I just finished reading Crazy Rich Asians, and I do agree he focuses on some details a little too much, what got me was the focus on all these irrelevant rich people I don't care about. There is so much spent away from the "main characters" on random cousins and aunts doing random things to show the disfunction in their lives and I'm like 'wow I hate these people' great, so what. The movie did a great thing by cutting off a lot of the fat and just focusing on Rachel and Nick's story with just a little bit of Astrid's story mixed in there.

I agree that the book is a little too long, but I don't think the movie is an improvement so much as a different genre. Since CRA the book is a satire, it makes sense that it's showing more breadth. The movie is a romcom so it's focused on the couple.
