I have used some of the platforms mentioned in the video, also typing club, which I can recommend! I also practice by responding to comments on topics I am interested in. (AI filter gets deleting this comment!)
